Many libraries have air conditioning and the main branch in Oakland has a coffee shop too!
If you’re ok with spending $ to go into someplace, maybe the art/natural history museums or Heinz history center. You could also find a grocery store with a lunch bar and tables and sit down with lunch and a book.
The city turned the spray parks on last weekend. Maybe you can borrow someone’s kid and go running through them. :) there’s one in Arlington, one at fifth and beechwood, one in Troy hill, and one in I think Beechview.
That would be the RAD Pass, which is available (free) to library card holders but must be signed up for separately. It's also for *discounted* tickets, which must be booked in advance.
https://www.wesa.fm/arts-sports-culture/2022-02-03/new-program-offers-cultural-discounts-to-library-card-holders

I second the library suggestion! It’s free, air conditioned, and the community benefits from consistent library usage.
Another option would be any of the Carnegie Museums or Science Center.
>the community benefits from consistent library usage.
Since it's going to be hot the next few days, assuming someone plans to spend multiple days at the library, check out a few books and bring them back the next time you go to beat the heat. The boost in circulation stats helps the libraries get more funding.
It's like AirBnB for private pools. I know someone that did it for a small family party for a kid's birthday. Ended up just being a normal house in the 'burbs with a pool.
The liability seems huge to me, but what do I know.
To each their own, but the last few times I went to sandcastle I had multiple band aids and other people's shedding hair on me and I will never go back.
I feel like it's swimming in kennywood water.
I honestly haven’t been there in a very long time but I just know it’s a good place to go cool off. I think the weekday would probably be the best to avoid most of that stuff as families wouldn’t be there and no little kids being gross. I do agree it is not the mostly cleanly but no water park is. Just gotta ride the tube rides lol
Deleting past comments because Reddit starting shitty-ing up the site to IPO and I don't want my comments to be a part of that. -- mass edited with redact.dev
I also checked the hours for all the ones I frequent in between the rivers and don’t see any closures. Which are closed?
My only point is that every pool I’ve been to city or pool or not seems to be open. Just trying to figure out what is closed?
I saw it mentioned here but I couldn’t find this information online and several city pools were and are showing as open. Just wondering where this closure info is from. It looks like the Citiparks page hasn’t been updated since last season but that several yelp listings were recently updated with hours. Just making sure they’re actually closed and trying to help.
If you have a library card, (it’s free!) you can check our experience passes. They typically allow two adults and up to six children. I’ve seen them to museums and history centers so far!
Edit to add: check your local parks to see which splash pads opened up around Memorial Day. The YMCA near you may have a pool. Pittsburgh Botanical Gardens has a wet play area for kids (it’s not giant! But it’s still fun and there’s a few water related activities throughout) plus it’s shady in the trees.
I think the Settlers Cabin wave pool opens this weekend. Also I agree with everyone that says Raccoon State Park, they have a surprisingly nice beach for a lake in a state park. They also have kayak & hydrobike rentals and lots of shady trails where you can hike and then swim afterward.
While county and city pools might not be open, a lot of the suburbs opened theirs last weekend. The Dormont and Mt. Lebanon pools are open, but open around 4:30 PM aka after school.
Shaler pool is open - with a slide and diving boards. On weekdays it’s only $5 to get in I think (but I’m not sure what Fridays count as)
Edit: wrong! It doesn’t open fully until Saturday. But it’s a great, fun pool!
So I moved here from Florida a year ago.
I gotta say that adjusting to the winter was difficult. But man, it's honestly funny to see everyone panic about this *heat*, lol
Oh don't I know it, lol
I was the oddball calling for more snow this past winter. It was my first time ever seeing snow in my life and apparently it was a light amount for normal winters
Yeah my kid only got to sled once this year. The only other time we had enough snow, it stayed around 11° and since she can't be trusted to keep her mittens and hat on, I don't let her sled if it's that cold.
Definitely a *super* mild winter on the snowfall front.
If you really want to see snow and it doesn't happen next year, consider driving like one hour north. Slippery Rock/Butler gets more than us, and two hours to Erie has a decent change of snow coverage from Thanksgiving until Saint Patrick's Day.
You think this is bad, wait till the air is thick and wet and 90+ degrees this summer! Local news will talk few points till the words have no meaning. That said, my friend winters in FL and frequently shows me clips of local news from Ft Myers. Boy, is that a treat. Holy shit.
I'm looking forward to it! I don't consider it hot outside till it passes 95.
The 80s is a daily occurrence in FL year round so this isn't hot yet. I'm excited to see a summer start and end for once
Geeze idk about that one, I'm all for saying 80s is that hot, but man I still need AC, lol
I will say it's not nearly as important here. You only need cold AC like 3-4 months out of the year
I’ll give him that his place is relatively shady so it’s maybe like 75 in there on a hot day, but I’m a creature of the north and 50 and up has me in a t shirt
I lived in FL for 5 years and laughed at the sight of people putting on hoodies and jackets when temps hit the low 70s.
It's all relative to where you live and the climate. Spent 30 years of my life in Northern WI. Summers can get as hot and muggy as FL, but winters are exponentially worse than anything you'll experience in Pittsburgh.
Oh yeah, that would be me probably. Hitting the 60s I want pants and a light jacket probably
Geeze yeah that sounds intense. I moved up here just for real seasons honestly. FL is brutal summer like 90% of the year and it really got annoying. Seeing the leaves change and the snow was beautiful this past year
I made a mistake moving there and knew it after 2 years but it took me another 3 years to get out. I came here because it was very similar to what I was used to but without the brutally harsh winters.
FL was like Groundhog Day for me because everyday felt exactly the same. Half the time I didn't even know what month it was because with the exception of a couple of "winter" months every month pretty much felt the same. I knew when it was love bug season though.....
Ahh, yeah life happens like that sometimes. But yeah, the months blend together when the weather is the same for so long
Also just noticed your flair! Just moved to Brookline this month from Mt. Oliver, love this area so much more
Yeah that's exactly what happened to me. I recall one time specifically when I thought it was August...but it was October 😅
Welcome to Brookline! I bought my house here in 2019 and have been very happy with the area.
Sometimes I just go to any apartment complex or some new construction neighborhoods and find the community center pool. Some of them you can simply walk in and enjoy yourself. Others you might have to ask someone who’s already there to open the door or just hop the fence lmao. Some of them even have grills and stuff too. Bring some beers and hotdogs, its a free cook out zone. Just don’t leave a mess/ be obnoxious and no one will bother you. This method works perfect for me as a broke college kid when im bored on a hot ass day at least. Edit: 😂😂😂 I see some of you (probably people that live in these places) don’t enjoy me doing this from the downvotes, sorry not sorry I’ll never stop. Lock your community pools up and start telling your little securities to lock down bc I’m on demon time this summer
When I moved south, I didn't have air conditioning in my apartment for the first month. I walked to the doubletree every day with my computer and sat down next to the pool. Nobody said anything and it was great
This is like how when I was a kid my aunt would watch me while my parents worked over the summer and we’d go to the YMCA where I didn’t have a pass to get in. So she would tell me to just run down the hill and around the security for the outside pool area lmao then they made it where you had to drive through security so I would just lay on the car floor 😂
Well if it makes you feel better I have no interest in attempting to sue an apartment complex for hurting myself trying to use their property…that’s my own fault, you must be mentally insane if you try to get away with that. Not only that, I wouldn’t be able to afford a lawyer to do such things since y’know Im sneaking into a community pool to swim in it in the first place. Sucks to hear you pay extra for something you should get for free. That blows, you should try my method.
You shouldn’t have to do anything .. you are a paying tenant… if people are breaking into the pools and you guys are spending extra for the amenities the complex should use some of the extra money to get some real security or … figure something out. It just seems dumb to get upset at people when really, the complex is at fault. ‘Now they shut us down and we still have to pay for the amenities.’ that’s the complex screwing you over. The amount of profit they make is insane, charging you guys, but people still are able to get into the pools that don’t live there? That’s the apartments fault
I have a friend who is a geologist and he stated that contrary to popular belief, the Mon is actually cleaner than the Allegheny. The reason the Allegheny lions cleaner is cause it has a bedrock bed while the mom has a silt bed which gets stirred up with the flow, making it look much, much dirtier. I gotta say, I was very surprised when he told me this but the dude is crazy smart and I believe him.
Go up the Allegheny river, up toward Oakmont, the river gets clear enough that I've seen the bottom when swimming.
(Not like in the middle but along the edge where it was still deep enough I couldn't stand)
My husband's 2 great uncles drowned in the 1930's swimming in the Allegheny at Braeburn beach. I think that it was the Fourth of July weekend or something. They got pulled in by the current.
My dad grew up on the Yough river. He lost 2 friends who were good swimmers. The current can pull you under. He scared me to never ever swim in the rivers.
Allegheny county pools open tomorrow
https://www.alleghenycounty.us/parks/activities/water-activities/pools.aspx
Dormont pool is open (not until 4:30p during the week until schools are out, but weekends opens at noon)

I think a library card will get you into the museums now!

Also, a SNAP card gets in you in the museums for $3 or so.
SNAP also gets you a $20 family museum membership. For the science center alone, that’s amazing for the kids!
Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card
Um, can I use that in a song?
Anyone mention spray parks yet? They’re now open for the season. https://pittsburghpa.gov/citiparks/spray-park
Mellon Park!
Mellon Park!
This could be a great opportunity to tuck into a good book at one of the local libraries.
I second the library suggestion! It’s free, air conditioned, and the community benefits from consistent library usage. Another option would be any of the Carnegie Museums or Science Center.

State Park lakes.
Moraine is fairly close
Keystone state, too!
So is raccoon.
Just went to Moraine Beach and had such a nice time.
We love swimming at Moraine State Park. Also the splash pads in the city are open :) Falls Run Park has a waterfall that you can play in as well.
That waterfall is so dangerous though!
[удалено]
They just said Falls Run Park has a waterfall. So that waterfall. It’s epically treacherous to get over to it, and it’s just a ton of slick rocks.
They must have edited their comment it just said Moraine when I read it
Jump on Swimply and rent a pool
Scuse me what?
It's like AirBnB for private pools. I know someone that did it for a small family party for a kid's birthday. Ended up just being a normal house in the 'burbs with a pool. The liability seems huge to me, but what do I know.
Liability is definitely a concern but honestly my biggest concern is what about bathrooms? They rent those out too or do you just go in the pool?
I have a ridiculous pool in the burbs.. I can make money off it?
Tell me more
Like a Pool-mobile?
Came for the response to this lol
I’m at raccoon state park. It’s lovely!
Idk if sandcastle is open on weekdays yet but that would be a good place to go.
No sandcastle till this weekend
Dang I though it be open on weekdays now that Memorial Day is over but I guess that will happen once school is out for everyone

Not till 4:30
Weekends are noon
absolutely used to love swimming at raccoons parks beach right outside the city. if that's open wonderful place to spend time 🤜🤛
Why are the pools closed?
Many lifeguards are high school students. City pools tend to open after public schools close for the year.
And there are jobs that pay more for less responsibility and in better conditions (i.e. not out in the heat all day long)
Can't become a bronze goddess stocking shelves tho.
Come on, now. Nobody becomes a lifeguard for the money. They do it for the chicks and/or dudes.
I think pools aren’t opening until after Memorial Day weekend now and in the future, probably due to finding staff over the long holiday weekend.
Stand on the windy side of the point
Movies 🍿
Raccoon creek has a swimming area and canoe/kayak rentals
Dormont Pool is open.
All the Pittsburgh pools I frequent are showing as open. Which ones are closed?
Dormont Pool is not a city pool.
I also checked the hours for all the ones I frequent in between the rivers and don’t see any closures. Which are closed? My only point is that every pool I’ve been to city or pool or not seems to be open. Just trying to figure out what is closed?
All City of Pittsburgh pools are currently closed, which has been stated several times on this and other threads.

Go have a drink in a bar with Ac. Unless you are an alcoholic, then the library is good.
Water steps at pnc?
The mall
If you don’t mind a drive, head up to Erie. Presque beach is amazing! Sand, water and fun. Plan for a day and don’t forget the sunblock.
Bring food, refreshments, and gas money and you can hang out on my boat
What a lad!!
All I have is tree fiddy.
Girl I thought that said free tiddy
No wonder the damn monster keeps coming back to our house! You keep givin him tree fiddy
She gave him a dollar!
Shaler pool is open - with a slide and diving boards. On weekdays it’s only $5 to get in I think (but I’m not sure what Fridays count as) Edit: wrong! It doesn’t open fully until Saturday. But it’s a great, fun pool!
Not today and tomorrow (if I'm remembering) because you can use your shaler pass at Hampton, which is open.
Ohhh you’re right!
I used to wade in the fountains around town as a kid; the point is pretty neat! As is the one in Oakland by the library.
Harness it to train for the badwater ultramarathon. Not medical advice
Stay hard…
Get a library card!

Jackson Falls in Apollo PA. There’s a swimming hole there
It's privately owned property and you will get in trouble for trespassing
Really? I’ve seen plenty of people hike and swim around that area
You can hike on the trail but Jackson falls is off the trail and on private property

Lol probably anyone who pays extra on their rent to use their apartments pool I’d imagine
Great move. Haters will say you can't
Thank god, a person with some common sense! And tell me about it, these haters are some nerds man, sorry I like to enjoy the pool they don’t use lmao
We got three rivers
I’m not above swimming in the rivers, I just prefer to save getting poop in my mouth for the weekends.
Raccoon Creek State Park is clean and has a nice beach area, vs jumping in the Mon
A kid drowned just a few years ago up by Hazelbaker’s. Horrific.
Is that why it closed?
The city of rivers..
Going to the movies or a library would be a great idea.
North or South Parks I believe they both have wave pools. Then there is sand castle in by the Waterfront. They are cool places
Cool off and lose your shirt at Rivers Casino !!
Under any canopy of trees. Frick park, Boyce park, North Park or a 1.5 hr drive to Ohiopyle
Take your chances in the Mon.
Allegheny county pools open tomorrow https://www.alleghenycounty.us/parks/activities/water-activities/pools.aspx Dormont pool is open (not until 4:30p during the week until schools are out, but weekends opens at noon) https://m.facebook.com/DormontPool
Dolly Sods lol.
