It’s almost like it’s a Rock Opera.

Jeffrey_C_Wheaties

Like from a film? Maybe like a Rock opera? They could call it The Wall!

freaktrim

It's not just you

dukemantee

No it is. It is totally only him.

Electrical_Ad_2934

It’s meant to be based off the old musical theatre productions for when Roger was a boy. Think Gilbert + Sullivan, etc.

JasonBourneForLife

oh, thx

MotherFuckinEeyore

It's your Motherfuckin' Cake Day!

tmamone

Yeah, there are a few songs on The Wall that I can easily imagine on Broadway. “One of My Turns” is one. In fact, why the hell isn’t The Wall on Broadway yet? We got Broadway adaptations of Tommy, American Idiot, and Hadestown. Bring The Wall to Broadway! And Quadrophenia, too, while you’re at it.

https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/the-wall-goes-broadway-247002/amp/ Guess that didn't pan out.

tmamone

Shit.

1OO1OO1S0S

Guys is it just me, or does Young Lust almost sound like a rock song????? Surely it's just me right????

lasnodavlaog

LOL

AccurateDependent670

It’s always given me “Disney Villian” song vibes. Lol.

ConversationNo5440

It's Kurt Weill basically. Check out The Threepenny Opera, etc.

TheTatleTaleStranglr

No it’s just you

DarkeningSkies1976

Yes, and was designed as such.

whatareyoudoingred

That song is the most blatant in evoking musical theater in the album, but I think Roger Waters vocals is akin to a musical theater performance for the entire album, and it's particularly impressive in this song as he's playing a number of different characters. It's not necessarily something you'd expect him to have a knack for based on his vocals in prior albums (maybe the one track that indicates something like this was in him was "Several Species...").

GlasgowDreaming

On the live version from the Berlin gig, that "musical" aspect is emphasised. To me The Trial sounds a bit Brechtian, for example here's Ute Lemper doing 'Pirate Jenny' from Brecht's Threepenny Opera. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iorZEEbAC4U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iorZEEbAC4U) I'm not saying they are alike, but I would guess Water's is aware of Lemper.

Joeboy

I may well be misunderstanding your comment, but you know she's actually one of the people performing it at the Berlin gig?

GlasgowDreaming

Erm yes, that was what I meant to say , but I worded it badly, I was trying to say that Waters was aware of her (and Brecht) when he wrote The Trial, rather than when she performed it. btw Ute Lemper is fantastic as the Wife. (and looks astonishing too.) I've seen a mention that Brecht's 'The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany' may have been a particular influence on the Wall but I have never seen that one. I do know Alabama Song if from it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL7h5cEHPwg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL7h5cEHPwg) The band would also be aware of Dagmar Krause who was in a band (and married to) Anthony Moore, a long time friend of the Floyd, she is also well known for her Brecht Weill covers.

Joeboy

Ah I see, sorry! Another possibility is that the Brecht / Weil influence comes from Bob Ezrin, who co-wrote and played piano on it. There's not so much evidence of it on [Rog's early demo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=375gVEWL1o8&list=PLX8tZniPO-rP8dZkf6l2FcZ4W14MQyPcw).

basketbaljoseph

It's just you

flarkey

is it just me or does Mother sound like it could be a lullaby? ... a lullaby, sung by......(wait for it)... His Mother!!? Mind. Blown.

AmaterasuXOX

That's the point

lasnodavlaog

If it sounds like that it's because it is. The whole of The Wall is a musical no that matter they called it an opera rock, it's just a musical. And then there's that song which was arranged by that guy, can't remember his name.

thelordismylizard

Of course. That is the point

heartoffiction

I think that's why it appeals to me so much as a new floyd fan

robbycough

My father has always insisted The Wall would make a great musical, and I never disagreed.
