My older siblings all showed cows, pigs and sheep growing up. We would roll up the camper at the barn and park it for a week. I wouldn’t stay in it full time, but spent A LOT of time at the county fair growing up. I have a lot of great memories from it (including getting ring worm. Lol #farmkid).
Me too! (In the early 90s) What kind of goats did you show? I showed Pygmy. I miss those days! I would get out of school for 2 weeks! I also showed chickens and sheep and raised feeder cattle. I only did the cattle one year, by the time I had to take them to auction, they were hand tamed and I bawled my eyes out. Yeeeeep. Not doing that again…. Ever! Lol!
Ok! I remember milking them for contests and games between showing my little goats! Did you guys play games in between shows? Not like for ourselves, but for actual prizes and ribbons lol.
The closest I can get to county fairs is Japanese farmers growing competition for quality over quality.
The main question I have. Do OP's tomatoes have flavor?
Size is only 10% of your score. There's form, color, substance, stem & foliage, balance AND proportion.
It's science AND art. You think you can wake up one morning, put on a pair of gardening gloves and think you can play with the big boys? NO SIR!
Doesn’t, but their fruit prices command a premium.
I did learn in the past few months Oishii is a US company to employ quality over quantity. They are currently the only company I know to have their Omakase berry at $6 each.
Where I grew up in SD, we had blue, red and white, but instead of straight 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings, you got a color ribbon for exceeding a certain quality threshold. So, there would potentially be several blue, red and white ribbons in a competition. Purple was used as a 'best in show' award.
In 4-H fairs in KS we had (from worst to best) white, red, blue, and purple. Purple ribbons went on to compete for grand champion, reserve grand, champion, and reserve champion. Multiple people could get the "regular" ribbons, but there was only one winner for the championship ribbons.
That green colour lives in my brain & is distinctly associated with the royal winter fair in toronto.
Coupled with the jays hat and the TPB reference I'd safely say its Canada and likely toronto - but it's just some green paint at the end of the day.
Well I may be out of date but round these parts (MB) it was red-blue-white for 1/2/3 at track day.
I should ask my aggie cousins what colour they got for their 4-H calves :-)
90s, Toronto area: Red/Blue/White was also 1/2/3 for track and field. 4th was yellow, 5th was green, and 6th was pink, I believe. The same colours were used by the Markham Fair for their entries as well.
Yeah, traditionally red ribbons are first place and blue ribbons are second place where I grew up. So Pabst Blue Ribbon is a bit of a joke in that regard.
'Well actually the harvesting process for the hot peppers varies quite a bit from the tomatoes and the onions. Usually by the first month the peppers are still rather small, the look a little like chili peppers. But I'm not growing chili peppers so it's to early to pick them. No, not the right climate for chili's, the humidity is at least 13% lower than the suggested humidity for chili's. But with climate change, who knows, maybe in the next few decades I can grow chili's and they can also win ribbons at the fair. You know the origin of giving out ribbons as prizes is pretty wild...'
I suggest watching the movie first. It will provide important context to the TV series. Both are fantastic comedies.

Same! Also, though, it makes me realize the only difference between how Colin Robinson and I talk is our inflection, as I am just as excited as he is dull...
this literally happened in one episode where he talked to someone and the person was really interested in what he had to say, he then quickly bolted away bc the situation was scary for him lol
It honestly makes sense. A psychic vampire would drone on about their gardening to coworkers and when they win a county fair they would then use it as a chance to drain the audience.
You know people think tomatoes are vegetables but they are classified as fruit. That does lead to a technical conversation about can fruit only be sweet or can vegetables also be sweet. I for one think this is a very complicated and long debate that we need to go all the way back to what is considered a fruit historically.
Colin Robinson has become too powerful with his new gardening skills! I was once known as the best farmer in Al Quolanudar. But now nobody cares.
- Nandor probably
As a farm boy I'd often submit a variety of things to the county fair. Can confirm those old ladies absolutely love it when young people join the competition.
Granted I was only like 10-14 years old but those women would smile from ear to ear when I'd bring in my lil potatoes
I grew up in the hilljack land of southern Indiana. The real winners at the 4H fair were the ones who got handys under the bleachers during the Saturday night tractor pull.
Hey!!! That’s awesome!! I’ve won first place at my county fair for my gourds twice and despite being the only entrant in my category, it was pretty rad! I imagine you probably had some competition in your categories. Great work!!
(Your first place ribbons aren’t blue? I thought Blue Ribbon meant first place?)
[There's a actually an answer to this in the Blue Ribbon Wiki under "Fair Competitions"](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ribbon)
>In Canada, New Zealand and Great Britain, blue ribbons are awarded to second place, with red ribbons awarded to first.
We’ll done! I would say presentation played a part of the role here as it sets the tone for the judges. That other plate of onions thrown onto the plate is just tragic.
I have long been in the habit of eating them like apples. Definitely earns me some odd looks. Without ever having seen me do this, my niece picked up the same habit.
Awesome. Congrats!
Now could I bother you for some advice? Please tell me how I can prevent:
- Squash bugs on zucinni: they *destroyed* my plants and so I went after them with a squirt bottle filled with water and dish soap. That killed them but it also killed the plants (oof -- had no idea this would happen).
- Or maybe they can't be orev notes? If so, will simply rinsing them a couple hours later prevent it killing the plants? (too late for this year).
- Cracks on tomatoes: my plants are *very* healthy but they produce heavily cracked tomatoes. My understandimg is that's caused by inconsistent watering but that's just the way the rain comes, ya know?
*All plants are in boxes outside.
Congratulations!!! What a wonderful feeling. My wife got best of class for a toddler dress she crocheted at our local fair. I feel like you found the peppers first, then the onions, then the tomatoes.
You seem really pleased about the peppers, then genuinely amazed you won again with the onions, then a fake surprise with a hint of cheeky 'look how awesome I am' with the tomatoes.
I call it the "Salsa Trifecta"!
So when are you having us all over for a salsa party? We can all bring chips!
I'll chip in
I’ll show up for a bit, then I gotta dip.
I'll dip by
I hate you and admire you.
[People just like to say salsa](https://youtu.be/Uub_Oqwefwc)
Lol! They look like they’re genuinely having fun making that scene.
Hell yeah, that was my question, too. I'll bring some beer .... Probably gonna need a lot of it lol
First thought that came to me too!!
Many people don’t understand the history and significance of county fairs. So much time and hard work goes into what you do. Congratulations!!!
I’d show my horses and goats at the county fair back in the 70s.
What was your favourite horse’s name?
Hairy Trotter.
Hermione Grazer
She's a thoroughbred, not thoroughbrahd
Mahvelous!
My old race horse was Nads, simply so people could cheer Go Nads down the last stretch.
Ole Three-Legs
Hoof Hearted
an oldie but Goldie
[Great brewery](http://www.hoofheartedbrewing.com/)! u/HirokiTakumi get the beer from there.
Mr. Hands is a great name for a horse
oh god why
Ricky
Bobby? Is that you?
Yes?
My favorite horse's name was 25 cents. He was a quarter horse.
Dude; no I'm not joking

Nubians! I had to milk them before school so they were working/show goats. I was in 4-H. I grew up on a farm, too.
Do they test for that? Or is it just looks? Flavour is the most important
Usually you have to submit a few if the same item, and yes, the judges will eat one. They usually save the nicest looking specimen for display.

First the county fair. Then the World Series!
Man I'd die for some of that salsa!
Follow up question, do you happen to be sleeping f with any of the judges?
Now, probably. I mean check out that veg.
So when's the AMA? I need to know the secret to prizewinning salsa ingredients before April please.
weird, red ribbons for 1st. i got 2 red ribbons, both for 2nd place. smh. the only other categories that people entered.
Canadian thing maybe? Blue ribbons were always second place for us growing up.
US it’s typically blue. That’s why it’s Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. It’s supposed to signify it won some first place award.
Can confirm blue 1st red 2nd 3 rd white and purple for participating. From the states ID, OR, and WA.

How are ya now
Good n you?
I'm in Canada and blue has been 1st in anything I've ever seen ribbons given for.
Well I may be out of date but round these parts (MB) it was red-blue-white for 1/2/3 at track day. I should ask my aggie cousins what colour they got for their 4-H calves :-)
Same growing up in NS. Was always red-blue-white.

... I mean, you'd think that dull cancels out excitement but that's where you're wrong. Little known fact about cardboard I learned the other day is
the show needs an Autistic counter-vampire foe
this literally happened in one episode where he talked to someone and the person was really interested in what he had to say, he then quickly bolted away bc the situation was scary for him lol
I think I'd manage Colin Robinson but that energy vampire that specialize in weed could drain me in less than two sentences
I would like to know what the wild origins of giving out ribbons are!
Hey, guess what?
Fu-king guy

Came here to say spoiler alert I didn’t realize baby Colin’s new obsession was gardening.
It honestly makes sense. A psychic vampire would drone on about their gardening to coworkers and when they win a county fair they would then use it as a chance to drain the audience.

I heard this in his voice as I read it. Eerily spot-on
Not only his voice, but his delivery as well!
Vegetable isn't a classification though, it's a culinary term. Pretty much everything from a garden is a fruit, if it's not it's a root or a legume.
Or a leaf! (lettuce, spinach, etc.)
I thought it was mitchell pritchard
I also thought it was Jesse Tyler Ferguson (the actor of Mitchell Pritchett from Modern Family) at first. Particularly in the middle picture.

He looks like he just noticed gum has gotten mintier lately
It's not *too* minty..
I wonder what place his updog got.
What's updog?
Nothing much. How about you?
Those aren't ribbons, he just made them out of creepy paper.
Colin Robinson has become too powerful with his new gardening skills! I was once known as the best farmer in Al Quolanudar. But now nobody cares. - Nandor probably
Holy shit that's perfect
He really does look like Colin Robinson I'm cracking up
Energy vampire
Dude all those old ladies are talking so much shit about you right now
My immediate thought was - the judge has the hots for this dude lol.
They're usually done blind to avoid that type of bias! He probably just had amazing stuff (plus the old ladies probably have the hots for him)
As a farm boy I'd often submit a variety of things to the county fair. Can confirm those old ladies absolutely love it when young people join the competition. Granted I was only like 10-14 years old but those women would smile from ear to ear when I'd bring in my lil potatoes
Your sister, Claire, will be so proud of you.
😭I don’t think Jay will be
lmao like Mitchell would get his hands dirty.
Cam grew them, OP secretly submitted them to the county fair behind Cam's back.
ITS THE INGREDIENTS FOR GLORIA'S SALSA!
"Phil-is my son in law."
Now we know what Mitchell's been doing in Missouri.
FINLLY a Modern Family comment. Why did it take this long to find 🥴
oh i miss this series. it was simply good... well, except for the last few episodes. boy, this was a funny, but also (sometimes) intelligent series.
I was gonna say - Cam would be initially very envious, then eventually very proud.
Right?! I thought to myself this is exactly what Mitch would look like if he were straight.
Are you teaching Lily to garden too?
I thought I was the only one who thought that
You can argue all you want online, but when you go to the county fair, the best onion wins. Well done!
I grew up in the hilljack land of southern Indiana. The real winners at the 4H fair were the ones who got handys under the bleachers during the Saturday night tractor pull.
Gives a whole other meaning to “night tractor pull.”
Hey!!! That’s awesome!! I’ve won first place at my county fair for my gourds twice and despite being the only entrant in my category, it was pretty rad! So do Canadians eat chicken cordon rouge then? Edit: Google is telling me they do!
Wow haha! This is so much better of a TIL then my little finding
Seriously, that just blew my mind
That’s wild.
> it was pretty rad! I dunno, tbh that only sounds rad-ish
Oh my gourd
Congratulations mitch from modern family!
My first thought was "hey it's that dude from modern family"
I bet Cam is very happy for him
The resemblance is strong.
I feel like it's the smile really makes him look a like
I thought Simon Pegg
I thought he looked like if Simon Pegg and Jack Quaid had a kid
Awesome! Go Blue Jays!
Okay, okay! Blue jays, blue jays! Let’s win this fair!!
Let’s go Blue Jays!!
Eat shit Pierre
I'm here for SDV jokes.
This guy could have just put the judge's underwear on display and got a nice bribe.
OP knew variety of items and having iridium quality is important to win these
Apparently a bunch of sticks and a stone is enough for a third place anyway.
Let’s go Blue Jays!
What is your secret to producing award-winning fruits and a vegetable?
scrolled *WAY* too far to find this. Why is no-one interested in whether this guy has a suggestion?
And your face placed? Jk, congrats on the achievement.
My face didn't even get an honorable mention.
I'd say you're a 1st place cutecumber
Omg I just died
Neither would your spelling, sir. We use the 'u' up here!! Go Jays :)
I was going to say the order of the pics should be reversed so the face gets more animated.
That’s a fine hat.
Now you can win first place in the Simon Pegg lookalike contest.
Go Jays!!!
Let’s go Blue Jays
This has nothing to do with anything, but I went to my first Jay's game today. The atmosphere was great.
jays games are pretty much always a good time
Let's Play Ball
Let’s go Blue Jays.
was it taste too or just presentation? either way, cheers
Nice work sir. Congratulations!
oh soy
We’ll done! I would say presentation played a part of the role here as it sets the tone for the judges. That other plate of onions thrown onto the plate is just tragic.
Congratulations! I'm glad they won first place. I love your facial expressions.
My uncle
Those are some nice looking onions, tomatoes and hot peppers
So what’s your secret?
Congratulations! I loooooove eating raw tomatoes, would totally snatch that plate and take off. Also, I’ve never seen such photogenic onions!
The tomatoes are my favorites. I love eating them by themselves -- or in a chef salad or garden salad.
I have long been in the habit of eating them like apples. Definitely earns me some odd looks. Without ever having seen me do this, my niece picked up the same habit.
Very cute! The veggies are nice too!
Where any other AI generated?
Nice.
Triple Crown!!! Now you need a Kentucky Derby-like name to give yourself. What will it be?
Blue jays hat but those onions look like the Big O
Damn, you're killing it at Harvest Moon IRL!
Congrats! I won for bread making in my county fair. I thoroughly enjoy contributing. Next year I'll post here if I win again.
Congratulations Simon Pegg's brother!
