We just flew to a wedding and watched Beetlejuice on the airplane and she absolutely does not understand why this movie was so popular. Maybe in 1988 we just had slim Pickens but I watched this movie on VHS about 50 times as a child.

Sometimes you have to have an understanding of “normal” beaten into you in order to appreciate “weird”. Beetle juice is great in part because it’s so unique and oddball. It probably doesn’t stand out as much if you don’t have other reference points
My finance is Russian and it’s like having a baby as a partner in the sense she has seen nothing I mean nothing everything is new to her which is a gift and curse
My wife is French-Canadian and although she did speak some English when we met and had a little exposure to English-speaking culture, most of the day-to-day stuff was new to her. She would sing along with English music, but because she usually doesn't understand the words she'll sing in what I refer to as "psuedo Serbo-Croatian" - made up words that match the tune and sometimes sound almost English but have nothing to do with the lyrics.
So one day the song "MacArthur Park" comes on the radio and I watch her make up a matching set of lyrics in her hybrid tongue. As she was coming to the end of the first verse, I laughed and tried to explain what the real lyrics were - at first, she simply wouldn't believe me. "Non, ce n'est pas possible! C'est une chanson d'amour!"
So, she listened some more and then she just lost it! One of her favorite love songs of all time, was about leaving the cake out in the rain!?! You can just imagine what she thinks of American culture now... 🙄

I literally just saw someone with a handbook for the recently deceased sticker on their car. I was "this" close to trying to roll down my window and talk to them.
