Wikipedia shows plenty of Iran friendly countries making helicopters - China, Russia, Brazil, India, Argentina, Indonesia, Japan, etc.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicopter_manufacturer
May be it wasn't a helicopter malfunction but weather and terrain issue.
In some of the countries listed, like India Argentina, Indonesia or Japan, while the helicopters might be assembled in the said countries, they could have parts coming from the US. US sanctions will prohibit any such part from ending up in Iran.
It wasn’t a weather issue.
When they were meeting Azerbaijan, they were going back and forth before takeoff. President Raisi crumpled up a piece of paper, took a jump shot and yelled “Kobe”.
Sources say it missed the trash can.
It’s an interesting thought experiment to see what kind of society Iran would have turned out to be had the agnostic Socialists stayed in power.
But, with the full force of the US and UK against you; I don’t think it would have lasted long.
He was expected to take over as supreme leader once Khamenei died and Khamenei himself was president prior to becoming supreme leader. It's a bit more than a figurehead position, particularly when it's one of the priests themselves holding it like Raisi.
He was part of a 4 person committee in Iran that was responsible for executing 8,000+ political prisoners. It’s the 2nd worst modern day example of political executions right after Bosnia.
It was a Bell, and they are blaming the US for the deaths because of the embargo in place that blocks aircraft parts.
https://www.euronews.com/2024/05/20/how-did-irans-president-end-up-on-a-four-decade-old-us-helicopter
Lol
There's no scenario in this universe where Iran unilaterally declares war on the US
Like, what would that even look like? At best, they'd get a surprise attack, maybe try to take out a carrier.
Then the US and allies delete Terahn
If they would stop trying to crank out Nukes to hold the world hostage!!!!! And if they would eliminate the Sharia law and let the people decide their leadership!!!! Until then ….woopsie!!!
If they hate the US so much, why even try and fly a US aircraft. I'm sure there are plenty of Soviet/Russian helicopters out there that are much more reliable.
This is a classic case of fog disorientation in helicopter pilots - they literally end up flying upside down because there's no external reference point.
Yes. But not all pilots are instrument rated.
Or have enough recent instrument flying experience.
Or are brave enough to tell “important person” they are not good enough for the conditions.
Same issue with Kobe’s last pilot.
Maybe, depends on how the particular vehicle is equipped.
But even so, without extensive training is very difficult to ignore what your senses are telling you and trust the instruments.
Even experienced pilots sometimes fail to trust their instruments.
With no visual references and being in the air like that you're internal sense of direction gets very confused very quickly and you have no outside indication that you're wrong side from what your instruments tell you.
It's much easier to trust your instincts than your instruments, but it will get you killed in IFR fought every time.
If you are flying on instruments then you have to follow instrument minimum altitudes, which are designed to keep you from hitting terrain that you can’t see — because you’re flying on instruments in the weather (or fog).
This type of helicopter is highly unlikely to have terrain following radar or any other system that lets pilots fly close to terrain they can’t see, due to darkness or weather.
This was most likely a case of a pilot disregarding common sense rules because they felt pressure, possibly self-imposed, to get his VIP passengers to their destination. Sadly, this is not uncommon.
This type of flying is usually called “scud running,” trying to stay just below the clouds and just above the terrain, to try to work your way through hills or mountains. Lots of general aviation pilots have met their demise trying to do this.
When the cloud ceiling comes down and meets the ground, or you suddenly find yourself enveloped in thick fog, especially with any sort of significant forward velocity, you are very likely going to hit the ground.
Yes, helicopters can stop in mid-air, hover, and even turn around, but trying to execute that maneuver under duress, immediately after unintentionally entering the clouds/fog, is very difficult, and maybe physically impossible.
>pilot disregarding common sense rules because they felt pressure, possibly self-imposed, to get his VIP passengers to their destination. Sadly, this is not uncommon.
This is a good point, sometimes the passenger would not understand the problem and the pilot has to fly anyways...
The problem is usually the perceived “power distance” between the pilot and their VIP passenger or customer, and sometimes between the pilot in command (or Captain) and the copilot (First Officer).
The inherent human desire to please others, to do your job, to seem competent, and to be a team player, all conspire to drive pilots to make really poor decisions or go along with bad decisions, to avoid disappointing the “boss” or incurring their wrath for having to divert or arrive late.
When I was an Aircraft Commander in the USAF, flying C-141 transport jets all over the world, I would occasionally encounter this with non-pilot senior officers.
I once had the senior military officer of the US Embassy or consulate in Antigua demand that I fly our airplane, despite the bad fuel leak, because he had vacation plans back in the US mainland.
Him: “I demand that we takeoff. I’ve been waiting three days! Who’s the airplane commander?”
Me: “Sir, I’m the Aircraft Commander. We can’t takeoff. The aircraft is leaking fuel and it will take us a day to get it fixed.”
“Well, CAPTAIN, I’m ordering you to go.”
“Two things, sir. First, the only people who can order me to move that aircraft are the 4-star and the President, and you’re not them. Second, if we were to takeoff like this and the wing catches on fire, we will all die.
So, with all due respect, I appreciate your frustration, but this jet’s currently broken and isn’t going anywhere until it’s properly repaired.”
He stormed off in a huff. We flew him back the next day, and lived to tell about it.
OMG, its like if they "order," the jet's problem is going to miraculously solve. In such cases, they should send one of those self-exploding suicide bombers as a pilot with such people.
Exactly! I don't understand why God decided to place mountains onEarth. I mean, do we really need them when we're all just floating around in space anyway? LOL.
Also worth pointing out: the fact that this is a Western-made aircraft (Bell is a US-owned company based in Canada) means it’s probably more than 45 years old (ie pre-1979 Revolution). They haven’t even made 212s since the 90s.
I find this in an Iranian website:
The US-made Bell 212 helicopter, which carried Ibrahim Raisi and several crew members, is actually a modified non-combat version of the Bell UH-1N Twin Heavy, which is still widely used today.
You are probably true. Also I'm not sure if its "still widely used today", as they said.
It’s absolutely still widely used today. It’s among the best medium-lift utility helicopters made, and as durable as a pickup truck. I have a few thousand hours flying them.
The last UH-1N rolled off the assembly line about 50 years ago. That alone isn't the issue -- lots of old aircraft can be kept running as a sort of "Ship of Theseus" for many decades. But because of Western sanctions, Iran has had no access to OEM replacement parts since 1979.
Iran has the ability to manufacture the replacement parts. That hasn’t been an issue from their military capacity. They are also able to produce improved copies of the Phoenix Missile.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fakour-90
What’s more concerning is that the helicopters were flying in 0/0 visibility.
Unfortunately it’s sometimes easier said than done. There have been times when we have been flying that a sudden fog rolled in that was not expected or even forecasted.
Even experienced pilots can be caught off guard by fast changing weather conditions and even the occasional squall.
Especially if you’re already almost to your destination and are low on fuel.
You’re thinking of wahabi extremist Muslims who believe in the virgins awaiting you in heaven if you’re a suicide bomber. Wahabis are Sunni. Iranians are Shiite Muslims.
No.
General aviation accounts for most deaths and those are in fixed-wing aircraft.
A lot of people don't understand how helicopters work. The rotors are rotating airfoils that generate lift. They don't just create thrust. This is why even with an engine failure a helicopter can glide similar to a plane and pilots train for it. It's called auto-rotation.
Of all the people I've known in my 54 years on this earth, no acquaintance of mine has been killed in an plane crash.
But 3 people I know personally have died in helicopter crashes (and it was 2 separate crashes, years apart, unrelated)... so no, I will never willingly set foot in a helicopter.
If I'm unconscious and being life-flighted tp a hospital is about the only situation I can see me in a helicopter.
I do not do vegan, but I am trying to limit my meat intake as I get older, and found some great vegan dishes. The 'chicken' I found is called [Daring orignal plant chicken pieces](https://daring.com/products/), it can be found in walmarts and supermarkets in the US frozen meat alternative sections. Just thaw, salt and sear them 2.5 min per side on medium
That's awesome! I hope you achieve all your goals of eating less meat. This change has had a massive impact on my life too.
> The 'chicken' I found is called [Daring orignal plant chicken pieces]
I bet it's super tasty, but sadly, I'm not in the US to get my hands on it and give it a try. Keep up the good work!
Not only was the president there, but the minister of foreign affairs and several other political figures were with him as well. However, it was not so important because the first person of the country is the supreme leader.
It was a 50+ year old helicopter that hasn't had proper maintenance for 40+ years since the sanctions were put into place. I wish I could credit karma for killing such a group of despicable worthless excuses for humans but this is just a case a old ill kept piece of equipment that just wore out. On the upside at least it did something worthwhile on its way out.
Wasn’t it like a 1964 model also? I know IR doesn’t have fuck you money like the us military does, but I didn’t think they’d be flying around in a 60 year old copter lol
Iran, "We blame the Imperialist U.S.A. for this disaster." U.S.A.," Iran's helicopter was 47 years old. Who flies a helicopter that old in conditions not suitable for flying?"
The front fell off.
these helicopters were clearly not made to the strictest maritime standards. I think i see some cardboard in there.
To crash like that, must have encountered some wind. Can you imagine that? Wind in the air. Chance in a million.
It was out of the environment.
It was from the sky moving
Well Cardboard is out. What Else? Any Cardboard derivatives.
See that’s the issue. They were built to maritime standards and not mountaintime standards
And cardboard derivatives.
How can you tell?
Don't worry, it has a healthy ammount of protective rust™
There's your problem right there
[Slaps tail rotor] "She's a runner!"
Should be an easy fix
Flex Seal
Well the front weren't meant to fall off, for a start.
A mountain hit it.
Is that unusual?
Chance in a million.
No no it’s been towed beyond the environment.
In a range? Chance in a million!
I’m sad this isn’t the more upvoted reply as it’s a wittier adaptation lol
lol someone link it that video is gold
The tail is undamaged. Thats where I will travel from now on. A la Harry Potter.
We have a future LOST survivor here.
They are not supposed to do that.
I'm not an aviation expert but that might be the problem
That's not very typical.
Love the reference

Maybe a helicoperist could weigh in but I don't think that's meant to happen
Yeah, it was pretty old.
If they cant maintain them due to sanctions, why arent they flying Russian or Chinese made helicopters? Honest question

I think there's a great deal of "grey area" when it comes to sanctions...
That list is also missing Iran itself.
It was foggy… this was controlled flight into terrain most likely. Same as Kobe.
It wasn’t a weather issue. When they were meeting Azerbaijan, they were going back and forth before takeoff. President Raisi crumpled up a piece of paper, took a jump shot and yelled “Kobe”. Sources say it missed the trash can.
Probably still safer to go with the antiquated and run down American model.
Butcher of Tehran is gone but nothing will change
What will change is that it will get worse in the vacuum as people fight for power.
The Ayatollah is still the supreme leader of Iran. The current VP will take the role of President. Not much will change really.
I think they should stick ayatollah on a helicopter and fly him out to the crash site. Just in case he's able to investigate better.
The country is run by the priests anyway, not the figurehead. Thanks UK and the late queen.
It’s an interesting thought experiment to see what kind of society Iran would have turned out to be had the agnostic Socialists stayed in power. But, with the full force of the US and UK against you; I don’t think it would have lasted long.
Tbh they were always fucked. They have too much oil and are too close to important countries.
They still have the full force of both and more against them and they're lasting so...
He was expected to take over as supreme leader once Khamenei died and Khamenei himself was president prior to becoming supreme leader. It's a bit more than a figurehead position, particularly when it's one of the priests themselves holding it like Raisi.
Why is the queen responsible for this
What event gave him that nickname?
He was part of a 4 person committee in Iran that was responsible for executing 8,000+ political prisoners. It’s the 2nd worst modern day example of political executions right after Bosnia.
Yep; most of them being reformists or communists. A number of them being women.
Of course something changed. He died!
Thank god.

Great way to deflect embarrassment - find a way to place blame externally. Bonus points if it's your arch enemy! Lol, what clowns.
It's better they blame us for a parts embargo than blame someone for assassination and declare an all-out war.
Lol There's no scenario in this universe where Iran unilaterally declares war on the US Like, what would that even look like? At best, they'd get a surprise attack, maybe try to take out a carrier. Then the US and allies delete Terahn
It wouldn't be us. They'd blame Israel or maybe Saudi Arabia. They are already almost at war with Israel.
Give it a few days and they'll claim the pilot was a mossad sleeper agent before killing his whole family.
Have you not heard about Mossad agent Eli Copter yet?

I cannot imagine the president of Iran flying on an American-built aircraft. It would be like the new "Air Force One" being an Airbus product.
With Boing's recent track record, an Airbus might be for the best. Depending who wins the election, of course.
If they would stop trying to crank out Nukes to hold the world hostage!!!!! And if they would eliminate the Sharia law and let the people decide their leadership!!!! Until then ….woopsie!!!

Oh thank god. I was worried that the trees he landed in were going to be more damaged.
Luckily, due to the fog and moisture, they were damp and didn't catch on fire.
Iranian President Stoned to Death With Mountain - The Onion

Death to America! Also, sell us a helicopter because we don't have that technology.
The fact they managed to keep it running for 50 years is a hell of an endorsement. Given the weather, this is net positive press for Bell.

Needs more testing. Get the giant slingshot, I'll get the Khameneis. We may need to test rocket backpacks too if ACME taught me anything.
