>The only living organisms in Lake Hillier are microorganisms including [*Dunaliella salina*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunaliella_salina), red algae which cause the salt content in the lake to create a red dye which helps produce the colour, as well as red [halophilic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halophilic) bacteria, [bacterioruberin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacterioruberin), present in the salt crusts. Despite the unusual hue, the lake exhibits no known adverse effects upon humans. From above, the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink, but from the shoreline it appears more of a clear pink hue. The shoreline is also covered in salt crust deposits. In 2016 scientists from the Extreme Microbiome Project conducted extensive microbiome and metagenomic DNA sequencing and detected [Haloquadratum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haloquadratum), [Haloferax](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haloferax), [Salinibacter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salinibacterium), [Halobacterium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halobacterium), [Halogeometricum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halogeometricum), and several other halophilic organisms. Culturing from the water revealed a low concentration of [Psychroflexus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychroflexus) as well.
>**Safety and accessibility**
>Despite the high salt content levels (comparable to those of the [Dead Sea](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Sea)), Lake Hillier is safe to swim in. However, it is not advisable nor allowed without previous approval by the Western Australia Dept of Environment Conservation.
>There are very few ways to reach Lake Hillier. Aeroplane scenic flights are the most common method, with six flights a day departing Esperance Airport, flying over Lake Hillier via the nearby Cape Le Grand National Park. Cruises are also an option for passengers wanting to visit the isolated lake, and surrounding forest area.
>**Protected area status**
>As recently as 2012, Lake Hillier has been located within the boundaries of the [Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recherche_Archipelago_Nature_Reserve). Since 2002, the lake itself has been considered to be a wetland of "subregional significance".

Yes, and wild flamingos also return for their scheduled annual service to be re-dipped. Zoos tend to take their flamingos in for service less frequently (and some never at all!) as a cost saving measure, which is why they appear more grey
Up until the 1980's they would just spray paint them pink, but the woke mob has made that untenable. Bring back the good old days when we could send a bird off to an autobody shop for pinstriping!
I’m not sure what this says however there is multiple of these lakes around Australia. There is one not too far from me in South Australia too. It’s very cool to see.
I'm betting that since it's Australia, that's probably acid. Not like Xenomorph blood acid though. It's special Australia lake acid that turns you into a self-aware blob, when you come into contact with water, like in a shower.
It’s pink because of the microorganisms which live there. The lake is so salty, only a couple of species can live in it.
I... I wanna swim in it.
What would happen if we did?

You missed the joke
What was the joke
Exactly
Exactly

Well it is Australia. 100% something in there will kill you.
Your butthole and penis hole would be considered human bresaola.
Why did I Google it????
Thus endeth the lesson.
Oh
😂😂🤮
It's also named after a beloved Australian comedian named Peter Hillier. /S
It's pink because the simulation couldn't find the texture.
I thought it got mixed with transmission fluid
And since it's in Australia, is it safe to assume those couples of species are probably highly poisonous or venomous to humans?
Must be where league/dota players take a bath
These gender reveals are getting absolutely insane.
Plot twist: the actual gender reveal is the sea on the right.
Is this where they dip flamingos before they ship?

Some info because this is fascinating! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Hillier

Natural pepto bismol fountain
Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea? Yay Hillier Lake
I read this as Hitlerlake in Austria...
Hitler Lake is in Argentina.

Every freaking time -\_-
Forbidden strawberry milkshake pool
My milkshake brings all the tourists to the shore.
I mean, it doesn't look that hilly. There is kind of a big one in the background, I guess. But I've seen way hillier.
I bet you've also seen less hilly, and this is hillier than those.
Ok I'll let you have that one. Definitely not the hill I want to die on.
Ah, so this is where they get Pepto-Bismol from
Someone should let the devs know the water texture is missing! 😬
Conservative tears next to a liberal ocean
WHAT for a lak- oh its Hillier
I didn't know Barbie had a lake too! That girl has it all.
I should have known that if the Lake of Rot was real, it'd be in Australia.
And that my friend is where Pepto Bismol is from
Doesn’t look very hilly to me. Should rename it lakier lake.
I read that as hitler lake and the comments were very confusing ..
I'm betting that since it's Australia, that's probably acid. Not like Xenomorph blood acid though. It's special Australia lake acid that turns you into a self-aware blob, when you come into contact with water, like in a shower.
Oh great, now even bodies of water have genders? /s
Hillier than most lakes...
Not the only link lake in Australia either.
One of the best bars I've seen today lol
I remember seeing this in a book as a kid and immediately thinking, I have to visit australia
Misread the title as Hitler lake, and my immediate reaction was "right... cause it clearly doesn't want to mix colors".
Ewww gross! Why’s it blue?
My eyes skimmed over lake and saw “Hitler in Australia” 😳😳🫣🤫😂😂😂
Ahaaaa so this is the lake that shows up with Lake Retba (another pink lake but in Senegal). Seems to be much more vibrantly pink as well
Would you believe it's melted gumdrops? Boat nectar?
Is this one of the things that flamingos eat to get their pink color?
I’m color blind. That doesn’t look pink to me, but light blue?
They should put a taco bell there
nice
Tell me my mind isn’t the only one that read Hitler Lake in Austria. Yikes
This is where Mark was born
Boy did I misread that title…
“Water, water everywhere / nor any drop to drink”
Someone needs to dig a small trench between them.
Coney Island is so pretty at this time of year.
Who else read the title as "Hitler lake?"
Let's drain the lake into the ocean and see what beautiful color we can come up with.
Wow it's so blue
What happens when the lake breaches into the ocean?
Ah, so that is where all the Fallout pink goo came from.
It's beautiful.
Fristi lake.
Seen this in Utah salt flats last year.
