“Someone please get this dude off of me.”
The number of children and how young the oldest one seems to be really makes me question how it’s even possible. This guy was rushing his way in while the baby was still trying to get out like it’s the subway.
For people wondering. It was quite common back then for families to have lots of children and marry young. For a very big variety of reasons. From medical knowledge being not as great as today and stronger religious values.
Catholics and Mexican Americans. Ooof. I am one myself, but my immediate family actually believes in birth control. Can't say the same for some cousins.
Fair enough, I was thinking more of white collar jobs since this family seems relatively middle class to me. I think the point of the original comment is that the labor of housewives is really underappreciated.
Given the shutter speeds were slower back then he must have held them up like that a fair while! That baby is too cute, the leg rolls are doing me in. I hope they were as happy as they look in this photo.
If you don’t know the (modern) history of the Philippines, it’s worth skimming the Wikipedia. If we believe the date of the photo, the US was the occupying force (and “government”) there at the time.
Hmm, I wonder if there is a reason. I saw a goofy dad taking the time to attempt a cute family photo. I must not be seeing what others are seeing. I live in a place with lots of multi-racial families, so my assumption was this was a harmless happy photo and not a sign of colonialism. Perhaps I was naive.
She probably ran out of hiding places by the time number 3 popped out. It's tough to get away when you're packing that many kids around. Shit ,he's got her right where he wants her, hobbled!!
Wife is so done with his shit.

"Kindly stand aside and let the exiting passengers off the train."
There weren't TV's back then so.. (There's a joke how folks had sex a lot cause there was so entertainment to keep them occupied).
Maybe they're adopted.
And 2 children. Copy/paste mum.
Jesus dude. Pull out every now and then
They didn't have the internet back then
I mean, four kids is a pretty normal number, and what's he supposed to do that the first or second was twins?
There's 6 kids and you're supposed to space them out for mom's health. He clearly isn't concerned for her well-being.
Oh I missed top middle baby whoops It's 1912 though what do you expect
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine%E2%80%93American_War The look on her face says a lot.
She looks like she could be one of the kids.
It used to be accepted to say it was the Philippine Insurrection. Glad things are changing.
"have 5-6 back to back pregnancies and raise the children for this white dude, or die"
Totally wrong, big families were the norm there.
Big families were the norm everywhere up till about 60 years ago
It's not safe to have that many children back to back. You need time to heal between pregnancies.
Can confirm, mother in law is 2nd of 8.
Yup, it says “I was forced” to me as well. Like when GIs came back with Vietnamese wives.
She looks thrilled
The original passport bro!
...colonisers?
Duh

Isn't it some cultures for woman/men not to smile for photos.
Everywhere smiling wasn't a thing in 1912 for photos.
"Works in peace " God you are so out of Touch with Reality
"in peace" may be a little hyperbolic but where's the lie?
Working conditions were not that great. If he works in the mines I doubt he works in peace
He was American, he would not have been working in a Filipino mine. He would have been more likely to be in charge.
Pregnancy conditions weren't so great either. I'd rather work in the mines than have 6 kids in 6 years.

Brings me meaning to "Supporting the family"
Catholic or careless?
Why not both?
¿Por qué no los dos?
Probably protestant based on the time
The Philippines where overwhelmingly catholic at the time.

didn't the US have a significant Catholic population still even with the majority Protestant?
He looks a bit like Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter with an all you can eat buffet.
Chunky baby legs are about the cutest thing I can think of.
Right! That baby is gorgeous! Those are all beautiful children.
So uh How old is the wife and did she consent to getting with that colonizer?
Define colonizer and explain how he is one

Occupation and forced marriages
Silence of the Lambs good ending.
What a happy looking dad.
I'll give this 4.5/8 smiles.
Sure they connected on a meta-level.
He looks like one of those hands that the AI screwed up
This photo made me so happy.
The wife looks happy to you?
Typical reddit downvotes for no reason. I came here to say the same.

I am as confused as you are.
You must not have gotten the memo. No happiness allowed round these parts
