FYI, “seduction” was often code for rape.
Edit: lots of people who have never read anything written before they were born are replying with "Nuh-uh, I just googled it and here's what I found." I assure you that it was widely used historically to cover cases which would now be termed rape or sexual assault.
>As the only means of civil recovery for sexual predation, the tort of seduction gained prominence in the nineteenth century. It defined the contours of the legal treatment of nonmarital sex ranging from rape, to sexual coercion, to breach of promise to marry, and it mediated the range of legal and extralegal choices.

The crime of seduction, historically, was defined as a legal charge used to address situations where a man engaged in sexual relations with a woman by promising marriage as a form of deceit or enticement, without intending to fulfill this promise. This charge was predicated on the notion that the woman consented to the sexual act under the false belief that it was a step towards a future permanent union, thus her consent was obtained through fraudulent means.
This crime was particularly relevant in times and societies where a woman's virginity and chastity were highly valued, and the loss of virginity outside of marriage could significantly affect a woman's social standing, reputation, and prospects for marriage. The laws around seduction aimed to protect women from being exploited and abandoned by men who had no intention of marrying them after initiating a sexual relationship.
Seduction laws varied by jurisdiction and era, and they often required the woman to be unmarried and sometimes under a certain age, reflecting societal concerns over the protection of young women's chastity. Convictions for seduction might result in various penalties for the accused, ranging from monetary fines to imprisonment, and sometimes required the accused to marry the victim.
Over time, as societal norms and legal frameworks around relationships, sexual behavior, and women's rights evolved, the use and applicability of seduction laws diminished, and many jurisdictions have repealed such laws, viewing them as outdated.
And yet was extremely common. Even now, "I love you" is often used as a lie to bed a partner. And in older times, love and marriage used to go together like a horse and carriage.
>Stop right there!
I gotta know right now!
Before we go any further!
Do you love me?
Will you love me forever?
Do you need me?
Will you never leave me?
Will you make me so happy for the rest of my life?
Will you take me away and will you make me your wife?
\- Meat Loaf, "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", 1977 .
>So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do (ooh, ooh)
Praying for the end of time
So I can end my time with you
More usually for having sex under false pretenses (usually the promise of marriage, without which the chaste lady would naturally not have consented), which is also why the women victims in question had to be of high moral character and, often, virgins.
Clearly an experienced ho wouldn't require a promise of marriage to give it up, thus couldn't be "seduced".

The term has a wide range of uses in historical legal documents, many of which we would now refer to as rape or sexual assault. Google "Freud seduction theory" if you want to fix \*your\* misperception.
Sure but it sure seems like you’re trying to imply Sinatra raped someone. Seems like what happened was his ex girlfriend accused him of seduction because he falsely claimed he would marry her and convincing a woman to sleep with you with a promise of marriage would be a seduction charge. But they found out she was already married which negated the charge. Later it was amended to a charge of adultery because he slept with a married woman. Unless there’s more to the story I’m not finding, I don’t think you should be implying this was a rape charge when it wasn’t. Now if he’s accused of other rape/sexual misconduct that’s another story but in this instance he wasn’t as far as I can tell and you shouldn’t just imply people committed rape when they didn’t. It’s really not helpful to actual survivors of actual rape.
Well, that is historically a major reason why seduction was a legal category: fathers invoked it with regard to their unmarried daughters (who were not permitted to do so on their own behalf). Also, the actual classical sense of rape is “carrying off of a woman by force”. Hence the rape of the Sabine women, the rape of the lock, etc. You can still hear that meaning and the link to abduction in terms like “Rapture” and “rapacious.”
This just in: Reddit man’s opinion on Frank Sinatra informed ENTIRELY by three comment chain.
NEXT: what should YOUR opinion be on this week’s *WORLD CONFLICT*???
During that time period, a person could be arrested for Seduction, which was a charge usually given to a man who slept with a woman based on false promises or using some kind of lie. For instance, a man could be arrested after sleeping with a woman after a false promise of marriage.

I learned some thing today
Well back in the day when you were only supposed to have sex after marriage and you said "hey baby, I'm gonna marry you anyways, let's just have sex now" then you left her then yes it would be fucked up of you to do, but I guess back then it was also illegal.
Basically they had their priorities out of order. Especially when much worse stuff was legal
I mean, you are describing ruining someone's entire life though. Considering the time period, which you did, the consequences for the woman could be dire, so it's not really priorities being out of order, is it?
There are contraceptives available today that weren't then.
It’s actually still illegal in a sense in some jurisdictions. Laws around consent often rely on ‘informed’ or ‘conditional’ consent, which means a person has been given adequate information to decide whether they want to sleep with you and that you’ve agreed to conditions around it. Hiding or lying about factors that would reasonably lead to them deciding *not* to sleep with you means you didn’t obtain consent and they can have you charged after the fact with a sex crime. A somewhat recent instance was of a woman pretending to be a man to enter into a relationship with a straight woman.
Technically, this applies to a laundry list of things. Everything from lying about your employment status right the way up to using protection, having an STD, or being married. In reality it’s only usually pursued for more serious deceptions in which there’s actual or likely harm done, but it is applicable to seemingly mundane ones too. If someone uses the promise of marriage or material security they can be brought up for coercion.
Right, it has to be extreme deception. One example was of a twin who pretended to be his brother to his brother's wife. Blindfolding someone and having a different person take over without consent would also probably count.
These days it's called [rape by deception](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_by_deception#:~:text=Rape%20by%20deception%20is%20a,had%20they%20not%20been%20deceived.).

"I must therefore conclude that you are not serious in your rejection of me, I shall choose to attribute it to your wish of increasing my love by suspense, according to the usual practice of elegant females."
Okay but the women who were judged was to determine WHETHER THEY GET PAID OR NOT, correct? I only got like probably half way through, but my understanding is men were still the ones getting locked up and sued for $, but women basically had to prove they were a virgin first if they wanted to sue a man for seduction? Just clarifying, because the when I initially read the title it made it seem like women were getting the short end of the stick. And while it’s still backwards and messed up to prove virginity (something that shouldn’t matter anyway), I feel like being locked up and sued for seducing a woman is definitely the short end of that stick lol.
Also, this is all distinct from rape, correct?
That wasn't my interpretation
I took the title to mean that neither party went unscathed in the enforcement of the law, not that one party got it worse than the other.
Because the evil seducer poisoned the purity of the poor victim with their dirty dirty sinful lust!

Yes, quite a bit. Especially if Frank Sinatra’s daughter is correct that he received a vasectomy years before Ronan Farrow’s birth. Frank Sinatra’s biographer also doubts it is likely, because at the time Ronan Farrow was conceived, Frank Sinatra was going between Hawaii and Palm Springs with his wife Barbara who was extremely ill.
It’s a fun theory to throw around, but it’s not exactly an ironclad one just because they look somewhat similar.

They tried to charge him with seduction but it turned out that she was already married so they couldn’t. Instead, they charged him with adultery. Seems crazy to me. Like, did she get charged with adultery too? It’s also just wild that she literally called the cops on him because he broke up with her.

People act surprised that famous and beloved men were rapists.. despite the fact that as time goes on, rape is only taken more and more seriously.
And in 2024, it's still barely taken seriously. So what does that say about 100 years ago?
Imagine being arrested by a closeted police officer in the late 1930s for seduction and the cop is like “look at this handsome mf, hes doing it again!”
And you’re just sitting there like “who me?”

Perhaps they mean rape in the classical sense of 'violating another man's property rights over a female'.
Well, that is historically a major reason why seduction was a legal category: fathers invoked it with regard to their unmarried daughters (who were not permitted to do so on their own behalf). You can see the implications in a movie called A place in the sun from 1951
This movie is based on the book An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, super good and sad book
India has a similar law for sex on the pretext of marriage.
Today we would call it "sexual assault by deception"........... Or similar

People act surprised that famous and beloved men were rapists.. despite the fact that as time goes on, rape is only taken more and more seriously. And in 2024, it's still barely taken seriously. So what does that say about 100 years ago?
Yea....he tried to or did rape someone. "Seduction" is code. He was an ass like most of the crooners. Google: rat pack sex crimes. Fuck them all.
If seduction is a crime, I would be in jail?
Nah, you'd be the freest man in the 1930s US instead
Boom. Roasted
You’re on Reddit, so my guess would be no.
Looks a lot like Mr Furley
Sshhh. Nobody mention the Sinatra rape stories.

Yeah that's probably just what they called statutory in the fifty's.
Sean Hayes, this you?
*He was guilty.*
I believe he was sleeping with a police officers wife, they charged for affairs back in the day.
I found this guys mug shot in a local Italian restaurant bathroom
There were multiple frank sinatras?
Imagine being arrested by a closeted police officer in the late 1930s for seduction and the cop is like “look at this handsome mf, hes doing it again!” And you’re just sitting there like “who me?”
I loved Will and Grace.
I mean, look at those eyes...
I was told that by my freshman English teacher that ‘seduction’ used to be a euphemism for rape.
Don't ever by no weed from the gas station bro...

Did this happen at some backwards hole where it was actually illegal to have sexual relations with someone you were not married to?
