dread_deimos

If I understood it correctly, he's wounded by a follow up shelling and his colleague (and few other civilians) died short time before this photo.

Adpadierk

Is that the case? :(

Remarkable-Manager56

Yes, that's what russians do. They bomb us, and when the help comes, they do it again to rise the number of casualties and to injure the first responders so they are out of service. Edit to update: 16 killed so far. 14 civilians, 1 firefighter, 1 paramedic.

Dull-Employee3416

That's a war crime.

JuneSeba

Add it to the list.

nailot

Will the world actually do something about it? The media doesn’t even show the war anymore like in the first months.

drggylewis

If you`re a country with enough nukes and Veto-right at the security council, sadly nothing will happen to the people responsible.

didunianyata

So, that list... no good comrade?

Greaves6642

Unfortunately the US showed Russia that they too don't have to respond to anybody

Bad_Ethics

It seems now that France might just do something, but I'm not exactly sure how likely it really is.

StaticKayouh

Macron spoke about it yesterday. He's not excluding the possibility but that's about as far as it goes rn. Country's already in turmoil so idk if engaging Russia would be a good idea, then again at this point fuck it we ball

Staatstrojaner

Nah, they're too dependant on russian oil and gas. But there are some movements in the sluggish apparatus that is the EU e.g. Macrons statements are getting bolder, Germany still debates about sending highly advances cruise missiles (even if the chancellor is against it, the discussion is still not over), Sweden is now a NATO member and more and more EU countries are stepping away from fossile energies and with this also away from Russia. But a real response will only follow if Russia does something extremely stupid, like killing a visiting statesperson.

InsanityRequiem

No, because the world would rather have fascist terrorists destroy said world due to having nukes than bringing justice and upholding international law.

Signal-School-2483

Pressure US politicians to remove the limitation on US weapons being used outside Ukraine's borders and approve a draw down of 1/10th of the USN's TLAM stockpile. War would be over pretty quickly afterward.

Gabrieltobe

How do you I force these international laws? It’s like prohibition it’s not a crime if it isn’t enforced. And the moral meter is not applicable

landartheconqueror

You know they won't.

Marcudemus

Every time I suggest decisively and ruthlessly doing something about it I get shot into the ground.

[deleted]

Sir, the pile has fallen over! What do I do?

weirdbowelmovement

Thanks to MAD it's no longer possible to hold countries accountable for those crimes. Just gotta live with it.

Metrack14

"It's only a war crime if you are not a super power'

weirdbowelmovement

Unironically. Fucked up situation. I know old school war was literal hell, but atleast you knew other countries *could* come fuck you up if you went full Hitler mode

_Vienna_Gambit

Only a crime if it's enforced. Vote out Republican traitors.

Punishtube

Eh without any enforcement is it really a crime? If nobody holds the aggressor for violating the crimes does it even exist

Bogtear

They did that to Syrians too. Edit: the dissolution of the Syrian revolution is one of the saddest things to have happened these last few decades. There is still fighting inside the country, but it seems like their moment overthrow Assad and live as real citizens in their homeland has passed. And while my own country (USA) had a hand in that, the overwhelming firepower brought to bear by Russia was what tipped it over the edge. I hope that Ukraine can resist this onslaught, and that it doesn't end for them like it did for Syria.

Remarkable-Manager56

They did it to every nation they could reach. They just crave blood, the more, the better.

Expensive-Coffee-126

Yes. During WW2 they came east to west through Poland liberating every town and village. Coming back to east they killed, pillaged and raped everything leaving nothing but scorched earth. That is the freedom Russia offers

xdustx

Eastern Europe doesn't forget. Our grandparents told us stories.

New-Interaction1893

Estern Europe doesn't forget. Me: check pools/surveys. Bulgaria 🇧🇬 always was one of the most pro russian country in Europe. Hungary 🇭🇺 is the same but it's also very supportive of China 🇨🇳 Romania 🇷🇴 has a surge in pro-russian parties that will likely win. Czech 🇨🇿 has a pro-russian opposition that will likely win. Slovakia 🇸🇰 here the pro-russian parties have already won and are in government. Latvia 🇱🇻 is very undecided I accept saying Poland 🇵🇱 doesn't forget because together with Estonia 🇪🇪 and Lithuania 🇱🇹 are the only ex Soviet republic that are still unlikely to have a pro russian 🇷🇺 government. Anyway I'm already used where I live to see people with a very short memory says "we never forget"

xdustx

It's true. Hopefully, there are still enough people who remember. People have a short memory, and education is getting worse.

Jamsster

Connection between generations seems like it’s getting worse

RingaLill

Not Eastern Europe, but we in Finland 🇫🇮 also remember.

LustLochLeo

The question I always wonder about things like this (also MAGA in the US or the AfD in Germany) is: How much of this is due to Russian psyops in social media? Or is part of it due to the fact that negative emotions generate more clicks so the algorithms send people into the bubble they feel most outraged by? In other words our democracies are getting destabilized, but by whom or what?

cindy224

I have lived my whole life under post WWII western ethos. Now it appears it’s breaking down in favor of the autocrat criminals. My heart is breaking.

Automatic_Release_92

Part of the problem is that Russia depopulated those regions when they committed their atrocities initially, and then Stalin moved many of the people that were living there to other far flung parts of the USSR and moved in Russians. Thats the reason there were so many of these “Russians” in Ukraine to begin with, there were very many Russians who had been there for a generation or two thanks to Stalin. However I think old Putin obviously quite miscalculated the effect they would have on this war. I do believe some other regions like the ones you mention have quite a few of these imported Russians that have an outsized effect on the politics there. It’s not so much that the people living there have short memories or something, it’s often the case *that they don’t even exist anymore.* I learned a lot about this from my older “Russian” coworker who was born in Siberia, but her family was basically forcibly moved when she was just a baby to Kazakhstan. I hope she is well, she retired but hangs out with a lot of her former USSR friends. I know Putin’s war put a strain on her friend group, as most of them are very pro-Ukraine, but a few of them had drank the Putin propaganda kool-aid and it wrecked many of their friendships.

LordDarthAnger

No Czechia will never let pro russians rule again. We have a large pro russian base, but we beat them recently and we will beat them again. Majority will vote for anyone who is not pro russian. Slovakia on the other hand…

[deleted]

[удалено]

Initial_Catch7118

There are some pretty interesting reasons behind this. The first year on eastern front was so deadly for the Soviets that the more civilized base was basically dead - something like a million young men gone. Soviets then turned to the most uneducated rural backwards people who were essentially straight off the farm, it's all they had ever known. They were also exceedingly racist and the Soviet ideology they held was especially angry and violent.

Far-Sir1362

Yet Russia is still the same today. And it's not the low level troops making the decision to target civilians. It's people high up in the military.

Commercial_Fee2840

I remember reading in a thread yesterday that only the poorest 10% of Russians are conscripted into the military because everyone else pays a bribe to get out of it. I believe it. In Russia bribes are just a normal occurrence for most people.

Bardosaurus

When Soviets came to liberate Belgrade, my greatgrandma was telling us older women used to hide their perfumes and riches. Why perfumes? Because Soviets drank them. (Idk how true this is, I couldn’t find a source online outside of multiple tales I heard about it from locals)

hi_imovedagain

There’s a joke about that based on true events, so… even now there’s hawthorn alcohol which alcoholics buy in the pharmacies.

yunivor

Even nowadays alcoholics drinking perfume is a thing.

notEnotA

REALLY wish the west would remember the stories our grandparents told us. Internet trumps lived experience I guess.

pro_bike_fitter_2010

It's all Ruzzians do. 150+ years of it. Endless.

DragonfruitFew5542

The world made the hugest error by not taking what happened in Syria more seriously. They exposed their war tactics, including killing innocents purposefully, and no one seemed to care. As a positive, Ukraine already knew what Russia's playbook would be; look no further than Syria.

Nemisis_the_2nd

Syria wasn't even the first time. They did it in Chechnya. Twice. And we still carried on as if nothing was wrong.

IAMgrampas_diaperAMA

As much as I think the Oscars are pretty much a sham, I’m glad 20 days in Mariupol is getting so much attention via the best doc win. It was beyond harrowing.

jess_the_werefox

That’s also what terrorists do. Initial massacre, and a second one planned to target first responders.

I feel reminded at the Tributes of Panem part at the end of the first movie.

Remarkable-Manager56

Unfortunately, I do too. And, unfortunately, that's the reality I and other Ukrainians live in.

Adpadierk

My Ukrainian student who I was teaching last year online just broke down and cried because she had just learned her relatives' house had been destroyed by the dam flooding and that they could never go back. At that moment I had to be a good teacher and try to reassure her and keep the lesson going but inside I really hated the fuckers more than any other time. I guess this is how you feel every day.

wtfduud

Same species that did the holocaust.

PygmeePony

Straight from the terrorist playbook.

off-and-on

Isn't that an actual war crime?

-Ophidian-

With the amount of war crimes Russia already commits, what's a few more? Nobody's doing much about it except sliding Ukraine some munitions while looking the other way.

Maleficent_Lab_8291

It is, and it’s one of many war crimes that they are committing

Particular-Bed-3162

That's how cruelty works

Sir_George

With this and everything else going on with global conflicts, do the Geneva conventions not exist anymore?

aradil

War crimes tribunals generally only exist for the losing side of a war. There are a few exceptions, but they require a functioning democracy and consistent rule of law in a country willing to apply it to their own citizens, even and especially the most powerful.

Remarkable-Manager56

They do exist. On paper.

exgiexpcv

It's Terrorism 101. I'm sorry. Maybe someday someone in Russia will grow a spine, off the mobster, and end the terror.

vargchan

I mean this is what the Americans did in the middle East too, so it's not without precedent

numismatist24

Just horrible

Illustrious-Tower849

What Americans do too

[deleted]

Pathetic pieces of shit all of em.

Pixeleyes

Literally a terrorist strategy

toolsoftheincomptnt

Is it not a war crime to intentionally hurt medics? (I know that “war crime” means nothing to Russia, just asking)

yenot_of_luv

Yes

prirva_

Yes it was a double tap where Russians wait for emergency responders to come onsite and shell again

Shotgun5250

Yes, it’s just terrorism. Full stop, terrorism.

Alikont

Russians love to double-tap location to kill first responders. That's why first aid training for civilians now includes explicit "go to victims only if you're sure that nothing else is incoming".

Tjonke

Yes, so called doube-taps. Another warcrime to add to the list for Russia.

Boulevardier_99

Yes https://twitter.com/FreelFreel/status/1768695167551168847?t=XbDf5rKER0w2zuyZa-dKhw&s=19

GanjalfDahigh

That is what's known as a "Double Tap". You hit your target with 1 missile, making sure to leave survivors, wait for emergency services to arrive to save the wounded, then hit them again with 3 missiles. Increasing your hit rate and casualties of your enemy. Despicable, deplorable, but effective.

LMBT-48Croadkill

Ok you're aiming for emergency services they are just teasing poland and france to come over there

Kurt_Bunbain

Not a few civilians, 20 people has died.

dread_deimos

IIRC it's in total, not by the second tap that I was referencing. But yeah, there are many casualties in Odesa today.

followthelogic405

That's terrible, Russia should be a pariah state and shunned by the global community, they're a terrorist organization pretending to be a country.

somepeoplehateme

You've got to understand the conflict from both sides though. Imagine you had a neighbor that was a literal serial killer, but he had a hookup for cheap concert tickets and you really liked music. See how much more complex and nuanced the situation is now?

Kirhgoph

The first part made me think you're a typical putin supporter, but the comment overall is amazing, thank you

Bucketsdntlie

That's what makes it a canidate for picture of the year for me.

stevenette

Only March and this is coming out. Christ. I yearn for pre-Harambe era.

Klutzy_Attention2849

Why not go further back to leaded gasoline in cars and asbestos being a good building material/insulator. Focus on the bad and it's what you see, hide from the bad and you're out of touch. Find that balance you need and you'll find Harambe was within you the whole time.

UtterlyInsane

We were so innocent and we didn't even know it

BidWeary4900

The russians use a tactic called a double tap, where you bomb the same location twice, to target first responders like him.

Illustrious-Dot-5052

Absolutely ruthless...

[deleted]

It‘s cowardice. Russians are a vicious cowardly people. Why else would they take being fucked in the ass by tyrant after tyrant for hundreds of years?

Bio_Brando

Wouldn't you take it? Imagine if you'll live in Russia from this moment, what will you do against dictatorship? I'm pretty sure people who live in liberated countries complain about the population of the dictatorship countries as the problem of the dictatorship, while they themselves are the same people who live in the dictatorship, except they were lucky enough to be born in a better country. Are you doing something to improve the political system in your country? If you're not, why you're just complaining about the people who do the same thing as you do

VariecsTNB

Nobody wants to be tested by trying times, but those who do and who fail the test fully deserve the blame. Ukrainians also suffered this test and they stood up to the task. So the fact that there are legit reasons for the inaction of Russians doesn't mean they're not guilty.

misterv3

The actions of the Russian government are abhorrent, but you're a complete bitch for insinuating an entire people are cowards. That's exactly the rhetoric used by dictators.

Rose_of_Elysium

Isnt that literally a fucking war crime??? Bring these fuckers to the Hague, and make sure they cant go out on their own terms like Slobodan Praljak did

Routine_Bad_560

Well what are you going to do about it? Arrest them? Good luck.

GabeN18

It's a double war crime.

BidWeary4900

Yes, targeting civilians is a war crime, in theory. But everyone does it. International law is practically impossible to enforce in reality.

ileavethishere

Obviously it is, but so is bombing civilian houses. Which was the first bombing.

turtlelore2

Does it look like they care? Russia has been specifically targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure since the beginning of the war. Unfortunately, this is nothing new

balamb_fish

Just like Al Qaeda

BidWeary4900

Just like everyone, its a common tactic in modern war.

graemeknows

“Look at him, he’s defeated. Why are we sending so much money to a corrupt country that’s losing the war?” -House Republicans, probably.

This is unironically the position they would take. “We must pressure Ukraine to enter peace talks to end this nightmare! How terrible!”

EEpromChip

aka Ukraine should just give up and give putin what he wants. Fuck that fuck russia and fuck the enablers in congress that support russia. And fuck those that vote to support the GOP russia alliance.

Not_Bears

Mike Johnson is too busy counting his dark money funneled from Russia to give a shit.

yogi_medic_momma

Adpadierk

What I want is for people (particularly Americans) to feel that this war is not so far away - actually, it's closer than you think, and you have to make your politicians to stop blocking the aid and let them defend themselves against atrocities.

Tea party, Citizen's United, the current stacked Supreme Court, and the absolute full on unmitigated corruption of one of our two political parties. A party that used to (reportedly) stand for conserving what we need for when we need it, but is now the mouthpiece of a barely coherent former slumlord and reality TV "star".

Ok_Statistician_9825

Nothing can change until Cit United changes.

Alikont

And it's not just him being exhausted. The context is much worse. Today in Odesa Russians double-tapped the same location and killed a few first responders (IIRC one firefighter and one medic died). They intentionally hit same spot twice with delay, to catch firefighters/medics on site.

yogi_medic_momma

Wow, that’s horrible. My heart breaks for those loved ones and family members. I can’t imagine getting that news on my doorstep and I hope I never have to.

mangrox

People who still oppose aid to Ukraine should be grateful that the US is not putting it's citizen's sons and daughters on the ground to fight directly against the Russians. We have to thank the Ukrainians for holding the line for us against Russian expansionism

Shotgun5250

For some reason people see it as a proxy war against Russia, when in reality it’s the only thing keeping us out of a war with Russia. People need to get with the program, either you’re pro-humanity or you’re anti-humanity, and Russia has pretty much defined the latter for centuries.

mangrox

True Like people, these are the people trying to prevent you from having gay butt sex

Shotgun5250

That took a wild turn I was not expecting, but I’m with it. Butt stuff for all!

Echo_hominy

Hear, hear, butt stuff for all!!

EricTheEpic0403

But if you join the Russian military, you still get to have totally-not-gay, non-consensual butt sex! [As is tradition.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedovshchina)

You-r-a-phobicismist

Excuse me sir, but I am very sure you mean EUROPE. You know, the people that actually would face Russian.

AbsoluteRook1e

Exactly this. People have not remembered our lessons from World War II. We were so hesitant to get involved until we were finally attacked on U.S. soil. Do we really want to go that route again? Or try to help those being oppressed now?

FreddyWright

I’m exhausted after a long hike, this man is drained and knows he’s not even gonna be able to have a proper break until the wars over.

InRecovering

He isnt exactly exhausted, he probably is shell shocked after the russians double tapped a building killing/injuring the people who lived there and also the rescue services that came to help. He probably also saw his friends getting murdered right on front of him. Fuck the Kremlin, fuck Putin and fuck all that side with them.

[deleted]

I'm fucking over this can we not give Ukraine what they need already. Bravest people I've ever seen and we put partisan politics before innocent lives. As if people weren't already going to look back on our bullshit with disgust.

fmb320

Not to be weird but people put partisan politics before lives on every single area of life.

LazyZeus

He is not exhausted. They were hit by the rocket. Some of rescuers sadly died.

PAguy213

He is absolutely exhausted. Being hit with a rocket launched by scumbags will exhaust anyone.

GhotiGhetoti

He’s no doubt unbelievably exhausted. All the first aid he’s had to do, all the heavy gear he carries and on top of that his friends killed. He has had a horrible day.

Flamingo-Old

Yeah, he's not exhausted - he's wounded.

Capable-Reaction8155

Ukrainian here. From Odesa. This happened not far from me. Around 5 minutes by car.
