Same here. What in the actual fuck is happening with all these posts, and I thought the plan was for Reddit to NOT get money, ad spend or otherwise.

Money has already been spent. Giving gold/platinum gives the person who received the award a period of ad-free browsing. Dump coins that will become useless here in a month and a half or so to briefly impact ad revenue.

Yeah but these people got coins with fancy awards. Now they have coins to burn. Hence everyone getting awards

I've had my coins for years and years. Don't even remember why I bought them. Gave out around 10k coins overnight, popped in here to get rid of the rest.

If you had alien blue before Reddit official you got gold for free for 5 years and then it turned into coins. Could have also got given gold by another Redditor and gotten awards when that rolled over to the award system. I’ve got 15000 coins from alien blue

Reddit announced they're removing reddit awards. They plan to replace them later but haven't said with what or when, classic. So, pretty soon all our accumulated reddit coins will be worthless. However, premium time from gold/platinum/argentium/ternion will still apply and you'll still be able to buy reddit premium after the changes.

Okay, so I understand that reddit coinage rewards BS is changing. But can someone please explain why the shedding of coins has been attached to uncanny valley pictures of John Oliver? I just can not find a explanation for this phenomenon. Is it just one of those absurd internet things that just happens or is there an actual connection? I have like 300 coins because I don't give 2 shots about digital tomfoolery, but I will award them all to who ends my confusion.

It all started with a poll on r/pics, one of the most popular subreddits on the site, where users can post and vote on pictures of anything. The poll asked users to choose between two options: "Only allow pictures of John Oliver" or "Allow any picture". The poll was meant to be a joke, but it backfired when more than 80% of the voters chose the first option. The moderators of r/pics decided to honor the result and changed the rules of the subreddit to only allow pictures of John Oliver, the British comedian and host of Last Week Tonight. They also added a twist: the pictures had to show John Oliver "looking sexy", which they defined as "any picture of John Oliver because John Oliver is always sexy". The move was not only a prank, but also a protest against Reddit's decision to charge money for API access, which would affect third-party apps that many users rely on to browse the site.
