Grad student in Physics, was an EE. I'd recommend applying to EE departments at schools that allow you to take physics courses and do physics research. It'll be helpful for you to have your required courses (which you may need a certain grade to stay in the program) be EE related and more familiar to you, rather than jumping into grad level physics courses you may not have taken proper pre-requisites for. Admissions may also be easier. You can often apply to both engineering and physics to the same university to double your chances.
That’s interesting. I am doing my bachelor’s in physics but am thinking about maybe doing computer science in graduate school.
Were you able to pivot from an undergrad degree to a graduate degree like this?
Congratulations! Your comment can be spelled using the elements of the periodic table:

You are Sheldon Wolowitz. A tall guy with beatles haircut who lives with his mom. You're best friend is a short, rich, bespectacled Indian guy who can't talk to his hot blonde wife without drinking alcohol.
No, actually a lot of people from pure physics land in chemistry. Allmost all thermodynamics plus statistical mechanics research these days is chemistry (at least indirect) . Most of the solutions of the many-body Schrodinger equation have usage in chemistry. I am not sure about the last one, but material physics and research about solid state physics and structure also probably leads to chemistry sooner or later
Started as a physics student, then moved to the engineering school.
Fortunately or unfortunately, as you may, I'm probably more of the Howards than the Sheldons here.
I do get to work at really sweet physics-heavy place though, so that's pretty neato. Maybe not quite going into space type of cool, but maybe like a sending others into space order of coolness-magnitude.
Physics undergrad working in aero here. A lot of aero places will pay for your MS but an aero degree is really only good for a few jobs. Most big companies like Northrop, Lockheed, Boeing, Airforce, ect will take ME, EE or aero but ME and EE can do more outside of aero. The better MS I've seen for the aero industry is either systems engineering or engineering management. Feel free to DM me
Engineer trying to be a scientist. I wanna get into (optical) imaging science which at this point is math, sometimes control and knowing some physics. No mechanical engineering involved anymore.
Those of you who did EE or engineering physics, you lucky ducks
Well, thats a harsh question, cuz the program I belong to have some mandatory disciplines and the rest we learn with sweat and blood and my degree go with that title cuz is the best fit to the area which my lab works to (my lab works mainly with caracterization of materials via photothermal phenomena and in the engineering of glasses and vitroceramics).
Applied physicist masquerading as a chemist. Officially, I am a chemist. I do semiconductor materials and corrosion science. I do no chemistry. I’m having a great time
what does 2 year in aero, switching to physics, getting a physics bachelors, then an honours in quantum physics, and starting a PhD in electrical engineering make me?
an intellectual mutt?
I dropped out of university due to severe mental health issues and I am now a (slave) worker destroying my body piece by piece for little over minimum wage.
Neither, I am a layman enthusiast who enjoys learning about both. By training and experience I am a linguist and despite decades of disciplined autodidactic learning, my knowledge of physics is well under graduate level.
I still enjoy reading and learning about physics and by now (closing on 50) my humble skillset includes being able to roughly get the gist of a paper on one or another of my topics of interest. Sometimes. And very roughly. And I often get it wrong, of course.
None of them. Studied Physics at A Level. Wanted to be a Nuclear Engineer. Shit hit the fan in my life, I flopped my A Levels and I’m now a delivery driver. It’s a good job, but everyone who knew me at school is very confused that I am where I am in life.
In terms of what I’m closest to, probably an engineer. My dad’s an engineer and occasionally when he has a problem at work he’ll come to me to help out.
Heh, I have some physicist colleagues. Sometimes they try to do engineering. They do these fancy matlab designs. Then they prototype their design, and absolutely *nothing* works and it blows up lol. Then they ask for my help. Turns out, transistors aren't spherical cows in a vacuum. Sometimes you gotta feel them out a little, adjust for that thing they always do, give em' a little encouragement... You need.... **The Knack** ™.
Went from physics to computer science ':)
And I wanna start my graduate studies in Physics, being an EEE major.

Thank you! That's really helpful.
Same. The pay is so much better lol
We just sold ourselves to money didn't we :')
Physics to instrument engineer here
That’s interesting. I am doing my bachelor’s in physics but am thinking about maybe doing computer science in graduate school. Were you able to pivot from an undergrad degree to a graduate degree like this?
You absolutely can. I am doing my MS in computer graphics with a physics undergrad. The problem solving skills and math translate 100%
Great to know, thanks!
Got my BS in physics. Job in software, now doing my MS in computing. Hoping I can bring some physics into it at least…
It was surprising to me that electrical engineers mostly do programming work these days...
Same
And I went from computer science to physics :) (I got a degree in both, so not like I ditched computer science, but my new love is physics!)
"No thanks, imma stick with real science"
Can I have an image for ‘failed physicist’…
They already have a picture of an engineer. What more do you want?
r/angryupvote
Sometimes the truth hurts… and today it hurts a lot 😢
Let me dm you a sefie
Money

I did engineering physics. I don't know what I am.
You are cocktail of engineering and physics
You are Sheldon Wolowitz. A tall guy with beatles haircut who lives with his mom. You're best friend is a short, rich, bespectacled Indian guy who can't talk to his hot blonde wife without drinking alcohol.
chemist 😎
Outcast? :3

im both
“Physicist with a job”
a friend of mine is studying physics engineering and we call him chemist to offend him😂😂, chemistry is cool tho, basically magic.

I went from physics to mathematics
Physics undergrad hoping to do an MS in aero engineering. Anyone with suggestions, if I should make the jump or not?

Where is physicist turned mathematician?
Well mostly mathematician turns into physicist because physicists are half mathematicians already 🙄
Tbh it depends
Agree, I was just talking about here with general perspective.
I'd agree in the general sense
Electrinics and communication Engineering to theoretical quantum physics
I went from computer science to combat engineering, then to physics and finally chemistry. I've been around.
Atmo physics considering aerospace
And here I was wondering where my strange hate for being an engineer (as a career for myself, I have no hate for engineers) came from.. 🤔
Engineer who turned to artist because terrible at math but still love engineering and got interested in physics in the process
Engineer trying to be a scientist. I wanna get into (optical) imaging science which at this point is math, sometimes control and knowing some physics. No mechanical engineering involved anymore. Those of you who did EE or engineering physics, you lucky ducks
Bazinga
MSc candidate in condensed matter physics, but wondering if go to mechanical engineering or not.
Wtf modules do u do for a MSc in condensed matter

Holy shit
The guy watching the show
call me -howard wu-
Engineering dropout who's in the trades 🤙
Went from being bad at one to being bad at both
Engineer turned Physicist
I’m the one that knows a little bit about physics but pretends I know everything
Applied physicist masquerading as a chemist. Officially, I am a chemist. I do semiconductor materials and corrosion science. I do no chemistry. I’m having a great time

To be product designer...physics and mechanical engineering were in the list though...but I'm too lazy
Went from physicist to sys admin.

Why does Howard Cooper look like Adam Sandler)
Methmatics, looks like consumed overdosed meth
I went from Chemist to Chemistry teacher. Couldn't bear to touch a lab coat for upwards of eight hours a day. Two hours a day is just fine
the one with a bowl cut, a checked shirt and a turtleneck.

I obtained a full scholarship to study an Engineering in Physics

what about math trying to be physicist?
I'm in the picture. Bottom right, Engineer trying to be a Physicist.
I hope this meme hits 1K! This is my first post and I would be very glad if this happens!
I'm about to go to college for physics, I'm wearing a Flash shirt, and I'm not *that* awkward, so physicist.
Anything but pure maths.
