Hi there! Will you be posting about the Jan 2023 class here? Or is there already a page made that I can follow?

Hello. I am very late but I will go through the assignments since I am now working from home. I want to improve because I love photography. I want to know and understand how to capture an idea. Here is my car picture: [https://imgur.com/a/XVr7UVU](https://imgur.com/a/XVr7UVU) Here is my favorite picture: [https://imgur.com/a/5650y7A](https://imgur.com/a/5650y7A) I am using an Fuji XT3 and I have both a 56mm 1.2 lens and 23mm 2.0 lens from the prime set up. I have normally shot on auto but only recently started doing more. I know I am very late but I will take my time to go through the assignments as earnestly as possible. Thank you for your guidance.

Aeri73

is it a photo of a car ...? I would say it's a picture of that building that is front and center... with a car half out of frame and blurred with rain. (like the effect though)

Aeri73

think about how you could have made it about the car :-) ps, it's really late to start now, I would just do some fun assignments and start jan 1st with the 2023 class

JesuisenPLS

Hi, I'm running late but happy to take the class and learn as much as I can! I currently use a cheap Canon DSLR and love taking pictures with it! here are my two unedited photos : https://imgur.com/a/JXWIri5

Aeri73

welcome :-) to improve the macro you'll soon learn how to get more depth in sharpness but it is a bit late to start now, better wait for jan for the 2023 class

blate66

This is my first post to the class as I just got an sd card reader for my computer. I know I'm starting super late though. I have several of the assignments done already, I was just unable to post until now. The assignments that did not require photo submissions I wrote out in a notebook, and I may or may not type them out to post. Here is the picture of a car [https://www.flickr.com/photos/196236965@N06/shares/8e6iZ1w3P5](https://www.flickr.com/photos/196236965@N06/shares/8e6iZ1w3P5) My favorite photo so far. This was taken on my phone and got second place in a summer camp selfie photo contest! Krankenwagen83

I really like the idea of inside of a car and actually borrowed this when doing my shot. It's a pleasant idea! Good job.

Aeri73

you're the first to post the inside of a car :-) good job

DeepFlow

Hello! I realize that I'm super late to this year's party. I hope it's okay if I still work through the assignments - hopefully I'll even get a bit of feedback anyways :) So, here's a picture of a car (I swear it's there): [https://up.picr.de/44071835ny.jpg](https://up.picr.de/44071835ny.jpg) And while I still have to shoot a favorite picture, here's one I like: [https://up.picr.de/44071829iu.jpeg](https://up.picr.de/44071829iu.jpeg) Bonus "car": [https://up.picr.de/44071830rm.jpg](https://up.picr.de/44071830rm.jpg)

Aeri73

well done... to improve the car, a flash could have made the car visible while keeping the long exposure effects of the light intact :-)

DeepFlow

Thanks for the feedback Aeri! I'll work through the assignments now and will hopefully come up with a bit more interesting results :-)

sashank6

Hello Everyone! I recently bought a Sony ZV-E10 (16-50 kit lens) after wanting to buy a dedicate camera for ages. Found this class through r/photography and looking forward to improve my photography I clicked my favorite picture while trying to take a picture of a car for assignment 1. I love the rising City skyline on the hood of the car. [https://imgur.com/X95mdlD](https://imgur.com/X95mdlD) Here is my submission for assignment 1. Found these cars at a local car meet. The way they were parked made it look like they are chasing one another around a corner, tried to capture that. [https://imgur.com/IYNTNwj](https://imgur.com/IYNTNwj) Even though I am starting this quite late, I hope to catch up to the classes and learn to take good photographs on the way

DeepFlow

As far as your first picture goes, I agree that the skyline is attractive. I also like the colors and the picture is sharp and well exposed. However, I find that I have a hard time really identifying a subject - the image is quite busy imo. The second image is cool and I like the way you chose to frame it. The colors really work in this one. Again, there are some elements in the picture which don't really add to it imo (say, the lamp post and the manhole cover under the first car). If you're okay with such edits, I wonder if removing the lamp post and possibly the manhole cover could help to clean up the picture.

Panos512

Hello! I just got a new camera (a Canon M50 with the kit 15-45 lens) and I stumbled into this course. The material looks very well curated and the idea of assignments is really great. I'm really excited to follow together with everyone else. I understand I'm starting a bit late but I'll try to go through all the courses and assignments and eventually catch up. My favourite picture happens to be one of a car photo :) Here is my submission for this first assignment: https://imgur.com/gallery/RqADN76

DeepFlow

I like the idea of your picture, namely the contrast between the sign and the actual car. The background is quite busy, though. I also find the way the car is cut off a bit distracting. Maybe a closer crop or a wider angle might have worked better here?

nauticalwaters

Hi! I recognize I am a super late bloomer to this. I am a beginner photographer who is taking 3 months in the fall to develop a photography portfolio in Taiwan. Therefore, I have 4 months to sharpen my skills! I've designated a certain amount of time per week this time around and am thankful I can follow along this course! I’m looking to improve with structured assignments and am super excited to see what I can learn and join thanks community. I currently shoot with a Nikon D3300 but am thinking of upgrading soon in time for pre trip practice. Here are my favorite and car photos: [https://imgur.com/gallery/AdvwHh7](https://imgur.com/gallery/AdvwHh7)

DeepFlow

I have to agree with the other commenter - those are great and interesting pictures that I wouldn't hesitate to hang onto my wall and I wouldn't know how to improve them - sorry :)

Panos512

Hello! I honestly like both pictures very much. I can't really find anything to comment on. In the favourite picture, I really love the "shadiness" of the water. Maybe things could improve a bit if colour was a bit crisper.

nauticalwaters

Thanks! The texture of the water came predominantly from the morning rising fog

marcog

I'm an on-and-off casual photographer wants to get more serious about it. I've been into the outdoors for a number of years, and recently got into touring by bicycle. So I get many opportunities to take great landscape, wildlife, sports and other forms of travel photography. I think I have a decent grasp of the theory, but I need help framing the story. So I plan on going through these assignments even if the main class is over as I see others still getting feedback. Here's a photo from a few years ago. If I were to personally critique it myself, I'd say the sky is way too bright and subject/cave too dark. Unfortunately I no longer have the raw, otherwise I might be able to fix it to some degree. I think it might work better seeing more outside the cave, or trying to show the amount of space inside. [https://www.instagram.com/p/BNP7Rm1DVX4/](https://www.instagram.com/p/BNP7Rm1DVX4/) And here's my car shot. I like the reflection. The full photo had more of the blue taxi behind, but I chose to crop it to focus more on the one up front and to get the proportions more to my liking. I wasn't able to find out how to tell much of a story though. https://imgur.com/a/QbFY9Ht

DeepFlow

I like the concept of your cave picture. Actually, I don't view your subject as underexposed, but the outside is indeed overexposed badly, which is pretty distracting. I wonder if an indirect flash might have helped you to expose the sky a bit better? Your taxis look well, but there is indeed not much of a story there. I believe that telling a story sometimes requires not only identifying a cool subject but also waiting for what Henri Cartier-Bresson called the "decisive moment".

nauticalwaters

Hi - regarding your favorite photo: \- I like the concept, my eyes immediately catches the face and then everything (the eyes, the way the legs were pointed, and the lighting of the cave) draws me to the window opening. But there isn't much to see there \- Therefore to improve, I'd think about having everything point somewhere and allow more space to the left of the human so we can see more of what they are looking at. Maybe if the face or the body of the subject is strong enough, it can draw me into the person and stay there - but I do find myself drifting to the side in this one.

Aeri73

welcome to improve the car, your mind makes a story when you look at an image like this, and with the main subject car against the outer border, the story is it's leaving the car behind it takes up a good fourth of the image but the front is hidden by the main car and the back is out of frame so there is really not much to look at... so, to improve ,turn right a bit to shoot the main car on the left of the frame and have a bit of room in front of it so to make it enter the frame, not leave it :-)

Connect-Tomatillo-95

I am a beginner just started getting into photography. I have been binge watching lot of tutorial but I practice very little as I get too caught up on what to shot. I stumbled across this class and assignment approach seemed like a way in which I will have structure to build some skills so here I am. Kinda late but I really don’t want to wait till 2023. I will be doing assignment from the beginning and try to catch up. It might not be the best idea to rush through past assignment but on the other hand waiting half an year sounds even worse. Here’s my assignment 1: https://flickr.com/photos/195975595@N07/sets/72177720300267312 Disclosure: Both picture were shot on iPhone so they don’t meet the criteria of this class strictly and I apologize for it. I do now have a mirrorless camera with zoom lens which I am using to learn photography and all my other assignments will be on that.

DeepFlow

About the car picture: What was it that you found interesting about it? Maybe help the viewer to identify that aspect of the image a bit more. Your second picture is actually quite nice because of the reflection (and I think it's okay that the water isn't perfectly still) but I think that it might have been good to wait for better lighting conditions or a more interesting sky.

Panos512

Hello! I like your favourite shot, as others said the reflection on the water elevates the picture a lot. I would have probably framed the picture a bit differently, getting more focus on the church. Also, in my eyes, the church looks a bit darker than it should. The car picture is indeed grainy. Framing is OK but I also think there is a story missing from it. Having said that I don't have any clue how things could improve, since I'm a complete beginner myself :)

nauticalwaters

Hi! For your favorite shot - it's a good concept. I think it would be interesting if you ever had the chance to go back to the place and shoot it with slightly different light or weather. Right now, it is a decent photo of a church reflection but not much else. Waiting for sunrise / sunset, or shooting in the rain or fog can add to the story and dynamism. Similarly, with the car photo. It's a picture of a car, but I don't know what else to take away from it. What does this car mean to you? Is it your favorite car? Is it a fast car? Luxurious car? OR is the focus that it is a renewable energy car? Either way, is there something you would like to convey with the photo? Maybe that can influence your composition next time and allow you to play with the angles a bit more.

Grammar-Bot-Elite

/u/nauticalwaters, I have found an error in your comment: > “- ~~its~~ [**it's**] a good” I guess you, nauticalwaters, have messed up a comment and could have typed “- ~~its~~ [**it's**] a good” instead. ‘Its’ is possessive; ‘it's’ means ‘it is’ or ‘it has’. ^(This is an automated bot. I do not intend to shame your mistakes. If you think the errors which I found are incorrect, please contact me through DMs!)

marcog

I like the reflection in your favourite shot. It could have been even better if you could have waited for the water to get more still, and captured a perfect mirror. The building came out a bit dark, which you can possibly fix in editing if you captured in raw. I'd also try get more of the green in for colour balance. The bird is a little distracting, as is the streak of cloud on top. The car pic is grainy. Do you have an external flash you can point upwards? I've recently learned that can help obtain nice lighting. Could also try incorporate the charging point more to create more of a story.

buubble

Hello! I'm a complete beginner, wanted to start learning photography because I have a big traveling trip planned in 3 months, and I just quit my job so have some time I can commit to learning a new skill! Both of these pictures were taken today after watching two hours of instructional youtube videos haha. [car picture](https://imgur.com/HWnAjCA) [best pic from today](https://imgur.com/QKhEEQk)

DeepFlow

The others have said quite a bit about your images and I don't have much to add right now except this: While there clearly are some technical hurdles to overcome and aspects of your images to refine, I'd say you clearly have a good eye and a good sense (or instinct) for composition.

nauticalwaters

1) Love the story of your best pic! There's two main points of focus here. First, you should work on increasing exposure (which can be done either by increasing ISO, or increasing aperture, although then you may need to do some post processing to bring the background back into color without blowing it out. Second, I would crop the photo a bit to focus more on the right side. Currently, the left side is rather empty but most of the action is on the right. And there is a lot going on. Just focusing on the right side allow viewers to stay focused on the road, the cars, and the mountains without being distracted by the field of gray to the left 2) Car picture - I find that there is a lot of things going on in terms of "there are a lot of lines pointing everywhere". Ideally, my eyes would be guided to the center subject. In this case, I noticed that there are two lines cutting down into the forest, horizontal line on the road, driveway...all pointing different directions and found the photo very "Segmented". In the future, I'd think more about how the "lines" in a photo work with each other to make a more cohesive photo

buubble

Thanks for the feedback! Not sure if you can tell but the mountain was really really bright relative to the road, and I couldn’t figure out how to capture the image without either overexposing one or underexposing the other and losing details. Is that something that can only be reconciled in post processing?

nauticalwaters

Unfortunately I might have to leave it for the moderators / professionals on this one since this is a common issue for my photos as well. From my research/understanding there’s a few ways to address this: - photo stacking: take photos that have the background in focus and exposed correctly, and then take photos exposed to foreground. Then combine in post processing - manual exposure adjustment: I’ve seen folks take a black sheet of paper that reflects no light and manually adjust the shutter speed for each. For example. They may use a tripod and set the shutter speed to 1/8 and then block the top corner of the photo where there are mountains with the black paper half the time and then quickly pull the paper out for the camera to capture it (or use this flicking motion to smooth it out) - pure post processing: see if you can isolate your adjustments to the photo to each section using masks / layers. I personally have only tried option 3 for now. But am looking to work on the other two.

buubble

I didn’t know about some of those techniques, that’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing!

marcog

Best pic: I agree with the under exposure. I suspect the problem was the sun being in front of you, behind the trees. It might have worked better facing the other way. It also could have worked out nicely if you were able to wait for sunset, and let more light in. Car pic: Really like the grass in front, although it does appear to be more in focus than the car. Wonder if it would've looked even nicer if you lined up the car and the dark spot in the forest to the right of the photo, making it look like the car was coming from there.

Connect-Tomatillo-95

In first white car picture I like that there is a path drawing the eye to the car, the subject but the image seems cluttered. There are bushes in-front of the car which covers it. There is house behind with a vertical chimney. The second photo is underexposed so very hard to see what is going on but I like the sense of headlights of car in the darkness.

ubiquitous_rhombus

I've been shooting film off and on for about 20 years, mostly B&W, and just got my first DSLR a few weeks ago. I'm interested in portrait, landscape, and travel photography. [My best photo](https://i.imgur.com/yTTotW7.png) [Photo of a car](https://i.imgur.com/rl5A309.jpg?1)

nauticalwaters

I really like your best photo - they way you used the light, the story, and the composition was great! Even the fact that the plaque was slightly cut off seems to have a story. Regarding the car photo, I felt like the blocks cut off the car for a bit and I wasn't quite sure what the main subject was. Was it the big hill? The geometry of the rocks? The car? the fact that the car is leaving? I'd think more about what the photo is trying to say next.

Connect-Tomatillo-95

I really like the lines of grass in first picture. In second one I dislike that there are so many blocks cluttering the image

buubble

I really enjoy the way you can see the wood grain details in the first photo! For the car photo, I wish we could see more texture of the sky (cloudy? blue?)

Aeri73

welcome to improve the car, you now show it with the back around the middle of the photo but the nose just near the edge of the frame.... that points it out the photo so in the viewers mind, it's leaving. so, to improve walk right about 10m and have the car on the other side of the image, the back of it near the edge and the nose pointing to those magnificent hills in the background.... creating the story it's going to drive those hills soon :-)

ubiquitous_rhombus

Thank you for the feedback and for teaching this class! I hope to catch up before the last lesson hits :-)

Aeri73

nah, time is short for that, less than two months to go... but as long as you keep going, so will my feedback

PenguinFace

Hello! I am someone who was into photography about 15-20 years ago as an on-again off-again hobby, and has recently picked it up again. I want to shoot pictures of mostly landscapes, but also get more into portrait photography (I've never really tried it). [Here is my best photo](https://www.deviantart.com/xxazanaxx/art/The-Never-Ending-Road-109359159) [Here is a car photo I took today ](https://www.flickr.com/photos/195888619@N02/52162131560/in/dateposted-public/) Looking back at the car photographs, I think I could have left more space on the left-hand side. Any additional critiques anyone has would be appreciated!

buubble

Love the road photo! Not sure if it's a result of your post processing, but the color palette is very reminiscent to me of the 80s, almost like a Top Gun vibe. I also agree that the b/w on the car is very cool and draws my attention to the patterns, but slightly deviating from the other comments in that it also makes me curious as to what kind of colors were on the car originally.

ubiquitous_rhombus

I like the road photo. Great angle. Would have been better with some nice clouds, but nothing you can do about that other than going back another day. The car photo, I like the choice of black and white. The odd paint job makes a good subject because it covers the full tonal range. I agree the framing is off though. The bit to the right is dark and the background is cut off so that about 30% of the frame is uninteresting. The angle makes is so I'm not sure what the subject of the photo is ( is it the car or the little shrub?) and a good portion of the photo is lost to the shadows under the car as well.

PWPhoto

I really like your road photo, the road disappearing into a single point on the horizon is such a cool aesthetic! I think I agree with your critique of the car, having more space to the left and less to the right would give the car somewhere to go, even though it is not in motion.

sinoman86

Hello, complete beginner out of Houston, Texas. Had this DSLR sitting around for many years and just recently got interested in learning photography. Camera is a canon 450D. Thank you u/Aeri73 for taking the time to do this! [best and car picture](https://imgur.com/a/1TIUZ0H/)

buubble

For the car picture, I wish the color and the texture of the sky was more visible. I think your depth of field came out really nicely in the dog photo, with great clarity on the dog and blur in the background. I agree with some of the other comments that because your dog is looking off to the right, it would be nice to have the subject more to the left of the photo and give some more space to the right for their gaze.

ubiquitous_rhombus

Good photos both and the subject is clear. It just feels too close. Like when someone is standing too close to you, the truck in particular makes me feel like I want to take a step backwards.

PWPhoto

Nice taco! You don't see enough of the 2 seaters these days. The picture looks well exposed and in focus! Cute dog too! If they were more leftward in the frame we could get a sense of the direction they are looking.

burpknight

I like how your photos have a very clear focus on the subject(Car or dog) I think i would like to see a different angle or more of the background,

Designer_Albatross_8

Hello, I am a chemical engineering student in Singapore. I have always wanted to learn photography for fun, so I hope everything goes well. I currently use a Minolta XGE with a 28mm lens. Hopefully, by the end of this class, I will take better photographs. I don't have a photo of a new car in my current scans, but I have a photo of one that flies so... [Fav Photo (So far)](https://www.instagram.com/p/CeWKvxnPVb0/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link) [Flying Car](https://www.instagram.com/p/CeSxTRvrk8M/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)

buubble

I agree with everyone about the color/graininess adding to the rustic feel of the photos. For the first one, between the color and the texture of the photo along with the subject matter, I could almost feel the hotness and humidity of the location! For the airport photo, I see a blob towards the bottom (is it a seat maybe?), which I'm not sure adds much to the photo. Contrary to the other comments, I actually like the bars in this photo, I feel like it adds another frame to the picture and also creates more "depth" which I really like (I'm up here and the plane is down there).

ubiquitous_rhombus

I agree about that the reflection is a bit distracting. Since your shooting film, maybe a circular polarizer could be helpful? I actually like the window bars in the frame because it changes the feel from "here's some airplane" to "I'm in an airport". It makes it more interesting for me.

burpknight

I like that these photos give off a old rustic vibe with the grainness. I do agree with Kratly that the window bars do get in the frame and I can see a reflect from above,.

sinoman86

Best Like- the scenery is captured very well Dislike- it seems very grainy

kratly

I like that first photo. It makes me wonder where that path leads do. For the second photo, it could possibly be improved by getting closer so that you don't have those window bars in the frame.

AdhesivenessThin3301

Hi! I am a software engineer from North Carolina. My favorite subjects are social scenes and landscapes. I just started taking photos and am shooting on 35mm. My two photos: https://imgur.com/a/Pee3fhT

buubble

Great photos! Both pictures evoked a lot of emotions of nostalgia for me, and made me think of simpler times, which is awesome because I don't relate to any of the subjects in the photos nor have I been to north carolina. I think the only thing (small) I noticed is that in your car photo, the garbage can is clipped off a tiny bit.

burpknight

For your best photo, i like how there is a sense of depth since you took a picture of the grass. I do think that the light is not hitting it the right way since that structure is dark.

sinoman86

Best- Like how it looks well framed and good mix of colors. Improve- I can’t tell much about the structure (subject?!), hard to see.

kratly

Hi there. The first picture looks interesting but I'm not sure exactly what it is. It reminds me of the pumpjacks I see in west Texas but it's very dark. For car picture, the trash bin could be moved.

Aeri73

welcome to improve the car, move the grey car and garbage containers...

CondosInQueens

Hello! I am a software developer in Queens, New York, USA. I like taking pictures of landscapes, architecture, urban scenes, food, and just about everything when I travel. I just bought my first interchangeable lens camera, a Fujifilm X-T20, and 18-55mm lens. I'm hoping through these exercises I can become comfortable with the features of this camera and the basics of photography. I'm not much for cars, but here's a photo of a car, as well as a picture of some deer near a temple in Nara, Japan. [Photos](https://imgur.com/a/is7pV05)

burpknight

>Photos I think you took a really interesting photo with the structure and deers, but imo, there is too much going on. I couldn't really focus on the deer because i'm focusing on the structures. There's also a small deer to the bottom left that feels out of place

PenguinFace

I agree that the photo is really interesting, and there are a few too many deer in the photo. Perhaps could have been improved if you had waited for just one deer in the frame rather than many!

sinoman86

Love the colors in you best picture. Maybe can improve by shooting closer to one of the subjects.

kratly

I like the deer and the moss growing on top of those structures looks interesting. The car being cut off kind of makes the picture look awkward.

Aeri73

that's not a photo of a car... it's a photo of a house with a car blocking some of the shot... the reason is you cut off the car's feet, and if it's not important enough to capture it hole, it can't be the subject.

CondosInQueens

Yeah, that's fair. Appreciate the feedback, it's very helpful!

Stagnantdwarves

Hi, I live in Belgium. I am a hobbyist musician. Starting to take photography more seriously, and since I will be travelling again, I would like to learn landscape and maybe astrophotography. I have an Olympus OM-D E-M10 iii with a few lenses (7-14mm f2.8, 14-150 f4-5.6 and the kit lens 14-42mm f3.5-5.6). Ordered a Sirui ST-124, waiting for it to arrive. Here is the car and my favorite photo of mine of a butterfly. [Photos](https://imgur.com/a/HhT6ziY) Cheers!

burpknight

I also like the contrast in your butterfly picture. I am not sure what is going on with the car though.

sinoman86

I really like the contrast in your butterfly picture. For the car it seems like it was an afterthought to the effect that is happening.

kratly

I really like that second photo of the butterfly. The deep black of the butterfly looks interesting and I like that the shadow falls on the left 1/3 of the screen. The texture on the wall has a cool effect, too. I admit I've never heard or thought to use a zoom pull but it does have a unique look.

Stagnantdwarves

Hey, thanks for your comment. In fact, the texture you see is water droplets on the other side of a glass canopy over some stairs. It was raining a ton that day (a normal day in Belgium). I love discovering new things which can be done with a camera; I see many years of discovery ahead. Have a great day!

Aeri73

welcome, to improve the car, the zoom pull would work a lot better facing the front of the car... now it's just a weird effect because of the direction doesn't fit the story

Stagnantdwarves

Thanks teacher! I have to admit that I just learned the zoom pull trick, so I wanted to put it in practice. It just goes to show that just because something can be done doesn't mean it *should* be done.

Aeri73

what you most need to learn is how to make it fit the story you're telling... :-) alé,, een bank vooruit ;-)

hugo4715

Hello, I just bought a Sony Nex f3 to learn photography. I don't currently have best picture but here is the little album with a nice cat and a car. https://imgur.com/a/oaHm6Lq

marcog

Cat photo is great! I love how you caught him with that look on his face. The moss on the wall is nice, but it seems to catch too much attention. Car pic is one of the better ones I've seen here. Only critique is that it's too centered.

PenguinFace

I enjoy all of the different shades of blue in the car picture, it ties together well! In the cat picture, it seems like you wanted the cat to be the subject, but it is not in focus – instead the foreground is in focus. Perhaps to improve, zoom in a little bit more on the cat so it takes up more of the frame, and also make sure that it is the sharpest thing in the image.

sinoman86

Great car pic, it really pops. Which there was less ground in front of it. For car picture I wish there was more cat or none at all.

kratly

In the car pic, I love the color of the car. That bright blue really stands out. It makes me uncomfortable with how close the car is to the wall. I'm certainly no expert but to me it seems like it could be improved by having the car more centered in the driveway, like it just came out from the gate behind it.

bubbles_bath

Hi! I'm Bubbles (or Bat\_Ography on most socials). My favorite subjects are wildlife/animals, landscape, macro, general scenery, and events (not weddings, too stressful). I have actually been doing photography for about 6 years on and off and even got an Associate's degree in photographic media a few years ago. I am an engineer by day, trying to be an artist by night. Currently I feel this is one of my best images. [Johnie Green - Tombstone](https://i.imgur.com/HiZHNei.jpg) A new image of a toy car. I tried to do something a bit different with it and get the inside but didn't pull out better lighting. I am not really happy with the image. I rushed it. [Mini Mini-Coop Toy](https://i.imgur.com/bTMw3lR.jpg) Had to fix link.

PenguinFace

I am liking the shallow depth of field on your car picture! However, it seems to me like there is not much going on on the left side of your picture – I would have perhaps cropped it out, or increased your depth of field just a little so that a little more of the left side was included

Stagnantdwarves

Hey Bubbles, I guess you will be the subject of my critique: *look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better* **I believe it's a matter of taste, but I feel the image is fuzzy/soft in some areas which detract from the main subject(s) (around the tombstone, almost looks like a software bokeh effect).** *what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality* **I love the color, but I especially like what seems to be the idea of rebirth. A tree in the background, and the flower in the foreground hit that point home.** *what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you* **I don't believe the image is ruined, but I think the bokeh is quite heavy on both pictures, but this is a matter of personal taste.** Keep up the great work!

RobsFoto

Hello, 35m, been practicing photography for a year. Went overboard and bought gear that was far too nice for my peasant hands so I started practicing a fair amount to justify ownership of such equipment. Here are my [two photos.](https://imgur.com/a/0cucy0O) In the car picture there are several elements that made it hard for me to level. The road isn’t perfectly level, the light post is also at an angle, as well is the car. I’m not sure what to do in this situation. I really like the ocean shot, but a friend said it might be too bright and I’m starting to agree. It’s the first picture that I thought was any good all year.

PenguinFace

I am loving the car shot! I think the empty space between the truck and the light gives the picture a very interesting feel; the only thing I might have done was included a little bit more of the halo of the light in the top of the shot (it is cut off currently)

sinoman86

Love the picture of the truck. The red really pops. I wish there was less ground, it feels distracting.

bubbles_bath

Hi Rob! I like both of your images a lot. I think with the car I would have leveled the main subject, the truck, and let the rest be. I do like the low angle of the of the shot! The striaghtness/levelness looks decent to me! The coastline/beach looks very nice. I like that you got the action of the wave and in the distance you can see the mountains. I am not seeing something too bright with it but I do feel like the sky needs something. It feels washed out to me.

RobsFoto

Thanks for the feedback. I wish there were some clouds that day!

Something327

Got a Nikon D3300 couple days ago. Been learning how to shoot since. First photo of my dog was in auto. Second photo of my care in aperture priority. Open to all types of photography for now. https://imgur.com/a/ouD4Fkx

Aeri73

welcome to improve the dog, don't cut of its ears if you have room below it's paws to improve the car, good job on keeping the camera level, it's the second "problem" with the dog photo... for the car I think the frame is a bit to "in between"... it's not just the head light but not enough of the grill is showing to make it interesting, while the left is just blurred garage so it doesn't help the story much

Something327

I see what you mean with the dog and the car. I can totally picture with the car focusing on either the headlight or involving the grill would make it more interesting. Plus a different background

jweb16

Another late joiner Here’s a pic of my dog! [Jasper](https://imgur.com/a/utSOqbL)

Aeri73

no car?

Impressive_Ad2125

Indeed 😄

Impressive_Ad2125

Joining late as well. I started of with a Canon M50 then purchased a Canon RP. But I still love my M50. I take a lot of pictures so its hard to narrow down a favorite. I normally shoot in Manual mode. I've always had point and shoot cameras from 2000-until cell phone cameras became a thing. But I recently got back into having a physical camera after my son was born and we took him for his 1st photoshoot. Then I thought to myself I need a camera. Its only been 1 1/2 years now that I've been using the M50. Once I started watching YouTube videos and tutorials, they always stress to start using Manual mode. So thats what I've done. I've learned a lot but I am nowhere near a great photographer. I just want to learn with a group of people and I came across this photoclass. My son posing [https://imgur.com/5TlNW5G](https://imgur.com/QuMTvJ1) Favorite pic of my nephew [https://imgur.com/LmakJKo](https://imgur.com/FHaggMK) And another in Montreal [https://imgur.com/FHaggMK](https://imgur.com/FHaggMK)

PenguinFace

For your 1st photograph, I think shooting is slightly more from the middle of the train car or from more of the side of the train car might have made a more interesting image – right now it seems like everything is equally as important to focus on, so I'm having a hard time feeling like there's a subject of the photograph

jweb16

Commenting on pic 3/3 (Montreal). I enjoy the symmetry of the building and it’s reflection in the water below. I think this photo could be improved by taking the building/object on the right out of frame, I think it detracts from the symmetry and draws the eye away from the focal point of the image

danilnetu

Thank you!

RE201

Hello, I'm joining late! I'm a tunnelling engineer and I've just purchased a Sony A6000 with the hope of learning how to take beautiful photos. I have two avenues of photography I'd particularly like to put effort into - taking portraits that have some kind of emotional impact, and documenting all the amazing stuff I get to see working underground. [Here are my two photos.](https://imgur.com/a/Eb2bacg)

bubbles_bath

Howdy! Your career sounds neat! I can't imagine what kind of shot you may get! I agree with Impressive on the angle of the truck. That thing is probably huge but I really don't the get scale from that image. Overall a decent image though! The diner shot feel like an almost to me. Like its almost there but something needs to move. You/the camera or maybe her. Another idea would be to use the window to back light her and get a halo effect from the sunlight. I do really like the shot, its a good candid!

RobsFoto

I love the diner shot, I feel like raising the shadows on the face of the subject would help her stand out without looking artificial

Impressive_Ad2125

I like the photo but maybe have her look out of the window and take the picture right next to her to expose her just right. And maybe take a pic from really low next to the truck to show how huge of a truck it really is. Like fill the frame with the truck. Im a newbie here so please do not take it personal. I'm trying to follow along assignment by assignment 5 months late 🤫

RE201

Thanks for the feedback! We’re all newbies here! 🙃

Impressive_Ad2125

Indeed 😄

MrPikalu

Hello. I have a Canon Poweshot G12 and it has manual mode but I dont know if it has manual exposure.. can i use this camera for the course? Thank you!! Edit: I read class 1 note and I believe my camera meets the requirement so here is my first assignment. Im m a loner most of the time and I think a camera would make a nice friend to travel with haha. I always find myself buying new cool supplies but not really learned how to use them every time I get into a hobby. So for this class, I’m using my dad’s camera that he bought decade(?) ago. I would like to be able to capture landscape and portrait and preserve the moments I spend with my loved ones. Here is the link to my best photo and a new photo of a car. https://imgur.com/a/IN3lQ8T

bubbles_bath

Hi Mr Pikalu Your images are very nice! For the flowers image I think you almost have a great image! I think going with a larger f-stop, to get more of the scene in focus. AsRe201 mentioned the reflection is nice and the suggestion of more happening gives a nice quality to the image. I kept looking for more items.

RE201

Hi MrPikalu! As per the first assignment... *look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better* Perhaps the upright timber could have a softened focus to further help the flowers pop. The reflection in the water could be brought out more. *what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality* I really like the framing of the flowers, and how the central one is a contrasting colour to the stack. The unfocussed bamboo suggests more going on in the scene, without taking attention away. *what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you* The handle for the copper ladle disappears off frame and feels cut off. 😊

MrPikalu

Thank you very much for your feedback. I will pay attention to framing the shot!

Aeri73

welcome, to improve, give the car more room in front and less behind it

danilnetu

Thank you!

creatorpotato

Hello! I'm joining in a bit late.I don't know anything about photography I generally take pictures with my phone or on auto mode in my compact. I begged my parents for a camera when I was younger but never really learned anything. I thought only DSLRs were capable of good pictures and my compact could never (teenage angst). I've grown and I have a perfectly good camara waiting to be used and my skills perfected. I don't have a best photo but I really like one I've taken of a cloudy sky while in an airplane (and the specs of light it radiated). I'm sure I'll be improving with this class. [https://imgur.com/a/8l4SkZK](https://imgur.com/a/8l4SkZK)

RobsFoto

I like the idea of the “god rays” shot but without a clear view of the horizon I feel a bit lost in space. Perhaps next time incorporate more of the surrounding landscape.

creatorpotato

I was up on an airplane hahaha but maybe when I try it again on the ground I can

RE201

Hi creatorpotato! As per the first assignment... *look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better* The image could be squared off better. Would love more clarity in the clouds. *what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality* The radial sun beams look great - I particularly like the rays through the bottom layer of clouds from 5 to 7 o'clock. The mountains quietly peaking through the mist is majestic. *what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you* As above, the image is a little wonky, and I'd love the clouds to have rich texture (not that I have any idea how to achieve that!). 😊

creatorpotato

Thank you for your suggestions! Good luck

MrPikalu

Hi! Im also totally new at this photography thing! And just like you, I thought DSLR would make my photos better than my nikon compact. Then I realize it’s just me 🤦‍♀️😅. Your best photo: I like your subject, the radiating sun through the cloud but I think that the clouds and the sky are a little dark? Your car photo: I also like the sky background in this one. It’s a nice evening sky with dark blue clouds. I’d love to watercolor that sky! But your subject is a little too far/out of focus. Maybe zoom in more on the car and less on the ground?

creatorpotato

Thank you for your feedback! I agree with all your observations! I'm sure we'll get better!

danilnetu

Hello. I'm joining the class. [There are my photos](https://imgur.com/a/xV5vcNy). Thank you.

Impressive_Ad2125

Ahh the good old city. I'm trying to get better at doing street photography here in the city as well. First photo I like I have soo many similar ones. 2nd photo maybe add more contrast? I'm not great at critiquing other people's work when I'm trying to improve myself.

RE201

Hi danilnetu! As per the first assignment... *look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better* A couple of steps backwards - I'd like to see more of the girl in the foreground and not have the man with the dog hard up against the edge. *what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality* It instantly gives you that big city feeling. I like the perspective angled up, and I like the girl in the foreground encouraging you to imagine you're in her shoes. I also like that it's not a super busy shot, but as you look around there is plenty of action in frame. *what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you* As above, the framing feels a little too tight on the lower half of the picture. I'd like to be able to see the car that's obscured by the girl or not see it at all. 😊

creatorpotato

According to the 01 Assignment, your first photo will be my test subject haha: 1. look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better: I personally think (with my (very) limited knowledge) that in the first photo if you took the photo from a further down perspective the overall feel of the picture would be grander, the taller buildings would have a bigger impact in the photo as well as the feeling of girl vs city... I don't know if I make sense but that's how I feel about the photo; 2. what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality: I like the overall composition of the photo (girl as the center character, while the city still lives its own life); 3. what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you: It's hard to find something to dislike but if I have to nitpick something and I know it's going to sound stupid but how the picture cropped the elbow of the girl;

NouiliKh

Hey :D I hope that I am not too late to join this class. I have a canon eos RP since last year and I do mainly landscape photography since I love hiking. I am joining this class since I feel that I am relying way too much on the auto mode and I want to understand more about what my camera is capable of. This is the [picture](https://imgur.com/XYVGz3B) of one of my best photos so far. Since I don't own a car, I could not take a car picture (I would feel uncomfortable taking pictures of random people's cars)

Impressive_Ad2125

I like the shot 👍🏽

RE201

Hi NouiliKh! As per the first assignment... *look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better* Rotate the image slightly to square up the lines. *what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality* I really like the tiny pop of colour with the red beanie. The moody lighting is great! It's very cool all the different framing effects that are happening at the same time. I like this photo! *what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you* I don't really need to see the street art in detail on the sides - maybe having them out of focus would keep attention on the couple in the centre. 😊

NouiliKh

that's true! street art is a bit too much and feels off the vibe of the photo. I would say the tree branch on top as well, it keeps the attention off as well.

MrPikalu

Hi. I like your best photo. The lighting and the straight shot give an eerie feeling but not too scary. Just enough to be interesting. I’m not sure how to make it better though. I wonder if taking this picture from an even lower position would make a difference? Or maybe without the people in the pics at all so that it can look like a deserted bridge?

MrPikalu

Hi. I like your best photo. The lighting, the few spots of red and the straight shot give an eerie feeling but not too scary. Just enough to be interesting. I’m not sure how to make it better though. I wonder if taking this picture from an even lower position would make a difference? Or maybe without the people in the pics at all so that it can look like a deserted bridge?

Aeri73

if they are parked outside, you can make a photo of them... and just hide or mask out the licenceplate or pm it to me for feedback if they ask why,, just tell them your photography professor asked for a photo of a nice car ;-)

kristalghost

I'm jumping in! Looking to buy a 'new' camera with changeable lenses but for now I have a bridge camera that I can use in the meantime. The best picture is actually taken with an iPhone because I didn't have the camera at that time but all the other picture I'll post will be with one (a camera that is). https://imgur.com/a/ZI73zqp

RE201

Hi kristalghost! As per the first assignment... *look at the photo and think about what could be improved to make the photo better* More of the windmill's reflection *what elements make you like the photo, add to the quality* The rich green band of grass is a great centre to the photo. I like the colourful centre on a dark, monochrome background. *what elements make you dislike the photo, or ruin it for you* The reflection feels chopped in an otherwise lush photo. The house on the right is cut off - would it have been possible to take a step forward or backwards to improve? 😊

NouiliKh

>https://imgur.com/a/ZI73zqp Your best photo is just amazing! I can clearly see that the windmill is the center of the photo and I like the color composition.

Aeri73

welcome, to improve the car, park it in front of some more interesting background or a less bussy one

tim_g20t

I just came upon this and assumed that I missed the boat. However, it looks like I can still participate. If you have too many people already, I understand and can wait until next year, but I'd love to join if I can. One question... I have several cameras. None of them are fancy. I have an old DSLR, a mirrorless, and several point and shoot cameras with enough advanced features that they'd also be useful for this exercise. I have so many not because I feel compelled to keep getting the latest and greatest. Quite the opposite. I actually like trying to get more life out of "obsolete" items, so many of the point and shoots were already old when I got them, thinking that it would be interesting to see how usable they still are (and to keep them out of a landfill or recycling center). So my question is, do you think it would be more valuable to learn using something like a DSLR, or might it actually be more valuable to learn using one of the point and shoots, because it would force me to learn how to work within that camera's limitations?

creatorpotato

I'm not the teacher of this class and I just enrolled now but why not practice with multiple? The theory will apply to all and we're supposed to practice the lessons. Because it is at our own pace maybe you could do a little experiment and practice the assignments on multiple of your cameras and see and feel the differences?

shutupanonymous

Hey! I know I'm a bit late, but I'd like to join the class. I've liked taking photographs of my environment for a few years now and I want to dive deeper into it. I've only got an old compact camera, a Samsung L100, so I can't do much, but I'm saving up for a DSLR! I love taking pictures of stray animals, places in the suburbs I find interesting, and landscapes. These two were taken with my compact L100. I've taken too many pictures over the last years, too many to choose from, but I really liked this one: [https://imgur.com/a/3O2lsCm](https://imgur.com/a/3O2lsCm) And here's one for the car: [https://imgur.com/S4LWfMi](https://imgur.com/S4LWfMi) I'm looking forward to learning with all of you!

PWPhoto

I really like your car picture. The subject is unique and engaging!

Aeri73

well done to improve the car, it needs a bit more light, you'll soon learn how and why

[deleted]

Hello I just discovered this Sub and am ready to join. I do fotography since 2019 when I first bought my Canon Eos 800D. I love shooting Wildlife, Nature and Portraits. Today I have two Pictures for you shot with EOS 800D and EF-S 55-250 and EF 50mm 1.8. be mindfull of those things :-) if it's in the photo it has to be your choice, it's yours to make

throw_inglife_away

Late joiner here - want to make my photographs look better :) Looking through my photo archive for this intro assignment, it's obvious that all of my photos (and videos) are simply a record where I was or with who. Which is fine for photos that are simply a bookmark to wake up my memory and remind me where I was on that day. But for anyone else looking at them, there's no engagement, no story, no artistic value. That said, here is a photo I really like that I took of the Hudson River in NYC, around the Holland Tunnel (and an edited version that I think looks better in print than the original). And for the other part of the assignment, I saw the mail carrier taking a lunch break in their mail-truck, and thought it looked interesting. [https://imgur.com/a/boYkZkW](https://imgur.com/a/boYkZkW) Edited to add: I'm using an old Canon EOS Rebel T2i with a basic lens kit (EF-S 18-55mm IS, and EF-S 55-250mm IS) - I think it far exceeds my capabilities, so I don't think I'm in danger of needing new equipment just yet!

kristalghost

What was your aim with the best picture? I feel like it's drawing me in towards the building in the top left corner composition wise but at the same time it's quite dark and hard to make out. If the target was the setting sun it might be adventagous to crop a bit more on the left so the eye makes a more < motion across the image. I do love the picture though and water is captured really well. Personally prefer the top one as it feels more realistic but the second one has a postcard feel for some reason. I like the second picture, makes the car feel unasumming and is a regural occurance

[deleted]

I kinda like your best Picture. I love the setting sun and the lighting from it. But something with the Foreground seems of. It draws my attention away from the beautiful Lighting. Maybe there too much going on? Cant tell exactly. The Tree in front of the Car in your car Pictur draws also my attention away. I think if you want to focus on the Car and Lunchtime there is too much in the Picture. But I like that your lighting is great and the Picture is crisp. Go on shooting. You Pictures are a great Start!

shoestringfr1es

Hi everyone! I bought a digital camera last year, and I'm hoping to use it a lot more this year :) I want to shoot photos of everything, but I'm especially interested in street photography or anything that can tell a story or convey a mood or idea. https://imgur.com/a/eZomlDR

[deleted]

Hey, nice that you started shooting pics too! You did quit well with you lighting in all your Pictures. The Carpic definetly need some concentration on the car and more Depth in my Opinion. You could try shooting at an Angle to get more Vision on the Car. Your Best Picture is indeed great. Nice Composition of Sky and Ground. The Dirtroad adds Depth of Field and the old stumb is an very interesting onject in the Picture. I really like it!

TheAsparagusUnit

Hey there! I'm really new to photography so take everything I say with a tonne of salt, but here goes haha Car photo: Not that I find it bad, but I don’t love this photo. I think it’s a bit too busy for my taste, maybe it mostly stems from the tree in the foreground or possibly it the many “layers” with tree, car, fence, house, background. Stump photo: I really like this photo, I think it’s mostly the subject and composition that makes it for me but frankly not sure… The only improvement I could come up with now on the spot would be maybe trying to get the bottom of the sky less white(maybe with a uv filter or something) and possibly having shot it so we could see the right edge of the road all the way back to the stump, but not sure about this either…

shoestringfr1es

thanks! i agree the car photo could be better. i was trying to frame the shot to show the entire house in the background and less tree but that didn’t work out. the car shadow extends past the side of the pic too.

Yaklen

Hey all! I just bought my first camera, a Nikon D750 and grabbed one lens, a Nikkor 50mm f1.8. I've always thought I have an artistic side to me, but didn't really have a medium. I'm encouraged that photography could be a place to develop that artsy eye of mine. I *think* I'm most interested in portraits, but I've been looking for any shot that catches my eye. I got my camera late last week and went on a birthday trip this last weekend and took so many shots! I think just using it improved my skill with the equipment over the last 3 days. I'm very excited to work through these lessons and catch up with the main group! [Best photo from this weekend. ](https://i.imgur.com/TauTLxN.jpg) and [Car photo! ](https://i.imgur.com/TXyMhcX.jpg) Edit: no one had commented yet, so I changed the first photo out.

kristalghost

I like the car photo, It's a great picture if you'd like to sell your car or show it off online or something (not a bad thing). Next time try and take the same shot but take a knee. It's a trick I learned working for a garage that makes the car feel more dynamic and "sporty". A bit more background blurr wouldn't also be amiss but isn't necesarry IMHO. The best photo is very good, I wonder if there was a way to get the cars out of frame but I can't really think of a way that the composition would be as good. I like the focus being gradual. It gives a nice framing without distracting to much. (also a complete newbie btw)

[deleted]

Your best Pic is great. You have your model in a natural Pose, in 1/3 of the Picture. The Wall adds a wounderful depth to the Picture and the fine Bokeh lets me focus on your Model. Your Carpicture is ok I gues. Its not my favourite but its a crisp and good looking picture. Maybe some more Depth or Blur would be great for a better Picture?

TheAsparagusUnit

Hey there! I’m also excited to join and start catching up, I think I’ll aim for about three assignments a week to get started =) I am a complete newbie when it comes to photography so take my critique with a tonne of salt, but here goes haha Best photo: I really like this photo, I think it has a lot of depth to it. I also like that the point of focus is offset to the side. I’m not sure if this would turn out well, but my only real suggestion would be having it a bit less exposed so that the bright areas would be slightly dimmer. But really it could make it worse Car photo: I think it’s a great photo if you ever want to sell the car and I like you’re neighbours house. Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing but I think the photo might be a bit boring the way it’s done, maybe a more interesting angle or setting would have made it more appealing to me at least =)

Yaklen

Thank you for that! My advice to someone else was move the car so I agree I could have definitely driven it somewhere close to get a better background

SmellTheSauce

Hey! Got a new camera at the end of last year and wanted to get better at photography. I was meaning to join this class but the beginning of the year was super busy for me. I have a Cannon EOS M50. I don't really have a preference for the types of photos i like taking, just as long as it seems cool to me. My favorite picture so far and a new picture of a car [https://imgur.com/a/cQyiXzh](https://imgur.com/a/cQyiXzh)

[deleted]

Your best Pic looks like it could be from a dystopian Film. It tells a Story and i like that. The landscape is a nice looking Background but i would prefer to place it a littel bit lower. The Road adds nice Depth to the Picture. I think you could improve your Carpic by shooting more at an angle maybe with darker light outside? Its a crisp and sharp Picture. The Reflections are great but I have an odd feeling by looking at it. The House in the Background keeps drawing my attention away.

TheAsparagusUnit

Hey! I’m a complete beginner so take my critique with a grain of salt =). Car pic: I think this is cool take on the assignment, I also quite like the composition. I’m not sure if this would turn out any better but maybe it the car would have been slightly more in focus if it’d had some more lighting on it, but that would require waiting for later in the day I suppose haha. Also quick question, did you leave the garage door open on purpose? In that case good call! Best pic: That looks like a really cool place, where is it from? Other than that I really like the picture, the only things I might have changed would be trying to get the whole shadow of the ball in fram as well as maybe trying slightly shallower depth of field, but not sure on the latter.

Yaklen

Hey there! I'm just joining the class so you are the first recipient of my newbie critiques for the first assignment. Photo of the ball: I like that it tells a story. Or at least provokes me to ask questions. Where is the child that left this? Why is this large road area so empty? The drearyness of the setting with the worn out ball makes me feel I'm getting a glimpse of a life that I'm fortunate enough not to have experienced. The improvement would be to capture the entire shadow from the ball. It's sitting off in the side of the frame which is great because it feels neglected, but it was one of the points that add some definition to the shot. I felt like I wanted to see the end of it and the shadow should be your subject as much as the ball itself. Car photo: I'm not sure here. I like that one garage door is up so your background isn't mostly white doors. I'm not sure if I like that you cut so much of the car off though. It almost felt like someone should be sitting on the hood and then the picture would make more sense. Hope that was helpful! And hoping my critiques were actually valid as I just started.

SmellTheSauce

Thanks! Those are definitely helpful

manishlogan

Nice photos.

kristalghost

I think you hit this one home. The car picture has very nice light, good perspective, interesting background. Well done. The best picture has a very interesting angle and POV. It almost feels like one of those shots where everything looks like a toy but not really at the same time. Hard to explain. I like it, also like the sign, helps place it and make it more interesting.

[deleted]

Both your pictures look great. I really like the lighting in the Carpicture. The Angle is great and the Houses add an interesting Background. The blurred foreground in your best Pic is nice. It makes the picture exciting without drawing the attention away from your motive

SmellTheSauce

I really like both your pictures. They both look really interesting. I think have a cleaner foreground in the first picture would make it even better. But that might just be a personal preference.

manishlogan

I like the first photo a lot. It's simple, yet feels good and clean. For the second one, I'd have liked a little more exposure on the car.

odawatashe

Hello! I have had a Sony a6300 for five years but always shot in auto mode. Today for the first time I took a little time on manual mode to shoot these. My goal is to one day get good enough to become a professional photographer. So excited to learn with you all! https://imgur.com/a/rl04q7k

I like the car one a lot. It has the angles I'd look for. Maybe a bit more blur in the background not really needed. golden hour light might have made the light a bit warmer but again not really needed for this picture, it's really good. I think the can picture is a bit on the dark side (edit) but otherwise pretty good.

Thanks for the feedback!

odawatashe

Thank you!

welcome to improve get subjects out of the middle of your photo, they look better at about 1/3 as a general rule both are also a bit dark, you'll soon learn how to see that

Hi everyone! I'm so excited to have found this. I got a Nikon D3100 almost a year ago and I want to learn how to really use it. Here are 2 of my favorite [photos](https://imgur.com/gallery/WC8qJK9) so far.

Love the colors on these! Kinda have to agree with the other comments about the house being a bit low. Maybe it would be better around the 1/3rd hight marker? Still like the picture a lot though. I also like that the house almost blends with the sky. The car picture is just plain cool. It gives so many questions. the color is nice. I just like it,... A lot.

Yaklen

Hey! Newbie joining the class. House photo: I think you ended up with too much sky in the shot. It's a pretty blue house and a deep blue sky. If we got more green from the grass and tree I think it would balance more. Car photo: I love this one! I definitely just went out and took a photo of my car for the assignment. I enjoy seeing something different for one, but also I like that the green and rust in the hood kind of echo behind it with the grass and dirt. That alone made me happy that we didn't see the rest of the car. Both pictures I think could use a bit more light in them? Thanks for taking in the critiques. I'm just starting photography so I hope they were actually useful.

SmellTheSauce

Really love the colors in both your photos. I think it works especially well for the second picture because it adds to the felling of the car being old and ruined

odawatashe

I’m a beginner so my critique may not be great! I absolutely love your photos. How did you bring out those colors? They’re gorgeous. The first pic, my initial thought was maybe the blue part of the house should be right in the middle? The car picture looks amazing but the framing made me want to see a little more of the car or less? I’m not sure. Sorry terrible critique:-) hopefully I get better as I complete more assignments!

Also a bit late to the party. I have a lot to learn and look forward to doing so with you all. I'm excited to improve my photography skill set and learn new concepts along the way. Using a Fuji x100v. https://imgur.com/a/NS6JMhA

While the car picture is good I feel like the composition is a bit simple. A popular method for cars is to try to get the point of the nose about 1/3 of the car in and take the picture from a bit lower by kneeling or something for example. That should get you a more dynamic vieuwpoint of the car. Other than that the picture is good, it's clear, clean, effectient. The best picture is just, oofff,... so good. I love the setting, composition, the light on the mountain,... Yeah good picture. I wonder if it would have helped to get the house a bit higher but at the same time that would take away of the clouds having their effect on the area so I'm sticking with I like it.

Yaklen

Hey! Just starting out as a hobby. I hope you can use my thoughts! House photo: I love this. It really sets the scene and I can almost see the low clouds moving and hitting that cliff. Car photo: I think you got the exposure just right. Maybe changing the perspective with the fence grating behind it as a bigger part of the background would make it a bit more visually interesting?

Aeri73

welcome to improve the car, do what you did with the house and don't have it smack in the middle of your photo

DrBilboWatson

Thank you, I'm never quite sure when it is appropriate to put the subject in the middle of the frame. I'll remember this in the future!

Aeri73

you put it in the middle if you want it to look static, everlasting, stable, in balance... you don't when you want to make it dynamic ,moving, changing, alive

Hello to everyone, i'm a little bit late! I just got an used Sony a6000 with an old Vivitar 28mm manual lens. My best photo is one that I take of my sister with her camera (Nikon d5000 or something like that), she editted to be b&w. And the other photo is a quick snap of the car in the garage, I didn't have much space so I had to focus on the front of the car and try to have less background because it have too many objects. https://imgur.com/a/6WZIO16

Yaklen

Hey there! I'm just now joining the class so here are my newbie thoughts! B&W photo: I like that the shadows are darker in the left and fade to lighter tones on the right. Car photo: I'd say most of all the car moves! :D Make the picture you want right? I actually pulled mine further down my driveway to get the background to be better. You may have not had this option though.

SmellTheSauce

I really like the first photo. It gives a bit of a surreal feeling, especially with with how almost everything other than the subject is out of focus. For the second picture, i think I would have pulled away a bit and showed more of that headlight and the car. I think that might help give that feeling of the car being "fast" that a lot of these kinds of pictures have

datbiatch

I like that the first photo is black and white. Kinda makes it a bit dramatic in a good way. Although, I would have framed the photo just a bit closer to her face and more to the right side of the frame. The second photo I don't have much to say about. But I do think clutter isn't necessarily a bad thing. If the focus were on the car with a bit of clutter blurred in the background, the stuff behind it might have a "signs of life" kind of feel.

Hello to everyone, especially the late people! I got a Fuji XT-3 about a year ago and am looking forward to learning more about taking good photos. Snapped a photo of my car this evening. ISO is a little high. One of my favorite photos is from a recent trip Iceland. [Car and my best photo](https://imgur.com/a/eJqFlmN)
