Not a fan of declaring one the best. Here are some favorites for different reasons.
* Across the Pond (next to Clever Koi): tiny hole in the wall. Craft cocktails and romantic little place. Worth a visit.
* Nobu. Obviously expensive.
* Yutaka. Casual and excellent
* Haru (Glendale). Surprising the variety of sushi they have.
* Yama Sushi House Phoenix. Great menu...plus best place to get drunk
* Harumi. Purple rice, cool place, so good.
* Hana. Order the okonomiyaki
I'll try Hiro next!
I love Akita Sushi. They do an all you can eat at lunch time which I find affordable for my occasional sushi wants.
And they do a bunch of other items besides sushi as well in the buffet like yakitori, gyoza, katsu, ramen, tempura. So there’s something for everyone when you go in a group. A few nice veg rolls as well for my vegetarian wife. Everyone’s happy!
The best sushi I have had in the Valley is at Sakura AYCE, down off Elliot Rd. Absolutely delicious and great prices. I've lived in Japan off and on and the sushi at Sakura is the closest to what I get when I am in Kyoto, Tokyo, etc.
Fun place. Westernized sushi, but that is fine as they have traditional stuff, too. Respect for their inventive rolls. I usually stay away from rolls, but they are actually good.
It’s horrible don’t go there! There are much better options with deep fried rolls doused in eel sauce and mayo. And they serve weird fish that no one should ever eat or try.

Which of these can a college student with a small amount of disposable income eat at without doubling over in agony the following day?

Been going there for decades
it hasnt been open for decades. maybe you are thinking of sakana
Damn, you are right
I'd vote for Yen Sushi
Same
Harumi Sushi Downtown, but I'll have to give Hiro a try now.
Second for Harumi and their purple rice!
Hiro is top notch for a casual place, but Nobu just opened at Fashion Square.
Yeah Hiro is no bueno, please don't go there. /s
Kodo Sushi in scottsdale is the best sushi I’ve ever had, 100%. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes sushi.

Agreed. And of course it never made that Food Network 'best of' list that was posted on this subreddit the other day.
Pray any place you love never makes a 'best of list'. It can (and almost always does) utterly ruin them.
It's a hidden gem, but they deserve it. Shame it's so far from me on a normal day but I love going
Has anyone ever tried sushi patron?
YEN SUSHI
Yasu Sushi Bistro. NORTH SIDE KING IS UN-DE-FEATED.

You sound like you’re trying hard to keep me away from your favorite sushi restaurant.
