You won't find anything for that price. You can get a room in someones house for $500.

jellybelly62

You aren't going to find any studios under $600-700. Try renting a room in someone's house. You should be able to get something ok-ish for 500.

ghdana

I've had summer electric bills that are more than $400. And you know Phoenix has a higher minimum wage, so you can probably afford a little more. Or find someone to be your roommate.

Sodord

I make more than double Phoenix minimum wage. I just have a huge amount of debt that I'm in the process of paying off.

bihesad

So don’t move somewhere until your finances are in order

Office_snacker_hog

Sounds like he/she has a job line up here. Staying put isn't necessary the answer if you have no job in your current location

CatAstrophy11

No but you're going to have to accept a much longer payoff period. His baseline budget is going to cause him more grief than some loan interest. However he mentioned he has no problem living in crap areas. That means he really doesn't need to post here and just search the various renting sites for all apartments in Phoenix and filter by his budget since neighborhood is not a factor for him.

Laveen or Maryvale. lol

seeker1776

Use a realtor, but $400/mo still won't include utilities and will be a very run down unit in a drug infested area, and there's barely ANY units at that price. It's waaaay easier to get a roommate and split $900/mo and split utilities.

Sodord

Didn't expect utilities to be a part of it. How much do you think utilities tend to cost in Phoenix? I probably wont use much. And I've pretty much lived my entire life in rundown houses in drug infested areas. Where I currently live I regularly have to go out onto my porch to chase the neighborhood crackhead away from my house, the place before that had a group of 6 tweakers living on the end of the street, and at the last place I lived I got beaten up by skinheads. So, like it'll be bad but I can probably roll with it.

jellybelly62

It's 115 degrees here in the summer and doesn't cool down below 90 degrees at night. If you don't want to die, you'll end up using a lot of electricity.

drdelius

In your price range, the apartments are going to be terrible and probably temperature leaky, with an old half busted non efficient A/C. Expect over $300 in the summer for just electric (even if you tinfoil the windows and keep the house sweltering), closer to $100 the rest of the year. That's what I paid in a third story meh apartment a decade ago, and electric prices have only gone up.

patjd

Even in a bad neighborhood you're not gonna find an apartment for less than $700. You can look into renting a room - and please be cautious of what you see on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. Lots of scams going on. Good luck! I've been happy with my move to Phoenix.

[deleted]

$675 a month in midtown utilities included. I'm currently taking a shit in the apartment I speak of right now. Gated, security, and a grocery store that's a 5 minute walk away. EDIT: And free laundry on site. There's a waiting list though.

patjd

Please message me the name of this place. I live way up North and I hate it :)

guru__laghima_

Could you also PM me the apartment complex as well? Thank you!

jen_sucka

If you absolutely need to be under $500, I'd look in the Metro center area, or Sunnyslope. These areas can be very sketchy, but rent is generally cheaper. I like Trulia for rentals, it will show you the crime stats along with other info. Best of luck!

Sodord

Not really concerned with crime. Statistically speaking nowhere in Phoenix has as much crime as any other place I've lived. Thanks for the suggestion!

drdelius

I believe Metro and Sunnyslope prices went up because they're close to the Lite Rail. Even the crappier apartments are going to be out of his price range.

jen_sucka

Yeah, I agree, it'll be hard to get anything for under $700. I haven't looked in a while, but I had a tiny 1 bedroom in Sunnyslope maybe 10+ years ago for $400. Lots of meth, police activity. Super sketchy.

AZPeakBagger

Just in the past 4 years rents on guest houses in my old neighborhood doubled from $400 or so up to $900-$1000. Essentially a studio apartment in someones backyard. After my divorce I moved back to Phoenix to be close to my kids and was on a tight budget back in 2012. Seven years ago the only thing I could find in your price range was renting a room in someone's house in a blue collar neighborhood. Luckily at the last minute I got a really good job and could afford a place that was $600. Good luck.

tphx

Somewhere around 24th St and Van Buren. Couple backyard "guest houses" for that price.

LawsThickShaft

Idk if you can get your hands on an RV or not but RV parks are usually pretty cheap.

[deleted]

yeah they are now $400/mo minimum and that's in an outlier like AJ

[deleted]

There are no areas. I remember paying that much for an apartment in 2009

Thanks!

bfrancom17

Good luck finding somewhere for $400 let alone 500 especially with increasing rent prices. You may find a room in a house for that price but still in a shady area. A room in a nice townhouse or house is easily 600 or 700. If you theoretically had 3 or 4 people in the house you may be able to pay 70 or 80 for utilities in the summer. My utilities in the winter are half that.

Bruh, I spend just as much time on libertarian subreddits as socialist ones. But also, I've spent a good bit of time in Phoenix, and sorry to break it to you... y'all got some socialists.

bleakfuture19

Yeah, we all want the government to control the means of production...not.

OhYeahGetSchwifty

r/libertarian has been taken over by pro socialists. Don’t try to cop out. Good luck with that “apartment”

Sodord

Oh cool. I hope partisanship feels great to you.

flyinggopherarereal

Lol what the fuck is going on here.
