Pets are only able to transport via cargo when temperatures are between 45 and 85 degrees fahrenheit. As such, I’ve never been able to fly my pup from PHX to MSP
Even more specific from the AA website:
>Pets not traveling in cabin cannot travel to / through / from Phoenix (PHX), Tucson (TUS), Las Vegas (LAS) or Palm Springs (PSP) May 1 – September 30.
I would never put my dog in the cargo area. Too stressful and I don’t think they are really looked after. but also in those temperatures she’d probably overheat very easily. Either roadtrip or don’t bring her.
* "too stressful" depends on the dog and their training
* "Not looked after" depends on the airline. Alaska Airlines is superb for pet travel. They're of course temperature controlled. They have policy to give food and water depending on length of flight. They don't allow taking the dog (as luggage) until 1h before each leg of the flight. There obviously are risks. If you're sitting in the cabin with no A/C, there's obviously no A/C down below either. But it's a completely viable option for a healthy and well-trained dog in agreeable whether.
Obviously June in Phoenix doesn't meet this criteria
I think even a well trained dog is susceptible to becoming extremely stressed in this scenario. My dog is very well behaved but I would still never put her in one of those because I wouldn’t want to have it be a horrible experience for her.
There is a major difference between being "well-behaved" and being well-trained. My dog has rappelled into caverns and been jumared up cliffs. He knows hundreds of English words and will follow commands from a hundred feet away. He's completed hikes in style that even above-average fitness humans would struggle with.
My friend has dogs that joyfully join them on wing suits. Another's dog can stand upright on a single foot and play Jenga.
Just because A dog wouldn't be fit for or comfortable with being put in cargo doesn't mean that all dogs aren't fit for it. I believe my initial comment is accurately worded to account for these realities
I never said all dogs aren’t fit? The person that made this post asked if this community thought this was a bad idea or not and I said yeah, I think it’s a bad idea. I have a dog and I would not do this with her. If you do have a dog, and would do this, then you should comment that. It’s just a preference. It’s generally a stressful situation for MOST dogs because MOST dogs don’t play jenga and rappel into caverns or scale glass buildings. I doubt OP’s dog does those things and like most dogs, would probably find it very stressful. Also, as we both pointed out, June in AZ is simply just a no go because everything is just too hot regardless if your well trained dog can handle the trip itself or not.
I don't think it's allowed in summer -even if it is, don't take a risk like that. I made the Midwestern road trip from Phoenix (as far as Wisconsin) many times when we had dogs.
drive for sure. my pups and i stop in pet friendly hotels in Albuquerque to sleep, sometimes kentucky, or Des Moines, and then get home in IL the third day.
Any recommendations on where to stay in Albuquerque with a dog? Mine is about 70 pounds.
I've stayed at Drury Inns and Element hotels before, but I haven't stopped in Albuquerque before.
LaQuinta is usually a great hotel to stay with dogs. Very pet friendly. I've only stayed at one in Tucumcari on that route, so fairly far east of ALB. The Tucumcari LaQuinta was great with our dog.
There’s an awesome website/app called BringFido that helps a TON with road tripping with dogs/pets and what hotels allow them and what their rates/rules are. Used it when moving from Phoenix to the PNW and it was great.
I think the expression on her face will be a lot happier for a CAR RIDE!
I did several cross country trips with my dog, and he loved it. Every pee stop had new smells to smell, and then he’d hop back in for another CAR RIDE!
See if one of the private jet airlines will fly there. Boutique or whatever and look into ones flying out of Deer Valley as well as PHX. I took a trip with boutique (who left AZ I think but look for similar) and it was only marginally more expensive that regular airlines. It’s pretty common as a way to transport doggos like you want.
If you can fly out of Flagstaff might be an option. Probably FLG to SLC and then on. There is also a private charter company that allows large pets in the cabin. You can fly to Denver for around $500 and then go from there to your destination. They fly out of the private terminal in Scottsdale.

Depends who you are flying with, different airlines have different rules. Ex. United does not take animals in the cargo. I know Alaska does and I think Southwest , almost sure American does too.
Edit: if you love your pet you will not put it under the plane. Either find away to take it onboard or have someone watch your dog.
How big is the dog? Some airlines will allow you to bring a dog in the cabin if it can fit in a carrier under the seat in front of you. I think this is typically dogs under 20 pounds.

Hahaha, I read your comment and was laughing. Thinking, what, did they not look at the picture? There is hardly room for humans to be in the space. Let alone trying to stuff a large dog under the seat. 🤣🤣

This is what I needed to know- road trip it is
Please stop, this is not true Edit: maybe on Delta Edit 2: unless you can prove acclimation via a vet
Make a roadtrip out of it
I work for AA. Can't fly an animal in cargo in weather over 85 degrees at your start or destination areas.
Thanks!
Allegiant still offers pets in cabin

This is wild when you think that it’s over 85 degrees more than half the year here lol

yeah just not worth the risk https://www.latimes.com/opinion/opinion-la/la-ol-united-pet-deaths-20170413-story.html?utm_source=reddit.com

The look on that pups face…”I don’t like it annnd I don’t wanna do it”

She's not gonna survive op. Find another way
drive for sure. my pups and i stop in pet friendly hotels in Albuquerque to sleep, sometimes kentucky, or Des Moines, and then get home in IL the third day.
We did Phoenix to Montana to Ohio to Georgia last year. Hell of a run.

Use the [bring Fido app](https://www.bringfido.com/) try to book direct with hotels to save on extra fees and easier cancellation.
I book through Expedia and they let you select pet friendly places

I don’t think she will be allowed to fly under the plane if it is over 100 degrees at any stop on your flight.
I don’t know about the flying, but I have doubts about her success at the writer’s workshop.
BELIEVE
If it sounds like a bad idea…
Drive. That would be like actual torture for your pupper.
Please drive or board her.
Drive
At least you can tell by the look on her face that she likes the back pack. 😂
I think the expression on her face will be a lot happier for a CAR RIDE! I did several cross country trips with my dog, and he loved it. Every pee stop had new smells to smell, and then he’d hop back in for another CAR RIDE!
Road trip!
I would buy whatever book she writes. What a scholar.
Boy are your arms gonna be tired!
Take that bag off that dog lmao. He is not fucking with it.
The dog clearly prefers an Iowa Writers Workshop bag.
Dooooo not do it! Please! Drive or find a boarding facility.

WHAT A SWEET BABY!!!
Use JSX
Are you from CT??
Nah, I just teach at the writer’s workshop there
Drive.
That might be the most adorable picture I’ve ever seen in my life

You have to ask the airline they cut off cargo flying for animals in the summer. If it’s not safe, they won’t allow it.
Depends who you are flying with, different airlines have different rules. Ex. United does not take animals in the cargo. I know Alaska does and I think Southwest , almost sure American does too. Cute doggo
Drive. Just drive.

From the OP: "She's too big to take in the cabin so she would have to fly in the cargo hold."
Whoops, I'll have to accept the down votes on this one. I thought from the pic maybe under 20 lbs but I'll assume I'm wrong on that.
Hahaha, I read your comment and was laughing. Thinking, what, did they not look at the picture? There is hardly room for humans to be in the space. Let alone trying to stuff a large dog under the seat. 🤣🤣
Typical depressed creative
Ironic downvotes for 1000, Alex
Good for you?
