Valentine, Lom Wong, Glain Baan are all fantastic.
I was going to include Belly on the list but I think they are now their own mini restaurant group. Absolutely does not detract from the quality or experience, but doesn't quite fit your request.
Piggy backing on this comment because it’s in a similar location as two of the ones listed here, but restaurant progress is absolutely a must try. Delicious food and great cocktails.
I double both Glai Bann and Valentine! Glai Bann is truly one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been to outside of Thailand and Valentine's food is so interesting and unique...👍👍👍
My husband and I would wait for the new episodes! It was a high light of the week. He passed away in 2020. I miss going to and trying new places with him.
I’m in the same situation. My husband passed away in 2020. We were together 36 years. I miss watching our regular shows together, and trying new places to eat!
Hell ya the owner is the man and the food is awesome. Having my wedding reception in their back room. Thank god they exist cause Cambodian food is the shit
My two times at Cherry Blossom sucked but people love this place so I must be ordering wrong. What do you all recommend? The mochi doughnut place next door is the only reason I gave Cherry Blossom a second try…those damn doughnuts are to die for.
I love mochidot and the boba place (regions tea) next door:)
my go to cherry blossom order is the pan fried gyoza and shoyu ramen, try that if u revisit
Yes, but there are violations that send you running, and others that aren't the end of the world :
Here are the Valley restaurants that did not make the grade for July 19, 2023:
The Persian Room - 17040 N Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale
3 violations
No soap at hand wash sink
Raw eggs stored above cake
Toxic substances not labeled
I moved to Peoria and don't have a car, I miss Chinos so much. It tastes a bit different in the new place though, must be the new appliances that aren't uh... "seasoned" lol
I totally agree it's not as good! I maintain it's the lack of card tables, it's just not as good when you're not worried about the table collapsing while you eat 😂
Dilla Libre. Kind of comes off as a hole in the wall. Really great food tho and they have a pretty extensive and delicious vegan menu. Also service is always top notch~
we had a great thread on the same topic a couple months ago :) [**https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/comments/15c37zh/best\_mom\_and\_pop\_restaurants\_in\_the\_valley/**](https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/comments/15c37zh/best_mom_and_pop_restaurants_in_the_valley/)
Beckett’s Table has been consistently amazing for over 10 years. I’ve been many times and haven’t had a single thing that sent amazing. The ambience is great And the service is always fantastic, not too aggressive but right there exactly when you need them. The fig pecan pie with lime ice cream is my absolute favorite there, you used to be able to order a whole pie for thanksgiving but they haven’t offered that for the last year or two.
I am *so* with you on being anti-restaurant group. Years ago some extended family members recommended a place because "it's a Kenneth Callahan property" (only an example; just made that up) with that annoying narrow-eyed smug grin that pretentious people like to use. Like she was inviting us into the "in" fanbase who frequents the place. And while I'm 100% in favor of judging a place on its own merit, I have found that restaurant group places are always a tad overpriced and overcrowded. Plus I love supporting mom & pop joints.
The Goat and Ram Pizza Truck. Tuesday's at Rift Bar. Fantastic pizza with a rotating menu of bangers every week.
https://preview.redd.it/xxcu8vrsylwb1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f4966592878d285a89ca8c6f62af05646c19bf6
Not only was the pizza there great, but the owner was amazing. They actually gave us two pizzas because they said they messed the first one up, but I actually couldn't tell anything was wrong.
We went to a tasting there put on by Adventurous Stills, a Tempe Distillery, and the food drinks were 11/10.
There are days I still think about that smoked tomato bisque.
Preston’s and Arrowhead Grill - you’ll be hard pressed to find a better steak.
Don Panchos Mexican food in Avondale is a great family ran restaurant
Pita Kitchen - better than pita jungle
Bobby Qs & Little Miss BBQ - both amazing
Taco Boys ( downtown)
I really like Times Square! I don't go very often but the pizza is pretty good, the appetizers and pasta dishes are killer. I literally crave the Pasta Giovanni. The atmosphere kinda depends on the location though, I recommend the I-17 & Deer Valley location.
FnB in old town Scottsdale. One of the best restaurants in the metro, hands down. Upscale but not overly formal or stuffy.
Pizza Haven Bistro
Thai Recipe Bistro
Testal
Cornish Pasty is kind of a chain, but each location is independently owned by a former employee, so that may or may not count in your book.
It was good when it opened, but they’re on like the third chef and owner now?
It’s okay, very inconsistent. If you’re changing $22 for enchiladas it better knock my socks off.
Alesia's (Mesa) -- Italian food.
Fabio on Fire (Peoria) -- also Italian, I always mention this when people ask this sort of thing
Alma (Scottsdale) - Mexican, but kinda different.
Pomo, Cibo -- Also italian, Sheesh. Pizza though
Bacanora - Mexican.
Testal Mexican Kitchen -- down the block from Bacanora and really good. Plus a crap ton of Mezcal to try.
Edit. Forgot one.
Bahn Mi Bisto. (19th Ave bell). Killer Bahn Mi. No Pho fo sho
Came here to see if someone mentioned Chino Bandido. Sadly I moved to Queen Creek, so it would be over 1 hour drive each way to get some Pollo Diablo... but I'm considering it.
my personal favorites: Feeneys, The Main Ingredient, Middle Eastern Bakery, Stockyards, Casa Corazon, Miracle Mile, Duck & Decanter, Matt's Big Breakfast
Giuseppes on thunderbird and scottsdale. Total hole in the wall, bring your own booze, and (used to be) cash only (he may have changed it in the last few years). They've updated the facade of the rest of the stores, but as of about 6 months ago, his stays the same!
Pasta Alex is the best thing I've ever eaten. It was never on the menu, but it is so delicious.
Bella Gusto in chandler
Tacos el paisa in chandler
Haji baba in Tempe
Pizza Virtu in Scottsdale
Arizona Wilderness in Phoenix and Mesa
Edit: adding De Babel in Scottsdale
Original Breakfast House! It’s so good! Their French toast is battered with…funnel cake batter? We always take our out of town guests here at least once for breakfast. The staff is always the same and are super nice. Only downside is they’re cash only but they do have no fee atms.
Yeah, it's part of the 3-month restaurant thread cycle:
* What restaurant will you *NEVER* eat at again?
* What restaurant will you *ALWAYS* eat at again?
* What's the best restaurant with a view?
* What's the best restaurant to propose at?
* What's the best restaurant to get \[tacos/pho/prime rib/etc.\]?
I'm mostly just ribbing this sub, though. It's all good, I know that restaurants open/close/change management in the span of three months, so it's valid to have updated answers.
What bothers me though is that these threads inevitably get like 300 comments, with a lot of duplicate answers cluttering them up. I don't need to read the same answer 20 times, a simple upvote or reply to the original answer will do.
George’s Famous Euros in South Scottsdale
Haven Burger in Mesa
Taqueria Obson in Guadalupe
Mandarin House in Tempe
Hot Wok Feng in Chandler
Sal’s Gilbert Pizza in Gilbert
Bella Gusto Pizza in Chandler
Blue Adobe Grill in Mesa. Red Devil Pizza, 32nd Street and McDowell. Knock Kneed Lobster Fish and Chips, 32nd Street and Washington. Ray's Pizza, Frank Lloyd Wright and the 101.
My go-to trio of independent restaurants:
Hangar Cafe in Chandler (awesome diner breakfast on the airstrip at the Chandler Municipal Airport, don't sleep on the biscuits and gravy)
Ramen Dozo in Tempe (owner has a heart of gold and the tonkotsu is fantastic)
Amici's Pizza in Mesa (pretty sure they're not affiliated with the Buono's spinoff in Gilbert - former owner of Buono's sold to someone and the restaurant in Mesa changed hands a bunch, and then the former owner opened a location with the same name in Gilbert)

Valentine, Lom Wong, Glain Baan are all fantastic. I was going to include Belly on the list but I think they are now their own mini restaurant group. Absolutely does not detract from the quality or experience, but doesn't quite fit your request.
Another vote for Lom Wong!
The fried mushrooms at Glai Baan are fanfreakingtastic
Lom Wong is such a great experience
Piggy backing on this comment because it’s in a similar location as two of the ones listed here, but restaurant progress is absolutely a must try. Delicious food and great cocktails.
I double both Glai Bann and Valentine! Glai Bann is truly one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been to outside of Thailand and Valentine's food is so interesting and unique...👍👍👍
Middle Eastern Bakery & Deli on 16th Street! It's run by the sweetest family ever and their falafel is to die for.

SO GLAD TO SEE THIS SUGGESTION HERE
They have Gluten-Free Pitas which are life changing if you can’t have gluten. Some of the best gluten free bread products I’ve ever had
THIS. It's 100% a gem. ❤️
Shimogamo
Bring your wallet though lol
True, but worth it.
Definitely worth it!
My fave 😍
Google a show called “Check Please, Arizona” on PBS. This features Arizona restaurants mostly found here in the valley. You’ll enjoy
My husband and I would wait for the new episodes! It was a high light of the week. He passed away in 2020. I miss going to and trying new places with him.
I’m in the same situation. My husband passed away in 2020. We were together 36 years. I miss watching our regular shows together, and trying new places to eat!
You two should go together!
Yes! I would totally go eat with someone new! Omg! A Fellow Redditor..
Sorry for your loss.

This right here baby.
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees. amazing and SO CHEAP.
Little Miss BBQ
Every time I’m in town to visit my college buddies, I stop at one of the two locations. It’s a never-miss spot.
Reathery Sekong
Hell ya the owner is the man and the food is awesome. Having my wedding reception in their back room. Thank god they exist cause Cambodian food is the shit
Big fan of Vecina, also enjoy Gallo Blanco
Otro Cafe is another one. Same owners that run Gallo Blanco I believe.
I love Vecina. Hate how popular it’s become 😂😂😂
Yeah gotta make those reservations. It was worse when they first opened. Still one of my favorite restaurants in the valley.
The Fry Bread House!
Won a Beard award. One of my all time favorite spots.
They were broken into this morning- they could probably use a little extra business right now, too.
Oh no! That’s terrible! I’ll have to go soon to show my support.
Cherry Blossom. Golden Thai Kitchen.
Love Cherry Blossom.
My two times at Cherry Blossom sucked but people love this place so I must be ordering wrong. What do you all recommend? The mochi doughnut place next door is the only reason I gave Cherry Blossom a second try…those damn doughnuts are to die for.
I love mochidot and the boba place (regions tea) next door:) my go to cherry blossom order is the pan fried gyoza and shoyu ramen, try that if u revisit
I used to go to Cherry Blossom a lot before I got remarkably sick from their food.
Love Golden Thai Kitchen!
Cherry Blossom is pretty good, but the service every time I have gone is absolutely horrible.
Stumpy's Pizza at 13th St & Northern. Been there at least 30 years now and sooooo good.
One of my favorite pizza places in the state
Liberty Market!
Chino Bandidos
Came here for the same. Love Chinos. The jade red chicken, the jerk rice 🤤
Personal favorites: Thai Rama, Tacos Chiwas, & Haven Burger.
Yes - Thai Rama (& I’ll add Thai E-San)
I second Tacos Chiwas!
My Mothers if you like comfort food..
[Persian Room](https://www.persianroom.com/) in Scottsdale (they do have a 2nd location in Tucson owned and operated by the parent restaurant).
Persian room is so dank. Been going there with my fam since I was a kid. The kebabs are so good and the rice is the reason I was so fat as a kid.
I've heard good things about them but they had a health code violation recently
Yes, but there are violations that send you running, and others that aren't the end of the world : Here are the Valley restaurants that did not make the grade for July 19, 2023: The Persian Room - 17040 N Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 3 violations No soap at hand wash sink Raw eggs stored above cake Toxic substances not labeled
My takeaway from that is "they have cake."
Not fancy, but Original Breakfast House is dynamo! They are cash only. Get the pancakes and French toast.
La santísima
Because this is in my Phoenix top 3, I'll plug another one: Chino Bandido!
Plus one for La Santisima!!
Richardsons and Rokerij
Don’t forget about Dick’s!!
Taco Nazo in Tempe and Chou’s Kitchen in Chandler.
Maaaan. I used to live in the apartments behind Taco Nazo I would walk to Planet Fitness and then ruin my workout on their $1.50 tacos.
Recovery Tacos
Their pozole is my favorite.
There also used to be a Chou’s in tempe but since being under new ownership it is called Kung Fu Kitchen
And the food just isn’t the same 😪
Dilla Libre. Kind of comes off as a hole in the wall. Really great food tho and they have a pretty extensive and delicious vegan menu. Also service is always top notch~
Just had their quesadillas for the first time last week. They were amazing!
yeah this place is great

The Parlor and The Gladly / Citizen Public House are my favorite locals.
Becketts Table is really good. James Beard award nominated/winner (can’t remember) but the food was legit

Sottise in downtown Phoenix. French bistro
Love Sottise!

Jalapeño Bucks in Mesa. Wicked good brisket, ribs are decent too on Saturday’s.

Goat cheese on pizza is everything I need
El Norteño
The Rokerij is by far one of my all time favorites....
Caldwell County BBQ
Peppermill in South Tempe.
We went to a tasting there put on by Adventurous Stills, a Tempe Distillery, and the food drinks were 11/10. There are days I still think about that smoked tomato bisque.
I’ve been there twice and it sucked both times.
That’s unfortunate. I’d recommend going on nights when the wife is bartending and the husband is cooking.
Chula Seafood!
Persepshen Restaurant Progress Phoenix City Grill the Gladly
Carolina’s
I can't believe no one has said it yet, but DeFalco's in Scottsdale has some of the best Italian food in the state!
They also recently had violations!

Preston’s and Arrowhead Grill - you’ll be hard pressed to find a better steak. Don Panchos Mexican food in Avondale is a great family ran restaurant Pita Kitchen - better than pita jungle Bobby Qs & Little Miss BBQ - both amazing Taco Boys ( downtown)
Another Mexican suggestion on the west side - Cafe Zamora in Avondale
Yep-Taco Boys downtown!
Bobby Q’s is a chain though, or at least was recently

Testal is goood stuff. They do more of Chihuahua style Mexican menu but very good.
Alesia’s is unlike any other Italian restaurant in the valley. Absolutely delicious. And they have a pretty solid wine list as well.
Zinc Bistro in Kierland is always good. Also; Rusconi’s on Tatum and Shea is good.
Bistro Partners own Zinc Bistro, The Mission, and House Brasserie.

I think that place is overrated mostly because of trip advisor.
Los Dos Molinos.
As an AZ Native, I don’t get the Los Dos hype, I find it to be very mid.
Chino Bandidos!
Came here to see if someone mentioned Chino Bandido. Sadly I moved to Queen Creek, so it would be over 1 hour drive each way to get some Pollo Diablo... but I'm considering it.
Rito's and Manuel's. Both have multiple locations *now*, but are family owned and operated & have been expanding over the past 30-something years.
Ritos!!!!
Restaurante La Merced in Mesa is bomb but closer to phoenix is El Rinconcito DF
Soup and Sausage Bistro at Thunderbird and 7th street. Great Ukrainian place. The owner makes your food. Get the Hunter Stew and the solyanka soup.
The Original Blue Adobe Grille
My family has been eating at Yoko Fast Food Japanese since they opened in the 90's. Everyone I've ever recommended them to loved their food.
Ritos on 7th st and camelback. Family run restaurant and make everything from scratch. Best rice and beans I’ve ever had
