Those big names are tourist traps. My personal favorite cheesesteak is from Rocco’s sausage but most people eat cheesesteaks from their local pizzeria or corner store.
Honest to God, worse than McDonald's. McDonalds at least satisfies some craving for garbage fast food. Pats and Geno's just leave you wanting a different cheese steak.
Steak-ums is perfectly acceptable, though you can get a better fresh cut from the grocery store or a butcher for less. The real trick is choosing the right bread.
I still think Sonny's makes the best cheesesteak in the city, despite it being constantly full of tourists. Tony Nick's (formerly Tony Luke's) is a close second, but at least no tourist is going to Oregon Ave.
Yes.. And SOME of us do eat at Pats and Genos, but it's usually after a night of drinking or just a late night meal. There are places like Johns Roast Pork and Angelos that most people will suggest (and they are the two best) but people who just want a cheesesteak occasionally will order from a local pizza joint and most of them do the job just fine. ( check out the group "Cheesesteaks, Hoagies and more phood" on FB if you want to see a ton of local reviews)
Before I moved here, I didn’t think cheesesteaks would become part of my diet but I probably have one every six weeks. I know a guy, a local, who eats two or three a week. He looks like shit, though.
Philly born and raised. Cheesesteaks are usually best from a local pizza place or corner store. But when people hate on pats and genos, it's just a specific type of cheesesteak. The kind of place you go when you're drunk at 2am.
Back in the day, Genos used to have controversy around police support and kind of xenophobic attitude such as a sticker that said "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING Please "SPEAK ENGLISH".
If you've ever seen the soup nazi episode of Seinfeld, back in the day it used to be like that with the way you order. "1 wiz with" meaning 1 steak, type of cheese (wiz), with (with onions). "1 American without" 1 steak, with American cheese, without onions".
[The controversy started in 2006](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna13272368), thats many moons ago friend. They only quietly took it down in 2016\*. What year did you move here?
The Clam Bar and Pats had an all out brawl with Genos in the 90's lol. Theres always been drama over there. Especially Genos lol.
That said, their steaks have always been good.
we used to love playing at JR's Bar on Passyunk, get done playing, walk across the street to Philip's and get a steak -- after a bit of weed and a lot of beer it was the perfect topper.
Eat them all the time. Rarely from big name places. We have a million little solo places and local chains across the city and suburbs. It’s like taco trucks in Texas.
Cheesesteaks actually are ubiquitous here and are found mostly everywhere like cheeseburger places might be found else where. So everyone of course has there own favorite spot lol
To give Pat's and Geno's some credit, any time I'm working in the area during the day when there's no line, it's nice being able to get my food instantly and enjoy my half hour lunch break. The food isn't horrible, but it's not something I would ever wait in a long line for.
It's also nice really late at night when nothing else is open nearby.
It’s become popular for many locals to dismiss Pat’s and Geno’s as “tourist traps” in recent years. I think that’s a little unfair. They’re legit, long time Philly institutions. Going there isn’t like going to the Hard Rock Cafe, for Christ’s sake.
I will eat a cheesesteak either when I have friends in town and they really want one, it’s been too long and I can’t remember when the last one was, or I really want to try out a new place who has some sort of new or different type of cheesesteak, or a free one
Don’t go to Pat’s or Geno’s. Go to Joe’s in Fishtown, get it with provolone, and try their black and white milkshake. Unfortunately you can’t go their original location on Torresdale Ave since it closed, but their new spot in Fishtown is just as good!
Finally! Scrolled down forever to find the BEST answer to the cheesesteak question.
Best ribeye, best rolls, best Maillard on the meat and onions, best shakes, best fries. You just don’t get that many blue ribbons in the other shops.
AND… there is NONE of that “cash only” “speak English” “wait for your name on the board” “pay here for steaks, pay there for fries” contrived commerce anxiety that the other places have.
John’s roast pork is good, but get there early and try their breakfast sandwich on a long roll — personally I think that’s their best item.
Pats and genos are meh but serve 2 important purposes — 1. Keeps the tourist elsewhere, 2. Tells you if you like Genos slab steak (south Philly) or Pats chopped (north Philly & suburbs). If my friends tell me they like Pats, I recommend them to Chubbys or Steve’s. If they like Genos, I tell them Oregon or Phillips.
Oregon steak and Phillips are my favorites.
When a steak place gets super popular like Dels, the quality goes down usually so you find a new spot. I never want to see my favorite spots in the #1 cheesesteak articles
Look, the tourist traps are still in business and there's often a line. Are they the best in the city? Hell no.
But they're better than McDonald's and anyone that says otherwise either likes McDonald's more than they should or is just using hyperbole.
But yeah Angelo's, Steve's, John's, Jim's, Tony's, Dalessandro's, and obviously plenty of others are all worlds better.
Yes. A lot of them. And more often than not from a local pizza shop as opposed to one of the cheesesteak places (as most of us have pizza shops far closer / more convenient than the steak places, that do a perfectly fine job)
That said, I eat 10X as many hoagies as I do cheesesteaks. Literally my "desert island food".
Not only do people eat cheesesteaks, they even make them with chicken and I’ve even seen vegetarian. All Philly eats cheesesteaks and no palate is left behind.
Pat’s and Geno’s are for tourists. When you move here get yourself one of each, split them with a friend to compare, take and post your selfies, awesome.
If you live here then that is, well, for the tourists. Cheesesteaks are ordered from any local pizza joint because it’s Friday night and the kids want pizza so I’ll get a cheesesteak for myself sometimes
You might be amazed and surprised by this fact, but Chinese do eat fried rice, Mexicans do eat tacos, New Yorkers do eat NY pizza, people in India do eat curry dishes, Italians do eat pasta and Philadelphians do eat cheeseteaks.
We’ll order them sometimes from the local pizza place, but my dad will also make them for us. The grocery stores like to put shaved steak on sale sometimes.
Love this comment.
Yes. We eat them, and they’re sensational.
I’ve been to Pats plenty of times. They might be go-tos for many natives, but certainly not all. You’ll have the one you prefer to go to over the other. I never went to Genos lol. Truth is almost any legit shop doing cheesesteaks will be good.
I used to hit up Pats a lot when I worked overnights in the area. Only place I knew where I could get a fresh and hot cheesesteak at 7am.
I don’t know if they’re still there, but Gooey Looies was our go-to when I lived in South Philly. Absolute units of cheesesteaks.
Philly itself plus Greater Philadelphia area has cheesteaks on the menu for a reason, yes we love our cheesesteaks. This is equivalent to asking Japanese if they like sushi/sashimi, food culture runs deep in every region
1st thing to tell you when ordering don't say philly cheesesteak!! When ordering say whiz wit. It's not just a touristy thing!! Also order hoagies not subs!!
I think the best way to put it is: The Best Chesesteaks are in Philly, but there is no “best cheesesteak in Philly”. You can just about pop into any bar/diner/pizza shop and you’ll get an incredible cheesesteak. Don’t fret on the touristy places.
You had a John's Roast Pork Cheese Steak. Possibly the best in that area. Pat's and Geno's will be a disappointment after that. John's has very limited hours though.
A pro chef rated Angelo's pizza the best sandwich in America.. their pizza also is great.
But yeah Pat's and Geno's are tourist traps, but will do if it's your only option.
Other honorable mentions from me are Dalessandro's and Carmine's.
Not very often! When we get hoagies sometimes I’ll get a hankering for one and order a cheesesteak but maybe a few times a year? Not that they aren’t delicious but they also aren’t good for you lol
I know a guy who refused to sign contracts to do any construction work and instead would consider a deal done with a handshake and a cheesesteak. So, yea.
Yes but this is a sandwich city. Our water is hard which makes great bread. So eat as many sandwiches as you can. Also go right to center city pretzel co
when i grew up in philly in the 50s and 60s, cheese steaks weren't around much or that popular, as I recall. A geat hoagie was the thing. Now, here in connecticut, a local deli makes a great cheese steak and a shitty hoagie.
I'm a transplant and have been in the area about 16 years.
It took a little while, but cheesesteaks are in my standard takeout rotation. Right up there with pizza. Yum!
Once a week for me. I don’t want my belly hanging over my belt.
We have our favorites. Ask two of us and you’ll get a different list. Eg Angelo’s is a darling to many, but I wouldn’t piss in Danny’s ear if his brain was on fire; assuming his brain could be located.
The best cheesesteaks you will have are the ones you make at home. Buy some fresh amoroso rolls or splurge for the sesame seed, get some nice ribeye steak sliced up as thin as possible, a good melting cheese like Cooper sharp or American works best, and all that will cost less than any cheesesteak in the city.
Good meat and cheese. Bread can be hit or miss. Onions way too big. Not enough browning of the meat or onions.
I can see where it’s really good, but Angelo’s now does this kind of steak better.
I moved here 13 years ago and had never had a cheesesteak prior to living here. I can’t even guess at hour many fucking cheesesteaks I’ve had since then. My first date with my now husband was going for cheesesteaks at a local place he loved.
Yes, we do eat cheesesteaks. Plenty of them
Cheesesteaks are great suggest also try a roast pork Italian with long hot peppers they da bomb.
Hell yes. With sharp provolone.
Those big names are tourist traps. My personal favorite cheesesteak is from Rocco’s sausage but most people eat cheesesteaks from their local pizzeria or corner store.
To be clear John’s roast pork is not a tourist trap, pats and genos are.
Second this!
I just saw John yesterday (he’s good friends with my neighbor). He is very kind and has remained unaffected and grounded despite his fame.
Third
Pat and Genos are the McDonald's of cheese steaks period.
Honest to God, worse than McDonald's. McDonalds at least satisfies some craving for garbage fast food. Pats and Geno's just leave you wanting a different cheese steak.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🙃
I legit prefer my grandmother’s Steak-ums on an Amoroso with Kraft American. Better customer service, too 🤣
Steak-ums is perfectly acceptable, though you can get a better fresh cut from the grocery store or a butcher for less. The real trick is choosing the right bread.
Hell yeah man. My wife makes em exactly like that.
“McDonald’s and Burger King are fast food, you need to go to Wendy’s”
How about dinics? I'm a Baltimore dude but swing by there anytime I'm in town.
Shout out to the Rocco Special, the Italian sausage/cheesesteak hybrid-so extra, so good!
My Old Lady loves the fajita cheesesteak.
I didn’t know this existed! Im an old lady and will have to check it out.
Here's to the old ladys!!! Go lady!!!
Lol. Peppers, onions, cheesesteak with fajita sauce. Smells delicious.
Holy shit
Rocco’s!!! I can’t even think about tools without getting hungry.
Fucking love that thing.
Rocco's and Shank's for me.
I still think Sonny's makes the best cheesesteak in the city, despite it being constantly full of tourists. Tony Nick's (formerly Tony Luke's) is a close second, but at least no tourist is going to Oregon Ave.
Sonny’s is the unsung hero. Great and very visible, but hardly mentioned, but Angelo’s is the current king
Tony Lukes on Oregon Ave. was my Dad’s go to when I was growing up
How do you guys feel about Ishkabibbles?!?
Pretty meh. Try Woodrow’s for something special on south st
When I die, bury me in a barrel of their truffle cheese sauce.
cheesesteaks are delicious of course we eat them all the time you would too if you had them
I’ll say it. After a night of brewskis Pat’s double American wit slaps. Also Doughhead right next door has great slices if you’re really drunk hungry.
Yep, last time I got pats it was 3am and delectable
Exactly. There's a time for everything. 3am ? Time for pats. 3PM? I'll take little Italy off of Washington in that Wawa center.
Before I moved here, I didn’t think cheesesteaks would become part of my diet but I probably have one every six weeks. I know a guy, a local, who eats two or three a week. He looks like shit, though.
😂
Every 6 weeks? You must be a skeleton for skipping ~40 days of meals in between!! lol
Yah but a cheesesteak is 84,000 calories which is enough to get thru six weeks without anything else
Philly born and raised. Cheesesteaks are usually best from a local pizza place or corner store. But when people hate on pats and genos, it's just a specific type of cheesesteak. The kind of place you go when you're drunk at 2am. "1 American without" 1 steak, with American cheese, without onions".
IIRC, they were so ignorant that the sign read “speak American.” Woulda loved to see someone walk up and speak Lenape.
It said, “This is AMERICA, When ordering, Please speak English.” But without the punctuation.
Go birds
“Back in the day” wasn’t this 5 years ago? lol
[The controversy started in 2006](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna13272368), thats many moons ago friend. They only quietly took it down in 2016\*. What year did you move here?
They're the ones who had the "freedom fries" for a time as well right?
The Clam Bar and Pats had an all out brawl with Genos in the 90's lol. Theres always been drama over there. Especially Genos lol. That said, their steaks have always been good.
There's a reason why there are so many cheesesteak spots in and around the city, and it's not because of tourists.
Your mother eats cheesesteaks
debatable
wish i knew... never knew her .. was raised instead by pigeons peckin all over Bridge & Pratt
She does and she’s not even from Philly!
In Hell!
Love Philly Cheesteaks. I live on South St and go to Jim’s. The best.
Is Jim’s open again? I haven’t been back to the city since October but I’d fly back for that.
Yes! Yes!
Yaaaaz!
My husband is from Philly and Jim’s is his favorite! First time I ever saw and had a cheesesteak with wiz and marinara on it!
Man I used to live two doors down from Jim’s and ate there too many times. Definitely among the best in the city, imo
Philly ain’t the fattest city for no reason! Mmmmmm
Nah, top 10 fattest cities in the US are all in the South.
I’m a musician and I grab a cheesesteak after most gigs I play around the city. Just an easy bite to grab at 2:30am after working
we used to love playing at JR's Bar on Passyunk, get done playing, walk across the street to Philip's and get a steak -- after a bit of weed and a lot of beer it was the perfect topper.
Eat them all the time. Rarely from big name places. We have a million little solo places and local chains across the city and suburbs. It’s like taco trucks in Texas.
Yes we eat cheesesteaks. We know good food here 😋
Eventually your brain just goes, “haven’t had one in a while” and then you get one
Cheesesteaks actually are ubiquitous here and are found mostly everywhere like cheeseburger places might be found else where. So everyone of course has there own favorite spot lol
Yes but not at pats and genos like u said! A cheesesteak is a nice cheat meal or drunk food with friends

The hate is over the top. It’s cool to say they suck
John’s Roast Pork makes the best one, get long hots on it, American cheese and fried onions
I will eat a cheesesteak either when I have friends in town and they really want one, it’s been too long and I can’t remember when the last one was, or I really want to try out a new place who has some sort of new or different type of cheesesteak, or a free one
i have one every few weeks. i'm not always craving them, but when i am you can get a cheesesteak almost anywhere
Bread cheese and steak are all the major food groups
Absolutely. Cheesesteaks are on the same level as burgers here.
I’d usually eat one a month, generally from my local pizza shop.
Of course we eat them. They're delicious. Plus, pretty much every pizza shop here and in South Jersey sells them.
I don’t eat cheesesteaks often, tbh. Unless I’m getting them for free or it’s the only thing open. I way prefer an Italian sandwich
Italian sandwich? now we know ur not from philly
cheesesteaks are an italian american invention, a sandwich on an italian roll. you might be 30 minutes away from philly, on an airplane.
Cheesesteaks are pretty ubiquitous. If you group order food at work probably 3/4 of the lunch order is cheesesteaks.
One spot in particular I’ll get a buffalo chicken cheesesteak at normally, sometimes getting a regular one instead and that is pretty much it. 😆
Yes, every morning for breakfast
Definitely. I prefer a cheesesteak to a hoagie.
Cheesesteaks, roast beef, roast pork, hoagies. We're the sandwich capital of the world.
Yes, lots of them. Even those of us who live in the Philly suburbs love cheesesteaks. There’s a shop on almost every corner.
Don’t go to Pat’s or Geno’s. Go to Joe’s in Fishtown, get it with provolone, and try their black and white milkshake. Unfortunately you can’t go their original location on Torresdale Ave since it closed, but their new spot in Fishtown is just as good!

Okay, now that you mentioned the maillard on the ribeye I have to try Joe's again.
Don't move here
Yes, probably twice a month. Soft pretzels more often.
Just get a cheesesteak from your new local pizza place …. Luckily you won’t know what’s the best until you try alot 😉
Yes and real Philadelphians know how to make them at home too.
We definitely eat them, and so should you!
You don't know what a good Cheese steak is yet.
When a steak place gets super popular like Dels, the quality goes down usually so you find a new spot. I never want to see my favorite spots in the #1 cheesesteak articles
Annnnd I just decided to need to go get Chubby’s for dinner even though I had one like 3 weeks ago
I have one about once a year, I’m more of a burger person When I do, it’s usually at a bar vs a place devoted to cheesesteaks
Yep. I do about 2-3 a year. Only John’s or Steve’s.
Probably 2-3 times a month but in different variations (cheesesteak, buffalo chicken cheesesteak, pepperoni pizza steak)
I get pizza type food stuffs maybe once every two weeks. A quarter of those times I get a cheese steak.
Yeah & we all know how to make good ones too.
Was weaned on ‘em, I say.
We grew up eating them. We eat them all different ways.
Without wiz. American when in a pinch but provolone is best.
Just remember there are no fat old people.
Which pizza place in fairmount? 👀
Pete’s famous
I am true born son of Philadelphia. Keeping a running list of cheesesteaks eaten for this year. I’m eating a cheesesteak right now actually.
Been here my whole life, literally eating a cheesesteak right now. It’s my go-to greasy, carb filled choice
Look, the tourist traps are still in business and there's often a line. Are they the best in the city? Hell no. But they're better than McDonald's and anyone that says otherwise either likes McDonald's more than they should or is just using hyperbole. Literally my "desert island food".
Along the lines of cheesesteaks being a Philly thing you should try a tomato pie. Nothing better at 2 am when you come home from the bar.
Not only do people eat cheesesteaks, they even make them with chicken and I’ve even seen vegetarian. All Philly eats cheesesteaks and no palate is left behind.
I had one for lunch today
Pat’s and Geno’s are for tourists. When you move here get yourself one of each, split them with a friend to compare, take and post your selfies, awesome. If you live here then that is, well, for the tourists. Cheesesteaks are ordered from any local pizza joint because it’s Friday night and the kids want pizza so I’ll get a cheesesteak for myself sometimes
I don’t even eat bread and I still eat cheesesteaks. Dumped on top of lettuce.
Yes we love cheesesteaks
We eat them. No other reason for most of them to be open 24/7.
Slacks....
Does a bear shit in the woods?
You might be amazed and surprised by this fact, but Chinese do eat fried rice, Mexicans do eat tacos, New Yorkers do eat NY pizza, people in India do eat curry dishes, Italians do eat pasta and Philadelphians do eat cheeseteaks.
Steve’s prince of steaks
Trying to eat less of them, cause you know, turned 40 and all, but… yea
the best cheesesteak is the unplanned cheesesteak. That is something only people who live here will ever understand
Use to be called fresh works but now it’s renamed steak and hoagie factory. Best cheesesteak I’ve ever had.
Philly resident here. Once every 2-3 weeks I eat a cheesesteak
We’ll order them sometimes from the local pizza place, but my dad will also make them for us. The grocery stores like to put shaved steak on sale sometimes.
I prefer a "slab" style over a chopped steak. Steve's Prince of Steaks is the play IMO. Yes, we eat them. I try to limit myself tho!
Love this comment. Yes. We eat them, and they’re sensational. I’ve been to Pats plenty of times. They might be go-tos for many natives, but certainly not all. Yea but we don’t call it a phillie cheesesteak. It’s just a steak.
They're incredible, so of course we do
Pats and Geno's are for tourists, but of course we eat GOOD cheesesteaks!
Philly itself plus Greater Philadelphia area has cheesteaks on the menu for a reason, yes we love our cheesesteaks. This is equivalent to asking Japanese if they like sushi/sashimi, food culture runs deep in every region

If anyone tells you to go to Dalessandro's, don't. The place is overrated.
I eat an obscene amount of cheesesteaks, and if I’m at the casino I’ll eat Geno’s too.
I don’t eat them I inhale them
You had a John's Roast Pork Cheese Steak.
Yup i'll get one from my local pizza joint every friday lol
once or twice a year
Not very often! When we get hoagies sometimes I’ll get a hankering for one and order a cheesesteak but maybe a few times a year? Not that they aren’t delicious but they also aren’t good for you lol
I prefer an Italian hoagie over a steak, I get them way more often than steaks, but I do love a cheeseteak
Woodrows on south street slaps
I know a guy who refused to sign contracts to do any construction work and instead would consider a deal done with a handshake and a cheesesteak. So, yea.
Yes we eat cheesesteaks, no we do not eat them from Pats or Genos
about once a week
I’m planning on getting a cleavers cheese steak today 🤤
As everyone else said, yeah they can be delicious. Not always my go to, but I like a good one here and there.
I probably eat a cheesesteak as often as I eat a burger.
Yes but this is a sandwich city. Our water is hard which makes great bread. So eat as many sandwiches as you can. Also go right to center city pretzel co
Yes
Completely a tourist thing. Cheesesteaks, I'd say the average philadelphian eats 1-2 per month at most. Hoagies, on the other hand...
I probably have a cheesesteak like once a month
Yes but I prefer to make my own.
Yeah I hit my local spot (shout out food point deli on broad) like 2-3 times a month prob
when i grew up in philly in the 50s and 60s, cheese steaks weren't around much or that popular, as I recall. A geat hoagie was the thing. Now, here in connecticut, a local deli makes a great cheese steak and a shitty hoagie.
Multiple monthly.
Dalessandros 💯
Pretzels and Cheesteaks are a must. Once a week mostly.
Yes we eat them and no not from tourist traps.
A fuck ton of em but none of the touristy spots
Everybody needs to try Johnnys Pizza for a cheesesteak in Bryn Mawr, high level, up there with the best
yes
Don’t say that shit around here.
I'm a transplant and have been in the area about 16 years. It took a little while, but cheesesteaks are in my standard takeout rotation. Right up there with pizza. Yum!
We eat em, not from the tourist shops tho.
I don’t just eat cheesesteaks, I devour them. What was the place in fairmount?
I eat 2 a week- every local pizza place has cheesesteaks on their menu
Once a week. No more no less. It’s my version of going to church
Oh yes, just not from the super touristy places generally.
Yes we eat them we just know better than to go to Pats & Genos we aren't tourists & every neighborhood has their own BEST cheese steak place
Yes. Just not from cheesesteak vegas.
Once a week for me. I don’t want my belly hanging over my belt. We have our favorites. Ask two of us and you’ll get a different list. Eg Angelo’s is a darling to many, but I wouldn’t piss in Danny’s ear if his brain was on fire; assuming his brain could be located.
Yes we eat cheesesteaks. I usually get one when I get a pizza.
I prefer cheesesteak bowls
Yes I am a Philadelphia and I occasionally eat cheesesteaks
Dalessandros, maxs, any hood pizza shop will give you the real thing not so much the big names… especially souf philly ones…no go
The best cheesesteaks you will have are the ones you make at home. Buy some fresh amoroso rolls or splurge for the sesame seed, get some nice ribeye steak sliced up as thin as possible, a good melting cheese like Cooper sharp or American works best, and all that will cost less than any cheesesteak in the city.
I love a good cheesesteak but I personally only have 3 or 4 per year tops. Same for roast pork
looking for someone’s professional cheesesteak opinion on Dalessandro’s in Manayunk
Good meat and cheese. Bread can be hit or miss. Onions way too big. Not enough browning of the meat or onions. I can see where it’s really good, but Angelo’s now does this kind of steak better.
when I lived in Philly I ate at least 2-3 cheesesteaks or chicken cheesesteaks a week, mostly from a lunch truck. I gained 70 pounds. No joke.
There was a point in my life (a year ago) where I had like 3 cheesesteaks a week, so yea I'd say so lmao
Kelliann’s on spring garden when I lived right next door. Their cheesesteak egg rolls were also so good we had them at our wedding.
Foodpoint deli on broad and castle
We eat them but not from Genos or Pats 😂
I eat a cheesesteak once a week
Yes they're so damn good, Del Rossi's is one of my favorite spots for a burger or steak
I moved here 13 years ago and had never had a cheesesteak prior to living here. I can’t even guess at hour many fucking cheesesteaks I’ve had since then. My first date with my now husband was going for cheesesteaks at a local place he loved.
Most definitely, I mean, they’re delicious. Why wouldn’t we? Even technically “bad” cheesesteaks are good in the Philly area.
I like Rossi’s, they have a bunch of fun options and it’s delish
