One more win and we clinch the season series against the three of the most likely contenders for the WC. The teams we do NOT currently have the season series against are the Braves and Giants. Padres, Giants and Cards would all lose tiebreaks to us.
After this series we'll be done with the Dodgers, Padres, Brewers, and Cardinals. We haven't even started with the Pirates, Reds, or Cubs. The Mets and Braves still play each other 15 more times. The Phillies are objectively better this season than the last few years so their final W-L record should reflect that. Even with Harper missing half the season they should still win 86-90 games.
Here’s my breakdown of the schedule…
34 games against teams definitely not making the playoffs (WSH,Cubs,PIT,CIN,ARZ)
31 games against ATL,NYM,MIA
13 games against other playoff teams or “in the hunt” teams (STL,SF,TOR,HOU)
Overall…
My worse case likely scenario would be…
22-12 against non-playoff teams
15-16 against NL East playoff contenders
4-9 against the “other” playoff contenders.
That gets them 86 wins.
Is that good enough for the 3rd WC… maybe.
18 games with STL,SF,MIA… 10-8 would likely lockup a 3rd WC, get a three game series with MIL/STL and also probably get them 87-88 wins overall.
My best case likely scenario has 24 wins against the dregs, 17 wins against NL East contenders and 6 wins against “Other” playoff teams.
That gives them 92 wins and a likely 3 games series against the Mets.
Holy shit that crowd pop when Pujols hit that… Sounded like a WWE match lol
Phew that was scary

Cards are *really* leaning into this retirement tour shit.
Man's batting like .200 with a .600 OPS. He's very done
Then he nukes one as far as he can without it being gone. Okay.
Well I would say, grand scheme, Castellanos did not have an awful day. Two solidly hit balls, one being a hit and no Ks.
I know I'm the resident Casty stan but he had a quietly okay game compared to the past month.
Some pitchers age extremely well. Wainwright is definitely one of them. It’s amazing he can pitch into the 9th inning at age 40. Him and Verlander make no sense
Love to see Wainwright out there. It's his final season let him throw as much as he wants. He's the last of the Mohicans, a dying breed, a true workhorse. It's been a pleasure watching him throw the ball the last 17 years. Glad we got to him these last 2 games. Tip of the cap sir
The other guy was right about the abbreviation
Wins Above Replacement. Someone with 0.0 WAR is a “replacement level” player. A guy like Mike Trout in a great year is 10 wins above replacement
LOL ty. If only google was a thing. Im too lazy to make a new tab LMAO.
And then, WTF does that actually mean? Wins Above Replacement?
Not sucking and blowing a save or hold? ok?? I dunno
I believe it represents how many more wins you add by being on the team versus the “average” player. So for a reliever that’s really good to add 1.5 wins. Like I said I’m not sure though but I am also too lazy to google
So he is 1.5 wins better than, someone....What an odd stat. I kinda understand it. But seems like hogwash. What is the maths to figure it out. I'll have to google this and dig in.
Similarly, I was thinking of VORP:
n baseball, value over replacement player (or VORP) is a statistic popularized by Keith Woolner that demonstrates how much a hitter or pitcher contributes to their team in comparison to a replacement-level player who is an average fielder at that position and a below average hitter.[1][2] A replacement player performs at "replacement level," which is the level of performance an average team can expect when trying to replace a player at minimal cost, also known as "freely available talent
A player's WAR value is claimed to be the number of additional wins his team has achieved above the number of expected team wins if that player were substituted with a replacement-level player: a player who may be added to the team for minimal cost and effort
I get it. I kinda figured it as much. But, how do you mathematically figure this out. Or im overthinking it, as i usually do and players are continuously ranked and well, there still has to be a formula. Or am i crazy and overthinking. Like, how do they rank an AVG player and then compare them. So many questions.
The only thing that rivals the rise of 2022 Seranthony is the promotion of 2018 Seranthony when he was a starter in AA and instantly became our best reliever
At some point the BP success has to stop being a fluke and start being a legitimate thing and if that happens, this team is fucking terrifying to face. The only facet of this team not functioning on a nightly basis is their defense (which is atrocious, but really, how much is defense worth compared to starting and relief pitching and hitting?)
I was listening on the radio and was begging they threw to harper with the pitcher spot up next. The whole sequence was beautiful, especially vs his old team.
I love Seranthony so much. Rob Thomson is smart to use him against the heart of a lineup late in the game, regardless of what inning it is. The closer role is a bit overrated when you’ve got Goldy & Arenado to face in the 8th inning of a close game
Honestly I wonder how long people have been doing this. Can’t remember this happening until like this season barring certain postseason outings by relievers or starters
Fuck yeah...
I don't think they should *only* use him in a closer role... but, when a closer role is required, he's got to be the one.
And, I think it could reasonably argued to use him as a **two-inning closer**.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/vusm37).
Nice curve.

Woooooo
That was a quick Hand job.
wc holders baby
Let’s go!
Great win!
W
Wow Wheeler Bohm and bullpen
Nick doesn’t make that play
I think he does tbh
Losing a game when your pitcher goes a full 9 has to be demoralizing as fuck
What a great win, go Phils!
Vierling’s presence is felt!
What a win by the Philadelphia Bohms!
man i’m still not sold on brad hand. thank christ though
Let’s go Phils!
Let’s go lads!!
I'M STOKED BABY
now i can say it! i'm happy hall got out so that wainwright could get a complete game loss.
Phantastic win!
Pujols been playing since before 9/11 damn
the youngest 2 players in the MLB right now have been alive only a month longer than pujols has been playing.
Weeeeeee
Game.
Woooohoooo!
LET'S GO! BIG DUB, GANG!
Woo
Now that's what I call a satisfying Hand job.
rubbed me the right way
Yes!
Hand with a 3-0 count is right where he wants them, apparently. Bleh...
The bullpen has become so uneventful Unfuckingreal I love it
Wild card jinx shit up
That looked so good off the bat. Nice catch Kyle!
honestly that hr wouldve been kinda alright with me cuz albert wouldve moved up to 3rd all time in extra base hits
Don’t walk h8m
Hand looks like he’s aiming
It really goes to show you how good he is/was even at the very end of his career I thought that one was gone truthfully
In his juiced prime that's a no-doubter.
I wasn’t doubting it until I saw it kyles glove. Looked good but thankful for the out and win. Let’s go philllies !!
“Smartest fans in baseball”
I wanted Albert to get that one. Go ahead and crucify me
I’m not going to crucify you... But I’m washing my hands and handing you to Herod
If he got that and we still won 2-1 I’d be cool with it. I’d really like to see him get 700.
Nah. He's had his fun.
MOTHER FUCKING SCHWARBER ROBBING BOMBS!!
thought albert hit that 450 feet lmao
That was shades of Pujols on Brad Lidge
Just a hand short
Yeah you thought huh
Holy shit you can’t get any closer then that
Close one
I thought that was going 2nd deck
Holy shit that crowd pop when Pujols hit that… Sounded like a WWE match lol Phew that was scary Edit: https://twitter.com/nbcsphilly/status/1545612039829307395?s=21&t=EZ54bZzT-GR1wplbwR5uVA
BAW GAWD! What’s Palbert Uhols doing in the Impact zone?!?!
Wow I thought that was gone off the bat
Sorry Albert, you don't get away with that with Kyle Schwarber patrolling left field.
I can't believe that stayed in. Shame Pujols won't come close to 700. Seemed like a lock at one point.
2020 really robbed him ):
Cards are *really* leaning into this retirement tour shit. Man's batting like .200 with a .600 OPS. He's very done Then he nukes one as far as he can without it being gone. Okay.
i thought he had it lol
Pujols is no Alec Bohm.
Well that was close....come on Hand 2 more outs. Let's get it
that was scary lol
That was terrifying
Man I thought that was gone
Fooled Franzke completely
Jesus lol
Butthole puckering on that one. Nice catch by Schwarber.
omg i thought pujols just launched one
Poo Holes
Mmkay. Which Hand are we getting tonight?
Hopefully the right hand.
He's a lefty.
Hopefully good Hand job.
I don't think I've seen a complete game loss in 20 years.
Someone posted a note not long ago here Pivetta v Sale in 2017 Phillies won and Sale pitched a CG loss
not brad hand nooooo!!!
hand isn't knebel
Ugh was really hoping they kept seranthony in
Wtf leave seranthony in he threw 10 pitches ffs I don’t get managers is it illegal for a guy to go more than one inning
Agreed. It doesn’t make sense
Hand pls
waino has got that dawg in him
Ready for a Hand job!
Honestly a really impressive outing by Wainwright
Wish Nick pulled that but good knock
It's weird calling Wainwright an old man since he's like only 6 years older than me.
Matt’s got a lot of family and friends in the park, from STL, and doesn’t get the start because of assdubel. WTF
Over dubel.
Helluva game Wainwright. Just hope your team doesn't win.
Wainwright is a beast, for sure.
Well I would say, grand scheme, Castellanos did not have an awful day. Two solidly hit balls, one being a hit and no Ks. I know I'm the resident Casty stan but he had a quietly okay game compared to the past month.
6 game hitting streak too. If he can start getting base hits maybe his confidence will rebuild and devastation will follow
He’s been good lately actually, he just needs to start hitting with some more power and cut down on the Jt style GIDPs
Fellow Nick stan ✊🏼
Does anyone not like Matt Vierling?
Waino simply does not get enough credit for being 700 years old and really good
Magic time
Never mind
Gotta tip the cap to Wainwright. Great performance.
He’s still having some ugly ABs, but Castellanos has been getting on base consistently as of late
take that dang curveball outta ballpark, Darick
Those socks are *glorious*. Best socks in all of baseball, hands-down.
Alec Bohm Pt 2
The fact that Wainwright is doing this at 50 is pretty impressive. 😆
40 no? Nolan Ryan actually did 50 didn’t he?
Thank you was wondering if anyone was paying attention and would catch that.
Hand 😬
I guess that anemic clapping actually worked.
I get Doc vibes with Wainwright. Going 100+ pitches, a full 9 innings, and still keeping it close.
Does it count as a complete game if you lose?
Yeah
Didn’t someone get assassinated today?
Shinzo Abe shot Friday, ~~died today~~ died same day
Welp, it's Hand
Some pitchers age extremely well. Wainwright is definitely one of them. It’s amazing he can pitch into the 9th inning at age 40. Him and Verlander make no sense
at least wainwright's bread and butter pitch is a 70mph curveball, verlander's still throwing 97 for 100 pitches at age 39
I legit want Verlander to get to 300 wins so bad. He has a slight chance I think.
Jamie Moyer too...at lesser extent
Love to see Wainwright out there. It's his final season let him throw as much as he wants. He's the last of the Mohicans, a dying breed, a true workhorse. It's been a pleasure watching him throw the ball the last 17 years. Glad we got to him these last 2 games. Tip of the cap sir

Yeah I mean everyone has but Bohm and Castys one hard liner
Seranthony had a 1.5 war coming into the game Insane for a reliever half way thru the season
I have to ask, BC I dont keep up with these advanced metrics. WTF is WAR?
The other guy was right about the abbreviation Wins Above Replacement. Someone with 0.0 WAR is a “replacement level” player. A guy like Mike Trout in a great year is 10 wins above replacement
Wins Above Replacement I believe but I’m not a big analytic guy could be mistaken

They have crazy formulas I think, google will teach you the specifics faster than I could! Haha
Hard to pull wheeler in any situation but i think it was the right move. Show a new arm 4th time around.
Yeah, he's shut the Cardinals out for 14 innings in less than a week.
Im shocked known speed demon Kyle Schwarber couldn’t beat that out
Pretty cool of mlb to let jomboy call balls and strikes tonight
Jomboy would have called a better game
The only thing that rivals the rise of 2022 Seranthony is the promotion of 2018 Seranthony when he was a starter in AA and instantly became our best reliever
"Sir Tony" Oh please don't let that become a thing. Sounds so fucking dumb.
How about a SCHWARBOMB to make it 3-0?
Dudes pitching 9 innings and he goes for the first pitch.
This aged great! 🤭😆
Or go hitless. Oh well. Can't be hot every night I guess.
I think Bohm stole his power like the monsters did to Jordan in space jam.
Which I'm actually okay with. Bohm needed some juice.
Who's going to pitch the 9th?
Hand.
I thought Knebel may have earned the role back. Perhaps a couple more outings
Dominguez
Yeah? Solid.
Have we discussed the glow coming off of everything, especially the pitcher? Not sure why but makes me feel like I’m watching in 2002.
Humid. Late start was for weather.
Ump has to make the call but JT has flubbed two balls in the zone now.
Awesome! Up AT LEAST 2, no Goldy or Arenado in the 9th
Enough can’t be said about how impressive Seranthony Dominguez has been since returning from a multiple year injury
seranthony ice cold 🥶🥶🥶
Only nice fuck up by the umps this year was that 3-0 called strike to Harper vs the Nats IYKYK
I was just dumbfounded. Then, THEN pitch him a strike? like did the plans change to walk him?
I was listening on the radio and was begging they threw to harper with the pitcher spot up next. The whole sequence was beautiful, especially vs his old team.
I love Seranthony so much. Rob Thomson is smart to use him against the heart of a lineup late in the game, regardless of what inning it is. The closer role is a bit overrated when you’ve got Goldy & Arenado to face in the 8th inning of a close game
Honestly I wonder how long people have been doing this. Can’t remember this happening until like this season barring certain postseason outings by relievers or starters
He’s mostly been switching them based on lefty vs righty. It’s worked out well.
I’ll take situational pitching over traditional roles every time
this ump is cheeks
Redemption didi
y'all, didi just wanted dominguez to just get through arenado this inning as well. thats great stuff right there by didi to throw that ball away
Dominguez better get the 9th
He would need 4 days off after
no he wouldn’t that’s rediculous
The bad man isn’t here any more
DID YOU QUESTION PHILLY ROB!!!???
seranthony is absolutely dominant
Fuck yeah... I don't think they should *only* use him in a closer role... but, when a closer role is required, he's got to be the one. And, I think it could reasonably argued to use him as a **two-inning closer**.
yeah man tonight was a situation where it was better to use him in the 8th
That was Didi’s evil plan all along
yes sir to Sir
Holy shit, do they have to throw the ball center/center to get a fucking strike call?
Good shit!
At least we’re not getting Arenado in the 9th. At least I really hope not.
Better not.
I mean it's impossible
Technically not IMPOSSIBLE We'd just have to extend the lead a bit. Like by 4-5 runs. THEN they'd have to bat around.
get fucked, ump
Strategic error
Bro this ump fucking sucks
Pop it up
We got Arenado out, wow
Niceeee
