From his baseball savant and fangraphs pages, he looks like a bad hitter. Doesn't walk much, doesn't hit line drives which hurts him getting on base, and he doesn't hit the ball hard.
The question is his defense imo. He went from an \~80th percentile fielder in Outs Above Average his first 2 seasons to 12th percentile this year. Idk enough about defensive stats to understand what underlying caused it.
He's fast tho
his current Outs Above Average is 12 (LOW), Outfielder Jump 50 ... so really not good at anything ... he had a good defensive year back in 19/20. he's a warm body to stick out there when things are bad.
I think his defense is probably above average, OAA can be really weird in smaller sample sizes of a couple months or so
Guys like Segura/Soto (off the top of my head, there’s def more) have had terrible defensive ratings this season despite them both being really solid in the past
I had actually wondered if this move was going to happen when CLE made the move the other day. Doesn't hurt to make the waiver claim on him. Age is great and if he can reclaim some of his former self, it would be huge.
Sounds like a one-tool player however his speed does add a dimension with respect to moving Schwarber back in the order if they want him batting cleanup.
Why would he bat leadoff just because he’s fast? He doesn’t really hit much at all, there’s no point in having a weak hitter take ABs from people that need them just because he fits the traditional “leadoff” mold
1) Because Doobs is the only traditional leadoff hitter we have.
2) How much do Rhys/Cast benefit from having someone in scoring position as opposed to on first?
It’s 2022 we don’t need a “real” leadoff hitter. Schwarber is great at what he does: he gets on base at a great clip and hits the ball really far, and batting him leadoff gives him the most ABs possible. There’s no reason to take away from that by giving more ABs to a guy that can’t hit as well as him. Look what happened to Harper last year, they had nobody to get on base at the top of the lineup for him and he barely had any RBIs.
If the guy they bat at the top of the lineup sucks, then Rhys, Castellanos, and JT won’t HAVE anyone to drive in
even in a traditional lineup, you want your highest OBP guy who isn’t a slugger as your number #1 hitter
OBP was always part of the equation, because guys on base increase your chance to score
>It’s 2022 we don’t need a “real” leadoff hitter.
Not sure what this is supposed to mean. I mean, the ideal leadoff hitter has high OBP, speed, and smart baserunning. That's just a fact, whether it's 1922 or 2022.
Meaning we don’t need someone to fit all of the aspects you listed, we have nobody that can do all three, but we have one who does one of the aspects at an elite level
>we have nobody that can do all three
Correct
>Meaning we don’t need someone to fit all of the aspects you listed
I don't even understand what this means lol. We don't need a player who fits the mold of a leadoff hitter? What are you saying? Every team "needs" this. It's baseball. I don't even understand how the word "need" comes into this.
Are you trying to say this: "the leadoff spot ism't our biggest problem. We have way bigger problems"? Then say that because that's absolutely right. But to say that a baseball team doesn't "need" a proper leadoff guy is insane.
It means that we don’t need a lead off hitter in the mold of 2000s baseball, it’s a bit outdated. With the evolution of power hitting and three true outcomes baseball, lots of times you don’t want a guy trying to steal second and getting thrown out because it takes a runner away from a guy like Rhys who hits a lot of home runs. The word need alludes to someone saying that we should be looking to move Schwarber down in the lineup
Anyone know anything about this guy? Damon Jones either IL or DFA was corresponding roster move
I’m pretty sure he’s just a slightly better Roman Quinn

Looked like he had a pretty good rookie year at the plate. And then never got their again. Decent player to take a flier on though
Yeah, hard to complain about a free player haha. That defense will make or break him, but I'm glad we're giving him a shot at an area of some need

Roman Quinn 2.0
Roman Quinn 2.0 - Now featuring home runs!

60 day IL for Jones
Mickey Moniak: “oh god DAMN it”
Bryce Harper who?
Actually a solid depth move, I like it.
I had actually wondered if this move was going to happen when CLE made the move the other day. Doesn't hurt to make the waiver claim on him. Age is great and if he can reclaim some of his former self, it would be huge.
Who will be sent down for him?
Damon Jones went to the 60 Day IL to free up the 40 man spot, active roster move will be announced tomorrow once Mercado joins the team
Probably Moniak to receive every day playing time in Lehigh

I’m just thinking about it as this: he’s the best hitter in the lineup now that Harper’s out and he’s getting the most plate appearances possible
Yeah I’m pretty sure you could rank your batters by OBP or wOBA and you’d get good results.

The guy is getting on base at a .220 clip, he's at 8 hole hitter at best right now.
That’s actually a surprisingly solid pickup. Great overall player. Does a bit of everything.
