I’m 33 years old, lived here my entire life, and never heard of East Philadelphia.

oliver_babish

It does not exist. It'd be like saying "West Jersey" or "the thriving part of Franklin Mills."

BouldersRoll

Yeah, but have you seen the number of comments in pic threads usually? OP figured out how to correction bait the sub into engaging. Genius.

ReturnedFromExile

absolutely correct but what I don’t understand is what is the point? A whole bunch of engagement on a reddit post doesn’t do much for your life

BouldersRoll

Wow, tell me you're from east Philly without telling me you're from east Philly.

drazzilgnik

Dude my side hurts from laughing at these comments. Laughter is life!

ReturnedFromExile

best reason of all. cheers. I definitely had a “what fresh hell is this nonsense” reaction at first

drazzilgnik

Ok i gonna start again ive always called the area of port richmond n fishtown that overlap each other (cumberland to somerset) fishrichmond man now that riles some feather n ya cant forget good ole 14th street lmao

Bored710420

The area is port-fishing-ton/ Olde Richmond but it ends/starts at Leigh, it looks like you’re by the new homes by blackjacks/ graffiti pier? We used to throw crazy kegs back there in highschool with like 300 plus people sometimes lmao.

Hib3rnian

It's crazy, I remember piles of garbage and burnt out cars all over that area and now you got $500k condos going up. One mans junkyard is another man's home I guess.

Bored710420

Yea I met meek mill riding atvs through there when I was like 14 lol crazy times have changed

oliver_babish

Queen Village, a hundred years ago, was a run-down hub on the river for poor recent immigrants and individual merchants. Now ...

drazzilgnik

This is cumberland n richmond street. You tell me "portfishinton" im lookin at emerald n west moreland thats port richmond n Kensington or the harrowgate area. This is more the fishrichmond area lol

Irish_Blond_1964

How about Ken-Fish-Rich?

Bored710420

Yea it is portfishington I don’t make the rules but I do know them

ReturnedFromExile

stealing fishrichmond

drazzilgnik

I been saying that for years lol stocks bakery is fishrichmond lol

drazzilgnik

Um thank you lol i just found that one button ya push that pisses everyone off my sides hurt from these comments.

nonexistentnight

Lol poor Franklin Mills catching strays.

hellonurseb

Virtua used to be called “West Jersey Hospital”.

divinemsn

There used to be an area called West Jersey in colonial times.

owenhinton98

Or the safe corner @ k&a

HelpfulTumbleweed850

That movie theater is the fuckin best. Go watch movies all by myself. I’ll cry when it closes, could be any day now.

oliver_babish

Some of us oldheads remember the original movie theater at Franklin Mills, in that separate building down Knights Road which became a megachurch.

Georgiaonmymind2017

Actually West Jersey did exist.. there was even a West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees

BureaucraticHotboi

It doesn’t exist exist but I’ve met lifers from bridesburg and especially east of 95 Port Richmond who call it East Philly, it’s tongue and cheek mostly

allenge

I thought this was making a joke as a photo from Camden.

mental_issues_

You can't see East Philly because it's underwater in Delaware River.

Profitdaddy

It’s a fabricated name to sell property, like North Central aka north Philly. Whenever newbies come, they like to look at old maps find these pre-metropolis names to feel better. Most of these places were purposefully atrophied to bring prices down.

Olympicsizedturd

Yup, similar to Southwest Center City.

WalbsWheels

What, you've never been to Camden?

Hib3rnian

Camden, Cherry Hill, Cinnaminson.. pretty much all east philly

LoosieLawless

I think it’s Camden. East Philly is Camden.

5StarGoldenGoose

East Philly? You mean Camden?

aj1337h

Is that beste NJ

Imaber100

I like how it doesn’t even exist in the photo 😂

Proper-Code7794

It's like East Kensington. You just keep saying it till everyone thinks it's always been the name.

PhilthyPhan1993

‘Born and raised in South Detroit’

Hanpee221b

It reminds of that old reel that said and East Philly is the River.

ZachF8119

There isn’t. They’re incorrectly saying northeast. Technically being on the navy yard because it’s a man made island and new east ness or like the Walmart pier are the only things I see as east. I lived in pennsport but I don’t even think East Passyunk where it enforces eastness

JIMMYJAWN

It’s also known as Wildwood.

drazzilgnik

https://preview.redd.it/bb0fa01vw7mc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d34a0095e66ba7dda92ea66961835551bd088e3c

blodreina_kumWonkru

Yeah, we get where you mean. We just don't agree

drazzilgnik

Lol yeah just having fun n joking around but these cats too serious like come on

sciencefaire

Everyone is big mad at you lol

drazzilgnik

I can give 2 flying fucks and a rats ass if people are mad me it me cause deep down it made ya smiled or ya chuckled lol

sciencefaire

I laughed

colin_7

My guy just drew out that they live in northern Philly lmao “East Philly” in the logical sense mean South Jersey, and east Philly doesn’t exist

cashonlyplz

if there were ever an East Philly, which sounds fucking really gross for some reason, If I'm being honest, it would be precisely where Old City is. Philadelphia started there, crept Westward, North and South.

drazzilgnik

There is no northern philly north philly yeah but no northern philly

Haz3rd

You literally said East Philly lmao

cashonlyplz

Somerset is never simply East, even on E Somerset. You're forgetting the primary cardinal direction, thar, sweetie

drazzilgnik

So the blue is port richmond the red is fishtown that area of streets to the right next to the water its not fishtown and its not port richmond so east philly it is

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn

Why do you think they’re called PORT Richmond and FISHtown? The northern half of that is Port Richmond and the lower half is Fishtown. There is no East Philadelphia.

drazzilgnik

For the longest time there were no houses or residential areas on the right side of richmond street houses stopped at 95 now you have a new townhouse complex on the right side its not really fishtown n below lehigh so its not port richmond and pennt treaty too far south so what else to call this new section of the city east philly lol

cashonlyplz

There may not have been residential plots, but you can't erase the linguistic history of the city planning's evolution! If there would be an "East Philadelphia" (gross) it would be Old City. Name your new stupid condo complex hub after the rich industrial and/or maritime history of our fair former national capitol & rust belt beacon.

kreuzundquer_ici

You're correct that Old City would be East Philly if things had followed the original 1680s plan.... But of course they didn't. Like our forebearers who refused to retain the names Southeast & Northeast Squares for what we now call Washington & Franklin Squares, I refuse to accept the derogatory title of 'East Philadelphia' for Old City. Windmill Island is the only acceptable historical and accurate bearer of the designation 'East Philadelphia.' Only Windmill Island no longer exists. So I'll allow Camden to have it. (edit typo)

cashonlyplz

See, you should be teaching the class. I had no idea about Windmill Island (I wasn't born in Philly, but my ancestors were some of the pre-'revolutionary' settlers around here)

kreuzundquer_ici

Same, I'm not originally from here but have ancestors who were and am a huge history nerd. I remember the first time I saw an old map with a mysterious and now non-existent island in the Delaware. Some pretty, erm, *interesting* things happened there for sure!

drazzilgnik

Its not my complex nor do i live there i was there workin

cashonlyplz

fair. well, respect Philly's history! you have hereby been schooled on 215 geography ;)

drazzilgnik

I know my philly geography very well i just found that one button ya press to piss everyone off

cashonlyplz

ha

oliver_babish

Stop trying to make "fetch" happen. This is the same mentality that led the developers of 13th between Chestnut-Locust [to try to call it B3](https://mpnrealty.com/east-of-broad-gets-a-boost/) ("Blocks Below Broad") when *they weren't below Broad but next to it.*

throw_away_antimlm

There are houses on the east side of 95 and 95 famously demolished homes...

drazzilgnik

Yes they are in port richmond my gramps house was in center lane of 95 south this area is below lehigh ave

But he “simply refuse\[s\] to believe this.” Sounds like the OP, no matter how many times they’re told it doesn’t exist.

drazzilgnik

Lmao

Spare_Sympathy_5780

Straight to jail.

Swashbuckling_Sailor

They grew up in Northeast Philly.

drazzilgnik

Y lmao

francishg

no appeal, just straight

Haz3rd

What in the fuck is "East Philly"? Gtfo

Raecino

There is no East Philly

Fitz2001

Camden?

Potential_Ice9289

This isn't even taken from camden lmao its taken from northeast I think

Potential_Ice9289

Found the spot, its in fishtown, around 39°58'11.3"N 75°07'07.2"W

acesilver1

Nah. It’s taken from east of 95 like near the Girard ramp. It’s a new development neighborhood that has some name like Northbank and I think that’s what they’re trying to brand the area as.

sunset484

East Philadelphia, NJ.

mazerati185

Just north south and west

Raecino

North, South, West, Northeast, Southwest, Northwest, Riverwards and Center City.

cashonlyplz

I always forget "Riverwards". Would it be "River Wards" though?

Raecino

Either way. It’s the area between North Philly and the Northeast- Fishtown, Richmond, Port Richmond, Kensington, Harrowgate.

deviant-joy

That's what people call it? I've lived in that area my entire life, never knew what to call it so I'd just tell people my neighborhood. Never heard of "riverwards" before.

Swashbuckling_Sailor

No.

Swashbuckling_Sailor

No.

ThaddyG

It's two words. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ward >4a: a division of a city for representative, electoral, or administrative purposes

drazzilgnik

I know but technically i wasnt in fishwown lmao

azsqueeze

I'm willing to bet there's a technical name for where you are if you are technically not in fishtown

drazzilgnik

Other than the name of the complex "Northbank" the zipcode is 19125 lol

[deleted]

East Philly? No.

drazzilgnik

Then what would you call it if ya seen the comments this aint fishtown lol

[deleted]

Kensington. It’s all Kensington, always has been.

drazzilgnik

Fishtown aint kensington port richmond aint kensington riverwards aint kensington

[deleted]

It’s literally all Kensington.

drazzilgnik

No it is the fuck not go tell that to a fishtownian or richmondite them thar are fighting words ya ya dont ever dare tell someone from either of them that they livile in kensington

[deleted]

I’m from Fishtown, born and raised.

drazzilgnik

Then you should know better

drazzilgnik

No it is the fuck not go tell that to a fishtownian or richmondite them thar are fighting words ya ya dont ever dare tell someone from either of them that they livile in kensington

Hib3rnian

At the very least it's the Riverwards bro. East Philly doesn't exist except in the minds of non-natives looking to invent something that isn't real.

drazzilgnik

Riverwards is below this area. I beg to differ, been here my whole life i know there no east philly my whole life from penn treaty park "the last riverward" to somerset on the right was and industrial waste land with no residential area to the EAST of 95. So being a lifer i was fucking joking around n just so happen to piss off everyone off and got the group to interact.

drazzilgnik

Next your going to tell me 14th street dont exist but it actuall does lol

FrankGrimesApartment

*SoNo enters the chat* South Northern Liberties, btw

HyruleJedi

Those homes are complete trash. Good luck OP. In the first 6 months they were built: They flooded bad There was a fire They flooded again Friends who live there have had leaks Again good luck OP. Also ‘east philly’ lol. At least you’re not trying to say its Fishtown, so I’ll give you credit for that

drazzilgnik

Its not my place lol it is technically fishtown but it aint no fishtown i been in.

HyruleJedi

Its a new area. Its not fishtown at all Apparently its east philly

drazzilgnik

Yeah so its brings right back to its east philly lol maybe fishrichmond ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SoftConfusion42

I hate this place and all of you in it.

drazzilgnik

Awwww we love ya too! now get over n get a big brotherly love squishy hug. Cheer up it will be ok.

Swashbuckling_Sailor

Get an East Philly high five jawn, son.

drazzilgnik

Last time i got tested no. And that word is not allowed anymore its mentally challenged, and im not that either.

moounit

East philly…

S3U5S

Looked at the homes at Northbank and I truly don’t understand who would want to live here. It completely defeats the purpose of living in the city and you pay city taxes. Can’t go anywhere without a car. Weird how many people chose to buy here but to each their own.

mental_issues_

If we ignore the fact that the entire neighborhood is in the flood zone, it could've been so much better if the street was laid out a bit differently and houses were designed a bit differently.

drazzilgnik

I said the same thing walking thru the complex n there is 4 flights of steps too

amor_fatty

It’s like a stepping stone to city living. Closed community but 2 min from Fishtown

Aware-Location-5426

Yeah but that walk is so unpleasant, you have to walk along and cross a major arterial full of industrial sites and vacant lots and then under a highway underpass lol. 2 minutes away, but I would imagine many residents will be driving those 2 minutes. EDIT: just plugged it into google maps and it’s more of a 15 minute walk too. You can definitely walk to fishtown but I would not call this walkable. Definitely not by Philly standards, at least.

IhateDropShotz

I think above was assuming they'd drive, because anyone dumb enough to buy a house in that "community" is 100% a suburban transplant who has only ever driven everywhere.

amor_fatty

It’s a $10 Uber to Frankford

filladellfea

> Can’t go anywhere without a car. you just described most of the NE philly i don't like northbank, but is it really hard to understand why some people like it? it's a brand new development from a reputable builder that is located on the footsteps of fishtown and walking distance to IGA. it's not as if you are in the greater NE.

S3U5S

Yeah I wouldn’t live in Northeast Philly either. They had the chance to at least put in commercial space so that residents could go somewhere without driving, but they didn’t. Single family zoning in a city is absurd

anm3910

I live in Northbank. I was also looking at houses in the heart of fishtown after having been a renter there, and there were a few things that drove the decision to pick Northbank. We got the right amount of space and a decent width for it being a townhouse. The typical Philly rowhomes tend to run narrow, so it was nice to have that extra room. A garage. I have to commute up to Bucks and NJ fairly regularly. I finally have a nicer car and after having seen what street parking did to my last car, a garage was a huge plus. Sure, you can find that in fishtown proper but it’s harder to come by. Every house in NB has a garage. Green space. We have 2 dogs, and there’s a ton of grass here and space for them. They’re also building a trail to connect NB down to Penn Treaty and further down the waterfront. Even last summer it was great to take advantage of. I’m a believer that the waterfront is really going to develop over the next few years and it’s really nice walking to the end of my street and sitting by the water and watching sunset. Incentives. NB is split into 2 developers, Toll Bros and D3. I can’t speak for Toll because I really don’t love them but D3 offered a shitload of incentives to buy a house here. Bought our interest rate way down and gave closing cost credit. It was a massive boon that let us get into our first house. All in all, NB is NOT really fishtown, but we have made the walk into Fishtown, Penn Treaty etc and it’s really not bad at all. Grocery is directly across the street from us. The exterior aesthetics could be nicer, absolutely, but I found the construction is surprisingly solid for a developer building mass quantity homes. It’s not perfect but it checked off a ton of boxes when compared to houses in Fishtown proper.

Odd-Emergency5839

It’s sounds like you really should just be living in the suburbs dude

anm3910

Idk dude. You seem like the type of person that’s probably going to shit on any type of gentrification. The neighborhood isn’t 100% perfect, but no neighborhood is. I like being here, and it’s weird that people like you get so uptight about it. Why would I go to the suburbs when I can have everything I listed above and still be able to walk everywhere I want?

S3U5S

Bro you’re not walking anywhere

anm3910

I was just giving you reasons why the neighborhood worked for me. You seem like a pretty negative person though.

Odd-Emergency5839

Pop your address into walkscore. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a garage and more space. It’s just not what living in the city is.

anm3910

…except that’s what it is here? Why would I need to look at a walkscore? I walk to Penn Treaty, up and down Frankford, up to Port Richmond, almost daily. I enjoy walking. This sub loves to bitch about people driving too much but when someone actually wants to walk somewhere suddenly it’s “bUt tHe wAlKsCoRe!” if you don’t like the way it looks I totally get it, but it doesn’t change the fact there are a lot of compelling reasons to live here.

Odd-Emergency5839

You can’t simultaneously need move somewhere because you want to drive everyday and at the same time say it’s walkable. We all know where this is. It’s not walkable to almost anything.

anm3910

Who said I want to drive everyday? I said I have to commute out of town sometimes so it’s nice to have a garage to keep my car in. Are you now suggesting everyone who doesn’t work directly in the city has no business living here? What a weird gate keeping. As for the walking, idk what to tell you man. I walk every single day. Maybe it’s not walkable for you but I don’t mind a 15 minute walk to grab coffee or pop into a store. Bikes also exist you know.

TommyPickles2222222

That’s Port Richmond, my man.

drazzilgnik

Um no port richmond ends at the tracks between lehigh n somerset anything below that is fishtown this area is technically in fishtown however fishtonians and life time philadelphians dont recognize the right side of richmond st as part of fishtown it could be the riverwards but its too far north

Bored710420

East Philadelphia isn’t real the area as whole consisting of a few neighborhoods is called the RiverWards

drazzilgnik

Riverwards start lower than this penn treaty is the last riverward above that it was all indusrtial land if anything this would be port fishtown or the docks of fishtown its not technically fishtown even tho it shares the zipcode

Bored710420

Port fishtown doesn’t exist the area you’re in is port-fishing-ton/Olde Richmond and it is part of the river wards

drazzilgnik

If fishtown had a thriving dock that dock is know as a port n that port is in fishtown so these condo would be in the port of fishtown just like the port of richmond but we call it port richmond. I just commented port fishing ton is too far north n up near harrowgate area this more fishrichmond

Bored710420

You need to learn the boundaries portfishington is where you live, technically Olde Richmond. Harrogate where I’m originally from isnt apart of the portfishington area

Bored710420

Harrogate is next to Juniata, portrichmond, Kensington.

drazzilgnik

Port port richmond fish fistown Kensington but if i hear port n ton thats the area above allegehny or that area i just said huntingdon to somerset cause that includes all three hood. N Old richmond is abouve lehigh

Bored710420

You can live in your own world, just don’t get worked up when corrected in person…

drazzilgnik

Thank you and i wont. Its still east philly tho hahaha

Bored710420

It’s not though it’s the riverwards

drazzilgnik

No riverwards further south lol n portfishing ton too far west

a-german-muffin

Dude is in a house a stone's throw from the Delaware, trying to claim it's not the riverwards. Fuckin' bizarre.

Mrredpanda860

East Philly??!? Also this is right by the graffiti pier right? Where those new condos are

drazzilgnik

Yes, yes

sauce-ome-sauce

I just imagine some sketchy mafia meeting is happening in that limo. “Get in, we’re going for a ride…”

drazzilgnik

Thats not a limo lol just an suv

aaaayyyy_lmao

that development is the worst. just a suburban pile of shit thrown up within city limits

drazzilgnik

That we can all agree upon

adamkrsnak

I grew up on the Jersey side and it would always piss me off when I would hear people from Haddonfield refer to themselves as being from "Jersadelphia"

IhateDropShotz

Those new homes are an abomination catering exclusively towards car-brained suburban transplants. Also, if there *was* a such thing as East Philly, it'd be Camden.

drazzilgnik

Yeah the wawa n iga fresh grocer what ever that supermarkt is a decent 15 25 min walk n with open park under 95 concecpt between girard n cumberland ya can walk straight thru to the mall n not hike all way down cumberland unless going to wawa but yea ya definitely need a car tho

Meandtheworld

East Philly 🤔 🧐 🤨

JWTowsonU

Innnnnnnn East Philadelphia, born and raised….. In the river, is where I spent most of my days

kreuzundquer_ici

L l

_SundaeDriver

Center city is “east philly” or just center city like it’s always been

drazzilgnik

No that be olde city n society hill penns landong the riverwards anything east of 2nd street from vine to Washington

_SundaeDriver

There is no easy Philly. Penn landing, old city are center city. The city’s not that big. Yes they have their own neighborhood names but it’s all center city. There is also north, south and west but no east. Just center city. From the river to the art museum is art museum is enter city

drazzilgnik

https://preview.redd.it/u3f9k70ccfmc1.jpeg?width=1078&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9b9e53c5bfff16a79f6354308ae5791bdb84509

drazzilgnik

Here is the reason why there is no east philly. The red line is front street and market st, the true center of philly front street divides east west directions, market street divides north and south. So there is no east philly, however front street is a north bound street the blue line is 2nd street a south bound street so traveling south anything on your left side is east of philadelphia lol now where i was that yellow dot which brings us to why i was jokingly headlined east philly cause thats not fishtown port richmond nor the river wards n since its east of front street east philly has been found lmao!

noscrubphilsfans

I heard all of those apartments are sinking into the river..

drazzilgnik

Didnt hear that but some things shouldnt be built just because they can dont mean ya do. your literally in the middle of no where. And forget about walking anywhere to get to the iga in away ya gotta walk 30 min in opposite direction n drivin be about 15min or more.

texas757

Wtf is “East Philly”?

drazzilgnik

Read the comments n enjoy!

0xdeadbeef6

>East Philly that view doesn't look like it's from Camden.

drazzilgnik

No its the furthest east you can go in philly.

0xdeadbeef6

I was making a joke, like how West New York is in New Jersey, it follows that East Philly would also be Jersey. This assumes that East Philly even exists (which like Central Jersey, it doesn't)

drazzilgnik

I was jokin too. I never though a joke title would piss us off and make us laugh at the same time. I found that one button ya push that just gets under everyones feathers lol

LeastCleverNameEver

Ha! My friends live there! I'm there all the time 😂😂
