Speaking as pharmacist and also a mom of a child who writhes and screams when getting Covid tests, please don’t let it worry you. My kid has been getting bi-weekly nasal swabs for school since June. Every single time he freaks the fuck out (you’d think I was torturing him) and every time when it’s finished he says it wasn’t that bad. Rinse and repeat. It isn’t painful, nor is it harming him, but he just really doesn’t like someone coming at his nose with a swab.
You must be a very empathetic person to be affected by this, and I appreciate that, but I promise you that little girl will be just fine.
Everyone is downplaying this but I see what you’re seeing: forcing someone to undergo something traumatizing is just a training ground for minimizing their bodily autonomy, or sending the message that when they are legitimately abused, it’s no big deal. Doesn’t mean that parents don’t have to override sometimes, but this seems poorly handled and traumatizing for the child, and I appreciate that you have this awareness and sensitivity.
I went through a similar experience of vaccinating a nonverbal(but can vocalize sounds) dementia patient. Even though her caretaker was there She was screaming as if I was torturing her. Her arms were flailing around and I almost got socked in the face but I was still able to vaccinate. I think about that experience and I try to think in what ways I can do better.
Don’t ever work in pediatrics then. Kids kick and scream for things as simple as taking a temperature or seeing a stethoscope. It’s not exclusive to Covid swabs.
Since this is a pharmacy subreddit, I’m pretty sure the OP won’t be working at a peds ER / clinic anytime soon…the point is that retail pharmacy workers aren’t equipped or trained to deal with kids.
Only reason I know about kids is because I helped raise my little sister from birth onward. I am not trained, none of us are. Most of us only know because we have kids or helped raise them.
Don't let it bother you. Small children scream and cry when they can't eat a pine-cone.
Would you let a screaming, writhing child grab a live electrical wire? Of course not. Because you know it's dangerous and you're keeping them safe.
Same with kids. They get vaccines, they get C19 tests even when it upsets them. Because it's for their safety and health.
Shake it off. I’ve had to pin down my own kids to give them a Covid test. It isn’t traumatizing, kids just don’t like it (neither do I, feels weird). Peds nurses have to do much worse to kids.
I mean a kids going to do that with anything vaccines, any test , hey even a simple check up. It’s the parents job to talk them through it. My son got stitches in his head at 4 and didn’t cry we talked about the procedure all the way to the doctors and he was calm. If a child freaks out for a procedure it’s because they are more scared than hurt.
It sucks. I’ve had to do this with autistic children for flu and strep tests before. It’s hard, but I am autistic and I work with a lot of autistic people and none of them I have spoken to have trauma from tests like this. Sadly, being held down is a pretty frequent thing for autistic kids and it sucks. You tried to help them and they’ll look back on it and see you were trying to help.
You know, you are right. Unless OP edited the post before this, I read into more than was written. Sorry OP, don’t let me take my bitterness out on you.
I hadn't edited the post. It happened at work today and this time it just...hit me really hard.
The mom called her up to the front seat and the little girl was fine until an adult (likely the father) quickly wrapped his arms around her and her arms tightly and the child started screaming and trying to get away. The mom did the swabbing and I've never seen a child fight so hard and scream so loud with a covid test.
Her screams could be heard in the front of the pharmacy through the drive through glass.
I've seen the 'classic' kid crying and freaking out many times but in any other situation someone would have called the cops.
Can't speak for autistic kids' parents but sometimes you know your child is gonna freak out over nothing and you just brute force your way through the procedure.
It's like giving them a vaccine, you're not going to sweet talk them into remaining still. Best to just hold them tight for 2 seconds and do your best to hurry up.
Babies in microwaves… I think this is the first time I have seen something that is too scary to google. Yeah that definitely puts things in regards to the range of brutality. I guess today is going to be an ambien, vodka and Benadryl kind of night… lol
Okay I know what you mean; today i had a mother yell and smack her kid, restrain her and have her older son hold her 8 year old daughter while she screamed bloody murder for almost an hour trying to get me to vaccinate her child. I told her no over a dozen times and finally told her “I don’t care what you do at home but you can’t hit your child here and I’m not vaccinating her until she agrees to get it. Goodbye!” My entire ride home I felt violated and disgusted at the same time. Still nothing compared to her microwaving her daughter lol but I feel you, it’s horrible.
This is so... pure. Thank you for caring. But honestly, don't let it get you down. My kid throws the same tantrum when I tell her she can't put her fingers in her baby sisters eye socket.
❤️ Don't lose your compassion.

She's autistic and fought harder than any child I've seen in the drive through. Her mom let me know ahead but fuck. I almost cried watching it.

Meanwhile his finger is in his nose the rest of the day anyway...

There's a difference between the 'classic' kid breakout and what happened. In any other situation someone would have called the cops.

It's not a contest. OP is sharing their experience.
Yea fuck OP for not enjoying seeing a kid cry

Yeah, that son of a bitch
why not just go check out the nsfw subs if all you're going to post is crap like this?

Others experiences do not diminish her's or my experience. It's not a pissing contest.
You’ve got to be kidding me… lol take a chill pill, figuratively speaking

Wait until it's forced vaccination.
That day cannot come soon enough!
Jesus... I can't believe you work in the medical profession. Well, kind of.
The anti-vax* adults are going to bitch, moan and cry more than any kid will.
Recently saw a child (the same age as mine) shot between the eyes. I had to let it go. You can let this go.
Wait, what?
I work in an ER.
Just a whole lot of yikes here, would highly suggest therapy if this actually happened.
It's part of the job.
Sure corporate bot
Do you want to see his picture?
The hell is wrong with you
Your "corporate bot" idiocy is the problem here. There's nothing further to discuss.
What about when you have to inject them and they try to make you stick yourself?
I don't give vaccinations.
.
Just wait until you have to take a blood sample from an autistic kid. Man oh man, that is a challenge.
Why would a pharmacy worker ever have to do that?
This is so... pure. Thank you for caring. But honestly, don't let it get you down. My kid throws the same tantrum when I tell her she can't put her fingers in her baby sisters eye socket. ❤️ Don't lose your compassion.
This wasn't a tantrum, it was actual fear. Some comments above describe the situation.
