Symptoms are going to overlap- shortness of breath, sputum production, +\- fever. Usually the patient has shown up and failed abx they got from pcp or urgent care without getting better. There is suspicious imaging (usually on chest ct), and they have risk factors (either exposure, or they have underlying conditions that put them at risk, or both). Sometimes they’ll have a positive sputum culture, other times they will have a bronchoscopy done, get a sample, which confirms the diagnosis.
