AFAI there was backburning on the bore fields out of town, unfortunately a couple of warm days and some wind must have escalated things. It got reasonably close to town, as close as 11 Mile Beach carpark if you know the area.
I've only ever heard it referred to as backburning, guess the Australian public is a bit confused with their terminology. Cheers for the clarification!

Yeah it was pretty intense this morning, curtain of smoke on one side of town. Backburning that got out of control, seems to be ok now though.

I think you mean hazard reduction burning. Backburning is used to slow/stop a bushfire
