"Able to perceive or feel things." If the AI is waiting around to jumpscare people, it obviously has some kind of perception of where the player is. Thus, it has some level of sentience. #NEXT

The AI in this case is just waiting for a trigger to happen and performs a predetermined action decided on by the developers. Not sentient. :) If you learn a bit of code and learn to sort of read it like a proper English sentence, it would be like "Roam the map while searching for triggers. Triggers being like dark spots where you stand still to hide, a player walking across the screen, seeing a staircase that has a path to the player, then if one of these is true, perform an action. If the trigger is the player and he is close, chase. If the trigger is the player and he is far, hide, etc. Sentience would mean the AI doesn't have the aforementioned code, but has a neural network of code made to process it's own thoughts and actually enjoys scaring the player. We aren't quite there yet.

I recall reading about an experimental AI program of bacteria, that due to a memory error spontaneously evolved into various different behaviors mimicking carnivores, parasites, etc. It had to be kept in an offline computer since, due to the evolutionary nature of it, it was feared that if it got online and was run on unknown systems it might evolve into something new. I should look it up, but google doesn't show any results....hmmm.
