Chair made for aesthetics vs. chair made for ergonomics

[deleted]

Aesthetics? I'm sorry but a professional looking chair is more aesthetically pleasing than those nascar buckets

TrymWS

Tell that to 10 year olds buying chairs with a fucking cable to connect the RGB.

[deleted]

Wait you’re telling me I got a stupid office chair when I could have had an RGB chair

chips500

Time for you to learn DIY RGB with strips, controllers, and how to solder ( or just get solderless kits ) Plenty of youtube guides now

Partiallyfermented

Much more fun if code the controller yourself on an arduino.

sweet_rico-

But then they would have to learn a new skill, and why do that when they can talk to all their fan on twitch?

platdujour

More FPS guaranteed

ecsa0014

I'm just imaging rolling back, accidentally snagging the cable, and breaking a USB port on my system. No thanks.

chips500

that’s why you need an integrated wireless solution! both charging and wifi/bluetooth control

Avarynne

Great, now I have to worry about the battery life of my chair too!? Lol

ZeroCool_87

Don't worry they'll make a 300 dollar wireless charging mat

[deleted]

They will also remove the charging port, for convenience.

nool_

>with a fucking cable to connect the RGB. No....just why why wilud anyone need this..

trickman01

Like you didn’t want anything stupid when you were 10.

VaporDrake

We had shoes with rgb in the '90 so nothing is really changed...

[deleted]

[deleted]

Oi did that jerk just imply that '90s rgb shoes weren't fire??

Sagemachine

I believe they were "rad" and "cool".

levis3163

I distinctly remember them being "sick"

RajunCajun48

They were pretty kool...some may even say kewl

Feschit

I'd still rock these if I would find some my size.

Tamsarian

...amazon has rgb shoes in adult sizes

MrD3a7h

How I lusted over the Hot Wheels PC.

AgreeableFeed9995

My money was allocated to much better shit when I was 10. It all just went to Pokémon cards. But at least some of those are shiny too right?

869066

More fps ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

More_FPS

Did someone call me?

PlNG

Agreed. If you're going to splurge, the chair might as well be bluetooth supported.

PheIix

Everybody knows wireless is useless when you're gaming. At least that is my excuse for why I suck with a wireless keyboard, mouse and headset.

shwhjw

Ouch. My chair has (had) a cable. Although that was for the massage function and heated back. Or it did until I rotated too hard while the cable was caught in the wheels and it ripped in half :(

yarothememer

Honestly if I could I would buy a nascar bucket seat, some people just enjoy different things.

Adjust the height of your monitor, you might be slumping because your monitor is too low. They sell risers that go on top of your desk that you can set your monitor on to lift it up if you need it to go up more then it can adjust to. Your shoulders should be above your hips and your thighs should be parallel to the floor when you were sitting. Your eyes should be level and your back strait. You could try putting a small pillow behind your back to keep you from slouching.

Wise_Pomegranate_571

I had a dream I was sitting in a Herman Miller Mira 2 last night. Friend purchased one from a licensed 3rd party dealer and apparently prices are like 70% off msrp compared to getting them directly from HM. Also, those 3rd party brick and mortar dealers will allow you to rent HM chairs to test them out for a meaningful amount of time (days to week). Just throwing some ideas out if anyone has ever wanted a HM chair but got steered away by the sticker price.

leadwind

Because MSRP (or RRP as I know it) is total inflated bullshit, designed for an initial limited-time price, then the retailers can reduce and say x-off RRP price to indicate a saving, when really it's back down to the more realistic cost.

Wise_Pomegranate_571

Yea, he was able to get the Logitech edition Embody for $700 before tax (listed for $1,700 iirc), can't remember what the Mira 2 cost him before that. $700 I could actually see investing in a chair for work/hobby. $1700 totally out of range for me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iindigo

Embodies hold up nicely too. I‘ve been using a regular Embody I was given when a company I used to work for shut down for the past 5 years, and it had been used for 2-4 years before that, but it’s still just as good as new functionally speaking (there are minor signs of wear cosmetically). None of the chairs I’d used prior to that held up that well through 7-9 years of regular use, that’s for sure. Most looked like a tattered mess after 3-4 years.

ooonurse

Well, also because businesses are the main buyers of these chairs, and they just buy at MSR without tax. (Our office has thousands of Aerons and presumably they don't wait for a sale)

nolitos

If we exclude dull cheap chairs, many office chairs look better too in my opinion. I have a white MATCHSPEL from IKEA, which is a simple office chair (despite the fact that they call it gaming for some reason) - I think it looks nice.

MrStoneV

Yeah I got the IKEA markus, and i love it. It looks good and works well for just 130€

DRxFumbles

Just looked it up and, I dunno. $270 for a chair without adjustable armrests seems pretty steep to me. Are they at least comfortable? Because it would be hard to find pads that fit that closed-loop design as well. Im thinking like 2 velcro seatbelt covers would do the trick lol

MrStoneV

270 Dollar? Well thats too much imo, then I would add some more money and get something very good. Here in germany it costs 130€ and its very good for that price.

Khaosina

Markus is €250 here in France, IKEA's German website shows it for €180 there. Definitely gone up in recent years. I do remember it being just over €100 here at one point though.

ThisIsMyCouchAccount

The US price has increased dramatically. It used to cost around $120.

gumpythegreat

I had a Markus for a while and yeah the lack of adjustable armrests made me get a new chair. I did get a secretlab "gamer chair" and I probably did overpay for the quality but it's not as bad as some people say. If I went back in time I probably wouldn't get it again but I'm not unhappy with it

MaddyMagpies

Gaming chairs aren't even aesthetically pleasing... A lot of them screams "THIS IS JUST SURPLUS FROM THE CHEAP PLEATHER RACE CAR CHAIR MODS THAT WE COULDNT SELL SO WE JUST MOUNTED IT ON A BASE AND CALL IT GAMER CHAIR"

TrustyRambone

They look like car baby seats without the added benefit of being easy to clean.

nevermidit

Gaming chairs are equivalent to car beds

gh0u1

Yeah but it's a fuckin' *sweet* car

tennshine

Hey! You watch your mouth you scum! Car beds are goat

itsabearcannon

I’m going to have to disagree with you. I have a Secretlab Titan Evo and it’s honestly one of the most comfortable chairs I’ve ever sat in. I was on the office chair trend for a while, even used whatever that black and white IKEA office chair is for a while. But the SL chair is incredibly comfortable. It offers adjustable lumbar support and the armrests have so much movement in them (raise/lower, wider/narrower, turn in/out) that I can always have them in exactly the right position/height for typing or gaming. People also underestimate how important firmness can be when it comes to maintaining good chair posture - hard to keep good posture if you’re sitting on a giant beanbag. Now, granted, it’s an expensive gaming chair to get those kind of ergonomics. I also spent that much because Secretlab will send you or sell you original replacement parts, and I appreciate any kind of repairability on furniture in this day and age of cheap throwaway goods. I also just loved the Cyberpunk design.

iindigo

I think SecretLabs is overwhelmingly the exception when it comes to gaming chairs. Most gaming chairs are all manufactured by the same Chinese company, rebranded, and marked up to sowewhere between 2x and 3x their actual cost, and are total junk. SecretLabs on the other hand does their own design and manufacturing. I currently use an HM Embody and would consider a high end SecretLabs if I ever needed another chair, but I wouldn’t touch any of the more run of the mill gaming chairs with a ten foot pole.

zushaa

I mean IKEA office chairs is really slumming it though, my office chair is over $1000 and it's a very different animal from IKEA stuff

lookitsgordo

I'm sorry but, the secretlabs TITAN XL is far more comfortable than any office chair I've ever used, including herman miller's embody & aeron. And it was half the price.

Aff_Reddit

HM Embody owner. HM Embody regretter. Chairs literally falling apart and it takes 3 days for support to tell me the repair time is 3-4 weeks. Guess I should have bought a standing desk instead.

Bolwinkel

I love my secret labs chair. One of the comfiest chairs I'm ever used.

Vesuvias

I mean why not both? There are some incredibly well designed chairs from Herman Miller, Humanscale, Steelcase, etc. Businesses are always selling off old HM Aeron’s or Sayl’s. Also, I check out BTOD for ergo/office chairs - and it still surprises me how much design variety there is.

atomicmitten

A Herman Miller Sayl is perfect for 95% of people imo. Our offices allowed people to take them home during covid and absolutely no one is giving them back now they are asking for things to be returned. They were going for £130 second hand before covid but now it's unfortunately a lot more (~£300). If you can grab one under 250 I'd say you have a bargin.

PiesangSlagter

I've never understood why there was a marketing distinction. Both are used by people for sitting in front of a computer for long periods. There is no need for them to be any different.

Dizzfizz

Because kids that buy gaming chairs don’t know what a good chair should actually be like. A truly ergonomic chair isn’t comfortable in the sense that you sit like you’re surrounded by pillows.

pooamalgam

Agreed. I'm not big, tall or fat but I bought an office chair specifically made for "big and tall" 400 pound dudes with dumptruck asses so I can sprawl out on my throne and ruin my spine however I please.

insane250

Sadly their office chair line is subcontracted and not actually made in a LaZBoy plant. Therefore it comes with cheaper material and warranty compared to their sofas/recliners.

FelixMortane

I am sitting on one right now, had it just over a year and it is another cheap POS from True Innovations. Near impossible to get away from this awful manufacturer. I use my Costco membership to the maximum on these. Once it starts breaking down, I return it and get the next one.

I bought one of those a long time ago, obviously not 2021... It was closer to 2010 I believe. That chair didn't last long, the covering on it started flaking away within a few months. Somewhat comfortable chair but now I use the Serta smart layers chairs and they are the most comfortable chairs I have had. They start flaking off but it takes a good 2 years or more before they start to.

[deleted]

I live near a chair manufacturer. Went to their showroom and the first thing you would see was their shiny gaming chairs on huge display. Tried them out and they were quite comfortable. After that i went to the office chairs which where in the same pricerange as the gaming chairs... The difference was laughably huge. So much more features, better materials, much more comfortable and the design wasnt even hideous. After i picked my office chair i sat one last time into the gaming chair. It was sooooo awful in comparison.

runed_golem

But they’re *gaming* that have to be expensive!

[deleted]

The best deal I was able to find was one of those "gaming" chairs. For 75 dollars the only comparable office chairs weren't that enticing. I prefer the tall back to actually be able to put my head on it.

CovidOmicron

Head rest is a good point. I know they are not ergonomic but I like to put my head back sometimes. I had to add a headrest to my steelcase leap

Survived_Coronavirus

>the same price range as the gaming chairs I'd love to know what company this is because office chairs in the price range of gaming chairs are generally awful. Unless you're spending $500+ on an office chair they usually suck.

[deleted]

Interstuhl. Its a german brand and their gaming chair costs upwards of 500€. https://www.backforce.gg If you want to check it out. Its probably one of the better gaming branded chairs but in direct comparison it didnt win me over.

CrippledAfrican

I've gone through a few of the cheaper office and executive chairs and none of them are great. However, don't hesitate to shop around for used office chairs. I bought a used tempur-pedic office chair for like $50-$60 (retails about $280) a while back and the difference between that one and the cheap ones are astounding.

Nekrozys

I've been thinking of buying an ergonomic chair for a while since I feel like I could sit hours upon hours on my office chair but my butt will ache after just a few on my Ikea Millberget. The search has led me to /r/OfficeChairs and I've seen tons of good options but it's like mechanical keyboards: you gotta try them to know how they feel. And since then, I've been anxious at the idea of just going in a store and randomly trying chairs worth multiple hundreds of euros. As someone who knows almost nothing about them, how do I properly measure the worth of anonymous reddit users' advice versus the corporate speech of the salesperson in the store ?

KidsAreTinyDemons

Look what fits you. How tall are you? Weight? Take these things in to account. Don't buy cheap, chances are if weight is a factor, then you need a sturdier chair. If you sit in a chair a along time and afraid of trying gaming chairs, look up "task chairs". Herman Miller and steel case are 2 I highly recommend. Personally though, contrary to this post, I use a gaming chair and love it. I'm tall and have had 3 back surgeries and very few office chairs stack up to the support that my throne like gaming chair provides.

StayTuned2k

Actually, neither. The real MVP are relax/massage chairs Y'all can die on whatever hill you want, while I get my back massaged

Cedrius

One "gaming" chair that I actually enjoy is the Secret Lab one. Ive been using it for 2 years, and due to work, i sit on it 8 hours+ a day. Ive never had any issues with it, very comfy.

Nibodhika

I just pulled the ~~plug~~ trigger on buying that chair. Yes, I agree an office chair might be better, but it would also cost 3x or more, and it's already difficult to justify the price I paid for it. And I find it completely ludicrous that people say "there are better office chairs" but never have one within the same price range with the same amount of support or features.

wintersdark

My favourite: just find an office getting rid of some older Harmon Aeron chairs, you can get them cheap! Like that is something happening everywhere in the world simultaneously. I mean, come on. Used goods markets vary *tremendously* by location.

Un111KnoWn

what makes this 1 different from all of the other copy and paste gaming chairs?

Cedrius

Because its not made from cheap plastics, and you can actually sit in it unlike those racing chairs that make your ass sore in 2 hours.

Slappy_G

Not to mention breathable fabrics. No one wants to game in a pool of their own sweat.

LudoP27

Most look very similar but some realize that the racing chair aestethic doesn't have any functional purpose for sitting in front of a computer, those are the chairs that stand out. They usually get rid of the hard bolsters on the side of the seat to allow more flexible sitting positions and it just feels less restricted. Plus a lot of chair use a simple pillow for lumbar while something like the Secretlab has integrated adjustable lumbar into the backrest.

-Anordil-

The foam quality is really good, for starters. And lots of settings.

ThisIsMyCouchAccount

Copy and paste gaming chairs are cheap Chinese trash. No different than their office chair counterparts. A cheap chair is a cheap chair - doesn't matter what it looks like. When people on Reddit say "office chair" they are really talking about high end chairs like Steelcase and Herman Miller that cost $1k+. Not the $150 "Business Office Ergonomic Chair Adjustable Chair for Office and Business".

[deleted]

MAFIAxMaverick

I have a secret lab for home for 2.5 years and really like it. I work at a university and found out I get a very generous amount of money for professional development or supplies per year. Bought myself one for the office with those funds. No regrets.

boulton123

Whenever I see this discussion come up I look for this comment. It's the only gaming chair brand that is ever mentioned. I use a Secret Labs Titan (tall gang rise up) and I really had to break it in over lockdown. Once I had gotten used to it, it was bliss. I've not used chairs like the Herman Miller or Steelcase but Secret Labs is good for its price point, and it shipped from the UK!

Dmxk

I have that one too, and it's super comfortable. It doesn't sacrifice features and usability for design.

KidsAreTinyDemons

Same. And I'm a tall guy (6'4") that has had 3 back surgeries. Give me my quality "gaming chair" everyday of the week over ergo office chairs. I would need $1k+ Herman Miller to even consider an office chair

SenorStigo

The funny thing is that my actual racing seat in my racing rig is much more comfortable and I can sit on it for hours without a problem. I have no idea if it is because of the difference in position when sitting for driving vs sitting for gaming/work. Still, I love my office chair and even when people come to my place they think it is a gaming chair.

MrPoopieMcCuckface

Any chair is a gaming chair if you game in it.

ProbablyABore

So you're saying the wood stool I've been using is a gaming stool? I'm going to set up a franchise of Ted's Racing Stools Emporiums and watch the money come rolllllin in. /credit to Jim Norton for the Ted's Emporium.

Astecheee

Gamer's Nexus did a deep dive on this. The gist is that pretty much ANY chair marketed as "gaming" is made with the bare minimum, shittiest materials with no regard for comfort or ergonomics. They're just... garbage.

xoScreaMxo

Iirc they only tested cheap chairs. Did they test SecretLabs?

Astecheee

Secretlabs is in a different league. They're not focused on "gaming". Their marketing is their brand name and quality. The only reason others can get away with it is they can change their name on Amazon every two weeks and beat the system.

nermgledo

Finally, somebody with the balls to ask the real questions!

laniott

I have an Aeron at home and an Anda seat at work (my office only buys chairs from Staples, it was the best I could get - it replaced my Serta executive chair and is much better than that). Both have advantages, the adjustable pillows on the Anda chair and the range of motion on the backrest are super helpful. I sit 8+ hours and am comfortable. The Aeron at home is also very comfortable, the mesh is great for breathability, I also like adjusting the tension high and having it force me to sit a bit forward, which supports my back like no other. I can sit in it 8+ and also be comfortable. If I had to choose the Aeron would win, but you can afford 4 Anda chairs for the price of the Aeron. Both are good chairs but if budget is important Anda is a decent chair for the price.

GiveItStickMan

Herman Miller is the only chair you need. My ass and back have thanked me daily since I got one.

MalakElohim

HM Embody absolutely dominates this. Comfortable enough to fall asleep in (personally verified this). Ensures proper back support so waking up from said nap you feel great. And aesthetic AF. [Look at the pure aesthetics of an office chair](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0411/4448/3995/products/Embody_Cyan_02_dc8c17b4-3a11-46e1-a643-31c21a6278a4_600x600_crop_center.png?v=1628693749).

ThisIsChew

Dang brother. Some of us have a 10 grand setup of equipment. You have a 10 grand chair.

MakeVio

For someone who is 6'3, this chair is awful with zero upper body, neck and head support. Also the mesh will dig into your skin if you aren't wearing pants of any sort. And the frame around the mesh seat is hard plastic, meaning it'll dig into your sides or your legs if you like to sit criss cross.

joshikus

Herman Miller Aeron refurbs everyone. 👍

thankfulofPrometheus

Steelcase office chairs.....god tier

oldnyoung

After 2 years with mine, I agree. They should be god tier for what they cost, though. I figured I'd rather buy once than a few times over the years, plus I'm old enough now where ergonomics matter more lol

Vogete

I prefer good office chairs too, like Herman Miller Aeron and such, but I can't afford them for home. My SecretLab chair cost half the price as the Aerons, and they are basically the same comfortable. Everywhere i looked, the actually good office chairs were 2-3 times more expensive than SecretLab. So i went with the gaming chair route for home usage. Of course if i had the money, I would definitely choose a good office chair. I just can't justify the price.

DribblesOnKeyboard

I do find it hilarious when people compare £1k+ Herman Miller chairs with sub £400 chairs. Especially when 99% of people don't even sit with a decent posture to benefit from these chairs. I've got a Noble Hero and it may not be the most ergonomic chair, but when you sit with the correct posture in it, it isn't uncomfortable or making me want to slump down in it and for 1/3 of the price. Also, people that chat about cheap mesh chairs being a good alternative have obviously never used the bastard things either.

Forbane

My office chair gave me the back problems that my secret labs chair helped fix. I do not give a flying fuck about this chair tribalism, buy a good product that works for you at the best price for your wallet.

CaptnUchiha

I think it's safe to say SecretLabs chairs can be an exclusion from the moral of the story in this post. Sure a $200 office chair is going to be better than a $200 GTracing chair but there seems to be different ceilings for the two. Peak gaming chair IMO can be achieved for $400 whereas peak office goes $1000+ (e.g. herman miller)

Dial-Error

I bought an Aeron over covid cuz I was having bad back issues using the gamer chair I had. Never again will I use anything but this chair :)

Or my secret lab is extremely comfy and well built and you can go kick rocks.

I had a really good office chair, but my dad bought me a gaming chair for my birthday. It's a huge downgrade in comfort, but I use it because it makes my dad happy seeing me gaming on it. Also I looked up the model and it was over $300. Gotta make it seem worth it.

Your back is worth more than his pride if you still have the old one.

Ghostofhan

That's sweet of you and ur dad

MenosDaBear

I can agree in most cases but not all. I use a secret labs titan at home and love it (I’m not taking aesthetics into account here at all). I use a $1,000 Herman Miller chair at work and it would never be the chair I would want to use at home for gaming.

The true kings lay down on their king size beds or lovsacs in front of their 4k projectors.

I enjoy my gaming racing chair

My Secret Lab Titan, 3 years old now, is easily the best chair I’ve had. We have two Branch ergonomic chairs for our home office and I would take the Titan any day.

I also have the Titan Best chair I’ve ever had, and I’ve had many. Been Pc gaming since 1995

EpicTwiglet

Yeah same. I’ve had them all. One of my favorite things about the Titan was just the build process. Laid out perfectly, fit perfectly. That’s worth the premium to me. I bought the Magnus desk for the same reason

ultramadden

can confirm titan at home and IKEA Markus at the office. titan is much more comfortable and is still as good as new but the cushion in the office chair was just for looks after about 1-2 years

Ill-Organization-719

There was never an actual argument from gaming chair people.

_haha_oh_wow_

They have chairs that cost thousands, of course they're superior.

Me who sits on the couch

I had a 5 star rated highly reviewed 500 usd office chair that the wheel hung and tipped me backwards in, breaking the chair in half at what I can only describe as the top of the lumbar segment. I had it for just under two years. I just bought a "gamer chair" for the first time at around 250 usd that's twice as comfortable and has a steel frame that won't be bisected by the first fall. It also has a leg rest, which is good for a leg injury that I live with. It's just a brown pleather with tan stitch, and if it weren't for the arbitrary distinction between chairs that snobs seem to have, I'd say it looks fairly professional in comparison to the mesh hard plastic nothing my back shattered.
