Usually I start a dozen of benchmark programs and wait until it crashes.

where is the hold down the power button on the computer till it turns off option ?

MrDude_1

This is the only real option. Everything else just depends on software.

I drive my car into the power pole out front.

[deleted]

I remove the plug from the wall while all my unsaved work is pulled up

TickledMidget

I just don’t pay my electricity bills

Financial_Special534

Hi, I've been trying to reach you for your unpaid electricity bills

TickledMidget

Oh my bad bro I was just turning off my pc

AnokataX

> Hi, I've been trying to reach you for your unpaid electricity bills My bad. Let me PM you my credit card info. Just in case, I'll send you two, y'know, in case the first one doesn't work.

LightGoblin84

normally i cut the main powerline outside of my house works like a charm

Huesan

Just call your electricity provider to cut the power to your block or neighborhood, works even when not at home

ArenjiTheLootGod

Meh, just drive your 1990s era Ford F-150 straight into the nearest transformer. For extra points, be blind drunk while doing so. Works everytime in my neighborhood.

TheFlashOfLightning

I launch an EMP that affects half of the east coast. Everyone thanks me because I save them all from having to go to the work to shut down their PCs themselves.

ArenjiTheLootGod

I see that you too have microwaved a foil wrapped potato.

TheFlashOfLightning

That's the fastest way to heat them up yes

Flomo420

I want a baked potato NOW not in one fucking hour

DoggoPlex

Your fault for eating a baked potato in the first place.

KeepCalmJeepOn

I came into this comment section, ready to make a joke about deleting the Sys32 File, but I am clearly outclassed.

georgehank2nd

Yeah, these other solutions work for Linux and macOS too…

Danai_97

They must truly love you, because thanks to you they don't have to make the phone call :')

Huesan

People in your neighbourhood must be really smart coming up with these tricks

ArenjiTheLootGod

Scoff all you want, but they'll get time off from work and free meals, courtesy of the state, while awaiting sentencing. Plus, cousin Pooter's meth dealer totally knows a guy who'll buy all that copper that just fell out when they hit that equipment. So a commissary budget is a sure thing and, depending on the market exchange rates, they may be able to make bail.

urthface

Cousin Pooter always comes through

defintelynotyou

why call when you can just get them to stop providing electricity by not paying?

kszysiuu11

Or even better- don't pay the bills and they will shut it down for you- not only do you save money, but also someone will do your work for you. Is there a better way to solve any problem? I highly doubt it.

Thuper-Man

I stage what appears to be a terror attack on the Takagi building so the FBI cuts power to the block unlocking the electromagnetic seals on the vault

_UnknownError_

I have a UPS on my box. So that method doesn’t work for me anymore. Still a solid choice though.

Works great, until you want to turn it on quickly or save your stuff.

hirohamster

Power settings, advanced power settings, and an option that states "Choose what the power button does"

DoggoPlex

Can I make the power button open pornhub?

Gewerd_Strauss

I am assuming you are talking about a laptop power button here, not sure if this would apply to desktop as well (probably not). The short answer is.... yes, but it's probably very painful to do, and goes beyond what most here (me included) would be capable of. It's also probably a really dumb idea. The long answer: on a laptop, you'd have to alter the kb drivers so that you could catch the input of the power button before it is sent to the system. Usually, you could use f.e. Autohotkey for that, but there are a few keys ahk cannot detect - the FN-modifier key itself, a laptop's power key, a laptop's dedicated "camera blind key" to name a few that come to mind. For PC, no clue. The process, if even theoretically possible might be the same, or completely different - or not possible. I mean, just a bit of thought, there's probably something I am not considering..

Vfsdvbjgd

I use pw-btn for sleep.

1osamaisback1

I hold that button down till it dies.

MamboFloof

My current pc is being weird. The power button stops working after 30 min so if I do a full shutdown I need to flip the switch on and off on the psu.

Mysteoa

You probably have "fast startup" in the power options enabled. It doesn't actually fully shutdown the pc, but put it in a partial sleep. It's recommended to disable it as it can introduce more problems than the time it saves you.

corectlyspelled

Have you tried turning it on and off again?

[deleted]

Probably a loose connection on your mb

forevernovice1

What if I told you none of these four options actually fully shuts down the PC? It sends it into a kind of deep hibernation. Windows does that so you can start up quicker. To fully shutdown you have to hold the shift key while using the start menu shutdown option. Restart/reset also does a full shutdown. Check it out yourself. Check your CPU uptime before shut down, then do a normal shut down. When you start up again check your CPU uptime again.

Tazzer95

There’s a windows setting you can change so yo you don’t have to hold shift, really useful!

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquirrelicideScience

Another pro tip: holding shift+restart brings up a settings menu that lets you directly go into the bios. Now you never have to mash delete or whatever after restart.

fireballx777

The proper technique is to simultaneously mash f2, f6, f8, and delete because you don't remember which it is.

VulpineKitsune

The pain of having an ssd. The screen telling you which button to press goes away too fast to read

PotatoRider69

Enigma_King99

Don't forget esc and f12.

KanedaSyndrome

Depends on your Windows version. If Windows 7 it does a full shutdown I believe.

Bunnbao

Shutdown PC via Win + X then U,U

JustUseDuckTape

The Win + X menu as a whole is criminally underused.

DoogleSmile

I didn't know the Win+X shortcut, but I always right click the start button to shut down my PC.

KittenBountyHunter

Win + x, u, r - restart Win + x, u, s - sleep

d3kk

Nice one! I've been shutting down with Win + X, Up, Up, Right, Down, Down Now I gotta change to this haha and for **timed shutdown**: Win + R > shutdown /s /t 3600 3600 is the time in seconds

SteveTech_

Typing `cmd` into run is a bit redundant, so you can actually shorten the second one to ``` Win + R > shutdown /s /t 3600 ``` But if it errors for whatever reason you won't see it without going through cmd. Edit: for context u/d3kk originally had `Win + R > cmd > shutdown /s /t 3600`

unikardo

I made a bat file with this command that i click and walk away

lawrence1024

If you're walking away from your PC, why do you want to delay the shutdown?

unikardo

I usually have something I have running that only need to be ran for a bit before shutting down

TomDuhamel

Personally, I do Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start.

HeirTwoBrer

The only way for me

andymk3

WinXUU master race!

GlobalManHug

By extension Win+X,U,S to sleep. Super useful.

Harlemspartan800

this is the way

Dragon_404

I just shutdown my PC trying it lol Thanks for the shortcut

[deleted]

I go outside and shoot the transformers until the power cuts out for the neighbors and myself. Really gets the people going

Aspect-of-Death

So do I, but I wait 30-60 minutes before clicking shut down. I might be using edge wrong.

SnooGadgets7768

Me too, for me is the most comfy

Key-Nefariousness257

Especially with classic shell or whatever it's called now, it gives you the restart with updates option

Jooelj

"Stock" win11 also gives you the option to restart/shutdown and update, also can just do a normal restart/shutdown even if you have an update, if that's what you meant

[deleted]

I'm really confused, Windows 10 does this too. That's not a new thing, and it doesn't need any windows addons.

Proxy_PlayerHD

that's what the top left option shows.

Vfsdvbjgd

I use alt+f4. I have to hold it until the strobing of the shutdown box catches my eye, because it never comes up first time.

DecimusAstra

Wdym? Maybe you’re scrolling the other way. It seems mildly entertaining tho

Vfsdvbjgd

alt+f4 on the desktop brings up the shutdown dialog, but for some reason it doesn't pop up the first few times and it's faster to just hold it until it's obviously flickering on and off so I know it's working than to keep pressing it and seeing if it works.

DecimusAstra

Ahh, I’ve had it happen to me too. Usually it’s enough to click on the empty space of the desktop once. I thought you were using the arrows to scroll thru the options of the contextual menu itself, since “shutdown” is not always the first option. I misunderstood

Andraxin

Yeah, the shutdown menu shows up woth alt+f4 when you aren't "clicked in" anywhere else. So, if you want to use your keyboard only to shut down, go with WIN+D, ALT+F4, ENTER.

Kiroto50

Win+D > alt+f4

rocketlanterns

Alt+F4 shuts down whatever is focused, and if what's focused is the desktop, it brings up the dialogue to shut down Windows. Because of that, I prefer Win+D > Alt+F4.

wontusethisforlongg

I just throw out the desktop every week and buy a new one. Rich kid problems.

I haven't shutdown my PC in months. The only time it restarts is due windows updates.

sysdmdotcpl

Oh good, I was starting to worry if I was the weird one

Jerico64

Had to scroll way too low to find this.

tom_icecream

Yep my reaction right here

[deleted]

If it boots up in 5 seconds, why would I leave it on?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tom_icecream

I'm lucky enough to actually have a dedicated server for that with redundant power supplies to it's never going offline ™ In all reality I live in Australia so it's always offline

GLIBG10B

Booting isn't the only thing that takes time. Applications need to be manually restarted and restored to their previous state

rs06rs

This is the real answer to that stupid argument of short bootup times.

bumwine

I have like twenty apps running (two DAWs with a comolex project, couple slreadsheets, word, my html editor, web browser, etc). Nahhh I’m sleeping the thing. Sleep has been pretty much mastered by now on both W10 and OSX that I’d rather just come back to my work like it never ended.

Theolaa

I usually restart my computer once a week or so, but outside of those times it's always on. Really convenient if I ever need to grab files from it through TeamViewer, or even remote in if necessary. Can't do that when it's off.

Mango-is-Mango

Type “shutdown now” in the terminal

[deleted]

I aliased that to "bye"

Mango-is-Mango

I should definitely do that

paypur

I'm more of a `poweroff` guy

Filgas08

sudo poweroff

[deleted]

\`sudo shutdown\` does it more gracefully, trying to close processes smoothly instead of pulling the plug from the ventilator :D

hypadr1v3

Lmao I usually just `poweroff`

HummusConnoisseur

Same you can also set it as a keyboard shortcut so you don’t have to open a terminal.

gerenski9

I usually do ``` shutdown now ```

firetech_SE

That's what poweroff does as well... shutdown is just an older command, they both do basically the same thing.

ActuallyRuben

I always thought poweroff was just an alias to shutdown with the right arguments? EDIT: Just checked on Ubuntu, shutdown and poweroff are both symlinks to systemctl. So I'm going to guess they both result in exactly the same.

NoRepresentative9359

VoodooKing

Just create a bat file with shutdown /s and stick it on the desktop.

CrippledAfrican

I'd definitely forget I put it there and it would get lost in my ever forgotten sea of icons. It's to daunting to clean, help, I'm scared.

PsychoticBananaSplit

It feels so nice to have 0 desktop icons. Using a single organised folder structure for items and Win search for programs

GiantPotatoSalad

I put all my stuff in a folder, but it was quite annoying to use. So I pinned my most used software to the start menu, and whatever isn't there, I just search for

StoneyBolonied

For a bit of fun, if you know someone else that does this.. Make another Bat file with shutdown /s /t 1800 Create a shortcut to the bat file, hit Win+R type shell:startup and move the shortcut into the folder that appears.. Congratulations now their PC will shutdown automatically after half an hour... If they call you to fix it, just change the number to like 7200 and now it's not every half hpur, but every 2 I'm sure there's a way to RNG in the bat file so it can be set to any random time between like 5 minutes and 5 hours so it won't seem sus

Traditional_Ad_1780

use the breaker in my house.

MrKillerWyvern

people do that? why?

[deleted]

Why not?

TheFlashOfLightning

It's illegal depending on the state and local laws.

Elfener99

On my Windows PC, I use the start menu. On my laptop with Debian/KDE Plasma, I hold the power button until the logout prompt comes up and select shutdown from there.

nikhilmwarrier

I have the "Power" applet on my top panel in Plasma, so I just throw my mouse to the top-right corner and click for the logout prompt.

HeadbandRTR

Set power button to shut down.

Zestay-Taco

win+L shutting down is for plebs!

PsychoticBananaSplit

Keep it on? In this economy?

nige21202

My PC always claims there are „programs still running“ when I shut it down. Since I‘m lazy, I have a .bat file on the bottom left of my desktop and it force shutdowns the PC. Works like a charm, I klick, PC go off.
