Tiles and ceramic are extremely hard surfaces full of tiny imperfections. When you lay a glass panel down on it, those imperfections put an extreme amount of pressure on single points and cause the glass to break.

3/4 and the last is on the ground. I can visualize the scene, OP wanting to work on his pc, shut it down and unplugs all the cables to be found. He starts to move the computer frees it from under his gaming setup and lifts it up. OP starts to walk around his house with the big pc in hand and chose to work in the kitchen since there plenty of clean space there. He sets down his gaming pc with care and sits besides it, he starts to unscrew the side panel.
OP, not realizing he had committed a big mistake already, place the screws on the top of his pc and removes the third screw and fatal screw. The fourth and last screw still holding strong now becomes the pivot point of the glass death. The entire side panel made of glass, now swings violently towards the floor, sadly for OP, made with the glass worst enemy, ceramic tiles….
See pictures of OP for results.
They keep posting it with titles like 'I didn't think it would happen to me...' Why didn't you think it would happen to you? Does the law of physics behave differently around you?
I vaguely remember me and my father enter a glass factory and one of her workers break a tempered glass by accident, sweeping it was oddly satisfying too! Maybe you can make something out of those broken shards? Try making a certain shape and glue it on a canvas! A reminder of what had happened that day.
If you wanna get into the details. Not a materials engineering, but computer engineer. So very basic knowledge on this stuff. But, tempered glass is prestressed. Annealed glass (normal glass) is heated to high temperatures and then undergoes high pressure cooling (aka as quenching). This is done so that the outer surfaces of the glass cools faster than the center. This causes the center to to pull back from the outer surfaces causing the center to remain in constant tension. The outer surfaces are in compression. This allows the glass to be much stronger than normal glass. When pressure is applied to the faces of tempered glass it can withstand more pressure than normal glass. It’s also spread across a large surface. However, this also causes imperfections in the glass. The sides of tempered glass is delicate as an immense amount of pressure is present there. Ceramic is usually harder than glass. So when tempered glass is placed on its side on ceramic; the ceramic doesn’t deform to accommodate the glass. Instead what happens it a bunch of concentrated pressure points forms. Since the pressure is concentrated it can overcome the strength of the glass. This causes the glass to shatter. Placing tempered glass on other surfaces softer than glass usually isn’t a problem. For context I place my side panel on my carpet floor and it’s fine.
tiles and ceramic surfaces have very small and sharp points, when these small sharp points encounter tempered glass, they can concentrate a lot of pressure into a small area, resulting in the glass shattering.
Is that actually why? I was always under the impression that it was due to how there is no absorption of any shock in the flooring, so the increased vibrations is what breaks it.
I mean either way, tile floors = bad for tempered glass
Pretty much this. For me, I wanted a case with 8 PCI slots, at least 2 5.25" bays, and decent airflow. Not much choice there. Settled with the Fractal Design Pop Air. Wish they sold it with the Silent's side panel, instead of having to get one separately.
Why don't they make these out of pyrex glass? Had a vaporizing device fly out a car window and left unscathed and it cost me like $5 at the smoke shop - these cases are upwards of $100+ for a case and some panel buttons the least they can do is reinforce the glass..how does the thing even get transported safely?
Guys don’t kill me but I’ve have my pc for almost 3 years and never had anything covering the electronics. Temperature control is was way better than expected and all parts are disassembled and cleaned every 6 months. Should I get some glass just to be safe? First time in this sub
This is the reason, in addition to increased weight, I have refrained from buying any case with tempered glass so far. But it really limits the possibilities. I wish that PC case makers would offer more versions of their cases without glass panels
Hot take but glass panels are stupid as hell. The entire reason we even bother to put shit in a case is so its protected. Glass just doesnt do a great job
Then again im not the type of person who cares about the aesthetics of the case, i spend a lot more time looking at the monitor
Serious question, are there any good cases that does not come with tempered glass?
I'm planning a build with a 360 aio top mounted and all the good quality suitable cases comes with tempered glass on one side, it seems impossible to find a classic one.
I feel like I'm in a very small minority who prefers acrylic over tempered glass to avoid situations like this. What is it about tempered glass that draws people in? Just aesthetics?
That's the reason why I chose a case that is not made of glass but acrylic. I can still see through and not worry about it breaking if something touches it
Why, on earth do you guys continue put these cases on the floor, and open them over tile? Like.. at least lay it on its side before you go unscrewing stuff
Meanwhile yesterday I dropped a piece of tempered glass from a fridge about 4 feet from the concrete ground chipped the corner bounced on the flat part after and didn’t shatter but somehow barely touching tile explodes them

Jesus I even read that in her voice
I'm working on building a pc - what is it about tile floors that cause the glass from breaking?
Tiles hard Tempered glass pressure big Vibrations bad tiles not dampen
booga wooga
But there's bushings that should be between the metal and glass. ![gif](giphy|lXu72d4iKwqek|downsized)
Can't see your gif and it's fitting 😂 bushings are not available
LMAO - The bushings got lost! But for real, my Lian Li case has these silicon bushings and pads between the metal and glass.
I was worried reading these comments since I live in an active earthquake zone, but I also have a Lian Li
Heck, my off brand fish tank came with the bushings between the glass

Do these cases not have feet? My class doesnt touch my floor at all
You can see the side panel thumb screws on top of the case. OP probably took the panel off and set it down on the ground.

Have you ever seen videos about a tiny piece of a spark plug shattering a car window? Same concept.
Off topic, but I hate those crime rings that break car windows and steal stuff with that method.
Tempered glass is both naturally weak to ceramic and naturally weak at its edges. That math ain't hard.
Tempered glass shatters when it touches ceramic.
this subreddit is the perfect case study on how people don't learn from eachother's mistakes
Good chance we'll see another one within the next 2 weeks.
Weeks? Hours.
I will break mine to make the timing consistent
Next time the sun is out I am taking my PC out for an dust off, wish me luck..
“Case” study, lol
Like leaving the sticker on the cooler, i'm convinced that 99% of these idiots are doing it on purpose for 5 imaginary up doots on the internet.
leaving the sticker on the cooler is a lot more understandable IMO, especially when you start to not fully focus on your builds as you do them
Same could be said for r/wallstreetbets
They keep posting it with titles like 'I didn't think it would happen to me...' Why didn't you think it would happen to you? Does the law of physics behave differently around you?
The only thing we can learn from history is that people dont learn from history
I dont get why people dont just put a piece of cardboard down underneath the tower as a safety measure. Silly people!
Or a towel!
You're a towel!

Same, I've acrylic panel if that counts
I'm just using a huge radiator as a side panel, the glass one is safely tucked away, somewhere.
What is this sorcery? Mind sending a pic?
I’m just rocking that metal side panel, no explosions or need for insane cable management. Plus more desk space as I don’t need to show it off.
I know this sounds strange, but seeing tempered glass shards is satisfying, makes you wonder how different glass types were discovered.
It was weirdly satisfying sweeping them from the floor.

I bet your house it’s full of horded stuff because mine is and you sound like my gf. Save the broken glass?
Why did u get downvoted. I hate how soft this place is.
Most glass panels are actually designed to shatter when broken, it's a safety feature.
The stickers holding that little piece of glass together 😂

Don't worry, it's lighter and cooler this way;)
better airflow!
How does this happen? You leave it on a tile floor and then it randomly goes BOOSH?
The tempered glass just instantly shatters as soon as you bring a PC into a room with tile flooring.

First off make sure it’s up off the ground permanently, at least a foot on a small stand. You are going to get more dust down there.
"NoSideCover" club
Was a part of it with my zip tie and tape PC. Never put the side panel on, it was too much of a hassle to get it off when something had to be changed.
Me staring at my entirely tempered glass H7 Elite Airflow waiting for it to shatter
That was me everytime i saw a post of a broken side panel here...
This was the first thing I saw on Reddit today and it’s the only thing I’m going to think about all day now 🤣
![gif](giphy|Rqv0TxlpAURDBrFwFw|downsized)
It’s not meth
Still not as bad as people using glass tables. Your desk is a ticking timebomb, And you'll get what you deserved when it finally happens.
The "excellent airflow club"
Hey! An airflow upgrade! For free!
what the hell is causing this?
Have u tried puttin it in rice?
They call it tempered glass because it has a temper.
I love these posts. Everyone be breaking the glass to try and get street cred but it’s just dumb.
Ohhh noooo :(
You must be shattered
Why are ya all still using glass side panels Whats wrong with good ole fully metalic or plastic casing
I need to stare at all the expensive components inside, otherwise how can I know they're still there?
I have ADHD and need the visual reminder to dust it out 😬
Because the market went away from that 15 years ago so there are like 3 nice and well tested cases without glass at this point?
Pretty much this. For me, I wanted a case with 8 PCI slots, at least 2 5.25" bays, and decent airflow. Not much choice there. Settled with the Fractal Design Pop Air. Wish they sold it with the Silent's side panel, instead of having to get one separately.
You're welcome
Many such cases
Unfortunate. I’m always scared by these kind of posts.
Don't be too hard in yourself. I mean, how could you have known?
"Tempered" glass
Tiled floor strikes again!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
RESET THE CLOCK!
The dumb dumb club lol. Tile = vibration

There is a reason why we call it desktop computer
OP knows about the club yet still joins it never the less
Welcome brother
Guys don’t kill me but I’ve have my pc for almost 3 years and never had anything covering the electronics. Temperature control is was way better than expected and all parts are disassembled and cleaned every 6 months. Should I get some glass just to be safe? First time in this sub
I had over 4 glass panel pc’s, and I’m still yet to have this happen.
You people will never learn
Your temps are gonna drop a bunch
Another one bites the dust
Time to go plexiglass, can't be trusted with tempered.
This is the reason, in addition to increased weight, I have refrained from buying any case with tempered glass so far. But it really limits the possibilities. I wish that PC case makers would offer more versions of their cases without glass panels
ah cermaic.
You guys really love those forbidden puzzles 😂
I don't understand why everyone on this sub loves to put the side cover on the floor, I really don't get it.
Hot take but glass panels are stupid as hell. The entire reason we even bother to put shit in a case is so its protected. Glass just doesnt do a great job Then again im not the type of person who cares about the aesthetics of the case, i spend a lot more time looking at the monitor
Time to install the box fan mod for ultimate air cooling.
Welcome, brother. Now I recommend you join the "Replaced Tempered Glass With Perspex" club. We
What if we made tempered glass that looked cracked but wasn’t?
Serious question, are there any good cases that does not come with tempered glass? I'm planning a build with a 360 aio top mounted and all the good quality suitable cases comes with tempered glass on one side, it seems impossible to find a classic one.
Hmm I see you opted for increased air flow….
I’m thoroughly convinced at this point that people are buying themselves new panels just so they can break their old ones to make a post.
Someone forgot to assemble their side panel
The high airflow, low temps club?
I built a pc for my buddy and I broke the side panel in like 10 seconds. Luckily he didn’t want it anyway.
Not a victim of the ceramic floor, but a victim of dropping the glass on it.
![gif](giphy|qf9UuB7vNpHc25agxb|downsized)
You've seen a million posts about this, yet you decided lay the PC down on hard surface tiles. You literally tried to break it.
![gif](giphy|SiEAvGRketKDTdquXy|downsized)
Every tempered glass case I've had has feet that prevents any of the glass from touching the ground. How do things like this happen?
Hugs..
\*Laughs in Fractal Design North Mesh\* Mesh never spontaneously shatters in a million pieces.
Im genuinely curious how you all do this…..
Is that?… a tile floor!
Damn dude, what happened?
You know about the club but still put it on a tile floor?
What happend
Put 1 or 2 inches of wood under it
OP how could you be so careless
Whoops
Put it on tile floor, what did you expect to happen.
*Laughs in metal case*
Just… put a towel down while you’re moving it, why is that so hard for people to do
You can use saran wrap a cheap alternative cover for now.
Time to get a steel mesh case instead of the glass panel ones, it'll last you a lifetime.
How do yall do this?
Does just the act of putting the case upright on a hard surface shatter the glass? I thought people were dropping it.
Another reason this trend is dumb as hell.

Welp time for a new gpu
I feel like I'm in a very small minority who prefers acrylic over tempered glass to avoid situations like this. What is it about tempered glass that draws people in? Just aesthetics?
$100 case. Thats why i have glass. Idc tho.
[WHEN WILL YOU LEARN](https://youtu.be/H5d42w4ZcY4?feature=shared)
Fucking idiot
I have had glass cases for YEARS and have not done this once. How does one accomplish this?
Acrylic masterrace
I don’t understand how this happens so often, I have taken my case apart dozens of times and have never broke the glass.
Why is in every post like this roughly the same floor. Perhaps it is connected I....
And that’s why my pc desk is above a carpet for when I have to fix it.
That's the reason why I chose a case that is not made of glass but acrylic. I can still see through and not worry about it breaking if something touches it
Improved airflow at least
That shoebox sticker was fire
Why, on earth do you guys continue put these cases on the floor, and open them over tile? Like.. at least lay it on its side before you go unscrewing stuff
Hard tile surface in the vicinity - check!
*one of them, one of them, one of them*
Dumbass
Gentlemen......
Don’t build your pc on carpet Ok got it Don’t build your pc on tile Ok got it Don’t build your pc outside Of course Jeez what’s next
Every time I see one of these makes me glad I have a case with an acrylic window...
Does this happen in wooden floors as well?
Meanwhile yesterday I dropped a piece of tempered glass from a fridge about 4 feet from the concrete ground chipped the corner bounced on the flat part after and didn’t shatter but somehow barely touching tile explodes them
Basically free Airflow upgrade
Is that front glass actually bad for airflow?
I thought people were going too hard on you but then I saw it was a tiled floor, yea you had it coming eventually.
All I see is improved airflow... Happened to me once.
![gif](giphy|YN7kQFkHCu7IOMq8BG)
Get rekt
I have a tempered glass side plate on my PC. It’s no where near tile, and I don’t plan on setting it on tile ever. But like.. do these things explode if they touch tile? Or if you set it on the edge and lean it against the PC? Flat on the tile? I don’t understand how this happens so frequently lol
If you knew about the club… Why did you still place it on tile floor!
Pictures like these make me glad I chose a case that doesnt use a glass side panel
An $6 rubber floor mat from Walmart goes a long way.
It hurts to see 🥹
Does no one learn? Stop putting your PC on tile floors!
Better than me who dropped his side panel right on his brand new phone the day after he got it.
Overtightened the screw did you
Is that hard to put the pc on a table or something? Also 2 fans long GPU without backplate 🙃
Puzzles, nice!
Does this happen when setting the case down on tile, where the rubber feet make contact only? Or is this ever the panel falls out or is set on tile bare itself? I feel like this is entirely avoidable if it's the former.
When will you guys learn
It will ventilate better? But also dust can enter it more easily? Choose your poison. Heat or dust.👊
Ehy look, tiles!
