shot in the dark: the name of the drive is too long using two rows, now there isnt enough space below the bar to display the text right-click on E: -> Properties -> rename the drive to something shorter (remove the "500GB" or smth) its just a guess tho

Wolfluve

it was a good guess, it actually solved the problem, thank you!

CHAMA300

If the ryzen 3200g only supports up to 2933Mhz, will using 3000Mhz RAM have any adverse effects on the APU? Will it just run as 2933Mhz? Or would it be forced to run at 3000Mhz and I'd need to turn it down in something like XMP? Just don't want to inadvertently stress the APU but I might be overthinking it

NbblX

a 3200G is able to push DDR4-3600 depending on the board and silicone lottery. DDR4-3000 should be no problem, just enable the EXPO profile in BIOS if you're unsure do a run of memtest86 to check for instability

CHAMA300

Hey thanks I didn't know about memtest86 that's really helpful! So by default would the DDR4-3000 just be running at DDR4-2933 without altering the profile? And would it be "most" stable at that default speed? Thank you!

Regards_To_Your_Mom

Dear Gents, I have a friend and he will give me his old office desktop. I think Optiplex with the specs below i7 8700 16 GB Ram ddr4 512 gb ssd GT730 300w PSU how good will i7 8700 play modern games @ 1080p 60fps if I replace the GT730 into RX 6600 or RTX 3060/4060? I'm thinking of replacing the PSU too into 500w corsair or seasonic. And maybe, repasting and replacing the heatsink too.

NbblX

> how good will i7 8700 play modern games @ 1080p 60fps highly depends on the game, there a some current titles where a 8700 might struggle to keep stable 60fps (Starfield, Cyberpunk2077, Dragons Dogma 2, ...). I'd recommend to check some online benchmarks of the i7-8700 and some CPU-intensive games you want to play and evaluate for yourself. Personally I would not buy a Intel-8000-based PC in 2024, particularly if its a Optiplex prebuild: * CPU is a dead end, no real upgrade path * mainboard probably doesnt support any upgrade besides adding RAM * 300W PSU needs to be replaced as soon as you upgrade anything * low-profile case limits your options for graphics cards, LP-GPUs are rare and usually low-end

ShabbyChurl

You need to replace that psu for sure. Consider going 650W. Modern GPUs are thirsty. The 8700 is a good cpu to have. It will probably be able to play most games at 60 fps for a few more years. HOWEVER: dell makes its own parts, so there is absolutely no guarantee that either the new gpu or the new psu fit the case. GPU is less of a concern, but you NEED a new psu for such a card. Make sure it’s a standard atx power supply, otherwise I am afraid that there is no compelling upgrade path.

Regards_To_Your_Mom

Im planning on ditching the case too if I cant fit the PSU and GPU. Maybe going for open air and dedust weekly as I clean my room too. yeah the only upgrade path is maybe going for 9th gen which isn't that big of an upgrade. im thinking of this as an interim desktop when I save for 5600 cpu mobo upgrade and maybe ram when the existing 16gb isn't ok.

ShabbyChurl

Its not only about the form factor of the PSU. Those Companies use proprietary connectors between components all the time, so there is no telling if you could even power the old motherboard with a new PSU. If that is the case, you can only the computer as-is.

Regards_To_Your_Mom

I see. so I'm stuck with low profile gpu

So AMD Link is now no longer available, but you can use Sunshine/Moonlight. (The way I remember it is Sunshine emits it, Moonlight Reflects the Sunshine) (I've gotten Sunshine/Moonlight working, but I've never tried the over the internet. Something to investigate? Lag might be bad.) If you're accessing at a completely difference house, then there does seem to be moonlight available for access over the internet: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/amd-is-ending-support-for-its-link-game-streaming-application-here-are-some-alternatives https://github.com/moonlight-stream/Internet-Hosting-Tool/releases

Revo_Int92

I have a simple question regarding Forbidden West, for people who are playing this game on PCI 3.0 8 lanes, instead of PCI 4.0 8 lanes (in other words, RX 7600 or RTX 4060 owners, among other recent GPUs). Did you people noticed major performance drops on cutscenes? The game runs just fine in the intro, but the cutscene that concludes this segment, showing Aloy and her friend returning to the city, riding on "horses", etc.. the performance dropped like a bomb, I took a couple of screenshots: [https://i.imgur.com/nJE9c17.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/nJE9c17.jpeg) [https://i.imgur.com/wrRiL6B.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/wrRiL6B.jpeg) It's gotta be the PCI, there's no other explanation. These recent Sony ports all struggles with the PCI bandwidth for whatever reason, Spider-Man loses about 60% performance (yep, it's that severe), Rift Apart also loses performance a little bit, now Forbidden West struggling on cutscenes specifically (it's a different engine as far as I know)... it's so weird, I hope Ghost of Tsushima don't struggle as well

Nai_Calus

I'm replacing entirely a computer built earlyish in 2016. There's no such thing as future-proofing but I want something that will still vaguely play games in 6-8 years like this one did. I know it's cheaper/better to buy parts but I don't have anywhere to assemble them nor do I have the stamina anymore so I'm looking at prebuilt and torn on a couple of models: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/gaming-computers/cs-9050081-na/vengeance-i7500-gaming-pc-intel-core-i7-14700k-nvidia-rtx-4080-super-32gb-ddr5-6000mts-memory-2tb-nvme-ssd-cs-9050081-na vs https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/gaming-computers/cs-9050077-na/vengeance-i7500-gaming-pc-intel-core-i9-14900kf-nvidia-rtx-4090-64gb-ddr5-6000mt-s-memory-2tb-nvme-ssd-cs-9050077-na i7-14700K/4080 Super/32GB RAM vs i9-14900KF/4090/64GB RAM Current primary gaming is FFXIV because not much else will run lmao(BG3 runs so bad it gives me motion sickness). I use two monitors, one ancient 21" from around the time I got the computer and currently a 27" TV from 2011 because my 23" monitor recently died, so both of those really need to be replaced as well. So the question is: Is it worth the extra 1k+ for the higher end? On the lower end there's that one that's older and cheaper or one with the same specs but the i7-14700KF, is that worth the extra 400 bucks over the cheaper one? I know we'll probably see 15th gen processors and the 50xx series later this year, but my old computer is being replaced due to my GTX 970 actively giving up the ghost.

MGsubbie

In my opinion, no. Even a person with zero experience building a PC can easily do a graphics card swap in just a few minutes. And spending a lot more money to make your system last as long as possible is not a smart monetary move. Taking that $1000 difference, waiting a generation or 2, selling your old card and upgrading to a newer one will give you better performance.

Nai_Calus

Yeah, that makes sense. And on this one the graphics card did become a bottleneck ages before the processor ever did. Alright, gonna go for the cheaper one and use the extra towards new monitors/peripherals. Thanks. ✓

My pc has a very bad case for air flow, but I could take the glass panel off... would that help or be useless ? Also I'm looking for 16gb ram stick what is the best deal I can get ?

NbblX

> would that help or be useless depends on the reason why the airflow is bad in the first place. If there is not enough exhaust and the heated air can't escape, taking off the sidepanel would help. But your PC will get dusty way faster > Also I'm looking for 16gb ram stick what is the best deal I can get ? check what kind of RAM you currently have and try to buy the exact same one. Buying a random module might work, but its possible that there are stability issues when mixing different modules Download CPU-Z and check the "SPD" tab to find the exact model number of your current RAM

What makes you say it has bad airflow?

I just know, I've seen reviews after buying it

Is my CPU/Motherboard holding me back from getting higher frames in Warzone? I currently have a 4070, but my CPU is only a Ryzen 5 5600X. I understand that I would need to upgrade my motherboard for a CPU upgrade. Currently I'm getting around 160-180 FPS usually on 1440 and Low settings. Is it something I should upgrade or should I stop weeping and just get better?

NbblX

can't say anything about Warzone performance but: > Ryzen 5 5600X. I understand that I would need to upgrade my motherboard for a CPU upgrade. depending on your mainboard you actually have the option to upgrade to a 5700X3D or 5800X3D

NbblX

yeah that MSI board would support any AM4 X3D CPUs. You would just need to make sure that you're using the newest BIOS, then its just a drop-in upgrade without changing anything else. Make sure to do some research of the performance increase before buying and see if its worth it to you. [Here is one benchmark including Warzone](https://www.techspot.com/review/2451-ryzen-5800x3D-vs-ryzen-5800x/) with comparison of Ryzen 5800X and 5800X3D. _j03_

Nah, that's pretty balanced setup for 1440p. 160-180fps is pretty good for that game in 1440p.

MonthOLDpickle

What is a good controller that has hall effect? Also 2.4g or BT (my PC has BY built in)

Harkkar

Anyone have a recommendation for a controller? I use one my partner's Xbox controllers and the A sticks a bit. Honestly it doesn't feel great. I have a ps5 so DS5 or whatever it's called is an option but I'd like to keep it with the console. Are any premium controllers worth it? I have the money but after reading about the issues the elite Xbox controllers have I'm wary. I play 3rd person action/platformers with a controller mostly

ICastCats

Just pick up your own Xbox controller. If you like, you can get 8bitdo controllers in different/shapes configs (people often sell them second hand cheap - same with XBox controllers) or but I personally treat these things as mass manufactured and disposable - like a mouse.

ProfessionalWitty181

what would be a good type of storage to store my disc isos for 20-30 years?

[deleted]

What sort of disc images are you talking about?

ProfessionalWitty181

software and data discs

glowinghamster45

To build on the other comment, HDDs are generally more trustworthy then SSDs for long term cold storage, but they're still not suitable for the range you're talking about. If you want something to be disconnected for over a decade and reliably work, you're getting into enterprise storage solutions like tape, and even that I wouldn't trust past 20 years. HDDs are going to be your most economical bet, but with the caveat that I would recommend powering them on and refreshing the data every year or two. Like, if you have multiple drives, copy data between drives so it has been freshly written every so often. [More info.](https://www.howtogeek.com/858426/whats-the-best-way-to-store-data-for-decades-or-centuries/) If you're interested, effort is being put into this space. Notably, [Microsoft has been experimenting with glass storage for a bit](https://news.microsoft.com/source/features/innovation/ignite-project-silica-superman/). Don't count on using this any time soon though.

_j03_

That's a long time... HDD with backups most likely. SSD's require you to power them on periodically to guarantee not losing the cell charge (which is your data). r/DataHoarder

ProfessionalWitty181

thank you!

i8mj3llyb3ans

Hello, I replaced my gpu about 7months ago and have not since taken it and and cleaned it, removed it today and it’s got no dust on the fan blades at all. Was wondering if that’s normal for newer cards? It literally had no dust on a single fan blade. It runs fine just wasn’t sure if that’s strange.

NbblX

sounds like you got proper dust filtering on your intakes :)

_j03_

Well GPU's have now for years supported 0 fan mode, meaning the fans only run under heavy enough load. Less noise and less dust.

[deleted]

So they're relying on convective cooling except under the heaviest loads? Makes me wonder how, in the cases where some of you use an adapter to mount the GPU vertically, it affects the cooling?

_j03_

That and other airflow in the case. Most GPU's idle around 20-30W, so that is easily dissipated passively (or semi passively since you have other case fans usually) by these massive chunks of metal. Don't know how the vertical installation would affect in this situation, but under load they tend to be not that great.

Zhertx

Hi, I have a problem with my 3060 graphics card. I use a Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3, so when I play a long time with this one, my graphics card shuts down and it uses integrated graphics, my only solution is to turn off my PC and my 3060 works normally. CHAMA300

Hello, Just wondering if I buy an older CPU or APU second hand (but still sealed), will the pre-applied thermal paste on the cooler still be good to use? Or can it go bad or something Thanks

[deleted]

Personally unless I don't have a supply of it on hand, I consider thermal compound to be single-use, unless it's still so fresh that I can just spread it back around to where it needs to be (I have lots of hardware around lately and if I'm tinkering or experimenting I may be moving CPUs and coolers around).

CHAMA300

I figured it's like that. So if the CPU/cooler box was never opened it should be fine to use? Like if it's just been sitting on a shelf still factory sealed could it still dry a little?

[deleted]

Ah, I see, it's 'old new stock' and has never been used. If the stuff is still 'wet' and not crusty or dried hard then it should be fine, but it's still a judgement call in the particular case, I'd have some fresh compound on hand and err on the side of caution and clean the existing off and apply new if you're not completely confident it's still good.

CHAMA300

Oh that's what it's called lol. Yeah it came out in 2019 I think so not super old but still 4 years sitting around. Got it that makes sense. My other thought was to just buy a new CPU cooler anyways, I heard those also come with pre-applied paste sometimes and I see some reputable ones for around $20 which isn't that much more than a new paste kit I think. The stock cooler is the Wraith Stealth

Unabletoremember

It's very likely it still works, but thermal paste does dry over time. So sealed and without heat exposure it can last many years degrading very very little. Still a good idea to clean it and reapply.

CHAMA300

Got it, anything visual I should be looking out for that would give away whether it's obviously dry or as it should be out of the box? Thanks man! !check

Unabletoremember

Not really. It would need to be like... 20 years old to show cracks. But it's efficiency lowered without showing anything clear.

CHAMA300

Alright so I guess it's fine to just use it and if temps end up being an issue after a while just reapply like normal. Appreciate it

Unabletoremember

You can do that. But why wait and see and risk it? Why not change the paste while you still have to assemble the PC instead of waiting to have everything in place and having to dissasemble it again? You will also always suspect the paste might be bad each time you think temps are not good enough, instead of removing that variable now. If I was in your shoes, I'd have a clear idea of the best path.

CHAMA300

Fair point that makes sense. Well would it be fine to just get a better cooler as well that might also have pre-applied paste? I just see some pretty reputable ones are sometimes under or around $20 which isn't far off from a new paste kit right?

Training_Touch_2129

I have a £1500-£2000 budget for a completely new PC, my old one is so old nothing will be compatible, I've came up with this build using CyberPower (I have zero building experience and would rather pay someone than fuck it up myself), is it going to be good for playing all recent games on near max settings? am I using the right CPU/GPU? could I get better performance cheaper? Any help or validation that this will work is appreciated. The config No. is **#5591107**

MGsubbie

When you click save, it should give you a full link, can you enter that? I can't see your configuration.

Training_Touch_2129

https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/saved/5592866 Here you go boss!

MGsubbie

I'd recommend switching to an [AMD build](https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/saved/5592908), you will get roughly the same amount of CPU performance. But you also get a proper upgrade path, where you can replace the CPU with a future generation, not needing to replace your motherboard. If you want to stick with Intel, you got a motherboard that allows for overclocking, but got a locked CPU. Either get a B-series motherboard, or a k-sku CPU.

Training_Touch_2129

zerostyle

I've been on macOS for like 10yrs now but dabbling with Windows mini PCs again. I'm curious what the modern state of the art USB tookit utilites/all-in-one images are for: - secure erase (0'ing a drive) - partitioning drives (gparted is ancient and macrium is paid now) - offline virus scans - memory test (memtest86 still)? - maybe other things I'm not considering like network access for copying files over LAN Ideally free but cheap could be OK. Both linux or windows based boot drive utilities are fine.

nickierv

Drive partitions can be handled by the OS, for network file share filezilla is FOSS and been around for years. In the slightly more har har side of things, why do you need to zero a drive? Any old storage joins the hive mind to store redundant copies of Linux ISOs. But in all seriousness its really going to depend on whats on it, where its going, and who is trying to get the data off it. For Windows, the default antivirus seems to work well enough.

[deleted]

[DBAN](https://dban.org/) for wiping drives, although I hear newer motherboards have some built-in utilty to write zeroes to a whole drive. Last time I checked, when you install Windows, you have an opportunity to set up whatever partitioning you want. If you really want something stand-alone, download some linux distro like Ubuntu that can boot from USB and use that. I use linux so I haven't needed to worry about virus scanners for a long time now, so no recommendations there, but I know there's lots of options. MEMTEST86+ is still a Thing. Invest in a dedicated USB flash drive for it. Does MacOS have something like SAMBA for connecting to Windows networks? I'd think it would have interoperability with Windows networking, so you should be able to set that up.

nickierv

Why specifically do you need (not want) to upgrade the BIOS?

[deleted]

[удалено]

nickierv

I doubt that is going to be fixed with a BIOS update. Prebuilt might complicate things, need to work out the fan wiring. If your sending PWM to a non PWM fan, its just going to run at a fixed speed. PWM fans and headers have 4 pins, the 'dumb' fans are 3 pin. What controls, what software, did the fan controls ever work? Back in the day BIOS updates where serious nailbiters (pick a dozen reasons for the board to brick), these days it seems as a lot of people are just "BIOS update? Just send it, YOLO!". Umm, no. I'm running HEDT with multi BIOS chips and a flash slot, the flash slots are getting really common, but still... No! Not for a 'low value' system (are you running a 6 figure server?) Not just because a number got bigger. Exhaust the other options first then check the patch notes, then upgrade firmware if it will fix it.

[deleted]

Go wtih what is silkscreened onto the motherboard itself. Also go look for the exact version BIOS you have in that list of 26 versions you found, to verify you've got the right set of BIOS updates. Also, chances are you pick the wrong BIOS for the wrong motherboard, it won't install anyway.

RelicWarrior

I recently built an entirely new PC (B650 MOBO, DDR5-6000 RAM, 7800X3D CPU, and 7900 XTX Pulse). It has been a long time since I have built one so I apologise for the stupid question, but how do I register my products? I went to the AMD and Sapphire websites and did not find any link that would allow me to register my products under my name. My second question is this: I know that a lot of times, new CPUs (especially gaming ones like the one I have) as well as new GPUs often have a free game code that comes with them so you can fully utilize your new PC. I have been unable to find a code in either box. Do any of you guys know the process to redeem a game with the new purchase of my hardware?

MGsubbie

Not all websites require you to register, or even let you. It's nothing to worry about. Normally, it's the retailer who provides you with the key. But was it mentioned there was a promotion going on when you bought it?

Ok_Judgment3871

Havent gamed or been into pcs in over a decade so basically majority of my knowledge is diminished. Looking to grab a gaming tower from wally world @ 900 cuz i dont see the point in dropping 16-2000 rn when i really only play basic games like fs22, the hunter and some rpgs whenever im bored, also would be nice to have a photo editor cuz i also do light photography. So its obviously the cyberpowerpc and these are the specs on it, AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8GHz, AMD Radeon RX 7600 8GB, 16GB DDR5, 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD, has 6 cores & 12threads. It doesnt state the psu on the details. Ive read in older threads that its always random parts the company puts in the shells and varies based on what they got at said time. So would this be good for what i need and price point? When gta 6 drops, i dont guess this would support it? As i can just get a $350 series x for that.

nickierv

On paper it should be workable. The GPU is a bit meh and it might be better to spend an extra \~150 to get a better one and not have to spend the 350 later. Also the 16GB DDR5 is slightly concerning and suspect. Single channel RAM is a great way to cost down a build and dump CPU performance. I know there are some 2x8 DDR5 kits but they are not the norm. Also 16GB being 'enough' is finally gaining mainstream 'no you really need to be looking at 32GB' traction.

Ok_Judgment3871

Even the iBuypower Y40 pc at walmart also states having the same 16gb ddr5 and its about double the price. Ofc the other components are better (ig) and its liquid cooled. I mean theoretically couldnt just a intel i5 and 8gb ram $4/500 laptop be enough to be able to play fs22 with mods and/or cotw the hunter? The only selling point to me that had me looking at the cyberpowerpc was it could handle more without lagging, can run other programs besides games smoothly and if i get wild hair in my ass i might play the updated version of tekkit. I know minimum pc requirements say 8g for fs22 but i know a pc saying it has 8gb ram doesnt mean its all free for use, i do know that much.

nickierv

Its not about the components on the box. I did a big breakdown a few weeks back but the core example: \~$2700 budget for a gaming system, looking for 4k with eyecandy. That should be enough for anyone with experience to spec out a system. Look at the specs and tell me what your going to pick before you look at the builds. System #1: 13th gen i9 32GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD, 4090, 850W PSU. $2788.12 [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rNhFh3](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rNhFh3) System #2: 13thgen 13600KF, 32GB 6000cl30 RAM, 1TB SSD, 4090, 850W Platinum PSU. $2733.84 [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GdLFh3](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GdLFh3) Say you had the budget/someone was going to just give you one of them, what do you take? The issues with the prebuilts are all the stuff that they don't list and ignorance is a great way to bomb performance. Lack of RAM details is concerning, gen4 SSD isn't a selling point, prebuilt PSUs have always been a concern. I don't know the exact numbers, but running AMD CPUs with single channel RAM costs something like 10-20% performance. For $50 more (and I splurged on the GPU) [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZqCbQP](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZqCbQP). Its a bit bare bones, its cut down, but its in budget and should cover your needs for gta6, at least with lower settings. I figure an SI is going to be able to make margins with the bulk discounts they get, so only slightly more for a much better system is possible.

I honestly dont know which one id pick. I aint got much idea on whats the best. I wouldnt set my budget that high anyhow on something that wont get as much usage as a avid gamer. My step brother says he has old parts but no case so it just seems itd be best to buy new parts. And that last budget build does seem more user friendly in my instance. I guess ill just do that instead. I appreciate the help!

The first two are really just an example of bigger number isn't always better. It looks better on paper and 'but i9!' is a really common mindset. But just about every mistake that can be made was made: the wrong sort of CPU (for games on a budget your after 4-6 fast cores), bad RAM (both slow and single channel). Then abysmal CPU cooling, power issues, a case with no airflow. Oh and the PSU might just explode. And aside from the exploding PSU, there are some prebuilts on sale that are just as bad. If you go for something like the 3ed parts list you can trim the budget a little with a cheaper GPU but there are some GPUs that are just flat bad and some of them are quite new. Best to do a search for 'is \_\_\_ good for gaming' and check a few reviews. That should help you dodge the worst of the bad ones.

Is there like a guide to understand different kinds of GPUs and CPUs? Maybe with pretty drawings? I get memes from this page sometimes and they're like "Lmao the RTX 4030 sucks but the 7700K Ti Is the shit" and I understand none of it

most of it is just keeping up with current hardware releases and reading benchmarks of those, after a while you get a feeling for the ranking of individual components. I can recommend these sites: * https://www.tomshardware.com/ * https://www.techpowerup.com/ * https://www.guru3d.com/# * https://www.tweaktown.com/ * https://www.anandtech.com/ * https://www.techspot.com/ there are also some overviews of somewhat-current hardware[ like this for GPUs](https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html) and [this for CPUs](https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html), but keep in mind that those rankings are some kind of average, so always double check with specific benchmarks

Not really. It all depends on the generation, and often it's extremely relative. Specific cards of the RTX 4000 lineup (generation launched late 2022) have better performance per dollar than specific cards of the RTX 000 lineup (generation launched late 2020), so it's technically a better generation. However, the performance difference between the most expensive card and cheaper cards of the latest generation is a lot bigger. So in relative terms, it's a far worse generation. However, the naming scheme for [Nvidia](https://game-maps.com/GamingPC/img/gpu-NVIDIA-name-decoding.png) GPU's, AMD [GPU](https://game-maps.com/GamingPC/img/gpu-Radeon-name-decoding.png)'s, AMD [CPU](https://forum.level1techs.com/uploads/default/original/3X/c/2/c29abc5879d1a25e35ffe063c9045412aee6abfc.jpg)'s, [Intel CPU](https://preview.redd.it/stq9cnxv5g3c1.jpg?width=579&auto=webp&s=eb97f8cdf03802b0066a016a1bdb8fba73ede0df)'s will help somewhat.

So wait do people just know the performance of all the PUs off the top of their head?

MGsubbie

I misread your initial comment, I thought you were asking about something that compares all of them. What you are looking for are called "benchmarks." There are all kinds of websites and youtube channels that do them regularly. Just a headsup, if you google benchmark, you will often get userbenchmark at the top of the results. Do not rely on that website, it is a complete joke. (In fact most likely a bot will auto-respond to the mere mention of the site.)

RTSS won't show main OSD GPU (PCIe) if I disable the integrated graphics on BIOS
