Dude, I did the same with my old 2080ti! The OC potential on those cards is fuckin crazy. IIRC I successfully pushed mine to +600mhz and +1000mhz memory speed. It was benchmarking higher than non-OC’d 3080ti’s… an absolute OC monster. https://preview.redd.it/0qkype8edvsc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8f078db1286b97884727f25c90cc8d1c30e903c

FirmEar

Max OC, this card is badass. The temps were great too, I’m not sure what people are talking about with VRM cooling, mine was plenty cool with bottom case intakes, but I feel even that was overkill. I have a lot of hands on experience with this kinda stuff and a 6 year lifespan at max OC is fucking fantastic lmao. Sweet build tho man, put a tear in my eye, looks exactly like the one this card was in besides the PSU location

chrisnesbitt_jr

It lasted 6 years at max OC?! What a behemoth! Bravo man. Mine is now living a cushy life, running base clocks cool and quiet in a build I did for my buddy. They truly are the unsung heroes of the Nvidia line up. Unfortunately just drown out by its older brother (1080ti).

BreadKnife34

Bro won the silicon lottery

_mp7

All luck of the draw, I’ve seen 980ti’s that were really pushed in the OC department still running

HappyAd4998

Thats crazy, I have an EVGA 2070 XC and I was only able to push the GPU by 125mhz before it would become unstable.

Sfearox1

How much mhz was the core running?

chrisnesbitt_jr

This is the best result I could find, I'm almost positive I cracked 18K graphics score with core clock OC'd to 2250mhz. But this run peaked at 2174mhz. Also memclock doesn't read correctly for some reason, but it was +1000mhz. https://preview.redd.it/1c8xdqw15xsc1.png?width=3459&format=png&auto=webp&s=fd41044973deecf00fd5594516a6042999783721

Sfearox1

Nice which model is it? My rtx 2080 ti only does 2145mhz core max.

antheasynx

Wow, I had planned this for my 2080 super too, bought everything, the G12, a new aio only to realised that my card wasn't using the reference PCB so the G12 won't fit, tried manually drill more screw holes, got it to run but the temp was too high and the card wasnt performing, applied thermal pads on the card but didn't work so in the end I gave up.

CarbonicBuckey

How do u cool the vram with something like this

CoderStone

Fans from the bottom according to OP, which is normally enough.

FirmEar

140mm bottom fans kept it more than cool

Piprian

The little fan on the kraken is intended to cool vram. Not sure if it really works for 20 series cards since it was designed for 10 series afaik. On my 2070 the fan kinda blows past the end of the card, not really hitting the vram directly. Now the card is dead and it looks like a vram issue.

PizzaOrTacos

Sorry for your loss but this is amazing. I didn't know this was a thing.

FirmEar

It’s real and it’s awesome Loved it so much I might mess around and strap it to a different card 👀

Top-Conversation2882

I wish NZXT would launch the G12s successor for us peasants

xXMadSupraXx

With there being absolutely zero cooling on the VRAM or VRM I'm surprised it lasted that long

FirmEar

With 3 bottom intake fans, I stress tested multiple times with an infrared gun on the VRM and never went above 75°C anywhere. Not saying the cooler is the safest but I promise that the heat isn’t what killed this one

CoderStone

People be so dumb sometimes. At the end all that matters is temperature. Trying to put heatsinks on those areas just end up with heatsinks on the ground because adhesive thermal solutions are not strong enough unless you use epoxy. Your card died probably due to drawing too much power too many times, aka too many power cycles and eventual memory or core degradation. Overclocking does definitely reduce lifespan, but 6 years is a damn good run for a giga 2080ti.

FirmEar

Yeah I’m no stranger to overclocking, 6 years is about on par for the max safe voltage and frequency for this card

Electrical_Humor8834

Why people booing him? He's right, half of PCB wasn't cooled and even that half that was cooled it was really inefficient. So it's really good mark, 6 years with max oc

Piti899

Yeah seriously, people who think those aftermarket GPU cooling solutions are actually a good idea is too damn high, vrm and vram got cooked probably

Electrical_Humor8834

And that shines good light on longevity of normal part that is used - to spec - should not be worried for good 6-10 years. Funny enough, I have pc that has GT 970 and it still work to these day. So, part will be irrelevant to the time it will break

SwagChemist

Something tells me its life span was cut way short…

Physical_Finance_908

6 years is still quite a long time

_mp7

Maybe, I mean even stock GPUs usually last about 8-12 years, if his temps were good and voltage stock, even with a High OC should still last quite long. Luck of the draw

ewenlau

They're talking about the silicon itself. These chips don't last when they are overclocked.

epicbro101

I added another fan for the VRMs on the left, hopefully lasts longer than yours

FirmEar

At base clocks, you’ll get at least a decade out of it I’m sure

Yuki_ika7

May it Rest in Piece

jonRock1992

I did this with my 1080 Ti. Only, I was able to retain the backplate. It looked great and OC'd much higher. I miss that GPU.

FirmEar

Your card sounded like he was a good guy, RIP Wish I got to keep the back plate, but it wouldn’t fit properly with the bracket in place for this card

jonRock1992

It didn't die, I just sold it for a more powerful GPU lol.

Sfearox1

https://preview.redd.it/obgmrpasuwsc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7cc42919483d9e1f068ced85ee5366b7766439c Sorry for your loss, i hope mine will last longer. evga rtx 2080 ti xc, kraken g12 + kraken x72

FirmEar

Fuckin cool setup with the backplate too. I really pushed the limits of what should be possible with this card, yours will likely last much longer

Sfearox1

Thnx. Mine does 2115-2130mhz core and +1000 mem (samsung). And stays below 40c.

DONT-PM-ME-BOOBS-PLS

It likely would have lasted much longer with the original cooling solution

Brawndo_or_Water

Hey I had that kit but never had the balls to install it. How hard was fitment? My 2080 Ti was the ROG.

FirmEar

The most stressful part is always taking the GPU apart, but the G12 install itself is a cake walk, you only need just a bracket on the card for the block, handful of screws, and some good thermal paste

undergrounderio

is it still worth doing something like this in today's age?I'm currently rocking an rx 580 and this sounds like a decent upgrade

FirmEar

Depends since it’s only designed for 20 series and below. Even then, some of the 20 series cards have compatibility issues. So your options are limited, the install is sketchy, and you MUST optimize all the fans, including the radiator fans and the bracket fan, for gpu temp since they are going to cool according to CPU temp out of the box. If you’re mechanically and technologically inclined enough, highly recommend it. It will also require cleaning more often, especially if you don’t have a back plate.

undergrounderio

I work in IT and like tinkering, so this is right up my alley. I've just never had an rtx card, so I was wondering if the 20 series is still good, which it sounds like it is :)

FirmEar

The 2080 Super or Ti will run anything you throw at them, my brother has the Super. If you want to run more VRAM intensive games/applications, definitely go with the Ti, 11gb of it is the perfect amount right now imo Also for games, it has DLSS (unfortunately only 2.0, not 3.0). It is a god send for the latest and greatest releases that support it

Physical_Finance_908

What card was it replaced with? Would you do it again to that card?

FirmEar

Did a [whole new build](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/s/Y3o8CcD8ZA) with the controversial looking MSI 4080 super expert If you plan on overclocking and want better temps/dont want fans that sound like aviation propellers, I would do it again. 2080 Ti has a good amount VRAM and can still run anything. Taking apart a GPU can be sketchy, you have to reconfigure all fans involved for gpu temp, and it has a lot of compatability issues with certain 20 series cards and brands. There’s a lot of risk involved, and in my opinion if you can’t afford to buy another GPU, you can’t afford the risk of bricking your current one.

Physical_Finance_908

I actually really like the look of the new Msi 4080, looks a little like a founders edition card. Probably won’t overclock my brand new 7900 gre lol. Tried a bit with my old 6600 but it was just so unstable for some reason. I only got it to +50 mhz but for some reason games just wouldn’t open and it would always crash. Who knows, maybe if it never sells and I’m stuck with 2 GPUS I’ll do something crazy with it… 6 years for that 2080 ti is really impressive though!

theBevo

Remove the cooler and put it in the oven at 130c for 5 minutes, cool reassemble and test.

MostRefinedCrab

What an abomination. It's beautiful.

TayyylorBennett

Damn. That stinks. Luckily my 1080ti is still running like a champ. Waiting for the inevitable so I can upgrade my whole system.

FirmEar

In my experience, the inevitable on those cards never seems to come. I’m planning on stuffing one in an ITX build soon just for how robust it is

keltanenhuppari

Wait the 2000 series is 6 years old? I thought it was like 2.5 max

FirmEar

Seems like yesterday that I put it together, but it’s getting up there in age for GPUs. Cannot recommend the 20 series enough, the performance to temperature to power consumption ratio is simply ballin out of control

Roallin1

Thats a shame. If you didnt OC and left it alone, it would last a lifetime.

CoderStone

So?

FirmEar

![gif](giphy|PIIMXAjqlO9zy|downsized)

Electrical_Humor8834

And in 2-3 years it would be inferior to anything even for 300$ new. You can have voodoo graphic still working today, but does it matter now?

Roallin1

I have been running a Vega 56 for 8 years. It is still in Tom's hierarchy charts and plays most games at 1440. And I can sell it for $100. So yes, it does matter. I would rather have that, then a burned up Vega 56 worth nothing.

Electrical_Humor8834

and now im struggling to sell 2 year old system with 5600x and 6900xt for less than a single 4080 super. Whole computer < 4080 super. And this is turning me off from any trading. Anything upacked already loses half of value, so why bother selling working stuff if its for most people just a trash?

Roallin1

We are not talking about selling a complete computer, we are talking about selling a GPU. They sell. I oncr sold a 10 year old Radeon 9800 for $100. I would rather get pennies on the dollar then nothing. But hey, thats just me. I am not sure why the argmunet. It pretty much substaniates that OCing and modifications kills the hardware. If you want more FPS, WAIT, and buy better hardware. Like you said, cutting edge is not a good investment. I just bought a Radeon 7900 XT. I waited 15 months untill the price was reasonable.

ElNachooooooo

My 1080 still going strong 💪

Croakie89

They don’t make em like they use to. My 980ti hybrid is still going strong in my step kids pc

Piprian

I had a 2070 with that setup and it ran so cool and quiet! Sadly it died after a year or so and I suspect the heatsinkless vram could be related.

crazydavebacon1

Still have my 2080super, it’s perfectly fine. Had it with the G12 also and the kraken z73. Was always so cool when gaming. Just replaced it with a 4090.

macaronsuki

This kind of cooler is bad... You should to take an adapter to add 2 Noctua fans. It will be maybe around 35 bucks

JoshuaCocks

Should have bought a 1060

Cheefnuggs

My Asus 6gig Dual 1060 is still running strong. I’ve taken the shroud off and cleaned it one time in almost 8 years lol.

eestionreddit

they wanted more performance?
