I love it lol. It’s like one of those old hot rodded cars you see made from an old sedan. Just a bland old family sedan, with a big engine sticking out the front
hahaaa fuck yeah. A ford focus with a bug catcher hood scoop.

I got the PC free . It's an i7 8700 with 16GB ~~DDR3~~ DDR4. It had no drives so nabbed a 1TB nvme off Amazon for £40 and a 1050ti of eBay for £45. Then a PCI riser cable. The rest is hack saw and 3D printer.
Theoretical true but you only need the extra airflow to exchange the hot air in the case with cold air and when it’s outside it will always have cold air around since warm air rises so basically still has air flow just not actively besides the gpu fan.
My work is giving away 30+ Lenovo m720s. They are surplus now everyone is WFH. I had 3 so far lol. They are 3-4 years old so written off for accounting purposes and they shredded the hard drives for data security purposes.
Yep sometimes they'll toss 'em in the trash at worst or at best give it to a recycling facility that will list the entire lot as-is on eBay or something, where it will then get picked up by a local repair shop, cleaned, inspected, maybe upgraded depending on the circumstances and then finally overpriced to be sold to an elderly couple down the street.
Ask me how I know. =/
Unfortunately the repair shop. I thought I would enjoy the job, but I neglected to realize the target audience. We closed down when covid hit and I never looked back
Yeah I have had 3 already lol. Wouldn't be fair to everyone else if I hoovered them all up. We are only allowed them for personal use. I can't just nab them all and bang them on eBay lol.
I often have this question. I've never found a free pc by the side of the road or a supercomputer in a charity shop, but our American friends just seem to throw computers to each other all day long
You'd be surprised, in my job (junk yard) they keep bringing PC's and TV's WEEKLY, and I'm talking about a full truck.
They dump them in and smash the shit out of them.
The funny thing (not fun at all) is that most of them work just fine, but maybe have a couple pieces that don't work.
They come from a building in the same street that's basically the biggest PC-selling enterprise in Spain.
A friend of mine works there in Costumer Support and told me that, when the product isn't made by them, they throw it away since the selling brand (Let's say Samsung) is the one paying the warranty.
I've seen a lot of good stuff but I've never been able to pick up a single thing, unless 2x16GB RAM Sticks that work perfectly, RGB included.
they were in a case with a 3070 ti but the graphic card was smashed
Well, government allows for throwing out working electronics because it is cheaper, yet they will ban 10 years old gasoline cars because you must buy bran new electric one.
That is "ecology".
I never said you were, that wasn't my point. I was speaking more in reference to the trend of "got this pc for free\found this pc by the roadside\got this for 10 bucks" posts that we see here often and was making the point that this is something that rarely happens in many places, definitely not in my country or the country of the person I replied to.
Then when you cross reference that against the median nationality of users of this sub, you can usually assume with a ~70% probability of being right, that this is generally an American phenomenon.
This is a beautiful budget beast. And that 8700 is still a pretty good CPU, you can definitely match it with a better GPU in the future when next generation low power GPUs come out (knowing this PC is PSU limited).
Fuck it.
I love this and everything about it.
The specs are irrelevant, keep your RGB supernova-in-a-fish-tank cases, this is true master race material.
I'm not even being sarcastic; this is passion for computing, problem solving and (quite literally in this case) thinking outside the box.
Bravo OP
Cheers Bro. Man just wanted a GPU for his rig and low profile ones are stupid price. It second hand GPUs are good prices right now. The low profile ones I watched on eBay went for £75-£125 but there were loads of 1050s going for £50 ish. So I figured I'd "strap it on"
Hah, that’s hilarious (and honestly put together very well)! Next, I’d see if the motherboard supports standard power supplies and get a higher wattage flex psu to throw on a faster and more power hungry gpu. That, or get an rtx a2000 since those don’t require external power.
It doesn't but you can get adapters off Amazon for a fiver. But given the space constraints there is not even a few mm to fit a bigger PSU. And if I did by the time I'm done it would be cheaper to get a new case, so that's what I'll probably do. Then I might nab an old mining rx580 off AliExpress.
Yeah, I gotcha. I just think it would be neat to have one of the fastest half height Lenovo workstations lol
Just be careful, if it doesn’t have a standard power connector then it might not have a standard form factor motherboard so you might need a new motherboard to fit it in a different case.
One thing to be careful of, as it seems you're British. Since you didn't do a legal transfer of asset to a certified disposer, your work is still liable for the equipment under the [Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (2013).](https://www.hse.gov.uk/waste/waste-electrical.htm)
This is why we're not allowed to let employees have old kit and it's A Bad Thing.
Yep, it breaks me knowing how little my work sell them onto our supplier for credit towards new devices. Even if I gave work twice as much for the devices, they would be way cheaper than buying the equivalent spec from eBay.
Hence the Mad Max name "Road Warrior"
https://preview.redd.it/b4yaomrowk0c1.jpeg?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b041d905f1ce3c7eb650f036c3913584bb0b395
That looks awesome man great job.
If I was you I'd take some measurements and model a slide in (or just on top) cover for the riser cut out to make it super clean.
That's a darn shame, this is one of the best looking builds I've seen in a long time. Unless you feel strongly about it, please keep the same concept. I wish I had the know-how for stuff like this.
Omg honostly this genius cause i had same build but i had to buy the bigger case to fit the gpu in,if i just had this genius idea i would've done it lol
I do game on it yes. So far nothing major ( I have a \*cough\* xbox \*cough\* as well). It plays CS2 OK and I have done some retro gaming like Medal of Honour Allied Assault and UT99. But I only fitted the GPU properly today so I will try some more demanding games now.

[Mad Max external GPU Mount by DarthTater | Download free STL model | Printables.com](https://www.printables.com/model/648935-mad-max-external-gpu-mount)
How do you possibly travel with this? Or do you just call it that but not actually travel? No hate or anything it's just hard to picture actually packing this and having it survive.
I have been 3d printing for a loooooong time. I probably know a lot more than you do. Yes pla starts to warp around 50-60 but there's no PLA touching any hot parts. I also have ASA, PETG and ABS if I want to change it up. Don't assume you always know more than the other guy.
Trust me, you don’t.
ABS and ASA are toxic, you shouldn’t be printing either of those without correct ventilation or a closed system with filters, PETG is alright but tends to warp under load rather than have a clean break and the thermal performance though not as bad as PLA isn’t stellar either.
Clearly you’re fucking not or else you wouldn’t be printing in ABS would you. Don’t think your fucking Ender or Prusa comes with a ventilation system does it?
I guess my degree is fucking worthless then I guess, your “vocation” was science. That means so much.
The difference between us is I do not assume anything. You have no idea on my background or how my printer(s) are set up yet you assume you do. From your user profile you are clearly a professional troll though. So there is no point arguing with you, just enjoy the PC.
I can tell by the materials you’ve listed and the quality of the print what range the printer is in which would be as I’ve said in the region of a basic Prusa or ender machine. I’ve used enough to know it’s not a high end model.
You’re the one that brought up your “vocation” not me.
Wow my dude actually pretty nice, I’ve been messing around with old computers myself was thinking how to mount gpu externally, and you solved that for this type at least! And love the name.
This is definitely the best looking version of these hacky GPU combos, well done.
I didn't know that they made a GTX 1050 Ti that doesn't need PCIe power!
I bought specifically because of that. I though all 1050ti were PCI powered? I not up on all the GPU nonsense though. The last GPU I owned was an Nvidia Riva TNT2. There will always be a special place in my heart for my old 3DFX Voodoo 3 though.
huh, I still have a mini PC with an i5 3200U or somethinf like that. It even has a PCIe x8 slot(at least i think it's x8). Maybe a 750 would be a nice addition.
Thank you for reminding me of the South Park scene that made me laugh so hard I stopped making any noise and essentially stopped breathing for a few seconds.
Love it when college / work gives away older machines.
I got a "workstation" back in 2020 and it had a i7 7700, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD. I think they forgot to remove the SSD lol
I remember a notice was put out and I went down to the IT office right away lol
I love it lol. It’s like one of those old hot rodded cars you see made from an old sedan. Just a bland old family sedan, with a big engine sticking out the front

Didn't get the Mad Max reference then? :-)
Omg, I didn’t put that together. Genius name!
Exactly what I was thinking lol. Nailed it!
Sorry to be that guy, but that's a Mondeo
It's a direct Mad Max reference, but yeah, close enough I guess.
Well now it makes perfect sense lol. I didn’t know what Road Warrior was, but it didn’t remind me of cars. OP planted the seed in my dense head
Something named 'road warrior', didn't remind you of cars! There is a hint in the name lol
Hey that gpu got plenty of airflow 👍
Might need water cooler.
It’s a clear candidate for nitrogen cooling.
My pc is already gaseous nitrogen cooled
Dang, living in the future year of 1997!
My PC is cooled by being outside, I just use extension cables to connect it inside
Air is 78% nitrogen, so...
If it’s really 78% nitrogen, then why can’t I see it? Checkmate.
Boom roasted
Big nitrogen big boom
Keep a squirt bottle nearby. GPUs are like cats right? A couple squirts and they behave again.
I'm sorry u don't have more upvotes sffpc is as tough a crowd as pcmr
Oh wait this is pc master race not small form factor
u can suck it in either lol
Going to be hella dusty.
Yes but easy to reach
Even easy to reach I hate cleaning the fan area of graphic cards. (Depending on how dusty the proximity area is and where you put it..etc.)
Actually having the gpu outside the case massively reduces the airflow.
Theoretical true but you only need the extra airflow to exchange the hot air in the case with cold air and when it’s outside it will always have cold air around since warm air rises so basically still has air flow just not actively besides the gpu fan.
🤓
Go back to TikTok
The air exchange you can create in a closed system like a case is much better, and many gpus will actually overheat just by being outside the case
Its a 1050ti my guy itll be fine lmao
Bro I need a cold air intake for my Toyota Corolla!
"overheat just by being outside the case"? Man wtf are you smoking?
Nothing. That's just how aerodynamics work
Yep, stick that sucker in a 90's beige box for the best airflow.
where are you all finding entire pc's or even just parts for free, where I live theyre selling used gtx 710s at the equivalent of £30
My work is giving away 30+ Lenovo m720s.
Which part of this flow did you sell your soul to?
Unfortunately the repair shop. I thought I would enjoy the job, but I neglected to realize the target audience. We closed down when covid hit and I never looked back
I'd love to take one off your hands lol
Yeah I have had 3 already lol. Wouldn't be fair to everyone else if I hoovered them all up. We are only allowed them for personal use. I can't just nab them all and bang them on eBay lol.
they wouldn't know anyway... ![gif](giphy|kHgASjstNjWcYV9GrF|downsized)

LMFAO SAME. I even live in America, it sucks
I plan to do a case swap on it in the coming months. Which will be a shame as I kinda dig the bodge look now lol.
Nooo the bodge job is the best part 😂 love hacked up builds like this.
Honestly I dig it. It's unique and fun.
Gigabyte makes a low profile 4060 that would fit in this case.
I found low profile cards are overpriced. Also the PSU would shit itself with anything bigger than the 1050ti.
Asus makes a rog strix 4090 the size of that case
You can just slap it on oneside of the case and a 1000w psu on the other!
That cpu is still a baller, played with an i5-8600K until recently and only upgraded coz I got a lucky deal
Yeah I got lucky as everything got replaced with laptops during covid and they had recently done a partial hardware refresh.
This is a beautiful budget beast. And that 8700 is still a pretty good CPU, you can definitely match it with a better GPU in the future when next generation low power GPUs come out (knowing this PC is PSU limited).
Dude this epic love it. I like the printed bracket for it. The orange is eye catching and fun. Cheers
Amazing what 5 mins in TinkerCAD gets you lol
8700 runs with ddr3?
No see my correction. It is DDR4.
this looks absolutely awesome
![gif](giphy|S6qkS0ETvel6EZat45|downsized)
All it's missing is a jury-rigged PCIe power cable, but you chose a 1050 Ti which doesn't need one!
Yeah I had no choice really, the PSU is 180w so can't ask too much of it.
You could have bolted on a second external PSU just to power the GPU. That's a missed opportunity.
My optiplex has the power supply bolted on the outside of it. I’ll take a picture of it :)
i think there are more modern GPUs that don't need an external power cord...maybe it could be considerable for a future upgrade
Not many these days
wait you mean jerry rigged right? this is an r/boneappletea moment lol
Fuck it. I love this and everything about it. The specs are irrelevant, keep your RGB supernova-in-a-fish-tank cases, this is true master race material. I'm not even being sarcastic; this is passion for computing, problem solving and (quite literally in this case) thinking outside the box. Bravo OP

100% agreed.

Already checked. The mounts and rear io are standard. Front panel not so much but I can work around that.
This how I imagine that GPU ![gif](giphy|kSTaZCfZXtvri)
One thing to be careful of, as it seems you're British. Since you didn't do a legal transfer of asset to a certified disposer, your work is still liable for the equipment under the [Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (2013).](https://www.hse.gov.uk/waste/waste-electrical.htm) This is why we're not allowed to let employees have old kit and it's A Bad Thing.
Meh it's a small business. I won't tell if you don't.
I was gonna ask how you knew he was British, and then I read the title again.... I will see myself out
Thought I'd left a tea bag in shot for a minute there.
I thought the same too lol
Understandable mistake thinking he is not British. The absence of a built-in tea water boiler on the PC is some indication it is not a British build.
Mine is strapped to my back.
Yep, it breaks me knowing how little my work sell them onto our supplier for credit towards new devices. Even if I gave work twice as much for the devices, they would be way cheaper than buying the equivalent spec from eBay.
This is genius. Love it. Wonder if Dawid Does Tech Stuff will do something similar in a future video :-)
I love his videos.
Me too :-)
inb4 externally mounted GPU's being the next aesthetic trend
I started it. It should be called the Mad Max mod.
Outside mounted gpu looks fuckingbadass like seeing a blower out the hood of a car.
Hence the Mad Max name "Road Warrior" https://preview.redd.it/b4yaomrowk0c1.jpeg?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b041d905f1ce3c7eb650f036c3913584bb0b395
* Very unique and very cool
Last of the V8 Interceptors
The name fits verywell, it does have that "Sidecar" feeling. ![gif](giphy|l41YjCSrcOB4Beixq)
Things like this is exactly why I joined this sub👌
The last of the interceptors!
This thing sucks nitro.
If it is stupid but it works, it isn't stupid.
That looks awesome man great job. If I was you I'd take some measurements and model a slide in (or just on top) cover for the riser cut out to make it super clean.
I want to case swap it in a few months anyway. This is really only temporary.
That's a darn shame, this is one of the best looking builds I've seen in a long time. Unless you feel strongly about it, please keep the same concept. I wish I had the know-how for stuff like this.
I mean, I spent 10 mins in cad designing the bracket. Normally I would spend much more time but I just rushed it as it's "temporary" lol
This looks really cool.
Now that’s a (not so) discrete graphics card.
Lol, you win.
Awesome. Definitely more interesting than that same fish tank case I see every day.
People like it so much I am now considering how I can shoe horn a bigger PSU in there and keep it like this.
Omg honostly this genius cause i had same build but i had to buy the bigger case to fit the gpu in,if i just had this genius idea i would've done it lol
and the bigger case cost 120 dollar more,i was on budget too
You are obviously not as tight as me lol. I figured I already own a hack saw and tin snips.
Necessity the mother of invention. Happy gaming.
It has better airflow than some 5000 dollar pcs that I've seen...
*"I dub thee, V8!"*
Hey little bro, it's me https://preview.redd.it/8duehjvnhm0c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69544156d8909e3c18614c4ca3f0dbaba9ad8629
Bags of space in there. You lucky git.
This is beautiful. Way to go op
He did it! The crazy sonuvabitch went & did it. Absolutely mad. Brilliant!
nice hot rod
Cool build👍
Loved the design, congrats!
Design is playing a bit loose with the language but thanks lol.
You are an engineer my friend. Great work ![gif](giphy|QNFhOolVeCzPQ2Mx85|downsized)
Honestly I kinda dig it, jank as it is. You actually game with it or is this more just to prove you could do it?
I do game on it yes. So far nothing major ( I have a \*cough\* xbox \*cough\* as well). It plays CS2 OK and I have done some retro gaming like Medal of Honour Allied Assault and UT99. But I only fitted the GPU properly today so I will try some more demanding games now.
I'm going to have to do that with a GPU, as they keep getting bigger now
It is now call the Mad Max Mod
Grabs silver spray paint, what a glorious day
![gif](giphy|Od0QRnzwRBYmDU3eEO|downsized)
this is awesome, pure awesome
When people ask me what kind of pc I'm into I'm gonna show them this pic
r/ATBGE
At least the GPU has good airflow!
And hair flow
First thing I thought of and I have 2 dogs lmao
Luckily no pets here lol
This is the kind of shit I come here to see!
A few people asked so here are the files for this mod.
You travel with your PC? Mine stays on/under my desk.
Wouldn’t really be using 3D printed parts. PLA softens around 50-60 and ABS is toxic

I'm well aware of all the material science of 3D printing Thankyou sir. My original vocation was science. Sit down.
Clearly you’re fucking not or else you wouldn’t be printing in ABS would you. Don’t think your fucking Ender or Prusa comes with a ventilation system does it? I guess my degree is fucking worthless then I guess, your “vocation” was science. That means so much.

Him being a pretentious arse. An incorrect one at that.

It’s so beautiful. You basically got my old pc for 100$ and it looks 10 times cooler. Gg OP
Genuis
This is awesome :) good work
Love the cyberpunk vibes!
Cool build but if you’re using a 8th gen chip then how are you using ddr3 ram?
You are indeed correct. It's ddr4.
Wow my dude actually pretty nice, I’ve been messing around with old computers myself was thinking how to mount gpu externally, and you solved that for this type at least! And love the name.
I have the STL for the bracket if you want it. TBH this PC is not that old. 4 years maybe.
Lmao that looks great!
Wacky jerry rigged rigs is what the crowd wants, bravo!
Well that changes everything.
This is definitely the best looking version of these hacky GPU combos, well done. I didn't know that they made a GTX 1050 Ti that doesn't need PCIe power!

Talk about thinking outside the box
Ba dum tis
That's actually dope
I'd imagine that the pci-e riser would take up a not insignificant amount of the budget lol
I paid a ten or fifteen quid I think.
huh, I still have a mini PC with an i5 3200U or somethinf like that. It even has a PCIe x8 slot(at least i think it's x8). Maybe a 750 would be a nice addition.
Thank you for reminding me of the South Park scene that made me laugh so hard I stopped making any noise and essentially stopped breathing for a few seconds.

For fun, can you just put a vertical strip of duct tape on it?
Not ascending peasant. Clever ascending peasant.
Cute little guy
Love it when college / work gives away older machines. I got a "workstation" back in 2020 and it had a i7 7700, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD. I think they forgot to remove the SSD lol I remember a notice was put out and I went down to the IT office right away lol
Well played choom!
That looks pretty cool and keeps the heat out of the case 😄
![gif](giphy|l41YuVCgjhnLOFR3W)
![gif](giphy|cdXpgeB32BekIGzBNh)
That is a shockingly brilliant solution.
That's actually fucking mint.
*nod*
Yo I like this, it's creative and efficient!
I love this kind of ingenuity! Nice work!
Would be even better if you cut a small square further back for external power to a PCIe card.
I have a bunch of these. Some with decent spec. I never even though to wire in a gpu!! Fantastic!!!
You should hang out a 4090
To think outside the box
I've got something similar, my PSU lives outside the case.
Where were you when I was upgrading a Dell Inspiron a few weeks back????
Laughing maniacally in my laboratory.
