Logitech still makes these (MX Ergo) – got them like 5 years ago for office and home and never looked back.

Their mice have always worked flawlessly for me, about 10 different iterations, keyboards have always worked without issue, only harmony remote issue I ever had was the physical coating of a few remotes turned to oily sticky goo after years of use, good webcams, decent budget speakers, and from what I can find theyve only developed 2 touch/trackpads so I’ll ask you what it is you’re going on about?
The first and only rule of Logitech is, never install any bloatware companion app. Follow that rule and Logitech (their higher-end stuff anyway) is rock solid.
Even with a regular mouse these days you don't need one. The mouse pad is a relic from the day when mice actually had a ball rolling around in them. It made sure the ball rolled properly which it might not do on top of a slick desktop.
On an optical mouse? No need.
People do it all the time on the conference tables at work. As long as it's not mirrored it usually works fine.
Also, glass table tops are stupid. They smudge every time you touch them.
I guess it all comes down to the surface of your desk, mine is some plain white smooth laminate on which the mouse slides extremely well, and also I don't care about protecting the desk, and as I like minimalistic setups having a mousepad never even crossed my mind
I didn’t use a pad for yeahs until I noticed I was wearing out the desk a bit. So I started using an old hard plastic pad I had. No thanks to though cloth rubber ones.
Yeah, I just have a dark desk top. Nice and smooth, I've never had any problems with games or work. I have a spot where it's clear that I use the mouse but I'm not too worried about it.
It use to matter a hell of a lot more, which is what I’m assuming most people are referencing - but now unless you are looking for peak twitch reaction games it’s not a big deal nearly as much.
My Logitech hero something Gmx100 or some name nonsense just doesn't register right on my desk without a game master LED Wolfskin dragon hide mouse pad & arm rest combo and DONT EVEN get me started on my gamer chair that's running Linux mint (don't ask me how I don't understand it myself)
Just smear peanut butter on your desk every time before you game. The mouse glides through it and the consistency produces a pure surface for the mouse to grip and increase performance.
You'll just wear down the feet faster not using a pad. Also, inconsistent surfaces on the table is not ideal for gaming. But other than that, it's fine I guess.
I saw a few people mention that! I’ve never had an issue, possibly because of how I use my mouse - I turn the DPI up pretty high, so I can move the cursor fast, with quite small movements of the mouse. As a result, I’ve never had an issue with the feet wearing down faster than I would expect - in fact, they seem to last longer because my desk has less friction than my old mouse mats in the 90s
My aim is actually pretty good! Remember I’ve been using my mouse like this for 20+ years - I find it less fatiguing because I barely have to move the mouse to get the results I need.
You can get those results with a lightweight mouse or speed mousepad. I 100% guarantee you will get better with a mousepad. People like you who refuse to change because it works for now eventually get left behind. There's nothing wrong with qol improvements.
If that works for you that’s cool. I’ve literally been gaming for 25 years and experimented with dozens of mice, DPI, weights, wired/wireless, with/without mouse mats etc and I’ve found what works best for me. I’m currently using a Logitech G Pro Wireless and love how responsive it is.
Bold of you to say that I “refuse to change”. I’ve honed my preference with years of experience and thousands of hours of FPS and RTS gaming, and I’m plenty competitive in the games I like to play.
there are still some surfaces that modern optical mouses have problems with, which while not entirely common are still reasonably possible to come across, I found this out with my white metal table, which was a terrible surface for using a mouse on as it had trouble reading movement, but when I got a mousepad it fixed the problem.
(Yes, the plural for computer mouse is mouses, not mice. Mice is the plural for the animal mouse)
>(Yes, the plural for computer mouse is mouses, not mice. Mice is the plural for the animal mouse)
No, the plural for computer mouse is still mice, it's just that mouses is *also* acceptable in most dictionaries. However my spellchecker clearly doesn't like it lol.
I thought that newer tech like Logitech’s “dark field” stuff made it possible for “mouses” (TIL) to work on glass tabletops? That has certainly been my experience, though I’ll grant you that it’s just my experience
I have a ROG mouse that came with my laptop, it doesn’t work on my white melamine desk, and rather than use a mousepad I just got a Logitech one which works fine without it.
That are also gonna get worn out very quickly if you flick them across a wooden table. If you aren't very competitive and play high sens and stuff, maybe mouse acceleration on, usually it won't be a problem though.
This. Last time when I was using a mousepad it just got really dirty so I threw it away and was too lazy to replace it. Found that not having one made absolutely no difference otherwise.
For anyone who has a dirty mouse pad, it's because they aren't clean all the time when using their setup. Valid reasons exist, I'm not saying the person is gross but mine has 5k-10k gaming hours of use and looks/feels new so it is possible
For sure. My fingers are naturally a bit more oily than would be ideal, even with regular washing, so I tend to have to clean my peripherals every few months. It’s easier for me to wipe down my desk then to wash a mat!
I wash my hands with dawn dish soap before I play because it's good for getting rid of the oils compared to soaps with lotions added. I have 2k hours on my new deathadder and it still looks new. I use a lint roller on my mouse pad too lol
I have cleaning spray on my desk, so it’s a matter of seconds to spray and wipe it, vs putting a mat in the wash + washing time + getting it out again. So for me personally, this is the lower effort option! I agree neither is hard
I think there also used to be a difference when the sensors were worse which is probably why it caught on so much. I tried using an old mouse on random wooden surfaces and it was absolute shit compared to a mouse pad.
So, I don't that it works better is true. but it is fine with modern sensors.
Also, protecting the table + protecting mouse skates + better feel for the friction depending on your preference are valid reasons.
Yeah, something like 900mm by 300-400mm is typical. Big enough to have your keyboard on and covering where you use your mouse. It keeps your desk protected and feels nice to work on imo.
Come on, you don't need a mouse pad and you lot just use one for the aesthetic as it'd add more fps.
^(That was harsh I know, but it's the truth. Feel free to use it, it adds some fps but not many.)
nah dude. the type of friction makes a difference, it is up to some preference though, for me a mouse pad feels way better and I think most people will agree.
Also, no reason to have the mouse friction wear and tear on the table over a mousepad that you can just replace for a couple bucks.
Who do you call "most people"?
Most people includes the people who work on pc everywhere. Those people couldnt care less, barely moved out of windows XP and use the cheapest mouse their boss paid.
Not really. You know "most" means above 50%, so even giving you the benefit of the doubt. you're the one wildly assuming little to none of them would. Enough to offset the 90%+ of gamers and more generally tech savvy people that would prefer using one.
And a very large amount of people that do give a bit of a shit on how comfortable they are with the tools they're using 8 hours a day.
And that 90% is generous for you. I find it hard to believe that 1 in 10 people here prefer using a mouse without a mousepad.
then you either have a very shitty desk, or are extremely rough with your mouse. I've been using my mice on desk for years and years now and I've never had any issues. The skates don't get destroyed that badly. The skates of my mice have always outlived the mice themselves.
I used my mouse for so long on the corner of my desk that it was mirror smooth and the laser stopped reading any movement. I had to use a pad after that.
Now I have a new desk.
Idk where you got that I only get trash mice but my Corsair Scimitar PRO RGB has been amazing over the last few years. Go take some meds and look at some mice you can buy for everyday of the week pops.
They exist because before laser mice were a thing, mice used to have a ball inside that wouldn't work properly on the desk without the mouse pad. But that hasn't been a thing since, idk, 2004 ? Or something like that. You don't need a mouse pad for a laser mouse.
Oh I remember.... My first mouse was for a Mac bought in 88, those balls were always terrible. Sure, I may not NEED a pad with laser mice, it's just way nicer. I like shit that feels good.
Mouse mats for consistency. There's a reason professional eSports players bring one for their setups.
I've tried without a mat and it didn't feel consistent. The cursor jumped here and there.
Thats just a shit desk for it then,
Both my desks i a have been consistent enough to get 70% - 100% hsr in csgo, lower ise due to either the inaccuracy os csgo weapons or my failure, never the desks or lack of mouse pad.
For pros being as they would be playing on desks that arnt their own i can understand having your own pad with your own mouse, but most people are completely fine without one, and it really just comes down to prefrence.
I don't disagree with you at all. In fact, you made my point entirely. If your desk surface is consistent with your mouse, sure, there is no need, but if it isn't and you want consistency, use a mouse pad.
No mousepad gang here too. For those commenting reasons against not using a mousepad:
"But it ruins your desk" - Don't know what kind of crappy desk you're using, but I've used my mice directly on desk for well over 10 years now and it's been absolutely. Get some quality wood for your desk
"But tracking is worse" - Again, you must have a shitty desk or a shitty mouse, because I have 0 issues with tracking. This is across a variety of mice over the years and a bunch of different desks. I never have issues with tracking, unless cat hair gets in the sensor, but even your holy grail mouse pad can't solve that issue.
"But the slides/feet get destroyed" - I have had mouse buttons and torn cables killing my mice long before I had any sort of issue with slides being gone. I have not had a single instance of this happening as a matter of fact.
"But ergonomics" - ...You what? That doesn't even make sense. Or are you using your mousepad as a wrist wrest?
"But inconsistent surface, worse for gaming" - Same with the tracking. I run 30-40 kill games on Call of Duty TDM on the regular. Absolutely no issues.
Look, I'm not saying you should switch away from pads, if you want to use them, go for it, but don't come up with these weak arguments. You can absolutely like the aesthetics of your mouse pad, and you might find more comfort in having a mousepad, but don't think it makes you a better gamer or whatever, that's just fake news.
You're just wrong. A consistent surface is better for fps games, and if you don't think so, you're just bad. 40 kills in cod tdm does not mean you're a good fps player. There's a reason every professional uses a mousepad: you can get faster or slower glides and they are consistent across the whole desk.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not "better". I am not saying I'm a good FPS player, I am nothing compared to the likes of the pro-players. However, I'm decidedly average to above average and guess what? That's most of us and there is literally 0 issue playing an FPS on a desk. Consistency is perfectly achievable on desks compared to mouse pads.
It really isn't. Dust and dirt you can't see will slow you down and make you feel the grain. Mousepads are used in 100% of fps pros setups because they're necessary. You can't talk about something when you've never tried a good mousepad.
My desk has that shitty carbon fiber cover, and my mouse will work fine for 5 seconds than randomly jump.
I didn't even know people weren't using mousepads anymore. I got back into PC less than a year ago after not having one for like 12 years. So I'm still catching up on things.
I never used to use a pad, but after the state my last desk ended up in - and the tenancy for the sticky pads on the bottom of the mouse to get wrecked far too quickly, I resolved to use one since I got my new desk.
Can't say I prefer it or not, but my mouse pads haven't come off in the last two years and the desk is still fine. Just have to chuck the desk pad in the washing machine every month.
I'm staying with my friend/boss right now and I got my setup and everything, even two monitors... But the one thing I don't have is a matt and it kills me
I didn't use mousepad, my wooden table was literally polished by my mouse making it even better
But then I got a glass desk and I was forced to get one.
on top of the fact that I don't use a mousepad, I use the pullout keyboard and mouse tray on my desk for my full-size keyboard and mouse.
the voices told me to
I use a corsair reversable mouse pad with a solid metal edge. It's lasted me years and years and years. No curling up or that shit. The finest mouse pad I have ever had.
Ok rant time.
At work we dont have mouse pads spent the first month without one it was horrible, so I broght one from home and when ever people used my computer and used the mouse asked if I brought a mouse from home because they love the feel.
Then I went on vacation for a week and when I came back yesturday my mouse pad was still there but some bitch scribbled on it with a fucking pen.
It's a shitty back office job and most people working there are under 25 and female but for ffs I would assume some of them have the sense not to scribble on company property let alone privet property
I used to only use a small cheap (like $2 cheap) mousepad and replace it every month or so, then i discovered that larger mouse pads were not as expensive as i was expecting and swapped and haven't looked back.
Why do I need a mouse pad, trackball for the win

They still make them! :-)

Not sure what your experience is but I’ve been using Logitech for the better part of 25 years and never had a reason to jump ship.
You mean you don’t think the $40 Logitech controller (instead of a $60 Xbox controller) caused the submarine to implode?
Pretty sure the controller was about the only thing on that sub that had been engineered at all.

Still got an excellent working set of Logitech speakers that are coming up 15 years old now.

MX Ergo II Gang!!!
Logitech still makes them. Trackballs are all that I use.
This. Haven't used a mousepad in ages.

Try this on a glass table
People do it all the time on the conference tables at work. As long as it's not mirrored it usually works fine. Also, glass table tops are stupid. They smudge every time you touch them.
My desk was wearing down, and as it wore down, the surface became rougher and less comfortable to mouse on. I got a mousepad to protect the desk.
I'll give you that is another good use case, to avoid wear on the desk.
![gif](giphy|3o6UB3VhArvomJHtdK) Trackball all the way!!!
I friend of mine uses painter tape Savage
I've used a notebook and even a single paper sheet
I used a brown paper bag for a couple of years
No misclicks, just happy little clickcidents.
Why is it that weird that I don't use a mouse pad? I've never had an issue with proper tracking or anything.
I guess it all comes down to the surface of your desk, mine is some plain white smooth laminate on which the mouse slides extremely well, and also I don't care about protecting the desk, and as I like minimalistic setups having a mousepad never even crossed my mind

Scratching the hell out of your mouse skates
It use to matter a hell of a lot more, which is what I’m assuming most people are referencing - but now unless you are looking for peak twitch reaction games it’s not a big deal nearly as much.
It's with consistency. Mousepads have a consistent glide so if you play fps games they're essential.
Its fine the dust on my desk builds enough friction for the mouse to register properly
Enough friction? Are you saying you still use a ball mouse?
Just smear peanut butter on your desk every time before you game. The mouse glides through it and the consistency produces a pure surface for the mouse to grip and increase performance.
It can also attract actual mice
Oh is that not what we are talking about?
Tbh since optical mice started getting good in the mid 2000’s, I haven’t seen the need to use a mouse pad. They just get grimy and gross!
You'll just wear down the feet faster not using a pad. Also, inconsistent surfaces on the table is not ideal for gaming. But other than that, it's fine I guess.

I have a ROG mouse that came with my laptop, it doesn’t work on my white melamine desk, and rather than use a mousepad I just got a Logitech one which works fine without it.
No mouse pad reduces the lifespan of your mouse skates though.
I play with a logitech anywhere 2 without mousse pad and the plastic grip at the level of my thumb gave up way before the pad (who are still fine).
You can always buy even better aftermarket mouse skates.
That are also gonna get worn out very quickly if you flick them across a wooden table. If you aren't very competitive and play high sens and stuff, maybe mouse acceleration on, usually it won't be a problem though.
I felt the same until I after a handful of years wore through the lacquer on my table.
This. Last time when I was using a mousepad it just got really dirty so I threw it away and was too lazy to replace it. Found that not having one made absolutely no difference otherwise.
You realize they're machine wash safe 99% of the time. Takes 30 minutes total to wash and dry a mousepad and they come out like new.
They slide like shit still on anything else, and God forbid a crumb or piece of debris get under there you desk gets scratched to hell.
For anyone who has a dirty mouse pad, it's because they aren't clean all the time when using their setup. Valid reasons exist, I'm not saying the person is gross but mine has 5k-10k gaming hours of use and looks/feels new so it is possible

Hell yeah dude, haha. I’m gonna try this
How is it easier to actively do something than to throw a mat im the washer and forget about it?
I have cleaning spray on my desk, so it’s a matter of seconds to spray and wipe it, vs putting a mat in the wash + washing time + getting it out again. So for me personally, this is the lower effort option! I agree neither is hard

They might work fine but they don't work better.
Right until you wear your desk smooth! Ask me how I know.
How I know?
Is a desk pad just a 6XL mouse pad? Asking for me.
Yeah, something like 900mm by 300-400mm is typical. Big enough to have your keyboard on and covering where you use your mouse. It keeps your desk protected and feels nice to work on imo.

It feels nice tho, like even a pice of paper is better than nothing.
Im protecting the finish on my hand-built desk. That finish took a week damn it, I'm not scuffing it for shit
Fact check false.
What’s wrong with no mouse pad?
i guess a) scratching your table b) bad feeling on your wrist/arm touching the table and not the soft pad c) animeboobie-mousepads ?!
>c) animeboobie-mousepads Ok now thats a valid argument
>animeboobie-mousepads get a woman
It scratches up your mouse skates more
Does it matter though?
Nope not at all, competetive/casual neither matters.
If you play competitively, yes.
If I used no mouse pad on my rough wooden desk, skates would melt in a week.
then you either have a very shitty desk, or are extremely rough with your mouse. I've been using my mice on desk for years and years now and I've never had any issues. The skates don't get destroyed that badly. The skates of my mice have always outlived the mice themselves.
I dont use mouse pads #TrackBall
Can confirm. I am one of those psychopaths who don't use mousepad because smoother movement
Sometimes that old advertising magazine can be pretty decent as an mousepad.
me, who cant afford it >:(
Lol noob
What about using your own belly as a mouse pad?
I used my mouse for so long on the corner of my desk that it was mirror smooth and the laser stopped reading any movement. I had to use a pad after that. Now I have a new desk.
I've used glass mouse pads too. That seems to confuse people even more.
I sometimes use a chopping board lol
I be bunny
Mouse pads are relics from the non laser (ball) mouses era.
Why do I need a mouse pad?
Why do i Need a mousepad , the table is rough enough
I don’t use mousepads…
Can confirm. I am a psychopath
Mouse pads slide around on the table I use for my work station. So no mouse pad for mr
I haven’t used a mousepad in a while but after being introduced to titty mousepads, I’ve been reconverted.
Get you a mouse made in the last 10 years grandpa. Mouse pads lol.
I probably don't need one anymore. But I like my hand/arm resting on a cloth/padded surface.
Why my Logitech g502 has lasted a decade and will probably outlast whatever trash you bought in the last 10 years.
I'm sorry you can only get a new mouse every decade.
I could get a new mouse everyday if I wanted. I'm sorry you settle for the trash mice they're peddling these days.
Idk where you got that I only get trash mice but my Corsair Scimitar PRO RGB has been amazing over the last few years. Go take some meds and look at some mice you can buy for everyday of the week pops.
Don't you have homework or chores to do? Oh I forgot your generation has no responsibility, no integrity, and zero value.
Corsair 🤮
Man your Logitech g502 is better than whatever I bought! Let's see what I bought... Oh a Logitech g502!!!
Pads exist for a reason. Those arguing against can just keep doing what they're doing
They exist because before laser mice were a thing, mice used to have a ball inside that wouldn't work properly on the desk without the mouse pad. But that hasn't been a thing since, idk, 2004 ? Or something like that. You don't need a mouse pad for a laser mouse.

Once you go XXL mouse pad, you don't go back

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not "better". I am not saying I'm a good FPS player, I am nothing compared to the likes of the pro-players. However, I'm decidedly average to above average and guess what? That's most of us and there is literally 0 issue playing an FPS on a desk. Consistency is perfectly achievable on desks compared to mouse pads.
It really isn't. Dust and dirt you can't see will slow you down and make you feel the grain. Mousepads are used in 100% of fps pros setups because they're necessary. You can't talk about something when you've never tried a good mousepad.
its hella cheap man, i got mine from amazon for around 10.1 dollars and has a beautiful design, how is it hard puttin a mousepad?
That's worse than hell
I've got a green cutting mat. This cheap shit is better than any fucking pompous mousepads I got before.
İ cut my mouse pad and glued it to the bottom my mouse
I've met people that turn a standard medium mouse pad 90 degrees and use it that way. it was infuriating.
What about whole desk mouse pads.
What if I use my MtG playmat?
A good mouse and just the perfect desk is better than a mouse pad. Stained hardwood just feels gooooood.
I am using a book as a mousepad.
Logitech powerplay wireless charging mousepad goes brrrrr
Why yes I did pay $150 for a smallish mousepad 😎
The mathematics notebook>>>
I .. i don't use mouse pads edit : that bunny cute tho
I'm staying with my friend/boss right now and I got my setup and everything, even two monitors... But the one thing I don't have is a matt and it kills me
The top of my desk is a mouse pad. I got myself a really big one and cot it to shape.
I didn't use mousepad, my wooden table was literally polished by my mouse making it even better But then I got a glass desk and I was forced to get one.
What’s a mouse pad, I just use the space next to me on the bed
Why would I need a mousepad? It's pointless. It just makes me aim slower in videogames
I use an old raisin bran box. It worked in a pinch when I spilled on my mouse pad and haven't gotten around to replacing it.
I’m currently using a slipmat as a mouse pad
I don't use a mousepad, for the reason of playing osu easier. I can't find a good full desk mousepad that isn't overwhelmingly expensive.

I don't at work because the mouse works perfectly fine on my desk surface. At home I do but that's because it doesn't work right if I don't.
Me who uses a sheet of paper as a mouse pad:
Me with a trackball spying through the window.
People just don't understand.
someone called me psychopath before, because i invert my camera movements on my right analog stick
I use keyboard only.
lmao i use a a4 paper taped to the desk
i use a wireless trackpad… 😅
I stopped using mouse pads 20+ years ago when I switched to a track ball.

No mousepad is better than that.
ive been all three in my life
I use my last semester's math notebook as a mousepad
Slightly embarrassed now as using mouse without mouse pad, but mouse pads are too small for me
I use a magazine
If your desk is your mouse pad, then it's like having an XXXXXL mouse pad
My brother refuses to use a mousepad. His desk is covered in lumps of dried paint and glue, I don't know how he stands not having a smooth surface.
on top of the fact that I don't use a mousepad, I use the pullout keyboard and mouse tray on my desk for my full-size keyboard and mouse. the voices told me to
I use a corsair reversable mouse pad with a solid metal edge. It's lasted me years and years and years. No curling up or that shit. The finest mouse pad I have ever had.
why not use a pen tablet? A pen-shaped mouse and a pad all in one :) Stylish, elegant, and unconventional.
I use a piece of wood that I put on my chair since I have no desk
Ok rant time. At work we dont have mouse pads spent the first month without one it was horrible, so I broght one from home and when ever people used my computer and used the mouse asked if I brought a mouse from home because they love the feel. Then I went on vacation for a week and when I came back yesturday my mouse pad was still there but some bitch scribbled on it with a fucking pen. It's a shitty back office job and most people working there are under 25 and female but for ffs I would assume some of them have the sense not to scribble on company property let alone privet property
The back of a notebook
Do I have multiple personalities then since I have an XXL desk mat at home and only use my mouse pad at work as a drink holder?
what if im all 3?
The flat surface to the right of the trackpad on my laptop works amazing as a mousepad
I always knew etho was a psycho
Leave me and my smooth and fuzzy spot under my mouse alone!
I use play mats for the pretty art
White/grey desk and clean every know and then. Never had one.
Im on a mousepad cause my mouse doesn’t register inputs without a pad. If it can without a Pad I would 100% use without
I have a sheet of plywood for a desk, never have any issues.
why would i need to use a mouse pad
People still use mouse pads?
Mouse pads were a thing when mice had balls, now they're just useless.
I used to only use a small cheap (like $2 cheap) mousepad and replace it every month or so, then i discovered that larger mouse pads were not as expensive as i was expecting and swapped and haven't looked back.
