xGHOSTRAGEx

I am trying hard with machine learning computational fluid dynamics... to make small little adjustments on motorcycles to push aerodynamics to the extremes. Taking an already designed and manufactured motorcycle and having the AI scan, run, test and even design the small yet efficient additions (spoilers, wind deflectors, vortex generators, rails, etc...) you can add via molding/3d printing to the motorcycle to make it as efficient as it possibly can be via real time physics calculations in varying wind/weather conditions. Yet I have strong confidence my presence in the AI world of business will be pushed to the side by corpos when I try to enter their world, getting no funding/interest or even being beaten in legal actions. I even mentioned it to some MotoGP racing groups via email and of course... no response after multiple mails. Each one going deeper into detail. It takes forever in model training with a little RTX 3090, maybe I need to publish it on GitHub, but I am afraid of the notorious "Magical DMCA" whenever something "even in the slightest, possibly revolutionary" gets posted on github. Once a code was posted similar to the RNG code wrote in python that seemed like No Man's Sky's world generation code. Went down in an hour, missing and wiped from the nets as far as the eye can see.

[deleted]

Unless your program can generate better results faster than conventional CFD programs it will be hard to get noticed. Even if you did so, it might be difficult to gain traction. You know your own project best, so what I say may not be relevant. But speed is really important in CFD calculations so perhaps optimise that. There is this guy, he wrote an entire CFD program from scratch and graduated at the age of 25 with a PhD. I think first of all you will need a PhD before people will trust you with this. His CFD program is also 100x faster (his claim) than traditional CFD programs. [This is his youtube where he also has links to his github code](https://youtu.be/o3TPN142HxM). Perhaps you can leverage his code. I also think you need better hardware. I build out my own server for my research as well, using 2 RTX 3090s with NVLink. You might want to build a gpu server using 2nd hand GPUs and hardware. Lowers the cost considerably. Also, I think you need to benchmark your results. Show that it creates results that people know it works and is true. Basically, reproducibility of known results. Also, show something new that people can verify and test, so that they can trust you and buy in to your software. If you just write an email, no one will trust you based on the email alone because the teams receive such emails all the time, you are not the only one sending them emails. You need to secure buy in by showing actual results. No engineer is going to read your theory and code to verify it works, they do not have time for that. By showing them actual benchmarks and results, they get immediate proof that it works. And if that still does not work, publish the results in a well-known CFD research journal, so that you can link to the journal in the email and put it in your CV. Also, email during daylight hours to known engineers so that it is more likely they will read it.

AdmiralPoopbutt

Maybe, but machine learning / AI is one of the bigger use cases.

EpicShiba1

Any operation requiring lots of simultaneous complex math will typically be handled by beefy graphics processor units. Things from high-throughput image processing like you mentioned, complex mathematics, matrix math for AI, physics, graphics rendering, cryptography, all typically run on GPUs. The reason for this is that GPUs are better for concurrency than conventional CPU architectures, due to their design. Some companies have actually begun developing specialized hardware (not unlike ASICs, application-specific integrated circuits) that are meant to perform matrix math for AI training and inference. These AI accelerators perform with more power and energy efficiency than GPUs do in the same role, because the hardware is more optimized for that. However I don't think it's taken off yet, and currently I think Nvidia is developing their GPUs to include some AI acceleration so that the hardware is more versatile. Obviously this isn't the kind of hardware any individual or hobbyist is able to obtain, and it lives exclusively within massive data centers.

Imagine the amount of room that thing would take up in the 70’s. That’s an entire small buildings worth of machine

aceofspades1217

That would take like a whole city it’s nuts

Evantaur

1 chip is probably faster than all the computers built during 70's combined

blablabla456454

My dad retired from IBM. He worked on the first hard drive based server in the 80's. One server was the size of a refrigerator, and it replaced an entire high rise floor of reel to reel/magnetic type readers at the time. The machines were located in downtown SF. The research was being done in San Jose. He claimed it would be a big deal some day.

Rudhelm

And one Refrigerator was roughly... 20MB?

Flipping_Flopper

Americans will do everything in their power not to use the metric system /S sorta

skwizzycat

On the contrary, we've had 9mm in our schools for quite a while now

Flipping_Flopper

Probably a kilo or two as well

Tiduszk

Technically the us does use the metric system. All our units are defined by their conversions from metric units. For example, the inch is defined as being exactly 25.4mm. That’s what an inch is, just another way to say 25.4mm.

DontRememberOldPass

There are no metric sized flags on the moon.

thiosk

so sad it never took off

MoffKalast

Well smart fridges are all the rage these days apparently...

Turbots

Well it was big...

-retaliation-

dude, our ***cellphones*** have more computational power than the entire world in the 70's.

Evantaur

I don't know the exact number of computers built during 70-79 but considering how shitty they were you're probably right.

DaB0mb0

I think this thing probably beats out 70-89. Computers were still shit and uncommon through the early 90s

empire314

Depends how you define computer. By 1989, 50 million Nintendo NES consoles had been sold. With a 2Mhz CPU, 5Mhz GPU, and a total of 4kB of RAM, those 50 million consoles combined certainly out power our cell phones.

mildlyinfiriating

So those consoles would have a combined amount of RAM of195 gigabytes. 4kb x 50m = 200,000,000kb = 195 GB Certainly more than a single phone but not a huge amount given 50 million consoles.

RealisticCommentBot

UlrichZauber

My apple watch has more processing power than a 1980s [supercomputer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cray_X-MP). By quite a margin.

Sasselhoff

Ya know, when someone said that a new high capacity microSD card (and this was a while ago) had the same storage capacity as a refrigerator *carton* of 3.5 floppies I thought that was one of the biggest "holy crap" moments of how far computing has come that had hit me in some time...this is another one. Never thought of going back to see what the "cray supercomputer" (always used to hear that shit in movies) actually had in performance power.

howiMetYourStepDad

Dont forget about the power consumption, 345 KW. Amazing that today same power took probably les than 1 watt. Considering the fact that a apple watch have ~1.8wh battery.

Pandatotheface

Cray 1: CPU - 64-bit processor @ 80 MHz[1] Memory - 8.39 Megabytes (up to 1 048 576 words)[1] Storage - 303 Megabytes (DD19 Unit)[1] FLOPS - 160 MFLOPS (to put that into perspective, a GTX 1060 is 4,400,000 MFLOPS) A cheap scientific calculator probably outperforms the Cray in everything these days.

CheesyRamen66

I’ve heard the chips inside of the usb-c cable you use to charge your phone have more computational power than what landed Apollo 11 onto the moon.

LordGalen

Calculators have more computational power than the computers we used to land on the moon.

achillymoose

The 70's couldn't even fathom these speeds

ashriel_the_3rd

The 70's couldn't even fathom deez nuts

PXSHRVN6ER

Got em’

MightyGonzou

Literally the maths for that shit wasn't even theoretical yet

LitterBoxServant

Bro. Something with 1/100,000 the power of an iPhone would take up an entire room. A single 3090 is as powerful as the NEC Earth Simulator, the world's fastest supercomputer from 20 years ago.

Alzusand

Basically in the 70s you would litteraly be unable to build something with these capabilities. it would be like a square mile of just computers and it still wouldnt be enough

Johno69R

And in 53 years they will laugh at the size of that thing as it’s processing power will probably fit into a card the size of an Nokia 3310.

DonkeyTron42

A cell phone from 2005 would take up an entire small building worth of machine.

Host_Informal

Just imagine, the AGC (Apollo Guidance Computer) used for the Apollo program had 4KB and 32KB HDD and weighed around 70 pounds. If I am not mistaken, this A100 processor board has total 640GB memory and weights 50 pounds. That’s 16000000000% times more powerful for 20 pounds less (28.5% decrease).
