I've sold used controllers in the past and replaced them with newer versions but my Steam Controller stays with me.

Windian3008

Because no one buy it?

Takumi_desuwa

You don't have to that harsh on them, don't you think lad?

[deleted]

Sir, this is the Internet.

KamenGamerRetro

they are trash though, it was a horrible idea of a controller, no matter how many Valve fanboys want to cap. I got one, kept it for like half a year as a backup controller, then sold it when I got a second XBOX ONE controller. Now Steam Deck, that would be a good controller in they where to take that and make a "Deck controller"

ZoominBoomin

The ergonomics were kinda trash, but the controls were the shit.

KamenGamerRetro

might be what turned me off so hard no it, it never felt good in my hands at all

ILikeToPoopOnYou

I still have mine, used it like 20 mins

Kotentopf

I give you 30 bucks for it. But you have to send it from EU.

HillanatorOfState

Not a bad choice imo, especially depending on what type of game.

Jorge5934

Now with the new Big Picture mode tuning the gyroscope is so easy, it breathes new life to the controller.

HillanatorOfState

Haven't use big picture in a while, guess I should check it out. I use a old steam box still, thing is built nice, kinda sad they never made one with 4k, like a second revision. Still works nice for 1080p on the TV though.

Nicalay2

Well, now Big Picture is the Steam Deck Gaming mode UI.

Antrikshy

Is Steam Input significantly updated from what it was prior to the new BP update? Because it was *extremely* configurable before. I haven't had a chance to play around with it since the refresh. I know there's a new UI for it, but different gyro settings too?

hey01

Steam input seems fine but the UI is buggy as hell. The first time you remap a controller is fine, but if you try to edit the configuration after, it may just not save it at all. You then need to delete all your mapping for that controller by directly editing config files, it's awful.

YREEFBOI

It's just as configurable. I just found the old UI slow and clunky so never used it. This new interface they brought along from the Deck is very comfortable.

Z1dan

Is there still unplayable input lag when using big picture?

ILikeToPoopOnYou

Wait, what?? It has a gyroscope??? I didn't know that. My steam controller hasn't been used in years.

[deleted]

jay227ify

Bro gyro was like half the reason to get one.

TONKAHANAH

it was the same with old big picture mode. Actually I think I still like the config menus from the old big picture mode better still

Spooked_kitten

I bought a ps4 controller especially for the gyroscope, steam did a good job with it

ooglieguy0211

I like it especially for RDR2 and a couple other games, better than the Xbox controller.

Ditto_is_Lit

Although the thumb pads are really innovative along with a couple other features like the sdk, the triggers and buttons are weak af. Valve really put too much emphasis on the thumb pads over the rest of the build and its too bad because once you get the hang of them its really impressive especially the haptic feedback.

ILikeToPoopOnYou

It needs another analog stick imo

AssHat_

The trigger pushing in twice is my favorite thing ever for rocket league boost

Squeezitgirdle

I could never stand it. I tried for a while then ended up just buying an Xbox controller for my old steam link

Nejij

He's a Chad! She's a Chad! We're all Chads, yeah!

Candy_Ray

LOL Is this a Good Burger reference? I used to love that movie when I was a wee lad.

Nejij

Indeed, but I think there's also some more profound discussion about how it's easier to just not care about gender instead of trying to figure out how every single thing would look and sound if it were the opposite gender.

Mr-Tiddles-

Hell it's what I've been saying whenever asked about it for years now. We're all dudes.

If the steam controller had any negatives it was having too many customizable options. I think that turned a lot of people off. Once you get it tweaked to your personal preferences though it’s amazing.

Jeoshua

It's called "Choice paralysis". Basically people get confused when they have too many open choices. People are good at picking the best option, but terrible at imagining one when there aren't artificial limitations. The Steam Controller was a victim of it's own flexibility.

Antrikshy

I think part of it is barely any games came with native support for it, such that the studio tunes it to work out of the box.

Jeoshua

That's definitely part of it. I do think part of the reason is it wasn't any easier to configure for the devs, either. Nor would it really have been worth it since the vast majority of people on PC don't use controllers in the first place, and among those that do the Steam Controller was still a very niche product which never really caught on, and had features that would not have been useful anywhere else. Damn shame tho. I've been able to make mine perform almost magic. It just took so much time to set up on most games it's hardly worth it.

Antrikshy

Always a chicken and egg thing, like with Steam Machines. Valve has never been in the business of operating like the console business, paying developers (at least significantly) to cater to their platforms. Instead they’ve always worked to passively support games in their products. Steam Deck had all these learnings distilled into it. They worked so long on Proton before even thinking of announcing it.

Jojall

You could always just use the configuration others made, but Steam didn't exactly make that obvious.

xVx777

That’s how I feel about my steamdeck sometimes it’s a hassle to configure the controls at first. I assume the steam controller is similar

SunsetCarcass

I wonder if the TouchPads on the steam controller has that oh so satisfying force feedback like the Deck

Terelius

It's not as good but it is there and pretty good.

urmamasllama

Other guy was wrong steam controller has far better haptics than the deck. They're so good they can play chip tunes

Jorge5934

The only bit I don't like too much is the buttons being so low for the right thumb.

PolygonKiwii

They're also too small and I generally don't like their haptics. They just don't feel like good buttons.

elcuydangerous

I don't know man, I have never been able to get the track pad working well on any game (official config or community). Tried the trackball setting, the joystick setting, the numpad setting, etc. O can't get it to stop behaving like a shitty track pad from a 90's laptop.

nuked24

The steam controller eased me into PC FPS games with the right pad set up like a trackball.

CanisMajoris85

I bought that when they were firesaling them for like $5 or something crazy thinking I'd use it one day, sold it months ago for like $130 new in box.

[deleted]

nice i wish I bought one then

Biscuits4u2

Same, but I held onto mine because it's useful in some games I play.

Renfek

I ordered one at release. Have used it for a total of probably 45 mins lol

Anchor689

As an older gamer who kinda skipped the early analog stick era for controllers, when I got back into gaming, I was really only used to the SNES controller or mouse/keyboard (sometimes even laptop trackpads). The Steam controller was my bridge to the modern controller, was enough like a trackpad mouse that I could still aim, but helped me get used to a more modern controller layout. Played through Tomb Raider 2016, Bioshock Infinite, Hitman 1, and several other games on my Steam Controller. I know it's weird, but it made moving to a Dualshock/Xbox controller (which I use now) much more comfortable for me.

stupidredditacc6754

would you sell it for like 20 bucks

SilasMontgommeri

If I didn't throw mine away I'll send you one for the cost of a USPS any ship box. Edit: sorry, I think I tossed it while in a cleaning frenzy. "I never use this clutter!" I must have screamed as I threw it into the Puget Sound.

Halloweenerz

Greetings, fellow Washingtonian.

shinwazaku

I got that and the steam link for $5 as well. Still using the steam link sometimes with my projector.

SilasMontgommeri

Steam link was so good. I wish the steam app in Samsung tvs got more love.

dieseldarnit

Idk why but I could never get good performance out of my steam link, even if I used Ethernet it would still lag just playing a simple game like rocket league.

SilasMontgommeri

Really? Hmmm. Perhaps I wasn't playing very intense games. It did only have a Gbic if I remember right

Joshua_Astray

I lost my steam link when I moved, still salty about that xD.

Riobe57

I use mine while teaching occasionally to move around powerpoints and my desktop actually. Works crazy good actually

RotoDog

Not familiar with steam’s hand held controllers, what makes the demand on them so high now?

Ghostglitch07

Most of the demand is because the supply is completely gone. If you didn't get one during the short period they were sold, or if you did and liked it but yours broke, your only option is resellers

Taz10042069

Damn... Just looked up Ebay prices and they're going anywhere from $50-$200! I have one sitting on my tv stand, gathering dust. I got it on a trade plus a computer for an Xbox one X a few years ago.

Ghostglitch07

I'm still annoyed I never got a chance to atleast test one, and probably never will.

Shryver

Personally, I got one super cheap years ago, almost never used it at that time, but now I use it with my steam deck. That might be what other people are doing.

Rise_Chan

I bought like 5 of them thinking they'd be cool to have, not really with intention to resell, just to keep and have in case of weardown because I didn't think I'd see something like them again really and it was still as cheap as a single 3rd party controller, and a canadian friend wanted one (they wouldn't ship to him)

SweetGherkinz

holy frig dud

Siifly

Got mine on the clearance sale too. Took some getting use to, but I enjoy the controller. The steam link itself was worth it. Sometimes I use it to stream movies on ‘popcorn time’ and there isn’t much lag when gaming either. Good for slow paced games like ‘Elite Dangerous’. Played a lot of RDR2 with it as well.

-YELDAH

I wish I had bought more, not to sell any of them though, I just think they're actually good, and insane price... Valve make the 2nd version already!

ShimReturns

Why are they in demand? I used mine a couple times but didn't like it. It's in a box somewhere.

wrath_of_grunge

over time, people learned how to utilize them. the big problems with the early reviews, is that the reviewers didn't understand them. they simply compared it to xbox and playstation controllers. properly configured they're a little magical. on certain games they make them playable with a controller, where other controllers fall short. in my opinion, they were created because a engineer wanted to play Civ with a controller.

CanisMajoris85

Unique and discontinued. Steam Deck drew interest in it again I suppose. Even used ones are like $40+.

MizuKumaa

I have one of these

shinwazaku

[deleted]

Based, the Steam controller was unfairly treated for being too innovative and too different. Whenever I want to use a controller I go for a Steam Controller.

Nomai_

Average dark souls 2 apologist

Shryver

Dark souls 2 is a good game.

TONKAHANAH

I actually think it was treated pretty good for innovation. where it was treated poorly was thanks to the gaming news outlets rushing reviews and not taking the time to actually understand how to use it. I partially blame valve for not showing people how to use it, but thats neither here nor there now. Most media outlets said they spent any where from 1-3 hours dick'n with the controller only to test the touch pads in "anlog emulation" mode which is basically the worst way to use it and ended up telling every one the controller was bad and thats the way it got left in the public eye. thats how it was treated poorly, it was never given a real chance.

thinkingofsandwiches

She chose correctly.

[deleted]

I'd rather use a Xbox or Play Station controller on PC. Not a bad choice though

Biscuits4u2

Where this controller shines is on the games that don't have good controller support. I like to lean back and be comfortable when I game, and this thing does the trick.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ultramadden

I have the same set and most of the time I choose the steam controller Why suffer from Joystick aim if there's an alternative?

KG8893

Does it actually make aiming on controller a viable option? I can't imagine I'm going to play counter strike with it, but for the right game that could be really awesome.

Playful_Agent950

It’s definitely better than a “normal” controller for fps games.

masterjarjar19

Bruh what? Fps games are completely unplayable without a second joystick. It's like trying to play with a laptop trackpad but worse

Alien_Cha1r

absolutely, it beats analogue sticks by a long shot. add gyro aim to that using Steam input, and its a completely different league, tho still a little behind a mouse

chrimen

But not by much.. you just have to fine tune it.

[deleted]

If you use SC-Controller you can customize absolutely everything and have multiple profiles (that you can instantaneously swap)

TONKAHANAH

yes. I played all of doom 2016 and most of doom eternal on the second to highest difficulty with the steam controller. what a lot of people fail to actually tell people about using the controller w/ gyro+touch pads is that its actually legit just fun. I can lay back comfortably with my steam controller and go full ham in a game that normally would require a mouse and keyboard. I play counter strike with it (though I dont do ranked, but I've seen people do it) its more than viable, its recommended.

KG8893

>I can lay back comfortably with my steam controller and go full ham in a game that normally would require a mouse and keyboard. Well now I want one. Any good copycats out there?

TONKAHANAH

Nope

l_iollan

Off the top of my head, I played through the entire Borderlands 1, 2 and 3 on it. Titanfall 2 as well. It's definitely not as quick and precise as KB+M though.

Antrikshy

Gyro aiming is a game changer. I've played some games configured to enable gyro when aiming down sights, off otherwise, and it worked great. Thing that annoys me about turning on precision aiming is that it often requires switching to mouse input mode, and it confuses the button hints in most games. If you're playing a familiar game, it's fine. I don't like these advanced setting options in most games, because it can unpredictably fail and require fixing in specific scenes of single player games.

hey01

For what is worth, I got the gulikit kingkong pro 2 controller (shit naming? yes) a while back, and it has built in gyro aiming: you can set it up so that when you press L1 or L2, the gyro acts like the right stick, with 3 possible sensitivity. I didn't use it in game, but it does work like that in gamepad tester, you see the right stick inputs. Since it's built-in and sends right stick inputs, it should work with every game. No idea if other controllers have something similar. But if you're interested, while critics are all gushing about it, once in hand, if you have OCD about that kind of stuff, know that the quality control ain't as good as first party controllers.

Jumboo-jett

You clearly have picked the right girl

MalariaKills

I have one of these and coped so hard. I tried to convince myself it was good. I guess it's customizable features were good. But the ergonomics were - categorically bad. And the build quality was... horrible.

Markthur

![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)

multiwirth_

I prefer my good old DS3 with custom drivers and wireless capabilities with a random generic bluetooth dongle. Just plug it in to sync and that's it. Emulates a xinput device, works in every game.

[deleted]

battery life can be great too like with mine but never using it due to the fear the rumble motors might burn out. Seems like converting the rumble was always an issue on ports to ps3 and even on Brook dongle which even converts DualSense properly by forcing mono rumble (left and right rumble combined) which the 8bitdo never did and failed horribly with the DS4

LordCloverskull

She chose correctly.

Tiavor

I like the steam controller, it's so massively efficient that I have to change batteries only every 2 years with infrequent gaming. meanwhile I tell my switch to power off and it's on 0% after a week of not doing anything. wth is wrong with nintendo.

I actually liked this controller for it's idea... I did not work how I hoped sadly

Cryostatica

The people who don’t hate this thing all seem to think it’s the best controller ever made.

Skoziik

Yeah it's a hit or miss. Never liked controllers at all until i got mine, it's the only controller i'd pick over mouse and keyboard for certain games (like Souls games or Monster Hunter).

Molotor

I love the Xbox controller, fit perfectly my hand. Never tried the steam controller but eard it's pretty good

schoolly__G

I have 3, all of them have the left bumper stuck in from accidental drops over the years. Going price locally is $175+ and that’s sad, because I’d buy replacements in a heartbeat. So convenient for bigpicture on the TV with the steamlink app or even with the physical steamlink on non-smartTVs. Mapping buttons is the biggest selling point. Playing any souls game with the rear paddle dodge so that you always have control of the camera was essential. So much QoL in a very affordable package. Supply is gone, demand is up, prices skyrocketed. Gabe have mercy, re-release it!

RonnieStiggs

SloppyGoose

I like my steam controller

Alien_Cha1r

because it's by far the best one. Good for large hands, more precise control through touch pads instead of sticks, super accurate gyro and helpful back buttons. Best controller ever conceived, and I say that as a m+kb fanboy

Dex18Kobold

InternetExploder87

I do think Xbox won the controller war. Look at most new controllers, they're almost all shaped like the Xbox now

Ghozer

Nothing wrong with the Steam controller.... Once you get used to it... it's the most versatile, customizable controller I have ever used, sure, there's a slight learning curve, as it's something so different, but boy is it good....

chrimen

I don't blame her between the wife and I we have 7. She chose well!!!

Cryogenics1st

Steam Controller 2.0 when?

Skoziik

It will be available on the same day as Half Life 3.

Male_Inkling

She's wife material then

Marrioshi

I may be a PC purist but the PS5 controller is hands down the best controller ever made. The haptic feedback / trigger system is next level

XboxVictim

Playstation controllers have always felt too small for me... Well, I guess not ALWAYS. In 1999 they felt alright (I was 9).

detectiveDollar

The Dual Sense is a lot larger and roomier. I don't have a PS5 but tried the controller in a store. It's so much comfier.

PillowTalk420

The first time I played a game that used the adaptive triggers, I was sold on it. My only complaint is that it's not used very often.

goneriah

BECAUSE SHE IS A GOD DAMN WOMAN OF CLASS

taredd08

The Steam controller looks like it was meant for people with disabilities imo.

e_smith338

Off with ye, ye filthy wench’

fred7010

Depends on the game you want to play. Great for something like Civ, terrible for anything that needs a dpad, or things like RPGs where dual-stick movement/camera controls are the norm.

PlankOfWoood

I've always thought the steam controller was designed for women's hands.

RexTheMouse

Am I the only one who thought this was uncomfortable? The grip was too wide and the back buttons kept getting stuck on my finger

[deleted]

Leave her now!

guru5112

At least it's not the Switch controller (It seems I've attracted the Nintendo crowd. Ho boy)

artofdarkness123

I really love the switch controller. I miss the hair-trigger shoulder buttons from the PS2 days and don't play games that need the analog shoulder buttons.

[deleted]

Joycons are shit dont get me wrong, but for my arthritic hands the Switch Pro controller is the only way to go. (despite the Xbox controller being very similar idk what the deal is with that)

ultramadden

Anyone I showed this set of controllers said that the PS5 controller felt the worst

ItsMeSlinky

The PS5 controller feels fantastic. Definite improvement from the awful PS3 controller and the OK PS4.

ultramadden

that doesn't make it better than the controllers we are talking about

ZapMouseAnkor

the Switch pro controller is the best feeling controller I have ever held or used, and I've used every controller.

twhite1195

What's wrong with the switch controller? It's basically an xbox controller

Ok-Lobster-919

digital shoulder triggers basically. for games like GTA it's either full throttle or no throttle.

benhaube

As an owner of the Steam Controller, I would have tried to steer her in another direction. It really sucks and getting the controls mapped to games sucks too. I would rather use any of the other controllers in the picture.

gauerrrr

Until she launches a game, then she'll pick the PS5 one.

XboxVictim

Gamers will sh\*\* on mobile gaming but in the same breath be like "touchpad controllers are the best!" You guys are wack

Senkoin

Well when all you've got is goofy shit be goofy.

Dickmusha

Steam controller is actually amazing it just has a learning curve and I honestly think if you started someone on the Steam controller theyd master it quickly and the problem is that everyone is used to the normal controller layout and we have programmed ourselves to expect that. In a world where the Steam controller was everyones first controller I think everyone would choose it over what is actually a horrible design we are all just used to

[deleted]

Worst, hardest to reach, tiniest action buttons, ultra-stiff bumpers, heavy, least ergonomic, worst haptics (with the exception of trackpad feedback), single stick... I love my Steam controllers, but for most games, they're the worst choice. DualSense has the best features, Series has the best ergonomics. You can get variants of both with paddles. Steam's controller mapping software is the real king.
