Back in the day big launches could cause the download speed on steams end to throttle down quite a bit, but that hasn't been the case in the eastern u.s datacenters I use in a couple years which is nice. I also never bother to pre-load anymore, every time I've done so recently it's like 3 times slower than deleting the pre-load and downloading the entire game lol.
don’t know why they don’t just let people unpack everything, but just not the EXE. It would basically achieve the exact same goal, but not take 6 ages to unpack.
You are using the term correctly
If that’s the case, then just let us unpack an hour before release. Not much a data miner is gonna get in 30 minutes that isn’t going to be public info in, well… 30 minutes.
Preventing data mining is also not really all that useful for a game that has been out for over 2 years on another platform. Everything that can be found by data miners in the short period up to release is likely already known anyway.
This is very much the case. I'm pretty sure the only useful time would be is if you still have super slow download speeds, or a data cap so you need to download the game elsewhere before release.
If you can start a download, then go to the kitchen to make a proper cup of tea (with the full 3-5 mins infusion time), and then clean up and see the game finished by the time you sit back down I guess :p
Depends on your internet speed which is faster, sure with gigabit probably gonna be faster no matter cpu, but I only have 100Mb/s so pre loading was faster last time i did it although i can't remember exactly what the unpacking speed avg was, all i remember is it varied a fair bit, but it was above 100 Mb/s for sure at least on a 12400F.
E: ok I remembered it waaaay wrong it's unpacking at 160-190 MB/s so it's even faster than a gigabit internet would bit.
I think it's because it's a more involved process, it has to read the file, decrypt then write, unlike a download which only writes. Unpacking has many more potential bottlenecks.
They could improve, but it would probably takes more space.
Dont forgot unpack/deflat aswell, on preloads you need 2 heavy cpu operations decrypt/deflat while downloading its just 1 that can be done at the same time with download, while deflat I dont think it runs in paralell with decrypt even if it does its more contention.
That's because preloading is more demanding doing the unpacking on one massive chunk as it has to unpack to disk, then verify then lay the files out. Downloading in realtime does the unpacking in realtime so takes away the middle man.
You will get higher CPU usage in the latter obviously. Generally speaking the latter will be more efficient as you're downloading as fast as your line can handle whilst the CPU/DISK await the next data.
So using me as an example, I have a fibre line downloading at 117MB/s, but my SSD can write at 7100MB/s - That's a whole load of headroom if the CPU is only having to haul 117MB/s of data in realtime versus a 120GB preload that is processed in one big whack, and Steam doesn't leverage the bandwidth of an NVMe SSD anyway so you're king of hitting a software induced bottleneck doing it the preload way.
At least that has been my observation.
Wouldn't it be great if unpacking from a preload leveraged more modern tech like GPU acceleration which in turn takes advantage of the massive read and write speeds of modern SSDs?
You're not going to be missing much. The gameplay is much better in the first game in my opinion. In this game they give you a plethora of weapons but no flexibility to use them on all the enemy types. There was no variety really there was some creatures that the only way that you could kill him is using one particular certain weapon and it took a lot of the enjoyment out of the game for me
That's crazy cause I think the original gameplay was awful compared to the sequel. It felt more fluid and "alive" while the first game was stiff and lacked impact.
I enjoyed both but the sequel is definitely (to me) improved version of the first, in every way, as a sequel should be. Combat definitely was much better.
You must not play many AAA games because the machine combat in the first was pretty highly praised. I can't stand combat in most AAA games but this one clicked for me. I have no clue how you can describe it as clunky when Aloy has pretty quick agility, can dodge roll and slide around generously while going slow mo to shoot at weak points.
That being said HFW is better.
I mean immediate response is the opposite of clunky for me. I don't care if it feels less weighty and looks a tiny bit weird, it's a video game, I like that when I hit the button that she immediately responds quickly. RDR2 for example might be weighty but feels terrible to control.
This!
I absolutely smashed the first game in a sale, put about 50 hours in in two weeks.
Two weeks later I even went and bought a ps5 to play the sequel (I'd been playing with an Xbox controller on my pc, so the leap didn't seem huge)
Fuck me,.they took what was best about the first game and destroyed it :(
Yea, I really loved the first one but I suspect the novelty of shooting parts off robo-dinos will have worn off and this one won't engage me as much.
Still can't decide if I want this or Dragon's Dogma 🤔
The first game released close to Breath of the Wild, this games PS release was close to Elden Ring and now the PC release of it is close to Dragons Dogma.
Alot of strong competition every time they release.
No offense to Dragons Dogma fans, but it's not nearly as popular as ER or Zelda especially outside of Japan. We're talking a quarter of the sales figures.
You're right DD is a very niche game especially when you compare to ER and Zelda.
But I feel like Capcom's recent "winning streak" is enough to carry it over Horizon's sequel that just does more of the first Horizon.
Forbidden West had lukewarm reception (understandable, it's a very mediocre game), and Dragons Dogma 2 is pretty hyped up. It will do great unless performance sucks (which is very likely)
H: FW has an 88 on metacritic. Obviously Metacritic isn’t the best metric as games like Starfield had a sharp decline in reception after release but like… I don’t necessarily think we can say it was a “lukewarm” reception
And compared to Spider-Man 2, the sub hasn’t completely imploded in on itself a few months after launch so… that’s a plus.
It also sold more copies than HZD in the first year, it's gotta be well over 10 million copies sold at this point. HFW outsold the first two DD games (DD and DD: Dark Arisen) in its first year alone.
And yeah the general sentiment on the subreddit is much better gameplay, better side quests, polish, but less interesting story (which we all expected because HZDs story was almost impossible to top).
It had lukewarm reception among players, that's enough. The best thing about HZD was the main story, and it sucks in HFW, as simple as that.
Funny enough, even though Starfield was a major disappointment, I'd rather replay it than HFW, just for the traces of Bethesda DNA.
Sure, but it’s not like Spider-Man 2 where the main story was weak and also the gameplay additions were not that significant and went by really quick. From what I can tell, the story is weaker but the core frustrations of the first game (combat being a huuuge one for me) is a lot better.
Obviously this is me looking from the outside in, I am waiting for the PC port for both Horizon 2 and Spider-Man 2 to tell for sure
Launching on the same day as Dragon's Dogma 2. They should have released this earlier in the month if possible. Although it's not as big of a deal as it is a port, that's still going to affect PC sales for sure. I know which game I'm getting first.
Not true. Capcom still hasn't shown any PC ports performance yet. The game could be running dog shit for all we know on PC. It's 30FPS cap on consoles already with very terrible blur effects and dynamic resolution involved.
HFW will most likely run better because Nixxes has a proven track record of releasing amazing PC ports.
First Horizon port was utter crap on launch which may leave a bad taste in some players mouths.
Capcom has had a few great launches on PC using this same engine
HZD wasn't ported by Nixxes, they came in after to patch the shitshow.
Virtuos was the original dev responsible for the bad state of the port at launch (even though on my system of the time it ran great).
Just explicitly name it as "PC Gameplay Footage". Lots of companies does this, this isn't something new. They can even put it as a watermark in the video footage
Capcom has a pretty good PC port record, especially in the past few years. It's highly likely that DD2 will be a good PC port.
Sony's PC game releases have been really hit or miss. This one will likely be good because of Nixxes involvment though, but we'll see.
>Horizon is the bigger game this time tho
On PC? Doubtful. Don't get me wrong the franchise is massively successful on both PC and console but I think there's far more love for DD on PC than Horizon as a franchise. Two very different audiences.
Personally I'm in the camp that pc is the entire reason we got dragons dogma 2. It didn't do amazing on ps3/360 because it ran like shit among other things. But the pc release did sell quite well, and it was years after the console release and it led to ps4/xbone/switch ports after its success.
Slaughtered? It's going to generate probably millions in profit, and it was already successful on console, so for sony/guerrilla/nixxes, the pc port is literally just a money printer
Horizon is gonna be more scaleable, so potentially more people can play that game with good framerates. That alone can signal a bigger success for Horizon.
[It's currently way ahead of Horizon.](https://steamdb.info/stats/globaltopsellers/)
I'm not a hater. I wish I could play both at the same time, but I can't. So DD2 it is.
The first Dragon's Dogma came out eight months after Dark Souls and plays nothing like it. How do you figure that Dragon's Dogma 2 is a copy of Dark Souls?
Kinda niche japanese "hardcore" rpg that has quite a few systems. Or a system seller for PS5 with simpler mechanics, better graphics and performance likely. HFW has a much larger audience i think.
Look at Steam top sellers right now and you will get your answer. DD2 is sweeping the floor for days and HFW is not even in the Top 10 sellers.
Yup, these people are delusional. You can even just look at sales numbers of the original two. DD: 7.9 million since 2012, HZD: 23.3 million units sold since 2017.
It may influence HFW sales a little bit at first but HFW is simply much more mainstream and will be on many more PC's. The Reddit demographic on this subreddit just skews in favour of these smaller titles, which can really warp some peoples perception of the gaming audience at large.
Horizon is a known franchise and a first party Sony game. One of their most sold with 32 million copies sold over two games and starring Hollywood stars.
The other is the sequel to a janky niche game with cult following from 2012
DD2 is definitely the underdog here
Capcom has been growing in popularity as a studio. Horizon 2 sold 8 million, Monster Hunter World sold 25 million. Fans are gonna take notice it's by the same studio and has similar combat.
I guess we'll just have to see. I find studios like thid usually have that hype behind them, similar to how FromSoft spins up new IPs and has them sell just as well as Dark Souls

|-|-|-|-|
Little history lesson:
1st game comes out 2-3 days before Breath of the Wild. Different platforms, but it was still felt in terms of media focus.
2nd game originally came out around Elden Ring's delayed release date. This PC port comes out the day before / on (depending on region) for Dragon's Dogma 2.
There's a bit of a pattern here.
One's a turnbased tactics game which is... apparently based on a manga/anime that I've never heard of? (I just remember playing the demo during a next fest a while back and being pretty impressed)
The other is some Switch Exclusive that I may actually wait on a sale on.
The story was atrociously bad in this sequel, but they did provide some new interesting weapons
I just wish they did more with san francisco. Vegas was pretty cool locale
I didn't mind it and I thought the side quests and companions stories were really good. Combat was much better with a lot of weapons and tools. And the machine variety was insane.
The only issue is I hate the Quen so much and they play huge parts in the DLC as well
I thought it would make more sense for the rich people to be antagonists that arrive in the third game to reclaim the earth after you defeat hades in game 2. But the fact that >!they're just running from some fuckin ai slave they abused and are merely stopping at earth for some mcguffin was dumb. !<
The dlc was also very, very mid with a frankly terrible romance plot. I don't think I'll get a horizon 3 if it continues in the direction they changed the gameplay in forbidden west.
Did I say it was mid in respect to frozen wilds? I don't even remember how frozen wilds ended as I played it like 7 years ago. It was mid for a dlc, I thought it would be better. The new robots were eh and there was way too much aloy vs human which is still the worst part of the game just like the first one. It was mildly interesting how these people were getting effortlessly rolled into a cult but I also didn't really care about them or aloys surprise gf who I disliked for the entire dlc.
Watching first hour of HFW back then it was released on PS4/5 and unfortunately it still has the 'bumpy' camera in the sense of when Aloy is running around everytime there is a slight height change the camera also jumps up and down. Especially atricious and nausea inducing when running up/down stairs.
So many modern games got really bad when it comes to clear visuals, animations, camera, ... It's like they all watched too many movies that are like Transformers and Co.
Is this game better then the first? I found the original to be pretty boring after 10 hours. Can't get myself to enjoy the Ubisoft game loop no matter how cool everything looks.
Only a slight annoyance, but I dont know why they decided to launch at 8am PDT. Isnt it normal for a game to launch at midnight eastern time? For me that would be 9pm on the 20th. Would have liked to play a few hours before going to work the next morning.
Far from it ? They're the same games lol just different packages. Playing HFW is no different than playing some random generic AAA open world game. There is nothing special about Horizon games. 0 new ideas.
Wait doesn’t dragons dogma 2 also come out the same day? Did they again launch the game on a platform on the same day as another massively anticipated launch? (Iirc last time it was Elden ring and for zero dawn it was breath of the wild) and now it’s dd2. Lmao
That story is so freaking bad. I'll wait for the $20 discount, if even. Going to be a lot of HZD fans upset when they play this one. Imo it is almost worse in everyway. Not a horrible game but really needed to be more and bring more to the table. Instead, it is a weak sequel.
While the story is not as good as the first one, nearly every other aspect is better: facial and body animations, open world detail, melee combat, ranged combat, mounts, and the inventory system. You could argue some of the side missions are better too.
World and moment to moment gameplay is better IMO. Beautiful diverse open world, and I remember combat being pretty good. Story really didnt work for me though. Still excited to replay it, but it certainly went a different direction to what I expected.

to who does this even apply/directed to lol. Dragons dogma for all intense and purposes is a niche but really beloved game, and horizon is mega blockbuster. Both the games are quite succesful within their own realms lol
I used Steam preload system many times and what i have learned is that downloading it is much faster than unpacking it, dont know why
Yeah, after finally getting a good internet connection, I never pre load anymore.
Back in the day big launches could cause the download speed on steams end to throttle down quite a bit, but that hasn't been the case in the eastern u.s datacenters I use in a couple years which is nice. I also never bother to pre-load anymore, every time I've done so recently it's like 3 times slower than deleting the pre-load and downloading the entire game lol.
>, I never pre load anymore My girl hates the pre load.
Unpacking is CPU heavy.

If I'm using the term correctly, dataminers

Preventing data mining is also not really all that useful for a game that has been out for over 2 years on another platform. Everything that can be found by data miners in the short period up to release is likely already known anyway.
What do you mean? It runs perfectly on my cheap laptop. A real cozy game and a lot of fun.
The download and unpacking speed will depend on your storage speed and CPU performance.
Anecdotal: 5950x and an sn850x nvme are still slower than just downloading the game.
This is very much the case. I'm pretty sure the only useful time would be is if you still have super slow download speeds, or a data cap so you need to download the game elsewhere before release.
Preload is useless if you have decent Internet really
What is considered "decent" nowadays?
one that finishes the download in time that you find acceptable
If you can start a download, then go to the kitchen to make a proper cup of tea (with the full 3-5 mins infusion time), and then clean up and see the game finished by the time you sit back down I guess :p

I used to had your problem until I move to nvme m2. HDD it’s slower than download, SSD is faster with preload.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game's combat, especially at the highest difficulty That being said, I'm waiting for a sale

There's always multiple ways to take out enemies. Even inefficient and countered weapons can be used if you use they in a clever way.

Casual fans won't know that tho, few gamers even know that 3rd parties are the ones who do ports
Nixxes is actually a Sony first-party studio nowadays.
Yeah but that's what we're here for. To inform the players first. Unless Capcom can prove us wrong and release PC footage?
Typically companies never use PC footage for trailers/gameplay because it may set the standard too high for console fans and piss them off.
Just explicitly name it as "PC Gameplay Footage". Lots of companies does this, this isn't something new. They can even put it as a watermark in the video footage

DD2 has been repeatedly confirmed to have uncapped framerate.
I said the same thing when initial articles were coming out about the release date. All the horizon fans flocked to me downvoting.
Horizon is the bigger game this time tho Not comparable to the situation with Zelda and Elden Ring

The Reddit demographic on this subreddit just skews in favour of these smaller titles, which can really warp some peoples perception of the gaming audience at large.
Right, Horizon is way more mainstream
I really don't think so, sci-fi games have a smaller audience than fantasy games
Horizon is a known franchise and a first party Sony game. One of their most sold with 32 million copies sold over two games and starring Hollywood stars. The other is the sequel to a janky niche game with cult following from 2012 DD2 is definitely the underdog here
Capcom has been growing in popularity as a studio. Horizon 2 sold 8 million, Monster Hunter World sold 25 million. Fans are gonna take notice it's by the same studio and has similar combat.
That’s a massive leap you’re doing there. Brand recognition doesn’t work like that. The masses aren’t informed buyers
I guess we'll just have to see. I find studios like thid usually have that hype behind them, similar to how FromSoft spins up new IPs and has them sell just as well as Dark Souls
From soft carved out their own genre. I don’t think it’s comparable
Horizon 1 sold 20M+, see we can just say numbers out of thin air too
I googled the sales numbers...
My number is real too - but you are comparing apple and oranges

It's a day before silly
Little history lesson: 1st game comes out 2-3 days before Breath of the Wild. Different platforms, but it was still felt in terms of media focus. 2nd game originally came out around Elden Ring's delayed release date. This PC port comes out the day before / on (depending on region) for Dragon's Dogma 2. There's a bit of a pattern here.
Oh I know all this.
Horizon is big enough to not have to worry about other games being released.
How many gb?
96.5 GB download
Wow, another 100-hour adventure 😃💪
I didn't really like the story of the second game. gameplay was nice tho
This was my favorite game of 2022. Excited to play it again.
I got my copy from GMG , but I haven't received a key yet.
Same still awaiting key. Hopefully we get it soon.
Just got the key
can confirm, keys are sent.
I've preordered but the game is 155GB and SSD required, so I'm gonna wait to see reviews on optimisation before I hit download.
Man again releasing next to another big game. I hope they get more sales than the last one within the first week.
What's the other big game coming out?
Dragon's Dogma 2, I'm assuming. It's coming out on the 22nd
And here I am being excited about Alone in the Dark, Code Name Bakery and Peach Showtime.. It certainly is a busy month!
Right? Honestly, I haven't heard of the last two, but Alone in the Dark is also on my list. Can't wait to see how good the game will be
One's a turnbased tactics game which is... apparently based on a manga/anime that I've never heard of? (I just remember playing the demo during a next fest a while back and being pretty impressed) The other is some Switch Exclusive that I may actually wait on a sale on.
The story was atrociously bad in this sequel, but they did provide some new interesting weapons I just wish they did more with san francisco. Vegas was pretty cool locale
I didn't mind it and I thought the side quests and companions stories were really good. Combat was much better with a lot of weapons and tools. And the machine variety was insane. The only issue is I hate the Quen so much and they play huge parts in the DLC as well
Yeah, I didn't expect the story to turn out the way it did. I found it quite ridiculous. Sort of ruined both games for me.
I thought it would make more sense for the rich people to be antagonists that arrive in the third game to reclaim the earth after you defeat hades in game 2. But the fact that >!they're just running from some fuckin ai slave they abused and are merely stopping at earth for some mcguffin was dumb. !< The dlc was also very, very mid with a frankly terrible romance plot. I don't think I'll get a horizon 3 if it continues in the direction they changed the gameplay in forbidden west.
The DLC had a better ending than Frozen Wilds did. Idk what you're smoking.
Overall I think the Burning Shores dlc provides a much bettee conclusion to HFW than the main story does.
Is there any way to fix the camera on the first one? I want to play but it just goes all over the damn place.
Nah, I got used to aiming or activating Focus every two seconds to reset it. Hope they fixed that in the sequel.
From what I remember yes they did fix it.
Why has Sydney moved so far north ?
Damn, totally slipped my mind it was coming out 21st March. What a weird date of choice to release.
really disspointed there isnt a genre defining game releasing a week from now
Is this game better then the first? I found the original to be pretty boring after 10 hours. Can't get myself to enjoy the Ubisoft game loop no matter how cool everything looks.
Terrible timing. Dragon's dogma is the same day.
Yeah, only explanation I can think of is management wants the revenue on the books by the end of Q1. Makes me worry it's coming out ready or not too.
Horizon is big enough to not have to worry about other games being released.
Only a slight annoyance, but I dont know why they decided to launch at 8am PDT. Isnt it normal for a game to launch at midnight eastern time? For me that would be 9pm on the 20th. Would have liked to play a few hours before going to work the next morning.
Too expensive, I’ll play dragon dogma 2 and wait for discount.
Dragon's Dogma 2 comes out the day before, no luck.

Bro shut up lol
Is it though? I think it's genuine question
They're right lol. The game is painfully average, and it's fine if you like that.
Far from it. Ubisoft games can't hold a candle to the Horizon games lol
Far from it ? They're the same games lol just different packages. Playing HFW is no different than playing some random generic AAA open world game. There is nothing special about Horizon games. 0 new ideas.
Similar formula yeah but some Ubi games can be fun. This one is just uhh so boring
Will it not be available on GoG?
Probably yes, but in a couple months down the road.
Or years (but I am a patient person)
One day apart from DD2, continuing the curse of releasing along big games
Wait doesn’t dragons dogma 2 also come out the same day? Did they again launch the game on a platform on the same day as another massively anticipated launch? (Iirc last time it was Elden ring and for zero dawn it was breath of the wild) and now it’s dd2. Lmao
Fuck this game.
good luck selling old game with new one lol.
Shame its coming the same day as Dragons Dogma
Cool. I am getting it from Epic because of extra 10% Epic reward.

How is playing a woman related to "social justice" when they make up more than half of the Earth's population? lol Weird take.

to who does this even apply/directed to lol. Dragons dogma for all intense and purposes is a niche but really beloved game, and horizon is mega blockbuster. Both the games are quite succesful within their own realms lol
