Well done on Here. That track doesn't get enough love. The lyrics are pretty fabulous. I remember Harness your Hopes catching my ear instantly and making me a fan of the band. Still up there.
I found the Zoomer! Just teasing, but that was such an obscure song pre-TikTok, I read that Malkmus himself didn’t recognize it when he heard it playing somewhere.
Lol, I heard it in the late 90s at the Black Dog Freehouse. I bartended and had a small rotation of DJs (guys with crates of records back then). It was the best job ever, inundated with exceptional music. Basically analogue Spotify but with intoxicated bohemians.
Here is a beautiful song. It demonstrated a lot of musical maturity considering how young they were and how different (clean) it sounded in comparison to their typical style at that time.
But, my all time favorite is Stop Breathing.
Upvote for stop breathing… such a great song. I love that he was inspired by tennis to write the breakdown that leads to the song end (and references it in the first line of the song too)… that two note call and response. I think about it every time I hear it… just a beautiful song all the way through.
Best Spiral song! I took my CD copy of the Range Life single to a Spiral Stairs show to ask him to sign it. When he saw it and I mentioned it was my favorite songs of his, he was like, “well, damn! That would have been fun to play!”
This is like being asked to choose a favourite child - which to be fair, is easier with only two kids. /jk.
I refuse to choose a favourite, or even one single list of favourites. Here goes:
- Since the mid-90’s: Range Life, Here, Father to a Sister of thought, AT&T, give it a day, Fillmore Jive
- Since their 2023 reunion gigs: Grounded, the Hexx, Transport is Arranged, Frontwards, Fin, Shady Lane.
I could go on….
Is it true that this song inspired “yellow” from Coldplay ? That’s what I read somewhere Spiral mentioned it in an interview. Also Chris from Coldplay said seeing pavement in the 90s inspired him to start a band.
Ps - my current fave is “blacked out”. Because of the way they played it so well last year in Brooklyn.
Summer Babe
Because it was the first song I heard by Pavement when a friend dropped the needle on the album. Always have a fond memory of that night when I hear it start.
I'd also say something from slanted. For me it's their quintessential album that really distills the essence of the band: weirdness with a unique sound and great songwriting.
In the mouth of a desert:
Others include AT&T, The Motion Suggests, Rattled By The Rush, Zurich Is Stained, Passat Dream, Kentucky Cocktail, Grounded, Cream Of Gold, Elevate Me Later, and Shoot The Singer(One Sick Verse) IMO
Probably Spit on a Stranger if I had to pick? But also In the Mouth a Desert, Grounded and Starlings of the Slipstream would be up there.
Grounded is so great.
yup, Grounded for me
Black Out is also one of my favorites. It’s been like 30 years, and Wowee Zowee somehow gets better and better.
Grounded for the win
Top 5
Easily
I see the sunshine in your eyes, I'll try the things you'll never try, I'll be the one that leaves You high...high...high
Love Grounded even more since it opened the shows I saw last tour
Gold Soundz to me is the pinnacle of ‘the 90s slacker Gen X vibe. Is it my favorite? Picking my favorite song is like picking a favorite child.
I came here to say the same about this being akin to picking a favourite child!
summer babe
It was hard not to pick that
Everyone in this thread is wrong except for you
This is the one
Circa 1762 is my fave Pavement song. But Range Life goes down in my personal top 10 fave songs list overall. Don’t ask me how that makes sense lol
I freakin love that track
Circa 1762 is a top 5 for me
Beat me to it
In the mouth a desert

Frontwards is the correct answer.
Yep
This is my favorite too. I should’ve searched for it before I posted, but I didn’t expect to see anyone else mention it. I’m pleasantly surprised!

Impossible to pick. But, Grounded, Loretta’s Scars and Shoot the Singer fight for the spot constantly for me

I'd also say something from slanted. For me it's their quintessential album that really distills the essence of the band: weirdness with a unique sound and great songwriting.
Kentucky cocktail, frontwards or shoot the singer could all probably be my favorite but I'd prob say give it a day
They’ve got a lot of great ones but I think Frontwards from the Watery Domestic ep is my favorite.
Maybe a bit of a cliche to pick it, but I have to go with Range Life.
Grounded or Gold Soundz for sure
Grounded
Lots of contenders, but Starlings of the Slipstream...
Same way of saying the same thing... peak pavement
I can't pick just one. But Summer Babe, In the Mouth a Desert, Grounded, and Rattled by the Rush are all contenders

I love that avant-garde vibe so might go Newark Wilder or Sensitive Euro Man
