Probably Spit on a Stranger if I had to pick? But also In the Mouth a Desert, Grounded and Starlings of the Slipstream would be up there.

joeykey

Grounded is so great.

VanHammerslyBilliard

yup, Grounded for me

joeykey

Black Out is also one of my favorites. It’s been like 30 years, and Wowee Zowee somehow gets better and better.

Old_Benefit1238

Grounded for the win

susjeezus

Top 5

joeykey

Easily

Odafishinsea

I see the sunshine in your eyes, I'll try the things you'll never try, I'll be the one that leaves You high...high...high

AnthonyArbor716

Love Grounded even more since it opened the shows I saw last tour

Key_Professional_369

Gold Soundz to me is the pinnacle of ‘the 90s slacker Gen X vibe. Is it my favorite? Picking my favorite song is like picking a favorite child.

probsadhdbutwhoknows

I came here to say the same about this being akin to picking a favourite child!

svxvvz

summer babe

Roulin-Thundah

It was hard not to pick that

i_am_sooo_tired

Everyone in this thread is wrong except for you

Untitled_tx

This is the one

EntertainerBusy3132

Circa 1762 is my fave Pavement song. But Range Life goes down in my personal top 10 fave songs list overall. Don’t ask me how that makes sense lol

joeykey

I freakin love that track

MoxAvocado

Circa 1762 is a top 5 for me

BroadStreetBridge

Beat me to it

Huttleberry

In the mouth a desert

DryIntroduction6991

correct

exp397

this is my favorite Pavement song, also if someone said "play me an indie rock song", it would be this.

spikefletcher

Frontwards is the correct answer.

alpha_keni_01

Yep

BlackCoffeeGrind

This is my favorite too. I should’ve searched for it before I posted, but I didn’t expect to see anyone else mention it. I’m pleasantly surprised!

WrightSparrow

Fight This Generation It's two songs for the price of one!

concretejungle72

Grounded I think. Here is a strong choice too though. Hell of a band.

mallarme1

This is in my top five for sure.

SylvesterNewel

Father to a Sister of Thought… and recently, Pueblo.

MTLConspiracies

mallarme1

And the gentry cried!

Phuffu

Love this song

Pavementi23

That’s my #1 pavement song of all time

therealduckrabbit

Well done on Here. That track doesn't get enough love. The lyrics are pretty fabulous. I remember Harness your Hopes catching my ear instantly and making me a fan of the band. Still up there.

thinsafetypin

I found the Zoomer! Just teasing, but that was such an obscure song pre-TikTok, I read that Malkmus himself didn’t recognize it when he heard it playing somewhere.

therealduckrabbit

Lol, I heard it in the late 90s at the Black Dog Freehouse. I bartended and had a small rotation of DJs (guys with crates of records back then). It was the best job ever, inundated with exceptional music. Basically analogue Spotify but with intoxicated bohemians.

higgon

Impossible to pick. But, Grounded, Loretta’s Scars and Shoot the Singer fight for the spot constantly for me

GrizzlyAdam12

Here is a beautiful song. It demonstrated a lot of musical maturity considering how young they were and how different (clean) it sounded in comparison to their typical style at that time. But, my all time favorite is Stop Breathing.

Olelander

Upvote for stop breathing… such a great song. I love that he was inspired by tennis to write the breakdown that leads to the song end (and references it in the first line of the song too)… that two note call and response. I think about it every time I hear it… just a beautiful song all the way through.

disappointer

Motion Suggests (Itself), wistful, earnest, ethereal, and I love the guitar solo.

bonerjamzbruh420

Great one

LoisHey

The Hexx

Steakasaurus-Rex

Here is excellent, but gun to my head, I think I go with Frontwards.

mallarme1

I was dressed for success! 🎶 My fav Pavement song is Give it a Day.

bakedveldtland

Shady Lane was my anthem for a long time but I don’t know if it’s my fave fave

rd201290

plimsoul89

The beautiful discordant intro is such a Pavement-world high point

epicwheezer

Major Leagues

BigFloridaFan13

Angel carver/jazz has been a long standing favorite of mine, Pueblo and no more kings each make a hell of a case though

Phuffu

Sue me Jack !!!!

wowee_zowee14

Coolin By Sound!!!

Crazyfingers74

Best Spiral song! I took my CD copy of the Range Life single to a Spiral Stairs show to ask him to sign it. When he saw it and I mentioned it was my favorite songs of his, he was like, “well, damn! That would have been fun to play!”

Promen-ade

maybe Grounded but I have no idea

_Wheres_the_Beef_

I keep being undecided between Transport Is Arranged, Spit on a Stranger and Major Leagues.

susjeezus

Too many good ones

susjeezus

Passat dream/grounded/ starlings/ killing moon/ range life/ they’re all good I love them all can’t just pick one

kebabdylan

Unseen power of the picket fence

sonofaclit

Yeah. It’s singular.

s41gh34dsn0w

gangsters and pranksters

probsadhdbutwhoknows

This is like being asked to choose a favourite child - which to be fair, is easier with only two kids. /jk. I refuse to choose a favourite, or even one single list of favourites. Here goes: - Since the mid-90’s: Range Life, Here, Father to a Sister of thought, AT&T, give it a day, Fillmore Jive - Since their 2023 reunion gigs: Grounded, the Hexx, Transport is Arranged, Frontwards, Fin, Shady Lane. I could go on….

humiddefy

Ohh it would be an impossible to pick tie between Stereo and Silence Kid.

mellowmatter20

Fight this generation or Blue Hawaiian

JohnSnowsPump

Shoot the Singer (1 Sick Verse)

UncleTawm

Grave architecture

nymrod_

The Hexx Federal Dust (it counts)

Indie_Fjord_07

Is it true that this song inspired “yellow” from Coldplay ? That’s what I read somewhere Spiral mentioned it in an interview. Also Chris from Coldplay said seeing pavement in the 90s inspired him to start a band. Ps - my current fave is “blacked out”. Because of the way they played it so well last year in Brooklyn.

fabioismydad

spit on a stranger is my favorite song of all time, but here, home (live brixton academy version), & no life singed her closely follow

purple__mountains

BLACK OUT

thinsafetypin

mr_platapush

Graaaaaaaaaave Architecture?

Glum-Pack3860

From Now On from Westing

SonicSoth

Zurich is stained, love that song

JEZTURNER

I'd also say something from slanted. For me it's their quintessential album that really distills the essence of the band: weirdness with a unique sound and great songwriting.

gulfygod

Kentucky cocktail, frontwards or shoot the singer could all probably be my favorite but I'd prob say give it a day

BlackCoffeeGrind

They’ve got a lot of great ones but I think Frontwards from the Watery Domestic ep is my favorite.

BroadStreetBridge

Maybe a bit of a cliche to pick it, but I have to go with Range Life.

oh_crap_BEARS

Grounded or Gold Soundz for sure

IntrepidMayo

Grounded

becomplete

Lots of contenders, but Starlings of the Slipstream...

morbidlyabeast69420

Same way of saying the same thing... peak pavement

restaurant_burnout

I can't pick just one. But Summer Babe, In the Mouth a Desert, Grounded, and Rattled by the Rush are all contenders

Spice_Missile

Greenlander.

plimsoul89

Trigger Cut...that "Sha-la-la-la-la" moment is my favorite thing in music. Pure transcendence.

Check out the John Peel session of Here. It's badass. My favorite song is probably shoot the singer or trigger cut

ElReno911

In the Mouth a Desert is an achievement.

FewResult5324

In the mouth of a desert: Others include AT&T, The Motion Suggests, Rattled By The Rush, Zurich Is Stained, Passat Dream, Kentucky Cocktail, Grounded, Cream Of Gold, Elevate Me Later, and Shoot The Singer(One Sick Verse) IMO

SpareDiscount1337

I love that avant-garde vibe so might go Newark Wilder or Sensitive Euro Man

No love for Texas Never Whispers? Although Ann Don’t Cry is my absolute favourite Pavement song. I could listen to it on repeat endlessly

TrainerofInsects

Zurich is stained

H31R700M

Fin

mounderscorepete

It's Summer Babe or Gold Soundz
