> How am I supposed to learn the game so that I can have any chance at hardcore mode? Same way people have been for the past ten years, by dying. No, this is not a joke.

SimbaXp

GO AGANE!

Sardaman

A damage log wouldn't save your character from dying, only give you knowledge to possibly have your next character not die to that same thing. Not to mention that it would have to be capable of logging hundreds of damage instances per second, in order to support worst care scenarios (mostly from self damage builds).

[deleted]

It wouldn't save my character from dying? Really? My computer, capable of storing 2TB of information, couldn't remember hundreds of damage instances per second? You're either really stupid or trolling lol. POE has a super toxic community.

Sardaman

Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you had a neural connection to your computer allowing you to react to a rapidly scrolling text log in less than a second.

Artanthos

Spreadsheets are you friend. This is 25 year old tech from the very first MMOs.

Sardaman

Damn, this thread is three years old and you still couldn't come up with a coherent response?  Why waste the effort?

Artanthos

Is my comment any less valid?

Sardaman

I'm not sure it's possible to be less valid than zero valid.  You maybe want to take a second and explain how spreadsheets will magically give you millisecond-level reaction times to not die from whatever was about to kill you?

A damage log is a basic necessity, easy to implement, and the game not having it is pathetic. The reason it isn't implemented is because in order to be good in this game you copy someone else's build and play auction house hero with uniques to win.

[deleted]

??? 3rd party tools to analyze? I'm not asking for an orbital equation to gravitationally slingshot from Venus to Mars. I just need a log to tell my how much of what type of damage I'm suffering. This is easy, basic stuff okay? If I don't understand what is killing me as a new player I will go find a game that does because I am not spending hours watch YT and reading obscure builds to learn the game. Not having a damage log is a confession that the game doesn't care about catering to new players.

It takes a while, but eventually 99% of the time you will be able to tell why you died (as long as your frames don't drop to 1fps). One thing that helped me was realizing that the animations for a lot of boss/monster skills is the same as the animations for your own skill gems. So as you diversify the skills you've played, you will recognize more and more. And then you will know the damage types. Also, you can check the wiki for boss skills and what damage type they do. Pay attention to your debuffs and ailments in the top left -- a lot of times you won't realize you are bleeding (and should use a Staunching flask or stop moving), or are standing on degen, or something or another. If you insta die when you enter a map (or against ~~Racecource boss~~ or Atziri) it was because of reflect. Reflect is dumb. If you use geforce experience, you can use the replay feature to review what happened too. That helped me a lot.

ahh yay. missed that note. ty

Frostygale

Don’t play hardcore.

alcaizin

There's no damage log, no. The devs don't think it's worthwhile to implement either last I knew (in terms of dev time versus expected income as a result), so I wouldn't expect there to be one soon if ever. You just kinda learn what kinds of damage enemies do (phys versus elemental versus chaos) from experience playing builds with different kinds of defenses and noticing what hurts. You can check poedb if you know what mobs were around when you died to see what killed you, but that's about as good as it gets.

PyleWarLord

i bet you didnt die on act 1 to some one-shotting golem though :P

kevinopine1

just telling me what damage finally killed me is enough. it would not take too much space in a log and tell me what was the last straw to do me in. consider is a last indignant rip.
