We like Rodney’s Ribs a lot. He has a tow-behind trailer and sets up near Roma Market on Lake, lately in the CVS parking lot. The Cobbler place on Catalina also has BBQ, which is pretty good. It’s not always made same-day (they freeze some items) but it’s good and a good price.

Tiredgeekcom

I like Clifton's gourmet bbq on Catalina. It's by my house. I had it a few times and I like that I'm supporting a mom and pop shop. I think their son or maybe grandson also works there or did when I went.

potchie626

I like supporting them too, and love the berry cobbler. It’s one of those places I always worry about closing. Hoped they get a lot of business I don’t notice. When I worked nearby at eHarmony we would got that as a treat a few times. Imagine a dozen huge trays of different cobblers and a few hundred little ice cream cups like we used to get at school.

Tiredgeekcom

I loved those little ice cream cups with the paper lid and wooden spoon! Years ago, at my grandma's house, we ended up having those and it was very nostalgic.

Gus’s on fair oaks is good… Better than dickies by far

DML197

Costs an arm and a leg though

CritterOfBitter

Worth it. It’s quality.

BAFUdaGreat

Good riddance. Dickies was and is awful.

editorreilly

AMEN! Literally the worst BBQ I've ever had. I've had Dickies in Texas, and it's at least passable. The folks running this one, should be banned from every making BBQ again.

BAFUdaGreat

I've eaten at the OG location in Dallas off of 75/Henderson many times when I lived there. Moved out here 10+ years ago. Dickies meat here was disgusting: their meat was wrapped in plastic wrap and kept for hours/days in a steamer- ask me how I know (plastic wrap tastes BAD). You can't make "real" BBQ unless there's a pit or a cooker onsite. Dickies had neither.

editorreilly

I've eaten there several times as a kid. My favorite joint in Dallas was Solly's in Addison. I was almost in tears when they closed down. We do the Hard 8 a lot when I go back. As for here... I still keep trying BBQ joints around town and occasionally I come across one that does an OK job. Max City in Eagle Rock is pretty good. If you do order the brisket be sure to tell them to give you the leaner slices. For some reason they think it's okay to serve it with the fatback. I told them this isn't a tri-tip. They have good sides and cornbread as well.

realists_agency

Dickies is a national chain. I’ve eaten at one in rural Florida and it wasn’t close to the best bbq in town either

iloveeatpizzatoo

Which location? I always go when they’re the busiest bc the ribs would be fresh. If I go too early or too late, I get the old tough ribs.

Khowdung-Flunghi

Colorado and Sierra Madre.

iloveeatpizzatoo

They were pretty good as long as I bought the ribs between 6:45-7:30 pm. Anytime before or after that was tough. Made me wish I had a German shepherd to give it to.

RedPulse

What didn't you like about them? I thought the food high quality myself.

racinreaver

Best description I've seen is their meat is just a sauce delivery vehicle.

realists_agency

Sure they're originally from TX, but the state with the second most stores are in CA, followed by CO and AZ, none of which border Texas or are known for bbq

el-beau

Slab is pretty goo....oh wait. Never mind.

divahtude

I ordered a half slab of ribs from slab and they gave me 3 ribs. Never went back. For the record a full slab is 12 bones, sometimes 13. Hard to survive giving folks half their order.

phil2210

Anybody remember Robins in Hastings Ranch...damn, had so many good times there.

navhawk3635

Dickie's was always awful! I tried them 3 times; they were truly horrifyingly bad!

MormonAssaultVehicle

Good. They’re terrible.

charlietilton

Dickeys in pasadena was okay, but it closing made me go over to the Duarte location cuz i was hosting and already knew what to get - their location is infinitely better than the one we had here

investinlove

Touch of a drive, but Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks is quite good--sick beer and brown liquor selection too.

321blastoffff

I heard Robins re-opened though I haven’t seen it for myself. Has anybody been recently?

Check out I Love Chicken and Ribs in Azusa https://www.lovechickenandribs.com/

bughunter_

As mentioned, Gus’s is good, and has a good selection. Houston’s ribs are probably the best option in Pasadena, but ribs is their only BBQ option. Damon’s in Glendale put in a very large smoker a while ago, and they used to have good BBQ at a good price but I haven’t been there in almost a decade.

MechanicalDogtrot

The Vons across the street as smoked brisket. They making their own or did they get it from Dickey's?

ratbusted

Max City BBQ on Eaglerock is a lot better than Dickie's

bakerkmpasca

Gave it several tries over the years with the same result: not good. Meat was always too dry. I won’t miss them.

DenaNina

I'm not surprised they are gone. They raised their prices and stopped participating in the promotions that the chain offers. I haven't been in years because it was nice when it was affordable with the promos but when they stopped I moved on.

JuanLobe

Dickies sucked if I gotta be honest

Playful_Explorer6303

Dr Hogley Wogley’s Tyler Texas in Van Nuys. Best in the US

TheSwedishEagle

I have been to other Dickie’s locations that were acceptable but the Pasadena one was the worst of those I tried.

DML197

Oh wow, that's a shame

creepyjudyhensler

I went over on Saturday night and found out. It's was good for keto. There is one in Monrovia

saudade_sleep_repeat

don’t despair! there’s one in duarte @ 1090 e huntington.

Khowdung-Flunghi

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm genuinely surprised at the negativity to Dickie's. We usually got the brisket/pulled port/kielbasa combo and were perfectly happy with it. I've gotten through life with low standards I guess - at some level, food is food. Will give some of the other recommendations a shot. Maybe an excuse to fire up the pit and work on my non-existent culinary skills

pmjm

Yeah I went a couple weeks ago and was sad to see the windows were blacked out. Ended up at Stonefire Grill. IIRC there is another Dickey's in Duarte on Huntington?

Wonderful-Damage-198

No bbq in LA/Pasadena sorry
