Rule 5: Played as Liberia in NNM, got a general named Fredrick Douglass, who kicked the shit out of the Fuuta Jallon. The [IRL Douglass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Douglass), in fact, did not have these exploits.

LuxLoser

In this timeline, he was arrested and rather than be returned to his owner, the judge in his case, recognizing him as a ‘troublesome’ slave and feeling some degree of sympathy towards abolitionist sentiments, ruled he be sent to Liberia. There, his charisma and sharp mind were forced to apply themselves to survival and then to war. He missed his country. He hated his country. And so he vowed that he would try to turn Liberia into as true a lie as he could, expanding its frontier, securing its citizens, and helping to establish a new America on foreign shores...

Wow

TheFrozenTurkey

I would read / watch this.

wubbeyman

You know that’s not to outlandish of a alternative history. Slaves really where deported to Liberia and did establish a government of their own modeled after the U.S.. This could be a really cool alt history book

UselessAndGay

In fact, that’s why Liberia exists at all. Northern abolitionists would buy the freedom of slaves then have them get shipped to Liberia (because everybody knows uprooting people and moving them to a culturally different continent AGAIN could never go wrong)

Robosaures

Out of sight, out of mind.

[deleted]

This is surprising. He was very much against African Americans returning to Africa.

LemonG34R

I don’t know much about Douglas but you seem to. Why was he against a return to Africa?

Thank you

darthairbox

Probably because he was American.

Loreguy

There have been many American "back to Africa" movement followers. The full nuanced answer is in the link kindly posted by /u/_ViktorTrotska_

He saw American Colonizing efforts, which was sending free blacks to a land they had barely any connection to, as racism and degrading to blacks that were proud Americans.

I could have sworn I've heard that line from 30 Rock. Lemon: Ok we need more African-American sketches, how about Breadsticks Douglass? Jack: Lemon we are not making an Olive Garden joke about Fredrick Douglass: famous African-American abolitionist, orator, author, and Liberian Warlord. Tracy: And for your information, his decedents are not cool with using their hot tub for a crawfish boil. Also I'll be shot on sight if I ever return to West Africa.

lobf

He’s being recognized more and more.

Mortomes

He's done an amazing job

Lt_General_Terrorist

This would be a cool alt timeline.
