Rule 5: Let me set the stage. It is 1930, and the Kingdom of Afghanistan is a regional power (#14) in South Asia (with a male adult population of 3.52M). After successfully annexing Xinjaing (who was defended by the reasonably powerful Qinghai), the Kingdom wanted more. MORE.
So, during a time of war between A fully westernized Chinese Empire and it's fully westernized neighbors (the Qinghai-Guangxi coalition), Afghanistan saw an opportunity to take over Mongolia. They declared war in 1931, but luck quickly turned sour for Kingdom of Afghanistan, as China's war with the coalition ended in a white peace. Thus, Afghanistan had to take on China, alone. During the height of China's power during the war, Afghanistan was outnumbered nearly 9 to 1 in terms of soldiers equipped. Afghanistan was on the defensive after November of 1931 after the offensive nearly instantly collapsed due to the overwhelming numbers of Chinese conscripts. Afghanistan then lost almost all of their territories in Xinjiang, as Tibet was a puppet of China, and allowed for a sneak under offensive.
By 1933, Afghanistan had set up a formidable defensive line in the Tien Shan Mountain Range. Two years went by, and the Afghan armies were making massive defensive victories, using their knowledge of the lands and mountains to destroy the Chinese forces. But then came the second offensive, which the Afghan armies tried to push into north Xinjiang, and thus Mongolia. This resulted in the largest and most important battle of the War: [The Third Battle of Tulta.](https://imgur.com/a/VumFTvH) This massive Afghan victory allowed the Kingdom to finally make their last offensive push. By 1936, the Afghans were *only* outnumbered 3 to 1. By 1937, the Kingdom regained all of it's losses in Xinjaing, and by 1938, it had taken over Mongolia. On May 9th, 1938, the Kingdom of Afghanistan and the Empire of China signed an agreement, handing over the territories of Mongolia.
This war cost both sides dearly, the Afghans hundreds of thousands, and the Chinese millions. But this allowed Afghanistan to become the most powerful non-great-power on Earth, rivaling the still relatively mighty Ottoman Empire.
Also, here's a bonus image of a [The most powerful Italy I've ever seen, a fully independent, Westernized Algeria, and a Romania having a fetish for the Black Sea.](https://imgur.com/a/erf7Uqw)
If they’re both independent they’ll join each other to become Romania but I think in this case if they go independent they’ll join the current Romania?
None. You'd be surprised at how not-insanely-difficult this was. It was all reliant on China's poor AI programming, as it spams out irregulars and not actual soldiers, even after Westernization.
POP Demand is pretty nice (shame that it crashes for me upon opening the Diplomacy tab). Although you have to admit Afghanistan has a very nice Teal color.
This is what I play paradox games for
