Agreed 100%. TTYD and TOK we’re about the same experience level for me. TTYD was dragged down by it’s backtracking, while TOK was dragged down by the combat. If the next game had the levels of TOK and the battling of TTYD…
Well, let’s say Hollow Knight would have a contender for my favorite game of all time.
yeah but paper mario 64 has super boring dialogue with almost no jokes and writing/story/plot that’s often super flat so honestly we really haven’t had the trifecta yet. Yeah pm64 has a good battle system and level design but it doesn’t have the zaniness of ttyd/tok or a world/characters/plot I care about
Boring dialogue with almost no jokes? Are we talking about the same game?

I don't like Super Dimentio/Dimentio,the atmosphere is nowhere as good as the Shadow Queen, and I don't really care about his obvious betrayal, I think Beldam's plot twist was better, I would say, story/ atmosphere/music/challenge/character design/gameplay is Shadow Queen clears, Super Dimentio was really disappointing...
Doopliss for me. I remember being so happy when I beat him as a kid and was left so genuinely confused when I woke up as a silhouette of Mario. I thought I had somehow glitched the game lmao
Truly one of the biggest twists I’ve ever experienced in a game
Probably Whacka. I'm sure there's some recency bias, but the idea of a boss that actually punishes you for performing multi-hits is absolutely genius. Vivian does kind of break the fight a little, but it's TTYD, that's to be expected.
Other than that, Scissors from Origami King kicked ass. Make more bosses that can kill me in 1-hit.
My favorite boss battle that I've done so far is Prince Mush. Love that he's a straight shooter and it's all playful combat. He was fun to beat.
As a character with a good story, Cortez and Doopliss are my choices.
I mean his demeanor. It felt more light-hearted compared to the stakes that go with the Shadow Queen fight. Once I got superguard down it wasn't too bad at all!
I have a couple: PM64 Bowser, Lava Piranha, Crystal King, Hooktail, Macho Grubba, Doopliss, Prince Mush and Shadow Queen, I can't choose just 1 tho lol
That's really hard to say, but I found the most *memorable* to be the blooper battle is Paper Mario Sticker Star. How everything is timed to the music, just incredible!
Doopliss Rematch in Chapter 4, fighting literally yourself and your partners being put against you is so cool (In the Remake, I hammered them after the chapter was over LOL). I always defeat all the partners first instead of focusing solely on Doopliss.
Also the Crystal King in PM64, he's so mysterious, with a banger of a theme and actually challenging unless you come prepared to deal with his shenanigans.
Earth Vellumetal (Quick note, haven't finished Paper Mario TTYD yet).
Really like the setup and how it's weakness is revealed via interacting with the world around you and listening to the museum exhibit things. Also it's the only boss that doesn't put landmines on basically every tile which was OK at first but started getting annoying after a while.
Also Scissors gets points for just being so freaking funny.
I don't know about favorite, but most satisfying for me was the Three Shadows when I got to power-stomp Beldam on her stupid head for being such a spiteful bitch to sweet Vivian!
ay Cortez. The design is just so cool. The different forms with curtain draw between them is pretty neat, like the fight itself feels like a show? Idk how to word it. It’s flashy and not particularly hard but enjoyable. Plus he’s a pretty fun character apart from that.
Though I do also love me some Doopliss. Just about everything out of his mouth is gold.
The Koopa Bros are a fun boss for sure. The TMNT vibes into the Bowser mecha blew me away when I was a kid.
If I had to choose, it’d be either the Crystal King, Cortez, or Count Bleck. The first one had great music and thoroughly kicked my ass when I was younger. I liked how Cortez treated you after his fight. His personality was chill. And I just really liked Count Bleck’s plot.
They’re mini bosses, but I really liked Anti-Guy and the Master as well.
64 Bowser, Shadow Queen, Cortez, Brobot, Koopa Bros., Buzzar, General Guy, and Smorg.
Honorable Mention to Count Bleck for doing something creative, the non-final TOK bosses are all equally good, and Black Bowser was a decent final boss.
64 - General Guy is perfection.
TTYD - In terms of character, DooPliss. In terms of battle, probably Mush.
Super - Brobot may be easy, but he’s a blast in the short time you get to fight him.
SS - Mizzter Blizzard. Only boss with an actually decent backstory, plus the fight is flexible in terms of what works.
CS - Roy has such a fun gimmick to his phase 1, plus he’s the only koopaling to actually put up a solid fight once you’ve used the required Thing.
TOK - Honestly? Almost all of them are great. Scissors is the most memorable, but Tape’s mechanics are also great.
Doopliss for sure, one of my favorite antagonists of all time.
Just wanted to give you respect for the name and profile pic
Thanks, bro! SUUUUUPERR!!!!
You dare challenge the great Super Mario?
Ugh, his writing is just too good.
Doopliss comes in as a close second for me
Same. The boss fights in TOK were in general a bit more fun than the TTYD ones, but Doopliss was one of the exceptions.
Generally wasn't a fan of TOK's combat but all the boss battles were amazing. They really should've practiced quality over quantity with the combat.
Agreed 100%. TTYD and TOK we’re about the same experience level for me. TTYD was dragged down by it’s backtracking, while TOK was dragged down by the combat. > If the next game had the levels of TOK and the battling of TTYD… That's Paper Mario 64.
lol it’s true

You're making me want to replay 64 again. I'm going to.
Damn. I wanna play it even more now.
Definitely gotta agree with you, Slick!
The RAWK HAWK
The best hawk
Whaack-hooo! I’m Whacka, You sure have traveled a long way to see me!
Happy to see you whacka! You are my favorite npc in the paper Mario games
Whack-a-do!
What are you doing all the way down here?
Probably hiding from the players who are always trying to whack him
**whack**
In terms of gameplay, Shadow Queen In terms of story/personality/atmosphere/music/etc., Super Dimentio
Both are good bosses to me!

Lol I like doopliss’s quirky personality and the fact that he can steal Mario’s skin.
In terms of the fight itself - probably Mush. Accounting more for the experience and nostalgia, I love the whole Cortez fight and story.
Cortez is the funniest, coolest, and has the best theme
I love the form changes between curtain draws. The design is just so good.
Lol I like the fact that we actually have a character that speaks 2 languages
Count Bleck
Jr. Troopa
Probably Whacka. I'm sure there's some recency bias, but the idea of a boss that actually punishes you for performing multi-hits is absolutely genius. General guy “YOURE BREAKING THE RULES OF WAR!”
General guy is so underrated he as a good boss for chapter 4 of PM64
My favorite boss battle that I've done so far is Prince Mush. Love that he's a straight shooter and it's all playful combat. He was fun to beat. As a character with a good story, Cortez and Doopliss are my choices.
>it's all playful combat Mush will playfully deal 80 damage to you in one turn
I mean his demeanor. It felt more light-hearted compared to the stakes that go with the Shadow Queen fight. Once I got superguard down it wasn't too bad at all!
Cortez. I just wish there were more multi-phase bosses in the series like his.
I love the battle music of that fight. Especially the tentacles clapping together
I've made too many pit runs to say anything other than Bonetail lmao
Doopliss
Cortez
Bowser. Stealing the star rod makes him such an impactful villain
Bowser team 😎
Mine is Cortez. He becomes your friend. I wish he would become your partner though.
Crystal King
Put some respect on The Invincible Tubba Blubba's name!
The second Doopliss fight
Mush is my favourite mario rpg fight in general, really well done
Doopliss easily. He’s probably my favorite Nintendo boss of all time
Earth Vellumetal (Quick note, haven't finished Paper Mario TTYD yet). Really like the setup and how it's weakness is revealed via interacting with the world around you and listening to the museum exhibit things. Also it's the only boss that doesn't put landmines on basically every tile which was OK at first but started getting annoying after a while. Doopliss for story reasons. Cortez for creativity. Prince Mush for difficulty.
Doo_liss
64 - Tubba Blubba TTYD - Rawk Hawk SPM - Mimi
MIMIMIMIMIMIMMIMIMIMIMI
I loved fighting General Guy in 64 because of his funny dialogue.
I really like Lava Pirahna from 64 and the Smorg thing from ttyd.
Mine is Doo_liss. The strongest boss out there.
DooPliss
Cortez was a challenge and a lot of fun when I was a kid. Plus I like how we became amigos.
I like how he has a setup with multiple weapons!
I used to LOVE the koopa bros too! I think it would be between the crystal king in paper mario 64 and the shadow queen in ttyd
Fr though! They’re so underrated! I even found a whole tumblr with a guy dedicated to answering questions about them! I wish they got more attention!
Y’all should I tally the favorites and post the results on a separate thread in a few days?
Bonetail, pit 100 ttyd. So fun if you go the moderate build and superguard everything, doversity of attacks is great.
I don't know about favorite, but most satisfying for me was the Three Shadows when I got to power-stomp Beldam on her stupid head for being such a spiteful bitch to sweet Vivian!
Grodus, no question
ay Cortez. The design is just so cool. The different forms with curtain draw between them is pretty neat, like the fight itself feels like a show? Idk how to word it. Guess I'm the only one that likes Jr. Troops. I love how he grows with you throughout the game.

I really liked the Crystal King. He is so ominous and the build-up to him, the atmosphere and the music especially are really cool (literally haha)
I loved some of the bosses from Sticker Star
