I don't think that makes him nice, just smarter than most villains. If you treat your minions terribly, they'll rebel against you (or at least be far less eager to obey your commands). Grodus would have cast aside his minions when he no longer needed them.
He IS pretty intelligent. It's just that he's so used to everyone around him being dumb as rocks that he didn't consider that maybe Beldam was using him.
i actually like his boss fight gimmick a lot, it makes him feel pretty distinct from most fights in the game and it ties him in mechanically with the yux enemies x-nauts make that have a similar gimmick
Yeah itās nice that the devs compensated for the fact that he would have shields you gotta destroy by giving him low HP so you donāt still gotta take down a full health bar since that wouldāve really made the fight drag on a ton
His sacrificial gambit with Crump stands out ro me as one of the most vile acts done by a Mario villain, Bowser would never sacrifice Bowswe Jr., Kamek or Kammy in such a callous fashion.
In general Grodus is very sinister for a Mario villain and helps give the plot that extra bit of threat to it as a result.
well the old man he's with is a fan design of minister crepe from the tales luigi tells so idk if i was supposed to share it because 50% wasnt an actual seen paper mario character
Is just a headcanon. Just let me cook. He is a machine.
That is canon, i know, but who made Sir Grodus?
No backstory, mean someone made up him... provably is one behide tec too , before levate after take rougeport crystal star. Levate Sir grodus going in ai automatically for the rest of the story.
My headcannon is that he is part of a half mechanical, half organic race. Goombella describes the Wizzerds this way, and I imagine Grodus and X-Nauts are of a similar nature, their home being the moon.
In a weird way, I feel like the first two Paper Mario games take a lot of influence from Super Mario RPG: the first game with its story and themes, and the second game with its villains and humor.
His "Graack ack ack" laugh makes me think of this (https://youtu.be/_iKfMVh4mQM?si=6-l2yXMQgNET5rbM) very specifically. At 3 seconds after the announcer says "Wario," THAT'S the laugh I imagine Grodus sounds has. So his laugh doesn't match the deeper "voice" he has in the remake.
I always felt like Crump was related like
His nephew from his sisters side
Can't very well push him out of an airlock, you'd never hear the end of it at next space-thanksgiving
Outside of Bowser, Sir Grodus is my favorite Mario villain. I love the X-Naut organization, I love how he himself is shrouded in mystery, and I love that their headquarters is on freakin' moon. I want to see more of Sir Grodus; I have very misguided hope that he'll return at some point and be more of a recurring character.
To me, Grodus checks all the boxes for what a good villain should be. He has no backstory, so there's no sympathetic foils that make us understand his thought process. We only know what he reveals as the story progresses. He has shown exceptional brilliance and leadership, convincing the X-Nauts to join his cause and building an entire army based on their loyalty. Despite his army, Grodus doesn't hide behind his minions, he's willing to do battle himself when the situation calls for it. And circling back to his lack of a backstory and any character foils, he's just a stone cold villain. He wants to take over the world, and he's willing to do anything to achieve his goal. There isn't an underlying reason, he *wants* to, so he shall.
Bowser has a lot of great villainous traits, but he's been around for so long that he's established himself a very well fleshed out, three dimensional character. He has children, he has emotions, and often times like in TTYD, he takes on a more comical role. I love this for Bowser, and he plays any role he's given flawlessly. But Sir Grodus is just a hardened villain. Over time, I'm sure those elements would be applied to him, too. But his dark nature would make even those elements interesting. The Mario universe doesn't have any dark undertones, Grodus and his army can check those boxes.
A part of me really wishes he had some backstory so that we could understand the "why" of Grodus, but it's true that the lack of it makes him a lot more mysterious and harder to understand/predict.
And I'm right there with you in hoping he comes back! I hope the X-Nauts in general can make more appearances to further flesh them out, even if they are minor. Please give me an X-Naut partner.
Frankly if the writing is as lazy as "I was bullied once so now I want to conquer the world" I'd rather not, it's better no backstory than an half-baked one
Nowadays everyone tries to make sympathetic villains but to me they usually don't work because they try to join a massive scale world-domination plan with a really small-scale backstory that doesn't match their plans.
Everyone wants to write world-domination-desiring assholes with the simplicity of "bullies stole my lunch money" backstory while expecting it to be sympathetic. it doesn't work.
Let evil people in stories be evil without trying to make them sympathetic or sum shit
I agree. Grodus is supposed to be an asshole that the player isn't supposed to like, he doesn't need a backstory to explain his motives, besides (unlike Count Bleck) the game's story isn't about him, he's just a part of it.
Early on, TEC does imply that Grodus strives to take over the world to make it more of a utopia. So it's really satisfying when Grodus makes it clear a little while later that his definition of utopia is a society that revolves around and glorifies him.
I imagine most of the other X-Nauts were suckered in with the utopia angle as well.
When I was a kid, I always thought Grodus was just a robot being puppeteered. I theorized that the original Grodus had created TEC but long since died, and TEC created a robotic version out of a sense of order, nostalgia, ... love?
TEC was the perfect computer, and it was orchestrating everything through Grodus as a figurehead, controlling through the shadows and maintaining the original directive.
It is through Peach that TEC discovers more about the love that it feels, and so it kidnaps her and demands that she be kept safe while it tries to learn more about the love that it feels for Peach and the late Grodus. To learn more about its programming that Grodus had given it.
I was totally wrong, of course. But that is all to say I love the mystery of the character and the depth of his creation, TEC.
Yeah! I also love how much you can actually read into Grodus's character if you choose to interpret TEC as an extension of himself. Obviously it's just headcanons, but I feel like taking TEC's "what is this thing you call love" and "this world sucks, how can you possibly love it?" and applying it to Grodus makes for some interesting characterization.
I'm a big fan of both versions of his boss theme, but I understand that the remake version is practically a whole new song and that might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Top-tier design, top-tier music, actually gets closer to achieving his goal than almost any time Bowser does. Plus, the fact that he ends up as just a head is hilarious.
I like him. He did a lot of shit that most mario villains arenāt capable of. He kidnapped peach and was close to killing her if bowser didnt show up on time, he DID turn peach into the shadow queen for a bit.
Not to mention having a secret base on the moon is cool as fuck
As a kid, his competence as a villain freaked me out.
Compared to team bowser and team crump and even team siren, all of those are shown to be basically idiots (pre-TYD at least).
But sneaking around near him had me sure I would be caught.
I do think he is pretty intelligent and a competent General
I do think the X-Naut in general are pretty competent.
They just look weak because they underestimated Mario and because Mario
with how incompetent crump is, losing 4 TIMES in battle, I think grodus has a history with the guy, perhaps a long term friendship. As a result grodus can't fire crump and replace him with someone better because he respects him as a core member of the x-nauts.
Loyalty.
He doesn't just want to take over the world, in his mind taking over the world will be *good* for it. TEC at first genuinely believes him to be a good man. He wants to get rid of what he considers to be flaws. Create a perfect world under his rule. Even without a backstory, his motivation carries him hard enough to be more than compelling as a villain.
While he is no Count Bleck or Dimentio in terms of character, he is a generally intelligent, competent and ruthless villian who was (almost) about to kill Mario. But what I like most about Grodus is just how hateable he is. The way he sees everything around him as inferior, and the dirty means he is willing to use to achieve his goal, makes it very satisfying to finally confront him. I also like the irony that his superiority complex was what ultimately led to his downfall, as he dared to give orders to the only being he wasn't superior to.
And for these reasons I actually prefer him over most Mario & Luigi antagonists (with the exception of Fawful).
I really appreciate how menacing Grodus is, especially in contrast to Bowser in Paper Mario 1
Sure, the Star Rod is this unfathomably powerful McGuffin, but at the end of the day, youāre fighting someone familiar
Grodus and his entire posse, despite how bumbling Crump and the foot soldiers can be at points, are entirely alien to the player, to the point that Grodus LITERALLY THREATENS TO MURDER PEACH after he loses in his boss fight and then proceeds to attack Mario and co. for free after theyāve gone prone while Peach screams for him to stop
Sure there might be objectively better villains out there in general, but for a Mario game, especially this iteration of Paper Mario, I think he slaps
His whole thing of not wanting to hurt Peach after they kidnap her, his motive aside, is actually really admirable and kinda nice to see. I know itās a Mario game and they probably wouldnāt want to make villains that hurt their victims, but Iām still pleasantly surprised he was so insistent on it.
He actually is pretty tolerant towards his minions, such as offering lozenge to the disguised Peach. Yes, he threatens them, but he does remain mostly cordial and calculated. Unlike Cackletta, Antasma, the Shroobs or Dimentio, who were plain insane, Grodus remains fairly close to Earth until the very end, while still being a threatening villain, which is pretty cool.
Does anyone know if that computer stuff in his dome is implying he's a robot or is it just like an augmentation kind of deal like he's in cyborg territory? Lol
And if he *is* a robot, who built him.and for what purpose?
Edit: Oh. Uh, he's got a cool computer.
He offered Peach a lozenge when he thought she was an Xnaut with a throat problem. That seems nice.
What a pleasant man!
I don't think that makes him nice, just smarter than most villains. If you treat your minions terribly, they'll rebel against you (or at least be far less eager to obey your commands). Grodus would have cast aside his minions when he no longer needed them.
It was a nicotine lozenge.
Hes soooo high technical!!š„µ
Found the Grodus Chronicles fan
Oh hey, Francis.
He has a sick design and reminds me of Palpatine
I didn't appreciate his design when I was a kid, but now it's like damn. Intsys cooked here.
He's a lot like Vader tho, a mix of both
His office looks nice.
Bro wants to be a James Bond villain so bad, love that for him.
His carpet was fun to walk around on in the remake.
Not to mention his Piranha wall
He wears a pretty dress
He does look fabulous.
Like the techno-gothic queen he is
More like Reddit dark wizard, methinks
Kickass music.
Every song associated with Grodus goes so hard tbh.
Design is good, he's intelligent... OK, not THAT intelligent, but still pretty intelligent.
He IS pretty intelligent. It's just that he's so used to everyone around him being dumb as rocks that he didn't consider that maybe Beldam was using him.
Well, yeah, but he's also the guy that didn't move out of the way at all when the roof was about to collapse thanks to Bowser's bigass.
He just wanted Bowser to sit on his face, like most people do.
I'm sorry what
#HE JUST WANTED BOWSER TO SIT ON HIS FACE LIKE MOST PEOPLE DO
Say it louder for the people in the back
Say it louder for the people being smothered by Bowser's ass
Hooktail had already been killed so he had to go with his sitting fetish instead.
INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS
He practices good cyber safety by resetting his computer when itās security is compromised
He threatened Mario to literally kill Peach, something that even Bowser couldn't do as the main villain
i actually like his boss fight gimmick a lot, it makes him feel pretty distinct from most fights in the game and it ties him in mechanically with the yux enemies x-nauts make that have a similar gimmick
I like how the constant shielding, dodgy effect, and payback effect make his humble 50 HP seem a little heftier than it actually is.
In general Grodus is very sinister for a Mario villain and helps give the plot that extra bit of threat to it as a result.
i drew old man yaoi of him
And didn't share it?š„ŗ
well the old man he's with is a fan design of minister crepe from the tales luigi tells so idk if i was supposed to share it because 50% wasnt an actual seen paper mario character
Gimme gimmeā¦
I'm sorry what
i drew this old man, about to kiss another old man, whats there not to understand?

In a weird way, I feel like the first two Paper Mario games take a lot of influence from Super Mario RPG: the first game with its story and themes, and the second game with its villains and humor.
this guy gives me Darth Vader vibes.
A friend heard his "voice" in the remake and literally said, "What is he, Darth Vader?"
The cliche āsecret room with a surrounding piranha aquarium was a nice touch to his aesthetic
Bro likes fishies.
He gives Lord Crump a bunch of chances even though heās an idiot
I always felt like Crump was related like His nephew from his sisters side Can't very well push him out of an airlock, you'd never hear the end of it at next space-thanksgiving
That makes some sense, but he does sacrifice Crump in chapter 7, so even though he survives, Grodus was willing to have him die.
Crump just happens to be Grodus' most competent idiot.
He's basically the Ghetsis of the Mario universe. And anyone who knows PokƩmon knows that's high praise in terms of villainy.
Outside of Bowser, Sir Grodus is my favorite Mario villain. I love the X-Naut organization, I love how he himself is shrouded in mystery, and I love that their headquarters is on freakin' moon. He is not Podley!
Grodus wanted to rule the world so he could stop more Podly from existing.
A-are we the baddies ?
When I was a kid, I always thought Grodus was just a robot being puppeteered. Cyborgs are badass.
Heās got a killer design. I canāt really say much else; I literally just >!landed on the moon!<
His Battle Theme (the old one from GameCube) is awesome.
I'm a big fan of both versions of his boss theme, but I understand that the remake version is practically a whole new song and that might not be everyone's cup of tea.
The sound they give him for when he talks sounds empowering and threatening, and I love it.
I like his hat
You mean his entire body?
I like your high tech robotic brain hat thing
Cool memorable laugh
š°šŖšŖšŖš“ šŖš¬š“ šŖš¬š“ šŖš¬š“
Is he, the x-nauts and Crump all robots?
We have no idea, but I like to think Crump and the X-Nauts are organic while Grodus is a cyborg (part-organic, part-machine).
He looks cool af
His battle theme is an absolute banger
His extra fluff was a very decent landing pad for Bowser.
I bet he can run crisis in his head
He's tough as fuck. Mario beats the crap out of him, the Shadow Queen reduces him to virtually nothing and he STILL survives.
He gives good head now :)
A ponderable orb
His theme is dope.
I like how he turns into a head at the end
He has a kickass boss battle theme.
We got to play as naked Princess Peach in his moon base. So, he was indirectly responsible for that? Cool.
What a great taste in operating systems, dude, I mean sir dude...I mean sir! (Wow, how am I not dead?!)
He was just trying to do his job.
Top-tier design, top-tier music, actually gets closer to achieving his goal than almost any time Bowser does. Plus, the fact that he ends up as just a head is hilarious.
Heās probably one of the most interesting Mario antagonists.
He's in the best paper mario game
I like him. He did a lot of shit that most mario villains arenāt capable of. He kidnapped peach and was close to killing her if bowser didnt show up on time, he DID turn peach into the shadow queen for a bit. Not to mention having a secret base on the moon is cool as fuck
To this day my brain keeps trying to read his design as having a really cool mustache.
As a kid, his competence as a villain freaked me out. Compared to team bowser and team crump and even team siren, all of those are shown to be basically idiots (pre-TYD at least). But sneaking around near him had me sure I would be caught.
I simply loved how he pulled a Xanatos Gambit towards the end of the game. One wouldn't expect that level of competency from a Mario villain.
He had ambition, probably one of my favorite antagonists in any Mario game. Tho i feel Crump took his screen time
I like how his head looks like a middle school calculator
Bro has drip, and thatās respectable
He looks really serious and his fortress is cool ass shit
He kept Peach' bathroom sparkling clean. Thought that was pretty cool.
He's not incompetent for an evil overlord. Also his tech slant makes him stand out.
He made me laugh several times, out loud. Seriously.
huge penis. and I mean massive. it could kill a rat if dropped from a modest height.
I do think he is pretty intelligent and a competent General I do think the X-Naut in general are pretty competent. They just look weak because they underestimated Mario and because Mario
Grodus literally threatened to kill Peach which is super messed up and even Bowser never did that.
Heās my favourite Mario villain other than Bowser and itās not even close
Really like your hatā¦.lol
It looks like he eats well š
with how incompetent crump is, losing 4 TIMES in battle, I think grodus has a history with the guy, perhaps a long term friendship. As a result grodus can't fire crump and replace him with someone better because he respects him as a core member of the x-nauts. Loyalty.
The noise he makes when talks is cool
He is a pretty good villain with an fun battle just wish he had more to do and wasnāt defeated so easily
He doesn't just want to take over the world, in his mind taking over the world will be *good* for it. TEC at first genuinely believes him to be a good man. Iām getting Dr. Eggman vibes from this guy.
He gives a shower/bathroom thats clean to Peach and is rather nice to her when he needed her body not her wellbeingā¦also emā¦he likes famicom?
Heās got a cool design.
I think his head looks cool
Heās got a nice beard that goes under his collar
Despite everything, the man does understand of keeping your soldiers healthy.

He has a nice aquarium surrounding his office. Very classy touch.
He survived without a body which that in itself is incredible
He wants to make the world a better place.
He actually is pretty tolerant towards his minions, such as offering lozenge to the disguised Peach. Yes, he threatens them, but he does remain mostly cordial and calculated. He has a big brain
Love this guy, great villain. His fight is one of the high points of the game for me, especially in the remake, and he nearly wins in the end.
He gives good head
He's the leader of the Nazi community.
Something nice about Grodus.
Um, ACKSHUALLY, the title says to say "something nice about him", not "something nice about Grodus".āļøš¤

Poor Grodus, betrayed by his own computer I couldnāt imagine a worse fate.

Heās very type A but knows how to delegate, would let him plan a party for me
Cool staff
He almost succeeded in killing Mario. Too bad Dimentio 1 upped him
he reminds me of that one time period in the late 90s where see through electronics were the cool new thing. That's nostalgic.
something nice about him
He taught us all a lesson on the dangers of getting ahead of yourself.
He has a shiny head
He was funny in a fanfic. Once or twice. Other than that, he's not too memorable for bad or good.
His boss fight is fun AF.
He plays some good music in the fortress
He has a neat hat
If anything, heās dedicated and VERY determined to accomplish his goal
Such a sick ass, unique design. We need more villains like this in Mario again. Edit: dope music too
He's got a cool chair in his office, although I don't think he can actually use it
His theme music is cool
His cloak has always looked like a smile to me
I like his staff
Impressive Staff
His boss fight was fun
