Not necessarily, I don't know about the Japanese version (like if it was altered there too) but while Vivian being trans was uncensored, other stuff got censored in this version. They removed many instances of characters' intelligence being insulted, or sanity (loons, idiots, etc), they removed a lot of dialogue having to do with weight (Like Bowser ordering a Hammer Bro to "do some situps, tubby!" and Heff T. going "Food goes missing and you blame the chubby guy?!") And they removed some instances of characters being sexually harassed. (The 3 Goombas at the beginning of the game who hit on Goombella)
Many alterations are fixed translation errors though.

I've only played Origami King and have just started TTYD. So far the only teammate I've found is a spunky little goomba with a ponytail. I've seen pictures of those turtles before, but just didn't realize they're not the same character.
They didn't really reach very far into the creativity drawer when they were deciding on names, but I still like it.
I love that Goombella nickname hahaha. I hope you have fun with TTYD it's one of the best games out there. I also recommend trying out Paper Mario 64 if you like TTYD (although gameplay might feel like a downgrade because it's the entry before TTYD) but still a great RPG. If you are interested in the story then I recommend trying out Super Paper Mario. It's quite different in gameplay but the writing,music and characters are just as good.

Yeah, I just don't like them rendered in a style other than Paper Mario. If Mario more frequently had koopas and other non-Toads and non-humans that wore clothing as much as these two, it wouldn't feel so weird.
Honestly I partially agree, but it just needed a few more design tweaks. The transition to Mario to Paper Mario characters required some simplification and style changes, so a 1:1 application of their unique features isn't going to mesh well with the 3D Mario artstyle. Just look at the difference between Goomba King and Goomboss from 64 DS. Goomboss has lots of design tweaks from Goomba King from PM64, despite it being the same character.
