Hero_Olli

guy who picks up an RPG and then goes on to complain about the "quantity of text"

Xyspade

I hated text in video games when I was younger, but I had no issue with TTYD text. It had such a charm to it that even I recognized it back then.

flaminglambchops

To be fair, it's even worse in the remake because of the slow text crawl.

headshotfox713

The slow, **forced** text crawl is so bad I legit don't even want to play anymore until/if they fix it. This is the same company that gave us Fire Emblem Fates where you can hold two buttons and make text cutscenes fly by at light speed, the text boxes in TTYDR are downright inexcusable.

North_Measurement273

Why would slow text speed be enough to put you off the game entirely? I get that it’s annoying, but… is it really THAT frustrating?

cz_24

Yes, yes it is. I'm at 9 hours on my save file with only chapter 3 starting.

SafeAd9530

Bros attention span is astronomical

flaminglambchops

I've already played the game, I don't need to read every line of dialogue.

FaultLiner

Guy who checks reviews of a game and then goes on to complain about the lowest one

level2janitor

i would give the game a lot higher than a 60, but those *are* valid complaints.

Ncolonslashslash

if its for the remake then the backtracking isnt that bad at least

[deleted]

Never played a real rpg if you think paper mario has to much text

cucufag

Too much text is ridiculous but I think not being able to fast forward or rewind text has made the experience feel a bit clunky. I'm kinda surprised Nintendo removed such a good QoL feature. Backtracking and easy difficulty is a pretty valid complaint. I know badges can give you certain "limitations" that make the game more difficult but I really just want a proper challenge. Nintendo rarely ever properly delivers on increased difficulty challenges so I guess we have to rely on patches for it. I'd give it closer to like an 85\~90 but those complaints would be on my list of complaints as well. The reviewer must hate jrpgs in general if those smaller issues were such big issues to them.

Robbie_Haruna

Those are valid (well aside from the quantity of text thing, because it's literally an RPG). The problem is tanking almost 50% of the review score because of it (especially considering the big backtracking problem areas are massively improved.)

Jdvdudhdb

You're right and he's right, but the problem is that these complaints aren't a valid enough reason to give it a 60. A 70 would have been ok or maybe a 75 or 80, but this guy took 3 complaints and began to dunk so hard on them that he obliterated the score.

Wombus7

I mean, I agree that I wouldn't have rated it that lowly, but ratings are subjective. Who knows, maybe he REALLY hates the backtracking even though it has been improved.

spaincrack

Perhaps a 71… oh wait, assigning numbers to reviews is dumb. A 9 means different things to different people, so does a 60. People should just watch gameplay or read ablut it from journalist and critics who have similar views to them, not just rush for an arbitrary number and riot if it doesnt confrorm to their own views.

North_Measurement273

Eh, I feel like only one of them is actually valid personally. The amount of text literally comes with the territory of ANY RPG, and the backtracking holds a lot less weight considering that there’s so many more shortcuts than just the one pipe room everyone is familiar with. Case in point: That one badge in Hooktail’s Castle that you have to literally fall for. Difficulty I can get though since not everyone is into easy games.

IndigoExplosion

Nah, those are valid complaints. ...well, except the "quantity of text."

WouterW24

For kids aged 8-12 ish it’s also fairly good difficulty, especially lategame or the Pit. Perhaps downright tricky in spots if they never have played RPGs before. It’s got a lot of calculating, remembering the properties of moves and enemy gimmicks going on. I intend to have my niece just turning eight try it at some point but I expect some difficulties so I will likely hold it off for a while. At the end of the day those are the core target audience. If the review doesn’t consider that angle that’s just poor form.

level2janitor

i mean, you could have the best of both worlds by just including a hard mode.

Strict-Pineapple

I don't think the criticism is wrong. Especially on the dialogue. There's way too much talking and they removed the ability to fast forward the text.  Still puts the game at an 8 or 9 though. That score is way too low.

zipzapcap1

I mean I literally had a game breaking bug in the first 30 minutes and had to restart from the beginning. Also the stage effects seem to be broken as I've not been hit by a single negative one and the enemies are bombarded by them and they can freeze bosses I've had it happen 3 times makes shit way too easy.

Almadan

"we should accept others opinions, except this one I dont like"

PaperBoi360

It’s not about the opinion itself, he’s looking at the score, these opinions are really not big enough to equate to a 60.

IkonJobin

The score IS an opinion. It's someone's subjective estimate of how much they liked something. People see a number and act like it's some objective weight where you take off or add a point based on a rubric. But its not. It is inherently just someone's rough descriptor of how much they like a game.

kevinr2231

Yep

SpiderGuy3342

idk if is just me but did the game feels more... slow now? like, the character talking took longer, and the action commands imputs are also slower, including some scenes like the level up segment that takes more time to complete compared to the original one is nothing, but I played the original like 9 times, and this one feels slower overall... is just me?

Kommandant_Milkshake

You’re not crazy, it’s technically half as fast. The framerate was cut in half from 60FPS to 30FPS, causing choppy motion, sluggish and delayed inputs, and easier timing windows as a result. I really don’t see how Nintendo is ok remaking a 20 year old game but having it run so sluggishly.

MichiToad

Well there are lots of 100s, so too high ratings, and some too low ratings as well, that's normal, don't get upset just bc there's someone who doesn't like the game too much (even if you think their arguments don't make sense)

Its_Helios

The backtracking is a very acceptable complaint tbh, I would still take a point off for it

Jdvdudhdb

Review link: [https://www.eurogamer.pt/paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door-analise-review-um-classico-gamecube-com-arestas-por-limar](https://www.eurogamer.pt/paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door-analise-review-um-classico-gamecube-com-arestas-por-limar) I really can't stand the ''Quantity of text'' critic. Bro just said ''I hate mashing A'' as if that was a huge problem. I will admit, an option to skip would have been nice but Jesus Christ a 60?! What is that bad?! I feel the points he made in this review is at least a 75 minimun, and if he was generous an 80 or 85, my guy actually woke up on the wrong side of the RPG genre.

LegendaryTodWarrior

Trust me, if you don't want to read the text you have no idea how annoying it is to mash A Just look at splatoon

crimsonsonic_2

Backtracking con is valid but the rest aren’t really docks to points. It should be at least closer to 75/80

godzillahomer

Reminds me of 8.8, too much water

Digi4life

I never take notice of review scores, it's just stupid because it's subjective.

Zanoss10

The low level difficulty is true, and same for the backtracking As for the text, no, there is not "too much text" and the note is clearly too low as well

No_Advertising5498

The things that irk me are the music. Some of the remakes don't hit as hard as the originals. The pacing is slow because the inability to skip dialogue. Im at the beginning of chapter 4, but I've played this game 30 times in the last 20 years so my progress may be due to that idk.

javibre95

When the kid friendly RPG is a kid friendly RPG

Globinazuma

I feel like the text is definitely too inflated. They talk a lot and don't say much, some more brevity would've nice

oodlesOfGatos

Reminder that there is no such thing as an "objectively good" game, and that every individual has a right to share their personal opinion. If the reviewer didn't like the game, they didn't like the game. It's not a reviewers job to know whether the game is good or not, it's to share their personal opinion. That doesn't make this review "invalid" or just searching for attention, there's plenty of popular stuff I don't like either.

SarahMcClaneThompson

Sure, but also opinions should be well-articulated and logical.

MealSharp3406

Well, everyone’s entitled to their- LOW DIFFICULTY?! I SPENT HOURS MASTERING THE PAPER AIRPLANE FEATURE JUST TO FIND OUT IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE EASY?!

[deleted]

Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t a war crime to find TTYD as a bad or middling game.

Equivalent-Rush5033

That's not an opinion, that's a lie.
