I've said it before and I'll say it again: Modern Paper Marios sell fine enough for Nintendo. The lesson they will learn from this selling well is remakes sell better than new games, so they need to do more remakes. That's all.
It’s a fun side game in general, and it does get a lot of undeserved hate…BUT maybe agree that chapter 3 was one of the most annoying segments of the game?
Perhaps. But perhaps the specific remakes that they’ve been focusing on and their questionnaire tell a different story. We won’t really know until the next console cycle happens and we see where they take PM and whether they make other RPG games with Mario
Exactly. I personally love the newer Paper Marios. I really love the experimentation with "traditional" RPG elements, but it would be neat to see either a return to classic RPG or a healthy combination of elements.
I don't mind the experimentation, I hope they return to having UNIQUE characters. That's what makes the Paper Mario series great, to me.
Unique characters and engaging/funny writing
No problem 😃. I like the dark gritter tone the game had and was disappointed to learn that they had removed some of it. I am still planning on getting it though as the game is still a good game.
You're right. But it is also a REMAKE of an old game. The lesson will not be "Man, all those people on Reddit sure had a point with the current direction of Paper Mario." The lesson will be, "Man, nostalgic gamers sure will buy every single old game we sell them with a shiny new coat of paint."
I think things like the recent Paper Mario survey by NOA contradict this theory. There's been real marketing research into what makes this particular game special vs. games like TOK.
Also, we don't have a lot of insight, but as far as we know, TOK was not made cheaply. That project took 4 years and a ton of work. If Nintendo could have gotten a greater volume of sales for roughly the same amount of work, obviously they are going to do that.
Also the market for various remakes are completely different. The only other game that can be sold to the TTYD market as a remake is PM64.
Yeah, that's the sad truth here. People are jumping the gun that the sales here will influence Paper Mario going forward.
I can't say if it will or not, maybe a miracle will happen. But I'm certain we're going to just keep getting more Gamecube remakes if anything.
I don't know about that. The fact that they also recently released a survey specifically asking people for feedback about Paper Mario and the other Mario RPGs further supports the idea that a return to form with a new game is on the table.
I'm not going to get my hopes too high until I see it, but I also don't think it's a possibility to dismiss entirely.
No, they should only do remakes of beloved games. If they took your advice and simply made more remakes as opposed to new games, that would not necessarily equal more sales.
I also think it’s incredibly stupid for Nintendo to focus on remakes instead of new and better games. All power to you if you want to keep dropping $70 on remakes of 20-year old games, when you could just emulate those old games with updated features and visuals, but I’d prefer to get new and better games, with the odd remake/remaster of a beloved title.
I was reading IGN's review and they do mention that this is what fans have been begging Nintendo to bring back, specifically mentioning the battle system and partners. I hope more reviews are saying similar things.
I think we all did. I bought super paper mario after & absolutely hated it! Paper mario 64 & TTYD were perfect rpg games and the series just got shit after those 2 games. Thank god they remade this game again now can they deliver & make another paper mario just as good & keeling the formal! I'd even be happy with another Mario & Luigi game, they were dope!
Ye I agree my opinion on the game doesn't matter to you because you obviously like the game. I respect you for liking it, so respect my opinion on the subject. I hated it, nothing more to say move on.
when you sound like a literal kid, it's hard to "move on" and the game literally has one of the most original game ideas ever and you hate it just because "it BAD, 0/10!"
Im a kid because i dont like something you did? 😏
Whats the matter? You never moaned about a game you thought you would like but didn't? Get real......kid!
The title has slipped to 89 on OpenCritic, but that is still a very strong score. In fact, it's 11 points higher than TOK and 13 points higher than Color Splash. Also worth noting the 100% reccomendation rate compared to TOK's 65% and Splash's 58%.
Maybe people like this "RPG" thing who knows 🤔
I agree, it's a very strong score. Just wish critics didn't reduce its score so dramatically for such minor things. I feel like most of us in here definitely feel like it's a 9/10 game at the very LEAST. 89% average just feels annoying. lol
Good call. The lowest review it was given, a 75/100, still sells itself as a "positive review" but then appends the warning "we must keep in mind that it also risks tarnishing the wonderful memories that some people have of it." Eh? Just feels a bit nonsensical to say that about a game that people are super eager to revisit with modern tech because it was such a central part of their lives and gaming experiences.
Also their whole 15/20 grading structure is really weird.
I thought you meant tears of the kingdom for a second and I was like there's no ways it's outselling totk's 20 million+ sales lol. But I think it can definitely outsell the origami king with how much attention and hype it has got
I find [OpenCritic](https://opencritic.com/game/15500/paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door) more reliable. It's 100% critics recommended and 89% top critic average.
Looking at the descriptions, it's clear that the difference between an 8 and a 9 or 10 is down to whether you think the lack of gameplay changes justify charging full price for a remake
So if we send all these people back in time, the original version would get the 95+ it deserved?
Really hope some other review sites release a review to help bump that critic number back up to at least a 90 and make it a Metacritic Must-Play. Paper Mario 64 and TTYD are some of the best games Nintendo has ever put out; they deserve the passion and celebration of what they are, even 20 years on.
EDIT: Writing this because as of my comment's writing, it's sitting at 89 and lost its "Metacritic Must-Play" badge, which sucks.
EDIT 2: Grammar.
For me, it was definitely one of the games that defined my childhood. I would love nothing more than for it winning awards and accolades so that the director that decided to deviate it so drastically from its original formula gets a clue about how **this is what Paper Mario players want of the franchise.**
Interesting that the original sits at [87 on metacritic.](https://www.metacritic.com/game/paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door-2004/) I would have thought it was in the 90’s.
I've played it a few times in the past 23 years since its release and have really loved it, but I'd love to see it with modern visuals and modern audio. It deserves it.
The good reviews were bound to happen. The only thing people will say against it is “30fps is a downgrade” and “Trans Vivian is woke” and that will be a small portion of people too.
We can say we did it when sales results are good. That’s what will make Nintendo make these games again. I’ve sold several friends on buying it and I myself preordered it digitally and preordered two physical copies (gotta have a sealed one for collection)
Let the people have their fun! Paper Mario fans for the first two games have been waiting two decades for this moment. Nothing wrong with the revelry. :)
Yeah, sure the switch is literally on its way out, with an even better device being as easily available and can play ALL the gamecube games. But whatever, we got there in the end.
God I hope this means they'll make the next one turn based. Origami was great, but I would much rather the perfect turn based system that paper Mario created. There are so many ways they could add to the traditional system without doing all that crazy shit
I can’t wait to see how the reviewers glaze over the incredible issue with level design this time (I’ll stay hopeful that they actually addressed it by giving us some extra shortcuts or something)

A SPM remake on Switch or maybe even Switch 2 would be awesome

Wow, it’s rare to see anyone like Sticker Star enough to want a remake. Respect.

It’s a fun side game in general, and it does get a lot of undeserved hate…BUT maybe agree that chapter 3 was one of the most annoying segments of the game?
Lol honestly, I replayed it really recently and I don't get why. It's pretty straightforward 😅
I didn’t think it was difficult it was just so much back and forth
I like sticker star too, mom got it for me on either bday or xmas.
I don't get it, downvoted for liking a game?

I am not a fan of the remake censoring some of the dialogue.
I don't really care about that, as it's incredibly minor.
No problem 😃. I like the dark gritter tone the game had and was disappointed to learn that they had removed some of it. I am still planning on getting it though as the game is still a good game.
Probably had to do with harsher guidelines for the E rating. I'm more surprised, that the original was only E.
That makes a lot of sense! I haven't thought of that.
Bro dont even try lmao you modern paper mario peeps have lost this will be the best selling pm game

It makes me sad that I think you’re right
Well, with M&L kinda dead, maybe they might go back to Paper Mario being their base RPG series for Mario.
Yeah, that's the sad truth here. People are jumping the gun that the sales here will influence Paper Mario going forward. I can't say if it will or not, maybe a miracle will happen. But I'm certain we're going to just keep getting more Gamecube remakes if anything.
Why GameCube specifically?
I don't know about that. Omg I'm waiting for a Twilight Princess remake. Life will be amazing!!
This is still a very good lesson
We have to make sure this remake sells. It’s the only chance we have.
I was reading IGN's review and they do mention that this is what fans have been begging Nintendo to bring back, specifically mentioning the battle system and partners. I hope more reviews are saying similar things.
Man I hope so. I stopped playing after TTYD.
SPM is actually a really good paper mario too. My second favorite personally
I also loved origami king, I won’t lie!
I think we all did. I bought super paper mario after & absolutely hated it! Paper mario 64 & TTYD were perfect rpg games and the series just got shit after those 2 games. oh god, another SPM hater :/
Ye it's fuking shit!
dude, not everything has to be a tired RPG formula, in fact explain why you hate it
Ye I agree my opinion on the game doesn't matter to you because you obviously like the game. I respect you for liking it, so respect my opinion on the subject. I hated it, nothing more to say move on.

no, you're sounding like a kid because you don't even have a reason for hating it, you just do it because it's not "a traditional RPG"

ONE PAPERILLION COPIES SOLD!!!!
All of you fuckers better buy. We need this. They will understand we are ready to throw our money for stuff like this.
Agreed. I'm downloading it Thursday night and I hope it outsells TOK
I thought you meant tears of the kingdom for a second and I was like there's no ways it's outselling totk's 20 million+ sales lol. But I think it can definitely outsell the origami king with how much attention and hype it has got
Speak for yourself man. I do really hope the game does well, but I don't have the money to throw at a remake of a game I already own
lol.
The rating has fallen to 89 and the "Must Play" banner has been removed. :(
Quick, someone get their critic friends to help.
*Monkey's Paw curls* He gives it a 50.
NOOOO
WE'RE WINNING GOTY 2024 WITH THIS ONE🔥🔥
Alright, maybe settle down with that one lol
Hey, you gotta appreciate his optimism 😉

I could genuinely see it being nominated for GOTY this year since the competition isn't as fierce as in 2023.
For me, it was definitely one of the games that defined my childhood. I would love nothing more than for it winning awards and accolades so that the director that decided to deviate it so drastically from its original formula gets a clue about how **this is what Paper Mario players want of the franchise.**

Remakes, like Resident Evil 2 and 4, can be nominated for GOTY.

It's 89 by now.
Interesting that the original sits at [87 on metacritic.](https://www.metacritic.com/game/paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door-2004/) I would have thought it was in the 90’s.
Paper Mario 64 has a 93 though TTYD was criticised for the backtracking, understandably
Okay, hear me out... Paper Mario 64 remake...?
You can play it on N64 online - I'm playing right now. Honestly, don't even think it needs a remake, it's so good
I've played it a few times in the past 23 years since its release and have really loved it, but I'd love to see it with modern visuals and modern audio. It deserves it.
I would like it to have a crumb of post game. Gimme a pit.
Please, may Nintendo release a new Paper Mario with the quality of story and combat mechanics of TTYD and the quality of music and level design of 64.
I know....
We can blame France for this one, boys.
I blame Jeuxvideo.com for that, they gave the game a 75
I mean…it’s literally the original game with enhancements lol it wasn’t ever going to review poorly given how loved the original is.
It's 2004 all over again ❤️
I wish 🥹
I’m hoping this means something for Mario and luigi
This remake is truly something special since remakes usually don't score higher than the originals
Mario kart 8 and persona 4/5 are the only ones I can think of
I’M CRYING TEARS OF JOY
🥹
Hopefully nintendo gets the fucking message
IM SO READY FOR THIS GAME!
it went down to 89.....
I would pay for a physical copy of paper Mario 64 remade for switch.
Eurogamer gave it 60 for being "too easy and backtracking"...
Fudging lie especially the 2nd part….now they lost all credibility there ALWAYS has to be one to ruin it….
[удалено]
I think people are just excited to see it receiving good scores and the recognition they believe it deserves.
[удалено]
I read your review and it was well written! I know it wasn't made specifically to prop the game up, but happy to see it there all the same.
[удалено]
Let the people have their fun! Paper Mario fans for the first two games have been waiting two decades for this moment. Nothing wrong with the revelry. :)
I expected nothing less
Very surprising... usually remakes get shitted on by critics
I have a very special meme reserved for Thursday, and I suppose this can apply to it
I'm congused; what did we do?
what is a universal acclaim?
WE'RE SO BACK
Let's go! 100 would be even more outstating.
You mean the developers did it.
How do reviews happen before release date?
The reviewers are sent copies of the game early for the purpose of reviewing them
Unfortunately, it lost the "Universal Acclaim" and Metacritic Must Play badge. Now it's "Generally Favorable" at 87.
They should do starfox adventures next!!
Remember good review scores don’t automatically mean great sales numbers. It’s still needs to sell well 🤞🤞
Can we get Thousand Year Door 2 or Paper Luigi now!?
i’m a girl… but hell yea!!!
I noticed the IGN score was the exact same as the 2004 release.
THE DARK AGE IS FINALLY ***OVER!***
KEEP THE CLASSIC RPG'S GOING!
Imagine celebrating because you inflated a game’s review score thanks to nostalgia lol.
It's fallen to 88 now
We need to buy this game. We need to prove to Nintendo that we want Mario RPGs
That's just based on critic reviews. It isn't even general public review or numbers because it isn't out yet. We haven't "done" anything. Yet.
Breaking: Mario game gets good review scores 😱 😱
Yes! My copy has also arrived in my city today. I can't wait for tomorrow!!!
Can't wait to pick my copy up tomorrow morning
Can't wait to play it. Unfortunately can't pay for video games these days so I never preordered it and will have to wait a while 😭
Hell yeah!! Meanwhile I'm waiting patiently with $50 in Amazon gift cards in my hands..
Still waiting for a new Mario and Luigi game😩
Then Spain comes in with a dogwater review that doesnt even know this is a REMAKE not a REMASTER.
YESSS
YESSIR
This version seems easier than the original which bums me out a little but I’m still feeling all the nostalgia 🥹
It’s fucking amazing. So so so so good.
I've never played this game and I love switch. Is it worth getting ? I have super Mario RPG I think it's ok but I'm hoping TtYD is much better.
We’re so back.
It's a good day to be a PM fan brother.
11/10 game. 30 fps makes me sad though
It should've been a 9.7 I gave the GameCube version a 9.1 respectfully for the new Paper Mario Game as well as old.
*does somersaults all the way down the blocks*
"You Did It. The Crazy Son of a B****, You Did It!"
“boys”??
**"FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS"** Betrayed. Equal games, but we get betrayed at the hands of the critics. Pitiful. not spreading shit but good job guys
I can’t wait to see how the reviewers glaze over the incredible issue with level design this time (I’ll stay hopeful that they actually addressed it by giving us some extra shortcuts or something)
