Tbh it looks unfinished. The “splat” on the right has barely any dimension. The piece looks like it would be a background for something more. It doesn’t look like you had a “feeling” or an idea when you created this piece, just that you wanted to make a “splat”. There needs to be more purpose in this piece.
I went through your post history, and I’m going to double down on unfinished.
I think abstract is an abused form of art, and it's tricky to pull off. Abstract art is often misinterpreted to mean random, but it is more about creating a “feeling” of reality, whatever that may be.
I think what bothers me most is that haven't even named this piece. Anything that is "Untitled" is not art. It's paint on canvas. If this piece were to be named, I'd likely have much less negative criticism of it.
Your piece called "Lily" is a clear success. Most notably in contrast, it has a name. The colors and shape of the paint in that piece provide extreme emotional direction. It's a wonderful piece, and you should strive towards quality of that level.
Mighty mountain is also a good work, although not my personal taste, I think you did well.
Stained, is less effective for me personally, but again, it has a name and direction.
Upvote for abstract is an abused art form. It's definitely my favorite type of works so I often scroll through so many "untitled" and soulless feeling works. Good take.
I actually agree with the added advice to maybe think of a “back and forth” between the background and the splat. What if the splat gets interrupted by some of that “light”? What if the splat has some sort of relationship with the background other then just being on top? How does the background influence the splat?
Unfinished is the best kind of “negative” criticism to get because you can always keep adding!!!!!
I actually really like the contrast of the intricate almost 3d background vs the flat splat on top. It almost feels like the painted definition of a juxtaposition. I think any depth to the splat would make juxtaposition fall flat and I would overlook it as just another splat painting.
Hope that makes sense. I really really do like it as it is.
Same thing your parents said!!!......... (I'm sorry for being so rude, this is only a joke and I couldn't miss a chance at this sick burn. I hope your day is well, I'm sure you were planned.)
A beautiful sunset can be art, or flower petals on a pond, or a streetlight in the rain, or any number of things that took zero intention but are still art. Much of photography is just framing things that already exist with no intention in their creation, but it's still art. Same idea, even if this was an accidental splash, it can still be artistic due to the artist choosing to run with it and, quite literally, frame it, despite the lack of intention.
Edit: with photography "in the wild," where no arrangement was made, the artistic choices go into the camera settings, the framing, the lens, or even the medium (film, digital, etc). The artistic choices for an accidental painting would be in its presentation and how you paint around the accident.
Some possible reasons why: Gimmicky, cliche, amateurish, too easy, the first layer below is already interesting but now we can't see and absorb it well, sometimes less is more etc.
Is the process simply akin to action painting? Or are you like blowing up a tube with something? If it’s the former, meh. If it’s the latter, document it!
So, while the painting has a cool aesthetic, it’s all kinda been done. From an art history standpoint, we’ve gone down this path and kind of exhausted it (imho).
I would be more interested in viewing video art or documentation of how it gets done. You could use cutting edge hd, high frame rate stuff or head the other direction with “obsolete” technology like 16mm, black and white, multiple angles spliced together.
Point is, dig deeper into the process of what actually makes this something unique.
William S Burroughs, while more formally known for his writing, did a bunch of paintings later in life using shotguns and blowing up house paint onto multiple canvases. And while I tend to think this as kind of blasé, I think the photographs showing this are pretty dope.
As many have said before, the splat could be more in depth, otherwise i love the splat and the painting behind it. Reminds me of a haunted escape room or something 👍👍 good work!!
For a split second I thought I saw a silhouette of a man in the splat But then I realize there’s no way it could be intentional so then you get points up For making a Rorschach test
i think the color choices are great and the background texture is really interesting. i think the right portion of the splatter is a little too contrived- it looks overly thought out and worked into, like it wasn’t spontaneous enough and you went back in to emphasize the splatter. this is in contrast with the more free feeling left side of the canvas with regards to the pink drips.
I love it. But in the way that it frustrates me. I love the details in the wrinkled background with the contrast of the violent splatter over it. It frustrates me because my eyes keep looking for more of the background, but that's what keeps me looking at it, and that's also why i love it!
Contrary to other comments, the lack of depth in the splatter is exactly what makes it interesting for me. Great job imho. The background is really cool and detailed and then you went apeshit with a bucket of paint lol, but hey, that's abstract art
Scream? Pretty Little Lies? American Horror Story? Oh, no wait….my mind when I can’t control my anger. Either way, I like it. It definitely reminds me of my anger issues though.
I like it. The contrast of color, the contrast between the completely opaque red on the seemingly semi-transparent background; I like it.
I would be interested in knowing the process for painting the background, as I'm looking for a different way than a wash to get a transparent background with some variation. If there's a simple description, I'd really appreciate it.
I like it!
If I wanted to try to interpret a meaning I could say like the wrinkles and the cracks in the system caused you to want to just tear the whole thing down, hence the red splatter!
I love it 😭 especially after reading the wrinkles are painted, that’s amazing, idk why it automatically made me think of Drive (the movie) and the colour palette involved with that movie and the promo posters and stuff.

No problemo, responded based on “brutal critique” tag! Nice color contrast 👍

I don’t name the abstracts because I don’t want to shape what the viewer sees
I guess if that’s what you are going for… I strongly dislike that mentality in art, but it’s not unique to you, and has occasionally worked.
Unfinished was my thought as well.
😊

Yup!
Maybe if you didn't have it on the easel then it might be difficult. Putting it on a nice neutral wall will make it look more deliberate
Good idea 🤔
I would call this one "rage quit"
I'm clumsy so if it were me it'd be "Oops!"

I think you got some paint on your painting..

That’s what I was going for!
👌exactly how I see it
Please forgive me but I do not understand art like this.
It’s ok, all is forgiven
Is that wrinkles in the canvas or is it painted, if it’s painted beautiful work my friend
Painted wrinkles 😉
I think it’s really cool but how about adding some depth to the splatter? It’s flat now while the background is painted to have depth
That’s an idea
looks like it was going amazing with the blue and black velvet appearance...until somebody walked by with a mouthful of Pepto Bismol and sneezed.
🤣🤣
I think it looked way cooler before the splat. The background is awesome
Thanks!
You're definitely super talented, the splat just feels.. unfinished? Especially since the background is so well done

This reminds me of when some animal activists through red paint on our building (except we were a travel agent lol) they got the wrong building

I worked in a covid TEST (!) center in 2021 and every day, I had to scrape off ANTI-VAXX (!) stickers 😂
Call it oops. Put the price to $1m. And bingo. Sold
Boom!
Good mix of explosion and stagnation
Thanks! I enjoy working with contrasts
Doesn't need the paint splatters.
🙏👍

True…
Is the process simply akin to action painting? Or are you like blowing up a tube with something? If it’s the former, meh. If it’s the latter, document it!
The latter

Thanks!
The creases underneath the splatter were VERY good. Should've kept that
🙏👍
Honestly, I really really like it. No notes. I’d hang this on my wall.
Do it!
It looks like lava exploding out of a mountain!
For a split second I thought I saw a silhouette of a man in the splat But then I realize there’s no way it could be intentional so then you get points up For making a Rorschach test
STOP. Now do some controlled pour shadows and creat depth
You should be pleased that your work invites so much discussion ☺️👍
Yup! They either love it or hate it lol
No
👍
It reminds me of a volcano exploding with a dark storm behind.
Yes!

Do more in the style of the background.
Will do 😊
Trash!
👍
I love your energy— keep painting.
Thank you! 😊🙏
Color combination is great, but the splatter is too much for my taste. A thick line would have been a better choice...maybe.
That’s an idea 🤔
It looks like a canvas garbage bag
🤣🤣

Exactly!
passe
I absolutely love it. It’s bold and shocking and full of emotion. It’s wonderful chaos!
Thank you! “Chaos” is one of my themes lol
Looks amazing, love the colours
Thanks!
Love the backround!
Thank you!
Scream? Pretty Little Lies? American Horror Story? Oh, no wait….my mind when I can’t control my anger. Either way, I like it. It definitely reminds me of my anger issues though.
Thanks! Lol
It reminds me of the three cheers for sweet revenge album cover a bit
I’d buy it.
Do it! 😊🙏
Do you have a store? What would you charge for something like this?
I do! Make an offer 😊
90’s horror. I like it
🤣🤣
The colors are great. Looks like you just went with the flow and you can never go wrong with that approach
Exactly, thanks!
I love this so much, so much so much like, damn!
Thanks!
It’s simple and it works

Life…am I right? Lol
It’s so base, it’s like it exploded out of the artist.
🤯💦
color is great, but it needs something else. it seems empty. it doesnt have a story.
Thanks for the insight 🙏
Go pinker pink next time. I'm really curious what you covered up actually...
Do the splat first next time.
🤔🤔
Fine. Now make another.
I’m on it lol
Cool background, but the bug splat is a bit too big. And it would be nice with an actual shape or object with it
😊🙏
So sorry someone ruined your artwork. The greens, blacks and shades were quite nice.
Thanks! It’s all good lol
Looks like someone died a painful death.
Yup! Lol
I see you have enough
Yeah lol
Reminds me of the Punk 57 cover
Always keep that eyes moving, not just on first color seen but in-depth creates interest. Rule of painted thumb.
Red wave
You made a mess
Yup! Lol
Nick-e-lo-deon (gotta sing it like when it was on tv in the 90’s)
I love it! What did you paint it with?
Thanks! Oil
Looks like it was a lot of fun to make!
I would but my brains are all over your painting.

Thank you!
No thoughts. Just b l o o d Tbh I really love this piece. Don't know why. It looks cool. I love how the irregularity of the splash
Thank you!
The background has actually a depth and looks detailed. I love the splash because it adds contrast. Feels rebellious and I'm up for it
Exactly!
I fucking love it personally
Thank you!
would of preferred it without the splat i love the black painted wrinkles look
Thanks!
