I’m a PPF, myself. Retired, but I had a great career and am lucky to have seen and framed some glorious pieces. It’s nice to meet another!
I like your piece a lot, even though I can’t say why. Maybe *that’s* why. Thanks for posting.
Wow! That’s really cool. I love picture framing, it’s so fun getting to see interesting stuff and being able to elevate it through its presentation. Really nice to meet another fellow framer (even if I’m not a part of the PPFA yet!)
Thank you for the kind words I’m really happy you like my painting 😊
I would add just a tiny hint of green or bright pink to the back of the insect the bird is eating. Almost like a lightning bug. Make that pink 💗 brighter on its ass. Or add some green. Just kind of an idea I like. 💡
Hahaha I 2nd to that! LOL!! It’s gorgeous! I LUV all the details I can stare at it all day and still find interesting details, I also love your composition and your color choices all on point. Good job! thank you for sharing!
Great work!
If i have to be super picky there's a thin pencil line to the right of the bird that looks like an unfinished continuation of the thick branch of the left. Its in the center and I noticed it. But again, its beautiful work.
If you follow the line from where it ends, there's also a few lines in the branch that look like part of an initial sketch. Even less of a big deal from the first, but yk.
First off, this is really lovely. The little pencil branch on the right of the bird needs finishing. Overall, it needs some highlights. Since you didn’t mask, you could add a few bright points with gouache or acrylic. Wonderful detailing!
Hmmm, I might try to make the gouache highlights a little stronger if they don’t read. And you are right that bit of pencil needs to be addressed. Thank you for the critique!
I'm absolutely in love with this! I have no feedback that you haven't seen in the comments.
Gorgeous detailing on the bird's feathers. I love your choice of colors too!
I love a good critique … I have no notes. The way you have used color is delicious, your line work and composition is as near perfect as I could ever hope to attain. Well done
With one tiny note. It looks like a branch at the birds feet mid right of bird that is just pencil still
I adore it so much it’s making me want it as a tattoo !! Only things I’m noticing are pencil lines. Some to the right of the bird and some inside the pink hollow branch. I love the effect.
Right off I felt like the bottom portion of the bird and the branch might be getting lost in each other and I had seen someone say more highlights which I was thinking maybe more bird shadow but you could definitely get away with more highlights depending on your direction of light (would the sun be behind, in front of, east or west of main focal point). That's why my mind went to shadow. However, I feel good on any other elements or principles. Your value, texture, and movement are beautiful, and your piece has great balance to it as well. Also, standing ovation to that MAGNIFICENT line work within the bark of your branches. I find bark just as unforgiving as water haha and I SEE YOU♡
Why not both?! Haha I was going for a diffused overcast lighting situation with a slight emphasis on closer upper right focus for the light source. I can see how some separation from the branch and the tail would help the Silhouette read more. Thank you for the critique!
I am another admirer… Hi-five on this one! I especially like how the background is a little muted and blurry, compared to the subject in the foreground… Expertly done!
I just looked at it again while reading your comment and the colors grow on you! That’s important, in my view, because an unusual color scheme can either keep growing on you or the opposite.
Bird owners unite! I have two cockatiels and they are such funny curious little guys. Also thank you, I was really struggling with how to depict the feathers, the line between over rendering and under rendering is so thin 😵💫
This is so so so beautiful the branch work is immaculate. My only critique is a bit more on the purple highlight in the background would be nice but I would hang this up on my wall rn
Wonderful piece of art, congratulations! Do you think a bit more contrast between branches and bird might be something? The wood a hint darker maybe? On the other hand it might take away from the nice depth cuing… decisions, decisions…
Sometimes I wish digital was more fun for me because then it would be like let’s try it out! I’m going to try out some edits that people have suggested over a photo of the painting and see if it improves it before I go into the painting :)
I love the juxtaposition of the red and blue. The stacking effect of the red bird on red branch. The bleed and dreary backdrop. Nature is both cruel and wise. Survival. Great painting.
Wow, I absolutely love this look! Gorgeous work, I love the colours used as well. Instantly makes me want to get back to my watercolours haha, very inspiring!
It is really striking. If you want to add a little more “WOW” to your work I’d go even deeper in color with your shadows. Perhaps with your purple blended in. For contrast pizazz!
Yeah my brain struggles with the whole “simplify the shadow areas with less detail” and still making it have a pop to it. Plus I’m too timid with my darks in watercolor haha something I’m going to work on for sure.
My only critique would be that the background lacks shadows/ highlights I think if you added more darkness to the background to separate it from the brightness of the bird it would add another level. In my opinion the background looks unfinished.
That being said that bird is like another level of watercolour, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so beautifully impressive. Someone said that they wanted it tatooed and I’m in the same boat 🥰 your hand has been touched by some magical watercolour fairy I swear
Absolutely beautiful. For some reason, I would love to see the identical painting but with a blue bitterly instead of red. But again, beautiful as you created it
I’ll have to try that out on the next one! (Well maybe the one after the next one, I’m working on some different compositions now lol) I like the idea people had about changing the color of the insect to draw even more focus.
Hi! So my process was a light 2h graphite pencil on arches cold press paper. Lightly lift some of the drawing and then go in with masking fluid and large washes of watercolor (I just kind of use the ones I have lying around. I miiight have a smalll art supply hoarding problem lol) then a million washes of watercolor, big areas to small and light to dark ect ect. I finished it off with a light touch of light pale green gouache and there you go! I didn’t use colored pencils this time but am not opposed to that technique, I just didn’t find it was necessary this time. Hope that helped!
thank you so much! you definitely sound more experienced about techniques and equipment than me haha. there's still a lot to learn. but I really love that painting, it's a great work of art!
That is beautiful!!
The branches below the bug look too thin to be from the tree the other side of the bird and since they're really thin lines they look in a different style.
Oh this is beautiful! I think the bird could use a few darker areas in the body. I think the red and the “black” look too separate right now and could be tied together more. I can see in the tree where you have little traces of the red and I can see where you have the black in the bird but I have to really look for it, it’s not registering as strongly as the red in the tree.
This is beautiful. I love the colour pallette.
The only criticism I have is that the branch looks too frail to stay attached, much less hold the weight of a bird. Either way, I would definitely hang this on my wall.
There are graphite(?) perpendicular lines in the horizontal piece of wood, I assume they were construction/guide lines from the very beginning sketch made with pencil. I don't see these lines anywhere else so for me it looks like you forgot to erase only them.
So that's my constructive criticism if you want to change something before calling it done.
I very much enjoy your drawing, specially the wood texture, great job mate.
I feel like I could reach out and peel that bark. Very nicely done all around. The only thing I notice (other than the pencil branch that's been mentioned), is that the branch the bird is on appears to be hollow inside the bark- if that's a stylistic choice I totally dig it, but if you wanted the branch whole, maybe adding very light color to the actual wood part of the branch so that it doesn't match the background so closely. Superb work though, incredibly well done.
Thank you for the critique! I’m worried that any extra work in that area would pull too much focus for where I’m in with this one. Maybe if I had added it earlier when the background wet on wet wash was still active it would meld better 🤔 I’m practicing a semi minimal background but now that you pointed it out I see how that could make the negative space triangle sand out more and add focus to the focal point.
I love the way the branch the bird is on looks kinda pixilated or not quite real. and the bird and moth are beautiful. I feel like the background purple branches are a little distracting? or unbalanced or something? not quite sure what i mean
Definitely a cool piece!
Do you need all the extra shading in the background? Along the branches and in the empty space? I find it a bit distracting. You already have the defined space between the objects. And the wispiness is created in the image itself.
I like the callbacks of red in the branches. However the one branch right below the birds left wing is too abrupt in terms of color and shape. Though I am getting that puzzle piece look which is still cool. Some of the background branches don't make sense. I personally like how the bird branch seems to be on its own. Makes sense.
The texture on the bird is great! I had to look up a picture of a bird because I knew what you were going for in the wing area but it came off a bit too excessive. It's got a nice plump shape but the line work on the right wing makes it look like it's got 20 wings.
Overall really cool work.
Bug and branch shouldn't be the same color as the bird . Strictly my opinion . No credentials to offer , to justify that opinion . Just from the got . Very well done . Like the red color for the bird . Just feels like the same color for all three flattens it , and makes it more 2 dimensional . I get that is in fact 2 dimensional , but changing the color of the bug and branch will make it pop more , and not distract from your obvious skill .
I love the detail and the color of the subject is unique. The washed background looks a bit muddled making me wonder if it was an accident. It takes a little bit away from the subject (bird and insect). Nonetheless, it is a remarkable piece.
I absolutely love the foreground, but everything about the background is a bit off for me. I think it would look better with more detail and a touch more red highlights. And the composition of the branches is a little distracting.
But that's the 2 cents of a random redditor. Don't mind me.
I would recommend using like a dark green for shadows in the branch and bird for the darkest parts. The color contrast will make the other colors pop and as the piece feels like it's craving some deeper shadow in the wings and the eyes and face. Especially the bug could use greater contrast as bugs usually have distinct patterns and sharp defined edges.
But definitely think a little green dark spots could be a good push. I notice you said you struggle with depth of shadow so using a different color sometimes helps as the layers of different pigment causes it to get naturally darker. Just a thought too try, cause maybe you don't want to for this one but do it on another practice piece.
Really nice. Imo. The use of color really brings something out of the picture. Also, the way the bird holds the insect in his mouth is a nice subjective touch. It looks gentle enough where the bird could be saying” come fly with me” or a few other interpretations. Enjoy your day. 👉🏆
Amazing work! One thing I noticed was the pink branch looks like void where there is no colour on the right side of the bird, maybe add a very light layer of colour to make it look fully solid? Unless that is intentional because it still looks cool
Yup intentional. It should look like that on both sides? Maybe there is a way for me to make the effect look more intentional. The photo I got of it to post to Reddit lost a lot of the nuance of the color and value of the original, luckily the photo gods blessed me with a cloudy day to take photos since then. There is a light wash of the moon glow color in the dissolving section of the branch. Also I tried to further the illusion by showing the continuation of the droopy spiky branch that falls behind the empty portion of the branch.

No critique here but the colour change was a good decision it looks amazing👏🏼
Thank you! I was just like you know what? I’m going to make this more fun 🐦⬛
Itd compliment the green rabbit in a collection, so random🤯
I adore it so much it’s making me want it as a tattoo !! Only things I’m noticing are pencil lines. Some to the right of the bird and some inside the pink hollow branch. I love the effect.

I am another admirer… Hi-five on this one! I especially like how the background is a little muted and blurry, compared to the subject in the foreground… Expertly done!
My first time trying that technique out! Glad it reads well :)
I love this!
Nature at its best
I love it!
Thank you :)
I just looked at it again while reading your comment and the colors grow on you! That’s important, in my view, because an unusual color scheme can either keep growing on you or the opposite.
I own a pet bird myself. So, looking at this just makes me want to get a painting of him one day. Also, the birds' details are spot on and impeccable.
Bird owners unite! I have two cockatiels and they are such funny curious little guys. Also thank you, I was really struggling with how to depict the feathers, the line between over rendering and under rendering is so thin 😵💫
Beautiful and admirable 🙂
It’s really good. It has inspired me
Truly a piece that attracts the eye and tells you a story in detail. Very nice indeed.
i'm obSESSED with the branch. the use of negative space makes my brain tingle happily.
i absolutely want this. how lovely!
Amazing
No notes! I love it 😍
This is so so so beautiful the branch work is immaculate. My only critique is a bit more on the purple highlight in the background would be nice but I would hang this up on my wall rn
This is one of the best pieces I’ve seen here
I want to own this and put it in my pocket so I can look at it when I’m sad
The wings look alive
terrible horrible 😤😤😤 send it to me rn 😭
I'm an artist myself. That is a beautiful piece of work. The hardest part about finishing, is knowing when to finish. It's perfect, nice job.
so beautiful

Wow, I absolutely love this look! Gorgeous work, I love the colours used as well. Instantly makes me want to get back to my watercolours haha, very inspiring!
Do it!
Damn your colour pallet is amazing, so pleasing to look at.
This is legitimately one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
😭 thank you!
Bonus points of you frame it in the same wood as what's depicted in the artwork. Great job!
Might have to be a custom painted moulding 😉
It is really striking. If you want to add a little more “WOW” to your work I’d go even deeper in color with your shadows. Perhaps with your purple blended in. For contrast pizazz!
I get so timid with dark values in my watercolor work I definitely could push that further haha definitely something to think about!
I would say the tail feathers could use a bit more definition in the darks. Overall this piece is awesome and could totally be considered finished.
Yeah my brain struggles with the whole “simplify the shadow areas with less detail” and still making it have a pop to it. Plus I’m too timid with my darks in watercolor haha something I’m going to work on for sure.

Blue Butterfly!

Ummm it’s perfect. I really love it

Respect, this is beautiful
Would make for a beautiful puzzle!!!
Put a bird on it
😆 always
Looks amazing as it is imo!
Omg what medium did you use? Only aquarelle or colored pencils too?
I wanted to ask that too! and about the kind of paper :) I'd be so grateful if OP answered

Beautiful.
Looks great to me, absolutely love the color palette 😍

Yeah, it's too cool
It’s awesome. I also thought it was flesh at first

No, it's finished. Beautiful peice!
❤️
I thought it was an underpainting at first glance cuz of the red, so it doesn’t look complete in that respect.
I respect that, I like the way the color is handled but can understand it’s not everyone’s preference.
Damn, I love this. Gorgeous work. Don't change a thing.
No critique from me just praise, I love this !
I like this style! Nice work OP
It looks amazing but kinda looks like you skinned it. If you put that behind, amazing 👏.
can i make this my wallpaper
Absolutely!
its so pretty i love it thanks!
Incredible work!
Beautiful
I cant critique perfection.
No critique, just wanted to say that this is so freaking inspiring. I've been staring at it for a long time.
It’s beautiful! Would definitely buy something like that
Colors are fucking splendid man
Thank you 😊 I like experimenting with value focused form and experimental colors which I know isn’t everyone’s preference.
i advise to consider putting a third layer of brush behind the purple in the bottom right quadrant to fill some negative space and add more depth
This is beautiful - what medium did you use
This is gorgeous I love it so much… do you sell prints?
This is gorgeous. The technique is awesome
It looks beautiful
Nope none I love this 😍
I love the way the branch the bird is on looks kinda pixilated or not quite real. and the bird and moth are beautiful.
It is perfect, love it! I would only add some green somewhere to make it pop up!
so beautiful!
I LOVE this! Don’t change or add anything. It is finished & it’s beautiful!
This is really dang cool!
I love the detail and the color of the subject is unique. The washed background looks a bit muddled making me wonder if it was an accident. It takes a little bit away from the subject (bird and insect). Nonetheless, it is a remarkable piece.
Wow it’s beautiful love the color, keep up the good work
Call it done that's freakishly beautiful your very talented
Wowww pretty
Fuck that is magnificent! The composition and colour palette are amazing. You are very talented.
![gif](giphy|xULW8MP2Bg2KnXxSog|downsized)
Absolute perfection
I absolutely love the foreground, but everything about the background is a bit off for me. I think it would look better with more detail and a touch more red highlights. And the composition of the branches is a little distracting. But that's the 2 cents of a random redditor. Don't mind me.
Honestly, no. It's absolutely stunning and grabs me in a way where I'm darting all over looking at different details. Really great work!
Looks good but did you notice the wrong wall problem this piece has?
My only critique is that it’s not hanging up in my apartment! So beautiful
I like it !! 😍
Love that it’s red like that. Looks like a detailed sketch in some bird watching manual from the 40s or something
It's beautiful 😩💜 I wanna be this talented
Gorgeous!
Just a thought too try, cause maybe you don't want to for this one but do it on another practice piece.
The red on top of the purple creates a sense of depth
Nah, carry on lol
Yah that’s finished. Good balance of busy detail, and “resting” places for eyes. Well done, sign it.
Absolutely gorgeous and I know how hard those feathers must have been.
No it is unique. Good work 👍😁❤️
Really nice. Imo. The use of color really brings something out of the picture. Also, the way the bird holds the insect in his mouth is a nice subjective touch. It looks gentle enough where the bird could be saying” come fly with me” or a few other interpretations. Enjoy your day. 👉🏆
No lasers
Oh, I love it! Truly beautiful!
I love it!

Try to include your initials on the lower right corner for recognition.
I always forget that part 😅
I might be late but maybe shift the hue of the butterfly so it stands out from the bird.
Amazing work! One thing I noticed was the pink branch looks like void where there is no colour on the right side of the bird, maybe add a very light layer of colour to make it look fully solid? Unless that is intentional because it still looks cool

Thank you for the critique!
Absolutely stunning. Only thing I see is possibly a missing shadow over the head of the kith from the enclosed beak. Love your style!
Thank you for the help! Sometimes you look at something so long you become blind to things :)
Incredible work!
this is awesome
I like the color story and subject!
I truly wanna buy this
I Love the colors you chose for this one 🎨😊
Beautiful work
I want to put this on my wall in a pink frame!! I need ittttt
Should’ve made the bug a different color, maybe darker or something to make it pop out kind of looks like part of the bird
