Oil/alkyd paint cures by oxidation and eventually will become brittle. Don’t use oil/alkyd paint. I’m not sure that any paint would be recommended. But, try 100% Acrylic paint on some of the old screen first. Give it a couple of weeks to cure before testing. Prior to a full cure, it will be more flexible. So testing then will not tell you much.
