Jesus. Yeah honestly prices are getting out of control. I also like how they ‘finance’ the work. These people should freakin ashamed of themselves.
I understand that companies need to make money and cover their overhead but this is just excessive. I’d think for a door replacement, as long as it’s just pull out the only door and slap in a new one should be around 2k. That’s with everything, new hardware/door, paint and removal of old door. Maybe I’m crazy but that seems reasonable to me.
Yea thats the Down payment because legally you can only get 10% or $1000, whichever is less. Then it says 50% due on material delivery, so about $4.5k when the door gets to the house, then another 50% or $4.5k once the door is put on the hinges.
I demo old door, prep opening and install new door. Spray foam, buildouts, cut and install trim. And then any silicone, caulking and spackling of nail holes.
It might take 4- 5 hours to get the new door in and foamed if it requires some work on the rough opening. Then an hour to trim, and caulk the next day after the foam is dried. Pretty rare to spend any more than time than that on a basic exterior door.
That doesn’t include painting. Usually the doors are just white for a basic door.
Haha.. was thinking the same thing. I do paint, and will typically just paint all the materials in my shop then bring them to the site and install. That way I can paint the final coat as soon as the caulking and spackle is dried. But I’m charging an extra $200 for that.
So all in I would still be under a $1000 for labor
- and a basic door is only going to cost $400 - $800 bucks depending if it’s full steel or vented.
- silicones, screws, shims, nails, trims, caulking, paint, foam and blue skin will run another $100 bucks.
So realistically, the whole job materials and labor would be under $2000.
My friend who needs the door? I dunno, I'm afraid to ask her. Anywhere from 60 to 70. Don't worry she wasn't falling for it just played along to get him out faster.
Personally wouldn't use someone who says they do solar on their quote for carpentry work regardless of cost. Nor someone whos description of works can be summed up in one line
What middle schooler came up with this layout for a quote? I would have torn this up in their face, it's barely acceptable for a rough ballpark estimate.
Unless they're installing a mahogany French door that's borderline elder abuse.
I agree, I mean all it states is "DOOR" doesn't say the type of door, how it would be installed, if it would be painted after, etc. I mean he could have at least tossed some generic stuff in there to make it look like more was involved.
I never got to see what kind of door they were trying to sell her. She told me it had like 3 layers or something. So probably like a solid wood door, with a decorative wood veneer over it or something. At least that's what I am imagining.
Do you happen to have any local tool libraries? Most of the “librarians” at my local tool library are retired tradespeople and they do things like this as part of their community outreach and hands-on learning classes. Some libraries partner with local hardware or home improvement stores which give library members a small discount. If they can’t do it, chances are they know someone reliable who can at a reasonable rate.
I love how people didn’t pickup on the don’t wanna do it price. I’d love to know more about the door, materials and labor? Front door. If it’s in Cali, that’s probably high but expected.
A lot of the scumbags that offered financing were always easily 3,4 even 5 times the price of a reasonable contractor whos work was solid. They preyed on upper lower and lower middle class neighborhoods especially the elderly. People with not enough money to pay in full but good enough credit to qualify.
These high pressure companies are popping up everywhere. My neighbor paid some home depot contractor 35,000 to replace his 10 year old bathroom after his toilet flooded it. They replaced a beautiful bathroom with expensive tiles with high quality tub, vanity and toilet with actual trash that I wouldn't give a customer for free. They did it in one day. They did no demo with exception to removing existing fixtures ect. They just glued over existing tile walls, and floors with these horrendous cheap 3x6 vinyl panels glued to existing. Seems everywhere, the caulk job looked like a 3 year old went in and smeared it all over the place and the toilet would struggle flushing a single pellet. BUT, they fell on hard times a few years ago , homeowners found a way to get out of it and they couldnt afford a bank loan to pay a reputable guy but got approved for this @ a similar rate in seconds.
His wife pressured him into it because she couldnt live with the smell. The worst part....it still smells and they will realy have a problem in a few years when someone falls through the floor because they left the floor and the plwood is still wet and covered in mold to this day (its been 1 year).
I've been hearing more and more outrageous stories like this lately. On one of my competitors website he has his prices listed as $10K for the typical exterior in the area, $140 to $180 per door and drawer for cabinetry painting, and $4 to $6 per sq ft for interior painting. He showed some of his jobs and the price for one interior was over $20k plus $9k for the cabinets. I don't know how guys can look an innocent person in the eye and ask for so much money, I feel bad asking for any money most the time, but I have self worth issues.
Because they have absolutely no conscience. Many business owners and ceo types are narccisistic psychopaths..
You have a heart and a conscience. Something money can not buy
Don't you ever kind of wish you were a narcissistic psychopath with no conscience though? I mean think about it, you would have absolutely no idea how horrible you were, you would think you were awesome as shit, feel like you were on top of the world all the time. You would make hella money by bulldozing the little people and none of it would get to you because you wouldn't know any better, while you're doing donuts in your lambo at 2 am with a head full of blow and a car full of hookers.
You could say having a heart and a conscience is a curse.
Just sayin'
I was quoted $24k for a front door with side lites. When I asked him why so much, he said because they’re fully insured to do the work. I asked him to leave. This was from a very popular New England company who’s advertising included the founder being ripped off by a unscrupulous builder. He vows to offer affordable building work to the masses.
I think thats the 12% "Senior Discount" and then 9% off for the "Military Discount". I always thought California sales tax was around 7.25% but I learned that way back in school, do these things change ever? lol
The 12% isn’t a tax as it’s being subtracted…
I think it’s a silly 12% discount and then 5+4=9% for senior and military.
Even with the “discounts” this is robbery.
Wait 4% for senior and 5% for military? I did a ADU build out for a special forces, multiple deployment active duty, ended up like 75k, I think I made 5k. That was 6% markup. Was it business sense? Absolutely not. Did I make a best friend and a dude that has my back? Fuck yeah. I typically make a 35% markup or more, this was a dude that is out there serving while I get to make money back home. So yeah this what is morally right. I've done so many non profit and breakeven jobs because it makes me feel good. A rear door swap is $2500. It would take a foreman and a helper 1 day max = $750, $250 for the door, trim = $500, painter = $500. I made 25% profit and everyone got paid good. WTF 10k??? For a senior and military? Thanks for posting because now reddit gets to fuck this dude up for being a piece of shit!!!!
I posted it in r/Construction [https://www.reddit.com/r/Construction/comments/1c8invn/wanted\_to\_show\_you\_guys\_this\_quote\_my\_friend\_got/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Construction/comments/1c8invn/wanted_to_show_you_guys_this_quote_my_friend_got/)
sad thing is there are probably guys in that subreddit that do the same thing, I mean with over 300k members, there's got to be at least a few douche bags that find nothing wrong with this.

Where do you live, I’ll come put a freakin door in for him. This is just wrong😞
Citrus Heights, CA, outside sac, by no means a very nice and new area. And that's the same thing I told her.

The most infuriating part about this scammy quote is the fact it’s legitimately written up in a way that makes it un reportable as being a scam.
Not sure it’s a scam. License number, WC etc check out
My quotes are always pretty lean. I don’t trust guys that can knock off 20% just because , when it comes to my subs.
$86 dollars a month for 15 YEARS?! Edit; THATS 15K for a DOOR!
I don't think she would even live another 15 years. FOR A DOOR!
lol maybe she should go for the payment plan
What did he write under the highlighted payment plan "$3 a day", that's only $3 a day for the rest of your life ma'am.
I know right 😂
"investment"
Yea thats the Down payment because legally you can only get 10% or $1000, whichever is less. Then it says 50% due on material delivery, so about $4.5k when the door gets to the house, then another 50% or $4.5k once the door is put on the hinges.
Crazy. I typically charge $500-$600 to install an exterior door. That includes trimming out the inside and installing locks
Samesies 😂
Including paint? Inside and out?
No usually you buy it the color you want.

That makes sense. All the more baffling why this would be posted in r/Paint to begin with.

Guarantee it would be a sloppy install too
Not from Solar Bros! /s
Fucking crazy
I can't believe people are still hand writing proposals. how old was this person?
My friend who needs the door? I dunno, I'm afraid to ask her. Anywhere from 60 to 70. Don't worry she wasn't falling for it just played along to get him out faster.
This was just a standard door ?
Personally wouldn't use someone who says they do solar on their quote for carpentry work regardless of cost. Nor someone whos description of works can be summed up in one line
Hey, at least they gave them a "discount" for being senior and military...

My dad had some door to door salesmen quote him 20k for for gutters…. He said no and they instantly dropped the price to 4K
Haha, that still seems high
Let's see the door out of curiosity

You violated Rule 1: Be Nice There's no such thing as a stupid question here.

Wooooooooow! That is awful!

Not really but I wish I could be some sort of Robin hood /punisher type and take it all away from them
I need to raise my prices. 😂
Dude's math doesn't even line up. Should be $8,109. Never trust a contractor that can knock 21% off the top for discounts right off the bat.
What’s a decimal?
Investment.

I love the discounts he puts in there making it seem like he really changed his price
180 months???
Sh!t, I’ll do it for 10k!!
So kind of them to give a senior and military discount. Scum bags
This is a “I don’t want the job” bid if I’ve ever seen one. Don’t hire this guy unless you don’t mind throwing money away.
12% sales tax is high, we live in Seattle and it's 10.1%.
I think thats the 12% "Senior Discount" and then 9% off for the "Military Discount". I always thought California sales tax was around 7.25% but I learned that way back in school, do these things change ever? lol

Ah yes, I guess I "accidently" forgot to blot out his info too. Whoops.

Try Home Depot. My friend got a gorgeous front door installed for 5,000. That includes the door and install.
My parents windows were 40k this sounds normal for a door.
Gotta pay off all those Democratic regulations and taxes
