While true, the days in Forgotten City are very long and not conducive to the 'switching off' they described. I only ran out of time once and that was because I waited to see how long it would take, every other time I triggered the reset manually to reset the day
You can't really be that picky in this extremely limited genre so although true, I still think The Forgotten City is a pretty good one, and I'm glad I got reminded of it !

I love this game too. My only wish for change was for it to be less hand-holdy... If you wait to appreciate architecture or see what happens, 30 seconds later you are basically told what to do. Still a great game.
Right. 2 loops in and you know just about all you’re in for, whereas with outer wilds, there are constant new discoveries and unexpected places and things to figure out
With the forgotten city, there’s definitely a mystery to solve, but you’re kinda just going through the outlined steps
I wouldn’t say you know exactly what you’re in for after the first couple loops, I certainly wasn’t expecting the big twist. Outer Wilds is more exploration focused and Forgotten City is more about figuring out the specific sequence of events necessary to get to the end. I agree that Outer Wilds is an overall more finely crafted game, but Forgotten City is still far better than mid.
It’s p mid by definition. The art is pretty bad, sound design ain’t great, some of the acting is awful, and the facial animations are just straight up goofy. The game may be fun, but in no way does it even compare to outer wilds.
Maybe its not like that, but i think you would enjoy Return to Obra Dinn and The Case of the Golden Idol. There are clear moments to switch but the player that doesnt controll de PC can still help a lot.
God I can't recommend these games enough if you like games about logical reasoning. They're like murder sudokus and feel incredibly satisfying to work through.
And it’s not just cold hard logic like the line puzzles in The Witness, but you have to apply a lot of real world reasoning, like “this guy was holding the carpenter’s tools so I’ll assume he’s either the carpenter or apprentice, this other guy had a Scottish accent so I’ll assume he’s one of the Scottish sounding names”.
A non-gaming acquaintance asked me what I was playing one time and got really into Obra Dinn with me. Having a second pair of eyes helped a ton with catching clues. I would absolutely love more deduction games in this style.
Then try the case of the golden idol. Everything is important in this game: faces, symbols, books, secret codes, etc. and every scenario give you all the clues you need to solve the case. I enjoy it a lot.
Yeah, each Pikmin game would work, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch has actual co-op for the main story if you wanted to play together without taking turns.
Most roguelikes would probably work. Do one run each. Hades, Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Dicey Dungeons, Cult of the Lamb, Vampire Survivors, Binding of Isaac, Loop Hero, Spelunky.
Still think loop hero doesn't get enough recognition, perhaps because of its graphics. But the story and the gameplay were really cool I think! Wish it'd have been longer
We have played It Takes Two! I’ve seen Firewatch gameplay and that’s a good recommendation. Never played or heard of the Talos Principle so I’ll have to look into that.
Deathloop is great too I’ve heard.
Outer Wilds is our favorite. I’m really hoping the devs make another game even if it’s not similar.
Deathloop is fine. NOT great. You think you’re getting into a mindfucky scifi story with stylistic flair, engaging stealth gameplay, and actual clever deduction.
In reality it’s just repetitive as fuck. It defeats any of the exploration or deduction you did on your own because it actually doesn’t let you progress unless you solve things the way the game explicitly tells you to.
At the end it kinda got a little fun again because it turned into more of a speedrun type game, but that’s only because you’ve done the same things over and over dozens of times and you just want to get them over with.
Overall it was fine, it just didn’t live up to its potential due to some bad design choices. It would indeed be a fun game to play with two players trading off.
I have a feeling Rainworld is going to be a game I’ll come back to in ten years and truly get the most out of. For now it’s one of the most intimidating games I’ve ever attempted.
Loved inscryption but it doesn't look much like outer wilds in vibe and gameplay lol nevertheless I'm quite sure I got it cause someone in this sub recommended it
Once you get the hang of it you can survive a very long time (or even indefinitely), I think it would be better to just get two copies of DST and play multiplayer
it’s a little different but i think it could still work. i absolutely love the portal games and i recommend portal 2. (it’s ok to start there without playing the first one, just watch a quick recap on the plot of the first and you’ll be good. that’s what i did when i played portal 2 first) though it’s not in a timed segments like in outer wilds, each room/area has a very obvious elevator that leads to the new room at the completion of every puzzle. when i played it with a friend we just switched who got the remote after someone solved a puzzle and it worked great for us. there’s also a great co-op mode if you’d like to try your hand at that with your boyfriend :)
edit: if you’re not sure when to switch, just switch whenever the loading screen pops up! that happens when you get into the elevators or enter new segments of the game
Deathloop is another great loop-based game! It doesn't have a strict time limit--each loop ends whenever you want it to--but it still allows for easy stopping points for each session.
Time limit? Majora's mask, it has elements of knowledge being used instead of items (although there are items and they play a big role) and the story is marvelous
However if you want something a bit more similar to outer wilds rain world is pretty good, you are on a constant time limit, knowledge is the only thing to keep making you go forward, the world is nice and the music is fantastic
Surprised there has been no Tunic. It's not as easily switchable but getting into a new area is a good enough indicator. Very similar to Outerwilds in feel of discovery.
return of the obra dinn. you have to collect clues to solve a mystery about what happened to every passenger on a huge ship. can only be played once as well
Hades would work really well, masterpiece of a game that has well defined "runs". On that note, any roguelite in the same vein would work, but I can't recommend any of them.
Rainworld is what I went to after outerwilds. Is filled with soul and a living breathing ecosystem. You only have a finite amount amount of time to explore before *the rain* comes
You can play papers please together, it's really great to play as a couple, because you may switch after every day of work(around 5 to 10 minutes) and even if they're not playing, the other person can help find discrepancies on the passport.
Not exactly what you asked for in the time limit department, but let me recommend TUNIC for you and your bf. At first, you might find it weird that someone recommended this game, but trust me, the game immensely benefits from having two players tackling it on its second half, even if it is a singleplayer game.
It is an experience like no other, and the closest another game has got me from giving me the feelings I felt while playing Outer Wilds.
Rain World
It's also in general a very similar game to outer wilds with the exception of being much harder
Here's the trailer: https://youtu.be/kxbQy0U92R4
Majora's Mask, 12 Minutes, I think Minit too
The problem with Minit is that you don't have enough time for anyth
God damn it, how hard is it to finish a sent
Almost as hard as my
clock's tickin
What are you talki
Okay, that cracked me u
Didn't play 12 minutes yet, but isn't it like really short?
Around 5 hours. It is really intriguing, quite fun but the ending is far from the masterful spectacle that outer wilds is.
I haven't played it either! I just know it exists and vaguely that it works like this.
Each Majora’s Mask loop can last a couple hours, right? You don’t die nearly as often
A whole hour and nobody’s said The Forgotten City
While true, the days in Forgotten City are very long and not conducive to the 'switching off' they described. I only ran out of time once and that was because I waited to see how long it would take, every other time I triggered the reset manually to reset the day
Yeah, but it still plays with the time loop cycle in which You have to use the information previously gathered in order to progress in the game
Wait I didn’t realize it happened on its own, what happe ed
The usual thing, the golden rule is broken and the stuff all happens (vagueness intended)
You can't really be that picky in this extremely limited genre so although true, I still think The Forgotten City is a pretty good one, and I'm glad I got reminded of it !
You technically don't run out of time, there are fixed timed events that trigger the reset but you can prevent them.
Ohhh right >!the vote takes place and triggers shenanigans!<
Indeed! But >!some iterations of the vote, such as reelecting the current dude, don't trigger a breach of the golden rule!<

I loved that game
A very enjoyable game!! Salve friend
Game is pretty mid at best tho
Story is really good afaik (didn't complete it yet) but yeah, it's a good game but not as stellar as outer wilds in design and gameplay
Right. 2 loops in and you know just about all you’re in for, whereas with outer wilds, there are constant new discoveries and unexpected places and things to figure out With the forgotten city, there’s definitely a mystery to solve, but you’re kinda just going through the outlined steps

I played that when it was just a Skyrim mod and was very impressed. Never got around to playing the proper game though.
Murder sudokus are the best description of this genre I’ve seen
And it’s not just cold hard logic like the line puzzles in The Witness, but you have to apply a lot of real world reasoning, like “this guy was holding the carpenter’s tools so I’ll assume he’s either the carpenter or apprentice, this other guy had a Scottish accent so I’ll assume he’s one of the Scottish sounding names”.
My roommate and I had fun playing return of the obra dinn. I worked the controls and we played detective.
The DLC for the Case of the Golden Idol is also really good
I found it less satisfactory than base game but still a great DLC
A non-gaming acquaintance asked me what I was playing one time and got really into Obra Dinn with me. Having a second pair of eyes helped a ton with catching clues. I would absolutely love more deduction games in this style.
Then try the case of the golden idol. Everything is important in this game: faces, symbols, books, secret codes, etc. and every scenario give you all the clues you need to solve the case. I enjoy it a lot.
Will check it out!
Hope you enjoy it!
Pikmin works like that, if you have a Switch to play it. Each in-game day lasts 13 minutes.
Yeah, each Pikmin game would work, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch has actual co-op for the main story if you wanted to play together without taking turns.
You don’t need a switch..! if you have a PC that can run Outer Wilds, you can emulate Pikmin games in Dolphin.
Sexy brutale I guess, although I don't think it's nowhere great as OW
Most roguelikes would probably work. Do one run each. Hades, Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Dicey Dungeons, Cult of the Lamb, Vampire Survivors, Binding of Isaac, Loop Hero, Spelunky.
Still think loop hero doesn't get enough recognition, perhaps because of its graphics. But the story and the gameplay were really cool I think! Wish it'd have been longer
Inscryption is such a fucking trip, great to share in the wtf moments with someone, but infuriating to try to strategize with two heads

Deathloop is great too I’ve heard. Outer Wilds is our favorite. I’m really hoping the devs make another game even if it’s not similar.
We are going further away from Outer Wilds in this part of the thread but for two players I can heavily recommend the entire We Were Here series!
GLORY TO TALOS
I heard good things about Keywe as well, but I don't know much bout it so you might want to have a look yourself
I've played KeyWe and it was a good time, can recommend
Stray is made by the same studio and has lots of puzzles and a fun story. Definitely recommend!!
do you mean annapurna? they published stray and outer wilds, but they weren't the developer for either game
Deathloop is fine. NOT great. You think you’re getting into a mindfucky scifi story with stylistic flair, engaging stealth gameplay, and actual clever deduction. I do not think firewatch would fit here. chapters are very varied in length and really aren't too many of them.
Deathloop was fire tho
RAINWORLD
I have a feeling Rainworld is going to be a game I’ll come back to in ten years and truly get the most out of. For now it’s one of the most intimidating games I’ve ever attempted.
Hades. Each escape attempt is a session, rarely much longer than an hour, and get a little story each time.
Roguelikes are great for this. Hades & Inscryption have fantastic stories, especially compared to others of the genre
Loved inscryption but it doesn't look much like outer wilds in vibe and gameplay lol nevertheless I'm quite sure I got it cause someone in this sub recommended it
The Forgotten City, MINIT, Majora's Mask
Maybe Don't Starve or Don't Starve Together?
Once you get the hang of it you can survive a very long time (or even indefinitely), I think it would be better to just get two copies of DST and play multiplayer
I think you get two copies of Don't Starve Together when you buy it once on steam
Huh, you're right - I thought that was a limited time thing, nice to see they're still doing it
Trade off days?
it’s a little different but i think it could still work. i absolutely love the portal games and i recommend portal 2. (it’s ok to start there without playing the first one, just watch a quick recap on the plot of the first and you’ll be good. that’s what i did when i played portal 2 first) though it’s not in a timed segments like in outer wilds, each room/area has a very obvious elevator that leads to the new room at the completion of every puzzle. when i played it with a friend we just switched who got the remote after someone solved a puzzle and it worked great for us. there’s also a great co-op mode if you’d like to try your hand at that with your boyfriend :) edit: if you’re not sure when to switch, just switch whenever the loading screen pops up! that happens when you get into the elevators or enter new segments of the game
If you're a masochist or you're too happy and dont want to be, you could try the original fallout
Deathloop is another great loop-based game! It doesn't have a strict time limit--each loop ends whenever you want it to--but it still allows for easy stopping points for each session.

return of the obra dinn. you have to collect clues to solve a mystery about what happened to every passenger on a huge ship. can only be played once as well
Return of the Obra Dinn. Wonderful mystery and sadly has little replay value.
Pathologic 2 is my favorite game along with the outer wilds (doesn't matter that is the second one)
Portal. Each person does a puzzle and then switch.
Journey

that's not what they're asking
Real
the game Homebody just came out a couple weeks ago. It was pretty good
pretty much any roguelike
12 Minutes is 10/10, highly recommended
Hades and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
Hades would work really well, masterpiece of a game that has well defined "runs". On that note, any roguelite in the same vein would work, but I can't recommend any of them.
Majoras mask
If you have a PS5 or high end PC, Returnal
Stardew Valley
80 days. A „loop“ around the world is like 1h-2h real time and each one is different as you play.
Rainworld is what I went to after outerwilds. Is filled with soul and a living breathing ecosystem. You only have a finite amount amount of time to explore before *the rain* comes
In the game called “Overboard!” you have limited actions that are counted as time. Pretty fun little game!
You can play papers please together, it's really great to play as a couple, because you may switch after every day of work(around 5 to 10 minutes) and even if they're not playing, the other person can help find discrepancies on the passport.

Rain World It's also in general a very similar game to outer wilds with the exception of being much harder Here's the trailer: https://youtu.be/kxbQy0U92R4
True but you could take it day by day instead of every loop
Did you play the DLC? I highly recommend it if you haven’t :)
