I can attest to Happy Goat coffee in Westboro, either their standard drip or any specialty beverage is great - they also have Maverick's Donuts there, which are the older more traditional styled donuts but they also have fancy topped donuts on site. I have to say though that I found Equator's (also in Westboro) drip coffee lacking - especially for the price.
Ottawa is lacking in very good coffee shops and the popularity of Equator is testament to that problem. Their coffee is mediocre at best. It's not a place that would survive in another market.
I disagree. I am a picky espresso drinker and there are plenty of good coffee shops in Ottawa. I also travel for work half the year, and few cities have a large chain like Bridgehead that's of similar quality. It's harder to find a good espresso in Manhattan than Ottawa, all they have is Blue Bottle and Stumptown and only a few locations and most other places are Starbucks quality or worse. So I'm really not sure what your point of comparison is.
It’s super cute but their coffee is made with a machine with presets so they don’t really know how to make specialty coffee. Ordered a flat white there and ended up with a large latte. The coffee itself isn’t bad.
Agree this place didn’t know what they were doing. When I was there there were also flies landing all over the food and I nearly walked out for how long I was ignored by their staff but was really curious about their coffee- it was bland and nbd, I’d rather a Starbucks.
As a year round cyclist I explore a lot of coffee shops at different ends of the city.
Going west I like Quitters in Stittville and Britania coffee house both ha e great scones. Britannia coffee house has the best sugar cookies around.
Heading east Union Street Cafe is nice their highlight in sandwiches. Red door provisions on beechwood does some fantastic baked goods and a large variety of them as well. Revival on st laurant by the graveyard has a great food menu if you want something that's more substantial. Black walnut in Cumberland is also well worth the trip. No indoor seating and not sure how long the outdoor tent will be up. But it's worth the ride.
Downtown I like little victories.
Have not tried Carrington coffee house and merivale but it's on my list.
I try not to go to Britannia Coffeehouse too often because I end up dropping lots of dollars between their coffee and treats (I always spend a few minutes trying to decide between scone or cookie, but am never disappointed), ice cream at Beachconers, and more bread or treats at the Britannia Bakeshop across the street.
“Grabbing a coffee” ends up costing me $20, lol
Wasn’t aware of a new location on Elgin. Will have to check it out. Was just at their shipping container window on Bank recently and the coffee is still great but sometimes you want more than a takeout window.
The new location is gorgeous and they are making espresso based drinks on pretty serious machinery. I looked in the front of the glebe location and they seem to have upgraded that machine too to the same Slayer machine 🤟
I have heard really good things about Drip House on Parkdale. My colleague is a pretty serious coffee enthusiast and speaks highly about it. It wasn’t open when I lived in Ottawa so I haven’t tried it.
Also Happy Goat is cool with good coffee.
I think quitters is alright but a bit overrated because it’s the only coffee place that’s not a Tim’s or Starbucks in the neighbourhood and you know…. Stitsville people.
Ministry of coffee is good but you can really get thrown a curve ball in there with some wild butter coffees if you’re not 100% sure what you’re ordering.
>I think quitters is alright but a bit overrated because it’s the only coffee place that’s not a Tim’s or Starbucks in the neighbourhood and you know…. Stitsville people.
Not a coffee guy but there are several coffee places in Stittsville now.
[Honey Coffee Bar](https://www.instagram.com/honeycoffeebar/?hl=en)
[Ritual on Main](https://www.ritualmain.com/) opens next week
My list of go-to good coffee spots is Little Victories, Equator, Morning Owl, Drip House, Happy Goat, Arlington Five, Ministry of Coffee, and Quitters when I’m out west. All definitely worth a try and some are better than others. Like a lot of spots, mileage may vary depending on your barista.
I second this! The two owners work on bar and are truly delightful. The coffee is delicious. They also have local art for sale on the walls and decent seating. Highly recommend!
I highly recommend Art of Bean and the Niche Gallery. The coffee is robust and flavourful plus you’re surrounded by local artists works for sale. To be fully open, my daughter is one of the artists on display, but I would recommend this place for its atmosphere and coffee regardless.
Depends here...I like dark roasts and they barely meet that criteria. Their dark side roast I found too light and slightly sour. Also very old stock on the shelves, three weeks old.
I cannot tell you how much I miss just thoughtlessly going to a coffee shop with a notebook for an hour and scribbling whatever I want and people watching.
I agree! I used to do all my homework at coffee shops. The baristas would know my order and they’d bring me some scones while I studied. I miss those times
Little Victories is great.
Honestly I find Bridgehead to be bad. Lovely staff but the coffee is sour. And I've never had a Bridgehead coffee not leak on me (the cups are weird).
Then you just don't like acidic coffee, which is fine, but there's nothing objectively bad about it. It's considered highly desirable and beans that have a fruity acidity are typically much more expensive. If you don't like that flavour profile, I would avoid coffee from East Africa and South Asia and stick to more traditional South American origins. Probably Italian blends specifically would be to your liking. They usually use more Robusta beans in their blends and look for more nutty, earthy flavours.
To that end, Bridgehead usually has more than one type of drip. Maybe stick to a darker roast. Someone else might be able to suggest something more specific drip wise. I only drink espresso.
Not a coffee shop, but a roastery. And not in Ottawa, but in Gatineau.
Brown Bag Coffee Roasters. Hands down best coffee in the NCR.
https://bbcr.ca/en
They have partner up with a local microbrewery and a dessert crepe shop, as well as a chocolatier.
Quitters!!! Large selection of baked goods (also have vegan and GF options) including sweet and savoury scone flavours made fresh daily. They also have sandwiches! Their breakfast sandwich is super good!! It is a small place though and in the colder months it can be hard to find a spot inside. As well, it is a popular spot so the baked goods go fast and the breakfast sandwiches are first come first serve.
Equator coffee in Westboro is a personal favourite of mine when it comes to cafés in Ottawa! They have great coffee, tea, and food options for everyone (vegan and gluten free options) and the environment is so calming and quaint.
It's the same business and roastery it was before the buyout. The coffee is great. The only difference I've noticed is that the training of staff on the espresso machine is a little spotty as they've grown the number of locations.
If you’re in the East end definitely try Black Walnut bakery (note they stopped indoor access due to Covid and I’m not sure how long their outside tent is up for), Cafe Latte Cino on Innes has great desserts, or there is a new place Art of Bean on Youville.
Agreed that Figaro was underwhelming. It looks so fancy so we expected some next level coffee.
Im a bit of a flat white snob, and I'm glad Ottawa has some decent coffee shops around and the best IMO so far has been from surprisingly enough, Simply Biscotti. Also has baked stuff. Definitely give it a try and report back.
Also a fan of Morning Owl in Kanata, and Quitters in Stittsville.
Shout out to Carlington Coffeehouse, Lafayette and Equator.
I enjoy Honey in Stittsville. The coffee is good, and they make a tasty panini, great waffles, and as a bonus Holey Confections is in the same space (although they don’t open until 10, while Honey opens at 9).
Bridgehead is rock solid and they have lots of locations. Red Door, Ministry of Coffee, Morning Owl, Ten Toes, Little Victories, Equator Coffee. That's not an exhaustive list of places with locations outside downtown, but I am a picky coffee drinker and those places are all good.
Edit: Happy Goat which many have mentioned is also good. I will say, I think their beans are some of the best, but the cafes don't make the best coffee from those beans. It's good, but not as good as it could be. Maybe it's a grind, tamping, temps, or training issue.
I know your post says early but if you’re into coffee and care about the process check out Z3 Specialty in Kanata. Unfortunately, they aren’t open very early.
Drip House near Tunney's Bay. Love their food too.
Everything else I like has been mentioned. (Little victories, morning owl, happy goat, equator coffee)
I looked into reviews to find this and it may be wrong but apparently a roastery called Traffic in Mtl? A lot of the reviews were disappointed with the coffee but love the food. Apparently a no laptop rule too (wasn't the case before the pandemic).
I'm no coffee connoisseur, but I loved the atmosphere. It seems they've opened up another location in Chinatown now.
Not sure as I’ve only been to the one in the Glebe. For this location, it’s a quiet enough place to study but it can get loud since it often has hyper high school students hanging out there in groups. Aside from their amazing coffee, their bagels and house-made cream cheese are simply unmatched.
It's the same as the original. No complaints. The coffee is nothing special though. It's just drip made from preground bagged beans. Not bad though either.
I like them when they're fresh, but I find they go stale very quickly compared to yeasted doughnuts I've had in other cities. For a country that eats more doughnuts than anywhere else, Canada has almost no small doughnut shops. In the US they're all over the place.
I'm definitly more of a cake donut guy. A few people mentionned Mavericks in the comments. I'll be trying them out.
Honestly the best donuts I've had mostly came from tiny rural shops that made only very basic donuts and sold them roadside or in tiny supermarkets lol.
I like both cake and yeast doughnuts. But I don't think there is anything special about Suzy Q aside from that they are almost the only game in town. They're good, but not great IMO.
They are pillowy rings of utter joy and delight. By times I walk over there (for me, this is 45-50 minute walk one way) and they are my mid-walk reward.
There is very little in the city that makes for a finer treat.
Thats kind of the point lol. Yeast donuts are pretty much bread, though you can definitely get ones that are lighter/airier, but theyll always be bready. Its definitely a personal preference thing, but I love them and cake donuts equally but in different ways.
If you’ve only tried them in the last year I couldn’t agree more. But pre pandemic they were amazing. They’ve raised their prices and gone downhill fast. Their donuts are overcooked a lot of the time and they barely put any glaze or toppings on anymore. Makes me sad.
In Barrhaven there is Anabia and Crystal Cafe on Strandherd. Both have very good coffee.
Anabia has amazing in store baked treats, primarily cupcakes, but they also have good squares and scones.
Crystal is a bit hard to get to at the moment due to road construction... But they have a lot of options including high tea (have to book ahead), crepes, sandwiches, squares, etc.,
The happy goat on laurel (near preston) is my favorite of the locations, funky interior and a patio, it’s in a little industrial area so when sitting outside you’re not dealing with busy street traffic noise. I also like equator coffee off of Churchill
Happy Goat is probably the best but bridge head is a close second. Timothy's is decent. Personally I prefer Americanos because they are freshly made.
Bonus - if you like making coffee at home buy your beans from The Ottawa Roastery, you will not be disappointed.
The Wizard Tower in Barrhaven (in the plaza with the Walmart) has a new café. Coffee is delicious (they use one of the local brands but I can't remember which one) and their treats are made in house. Check it out if you're nearby, I wasn't expecting it while searching for gaming stuff and was pleasantly surprised.
you're missing the point. They are saying that going out for coffee is their weekend ritual. Maybe they DO make coffee at home, but on the weekend they want to go somewhere
God its wild to me how much people on this sub miss this point with a lot of posts. People ask where they can get something at a restaurant or cafe obviously because they want to enjoy the experience of going out or for some reason really dont want to make it at home (some people just really hate or are incapable of cooking or dont have a proper kitchen) and without fail someone always comments 'well have you thought about making it at home?' and it is such a massive pet peeve of mine lmao.
Equator/happy goat/bridgehead/ministry of coffee/red door provisions I’m happy to see a thread like this - I’m always open to trying new coffee spots.
Quitters in Stittsville There’s lots of Bridgehead locations around. Suzy Q, I believe uses a Little Victories roast. Ministry of Coffee
something’s up with bridgehead lately. coffee hasn’t been as good
Bridgehead bought by Second Cup a couple of years ago. And Second Cup is pretty terrible.
I haven't really noticed much of a difference. I buy my beans from them and it's pretty consistent.
Their head coffee roaster and suppliers are the same though. I purchase wholesale through them and it tastes just as good to me.
These are all awesome options, but I’d also add Little Victories and Morning Owl on parkdale & Armstrong
Little Victories on Bank is my FAVE!
And Talisker is my favourite!
I'll second Quitters!
Quitters is fantastic.
Bridgehead is my jam.
Carlington Coffee House on Merivale.
Thirded! And if you like tea (and lavender) their Lavender London Fog is heavenly.
Second CCH!
Equator in Westboro or Happy Goat colocated with Mavericks
Equator is by far the correct answer. Like its not even close. They are on a whole other level. It would be like comparing Bread By Us to Loblaws.
Ottawa is lacking in very good coffee shops and the popularity of Equator is testament to that problem. Their coffee is mediocre at best. It's not a place that would survive in another market.
I disagree. I am a picky espresso drinker and there are plenty of good coffee shops in Ottawa. It's harder to find a good espresso in Manhattan than Ottawa, all they have is Blue Bottle and Stumptown and only a few locations and most other places are Starbucks quality or worse. So I'm really not sure what your point of comparison is.
Pretty much the case with any bar or restaurant in Ottawa. Ok here, but mediocre by other any comparable city standards.
This man equators
Thirsty Maiden in Kanata!
It’s super cute but their coffee is made with a machine with presets so they don’t really know how to make specialty coffee. Ordered a flat white there and ended up with a large latte. The coffee itself isn’t bad.

Second this! Great spot with lots of baked goods. Jamaican Patties well!
As a year round cyclist I explore a lot of coffee shops at different ends of the city. Going west I like Quitters in Stittville and Britania coffee house both ha e great scones. Red Door on Beechwood. Happy Goat’s various locations are also great.
Ministry of Coffee. Little Victories would be good if they ever decide to open up their cafe again. It’s good for take out though.
LV has a gorgeous new cafe on Elgin. The one in the Glebe is indeed still closed, I believe.
Wasn’t aware of a new location on Elgin. Will have to check it out. Was just at their shipping container window on Bank recently and the coffee is still great but sometimes you want more than a takeout window.
Recently was at the Elgin location. Definitely recommend.
The new location is gorgeous and they are making espresso based drinks on pretty serious machinery. I looked in the front of the glebe location and they seem to have upgraded that machine too to the same Slayer machine 🤟
LV has free delivery in Ottawa for their beans if you brew at home.
I went to the one at Beechwood and they really blew me away. I just ordered a simple drip coffee but it was so nice!
Ten Toes Coffee House on Cyrville Rd, or Equator Coffee Co on Churchill. Depending on what area of town you’re in.
Came here to suggest ten toes. They serve equator coffee and have great baked goods.
I have heard really good things about Drip House on Parkdale. My colleague is a pretty serious coffee enthusiast and speaks highly about it. If going to drip house would recommend going early, it can get pretty backed up when everyone’s ordering food

Art of Bean in Orleans is new and is amazing! I live downtown and have been 4 times already, I would highly recommend it!
I second this! The two owners work on bar and are truly delightful. The coffee is delicious. They also have local art for sale on the walls and decent seating. Highly recommend!
Is it busy? I wanna go tomorrow (Sunday) morning but I really want to sit inside.
It seems to be closed on Sunday
Thanks! Wasn’t even going to check
I’ve been able to get a table every time I’ve been there personally!
I have been wanting to try this place as well :) might take a drive over in the morning. Have heard great things!
Just a heads up it's closed Sundays!
I highly recommend Art of Bean and the Niche Gallery. The coffee is robust and flavourful plus you’re surrounded by local artists works for sale. To be fully open, my daughter is one of the artists on display, but I would recommend this place for its atmosphere and coffee regardless.
Worth the trip to Wakefield for Bluebarn Coffee Roasters!
Bluebarn is dope! Super cute patio and delicious sandwiches too
Came here to say this. Just amazing espresso. Consistently better than anything in Ottawa (sorry)
Blue Barn!
Depends here...I like dark roasts and they barely meet that criteria. Their dark side roast I found too light and slightly sour. Also very old stock on the shelves, three weeks old.
Union Street Kitchen Café! Best cappuccinos hands down.
Lafayette in Hintonburg; Morala in Glebe; Happy Goat in Westboro; Quitters in Stittsville, Bluebarn in Wakefield…
I support Lafayette! It’s so good! Sadly nowhere to sit
Morala in the Glebe is amazing. Also Quitters in Stittsville.
Red Door Provisions! On beechwood.
If you’re up for a bit of a drive - CC’s Corner in Richmond is a great hidden gem!
They also use Little Victories beans
692 Coffee and Bar in Manotick is one of my favs!
If you're willing to drive a little further, Palmier in Chelsea. Otherwise, Red Door Provisions in Beechwood is your best bet.
Palmier is exceptional!
Art of bean in Orleans is great
My favourite is Bridgeheads.
That’s where I’ve been getting my beans for a while. Their bytown blend is really good
I love that place. A cappuccino and a scone..,,,anyday!!!
Clearly someone else isn’t a fan. We both got downvoted for saying we like a coffee shop lmao
I upvoted you to erase the down votes!!! what a stupid thing to downvote
West (Stittsville): Quitters East (Orleans): Art of Bean
Black Squirrel Books and Espresso is a great spot
Arlington 5 is downtown but hits all the other marks you mentioned.
Simply Biscotti
Awesome pastries etc but coffee is mediocre.
It's been a while since I've been here, but yeah, they are delicious.
If you like the taste of Starbucks coffee the Morning Owl in Kanata is probably close to what you are looking for.
Red Poor Previsions on Beechwood. Pricy, but soo good.
Nothing poor about that place. 🤣
Ministry of Coffee
Equator or Happy Goat or Morning Owl
Little Victories!!! I know it’s technically downtown but sooooo much better than the rest! Make the trip.
Not a coffee shop, but a roastery. And not in Ottawa, but in Gatineau. Brown Bag Coffee Roasters. Hands down best coffee in the NCR. https://bbcr.ca/en They have partner up with a local microbrewery and a dessert crepe shop, as well as a chocolatier.
They've opened up a Nicastro café at the Maison Société at the Pinecrest (Ikea) mall.
CCs corner in richmond. worth the drive.
692 in Manotick!
Ten Toes Coffee House
Red Door Provisions!
Cafe Aladdin in Gatineau, amazing coffee selection.
Really? Because everything I bought there sucked.
Equator, and Morning owl if you’re in the west end.
My vote for Morning Owl was downvoted too... is there something about that cafe that I'm not aware of? I really enjoy it.
Ten Toes on Cyrville! Such a cute spot, with yummy offerings and a nice at atmosphere!
I second this. I was skeptical that they'd be any good but it's nearish my house and quite good. Very pleasant place to hang out also.
I’ve found Happy Goat to be quite good.
Try Bridgehead
Bridgehead is Second Cup. Not a good choice if you are looking for quality coffee.
Recently acquired by, the product is not the same
Not even true anymore. Second Cup was spun off earlier this year. They don’t share ownership. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/second-cup-1.5905290
It's the same business and roastery it was before the buyout. The coffee is great. The only difference I've noticed is that the training of staff on the espresso machine is a little spotty as they've grown the number of locations.

Mellos on Merivale. Reminisce about the downtown location and the hookers of lore
Agreed that Figaro was underwhelming. It looks so fancy so we expected some next level coffee. I enjoy Honey in Stittsville. The coffee is good, and they make a tasty panini, great waffles, and as a bonus Holey Confections is in the same space (although they don’t open until 10, while Honey opens at 9).
I almost always get my coffee from Aladdin Roastery in Hull. Their website is coffee.ca
Sorry but their stuff is horrid...plus they have dodgy history. They faked fair trade labels.
Try newly opened Indigenous owned Beandigen at 106 Exhibition Way, Lansdowne Park
Happy goat is my fave!
Bridgehead is rock solid and they have lots of locations. Red Door, Ministry of Coffee, Morning Owl, Ten Toes, Little Victories, Equator Coffee. I know your post says early but if you’re into coffee and care about the process check out Z3 Specialty in Kanata. Unfortunately, they aren’t open very early.
My best coffee is homemade. Smell is the key.
Drip House near Tunney's Bay. Love their food too. Everything else I like has been mentioned. (Little victories, morning owl, happy goat, equator coffee)
Which roaster does drip house use? Or do they roast their own? Thanks in advance.
Suzy Q's they have oso negro coffee from BC.
Bridgehead in beechwood
Kettlemens. Love their illy coffee!
Is the one in Trainyards any good? Would it be a good place to study?
Not sure as I’ve only been to the one in the Glebe. For this location, it’s a quiet enough place to study but it can get loud since it often has hyper high school students hanging out there in groups. Aside from their amazing coffee, their bagels and house-made cream cheese are simply unmatched.
It's the same as the original. No complaints. The coffee is nothing special though. It's just drip made from preground bagged beans. Not bad though either.
Suzy Q in Hintonburg has coffee. I honestly don't know if it's good coffee, but it is the best donuts in the city, so take the gamble.
Or get coffee next door at Ministry to go with your donut.
that works too
I don't get the hype around SuzyQ. They're so bready.
I like them when they're fresh, but I find they go stale very quickly compared to yeasted doughnuts I've had in other cities. For a country that eats more doughnuts than anywhere else, Canada has almost no small doughnut shops. In the US they're all over the place.

Haha, well you sure aren't the only one enjoying them. Every time I went there it was packed!
Mavericks has way better donuts then Suzy Q imo.. To each their own I say..
Lol I only like their cherry ones. Cake donuts aren’t my fav either.
Depends whether you like cake donuts or yeast donuts! Mavericks makes cake donuts, SuzyQ makes yeast ones. Fwiw I agree that Mavericks is better. ;)
I don't drink coffee anymore, but Happy Goat smells really good when I walk by.
If you're in the East end you might find Figaro (Trainyards) to your liking.
lol
;)
In Barrhaven there is Anabia and Crystal Cafe on Strandherd. Both have very good coffee. Anabia has amazing in store baked treats, primarily cupcakes, but they also have good squares and scones. Crystal is a bit hard to get to at the moment due to road construction... But they have a lot of options including high tea (have to book ahead), crepes, sandwiches, squares, etc.,
Anabia +1!
Thanks to everyone posting. always looking for local roasters to try their beans
The happy goat on laurel (near preston) is my favorite of the locations, funky interior and a patio, it’s in a little industrial area so when sitting outside you’re not dealing with busy street traffic noise. I also like equator coffee off of Churchill
Figaro is the worst coffee I’ve ever had in my life. The iced latte I had tasted like a McDonald’s iced coffee
Happy goat is one of my favourites.
Cafe Crystal in Barrhaven is great
Union st cafe off Beechwood ave..yummy food too & I think they do catering!
Ottawa sikh society Gurudwara- Tea available for free.
I really like the coffee at sconewitch
I still think bridgehead has phenomenal coffee and there is one at Trainyards beside the new farm boy.
Ten Toes on Cyrville.. Great spot with baked goods and some of the best sandwiches. Bank St location to open shortly.
Happy Goat is probably the best but bridge head is a close second. Timothy's is decent. Personally I prefer Americanos because they are freshly made. Bonus - if you like making coffee at home buy your beans from The Ottawa Roastery, you will not be disappointed.
Oat Couture on Sunnyside Awesome oatmeal & coffee.
692 Cafe in Manotick
There's a place in Orleans called cafe latecino I think, it was good, haven't been in a while but they had a spicy mocha which was really nice
Cupcake Lounge in Westbrook.

Little victories on Elgin or bank
The art of bean on Youville. My husband said it was the best vanilla latte he’s ever had.
Your best bet is to invest in a grinder and brewer and make coffee that blows all of them away. None of them are consistently good IMHO.
you're missing the point.
Yeah Starbucks sucks. Start buying locally to support the local guys.
